    I spent more time dialing in tones with very helpful feedback and I have to say this may be my new favorite setting.
    The MS Brit setting is punchy and sounds massive with different types of boost and overdrive. It also blends in so well in ambient settings with a washy reverb and a bit of an "edge of break up tone".
    Needless to say, I had fun recording this demo. Enjoy!

    Awesome demo! So I’m curious with a setup like this (or with the Simplifier in general), how would you go about plugging into the front of a real amp? Also could you do a W/D sorta thing keeping the real amp dry while sending Simplifier direct to a PA or FRFR, etc?
    Thanks!

    • @dlee5
      @dlee5  4 года назад +2

      So since all the wet effects are in the Simplifier’s FX Loop I can use the Left 1/4 inch output and toggle the switch to from out to thru to send the dry to the amp’s input while the XLRs are sent to the PA. The XLR outputs don’t sum to mono so the right 1/4 inch output switch toggles from out to sum to mono. You can also use the sum to mono on the right 1/4 inch output to plug into the amp’s return input to send both wet/dry effects and to use it as a power cab or plug into the FRFR speaker while the XLR outs are sent to the PA.

    • @dlee5
      @dlee5  4 года назад +1

      One thing to note, if trying to bypass the Simplifier amp and cabs all together to run just the pedalboard stereo to amps you might need a Stereo AB switch box after the last stereo pedal to toggle between sending to the Simplifier and amps. Good stuff!
    I’ve got a question:
    How does Benson Preamp work with the Simplifier? I’ve got strymon iridium and I’m afraid if I get benson they might clash because benson is meant to sound like an amp as well.
    Pls and thank you

    • @dlee5
      @dlee5  4 года назад +5

      Benson works really well with the Simplifier. I use the AC Brit mode on the Simplifier the most so the Benson really helps with adding more grit or edge of breakup. The gain on the AC Brit mode when set high or maxed is still a little clean-ish with my single coil guitars so the Benson helps with dialing in the breakup tone. Plus I'm constantly messing with the tone knobs and have been loving the different tone combinations.
      I know some other guys that use a Benson with the Iridium and it sounds amazing. Check out Sam Wittek's channel if you get a chance. He's using the King of Tone and Benson with the Iridium on his board.

    • @dlee5
      @dlee5  3 года назад +1

      Hey man. I’m using the Simplifier mainly live into PA, recording, and silent practicing. I wish there was a way to bypass it altogether if running stereo to amps but I’ve got the Goodwood Audio Audition that I might mess with. I also thought about maybe putting the El Cap before the Simplifier input and using the Thru switch so the drives and El Cap would go to the amp. Other than that, it’s been a killer piece of gear and super easy with setup and tear downs.

    • @telecasper
      @telecasper 3 года назад

      @@dlee5 oh I see...so you can only bypass it completely if you run mono, right?

    • @dlee5
      @dlee5  3 года назад

      Yeah. If it could do a stereo input like the Iridium that would’ve been killer but still sounds amazing. I’ve also changed up the board since then so I’m using the Protein and Benson for more of the tone shaping and definitely feels like it sounds way better that when I first starting messing with the Simplifier

    Hi David, thanks for the demo. I saw you also have a iriduim, have you compared it?

    • @dlee5
      @dlee5  4 года назад +4

      I have and after playing the Simplifier for some time the Iridium sounds like a great studio recording of an amp (same impression when playing the Kemper) while the Simplifier feels like an amp in the room.
      Iridium definitely has the advantage with the IR loading capability, midi, presets and the third party ones I’m using currently sound amazing. Also it has more gain but I tend to run the gain clean-ish to a little bit of breakup.
      The Simplifier has the advantage with features like the FX loop, headphone out, Aux in, routing options. A couple things I’m really appreciating now with the Simplifier are the preamp section (3-band EQ), presence, resonance, and tube selections. The MS Brit setting has the most gain compared to the AC Brit and American settings so you can dial it a great edge of breakup tone.
      I had some great feedback and suggestions on approaching the Simplifier as an amp instead of a modeler plus some settings to try and as a result really loved the tones that were dialed up.
      Both are great units and I would say the deciding factors between the two are workflow, features, price, and availability. The Simplifier is on back order but it is definitely worth the wait and sounds amazing. Iridium sounds great right out of the box and quicker to dial in stuff.
      Hope this helps!

    • @erikhartley2494
      @erikhartley2494 4 года назад

      David Lee is the “amp in the room” feeling because it’s not “modeling” any mic’s?

    • @dlee5
      @dlee5  4 года назад +1

      Yeah that and the power amp section with the tube selection and presence/resonance controls. I’d be interested in how humbuckers sound since all I have are single coils.

  • @ZX-6R

    Hi, one question, with so many pedals, don't you feel the need to use a looper like the gigrig quartermaster to preserve your tone?
    thanks

    • @dlee5
      @dlee5  3 года назад

      On a bigger board size I definitely would have tried to incorporate a looper. I have used loopers like the PBC/6X before but I do like tweaking sounds on the fly especially with a board setup like in the video.

    • @coupe-lee
      @coupe-lee 2 года назад

      I think the same thing sometimes, but as long as your pedal order and buffer vs. true bypass setup is thought out, you really shouldn’t hear much of a difference, if any. In my current setup, which is all series, I can’t hear a difference between my direct to amp vs. through pedals. I’ve definitely heard a difference in the past though.
      The biggest advantage to me with the switcher is changing pedal order and creating presets. The ES-8 has such a great feature set.

  • @AntwhaleNearfar

    Hi. Great vid 👍🏻 The one consistent criticism of the Simplifier that I’ve come across is that it has a somewhat thin overall tone, particularly in comparison to The Iridium. What’s what your take on this, as you own both?

    • @dlee5
      @dlee5  3 года назад +1

      Initially it did sound thinner compared to the Iridium but can easily dialed in to add fullness. The Simplifier Preamp EQ has a pretty large range so I found that the dials close to 9 o'clock and less were the sweet spot while using the 4x12 cabs. It took me longer to dial in tones on the Simplifier versus the Iridium and personally I prefer the Iridium still.
      If I only had the Simplifier, I would use the preamp section on it and run it to cabsims like the CabZeus, HX Stomp, etc. I tried this setup a while ago using the HX Stomp cabsims and really loved the results

    Using a loop switcher, the simplifier makes things complicated because there is no stereo in for stereo effects. I have a vintage ehx stereo polychorus that I want out of the signal chain when it's not on, but I'm not able to do this when using the simplifier and my boss es- 8. Anyone got a work around for this? Nice demo, BTW!

    • @dlee5

    • @dlee5

      I have it set up as Post drive. From the Bloomery it goes to the Julia and then the Simplifier input.
      The Simplifier send goes to the DIG mono and then it goes stereo out to the El Cap, Flint, Rev V2, and back to the Simplifier returns.

    Hi David. Wondered if you preferred the simplifier or the strymon iridium?

    • @dlee5
      @dlee5  4 года назад +2

      I prefer the Iridium but slightly since both units are really great pedal platforms and each have excellent features. I really love being able to run stereo effects into the front of the Iridium and using 3rd party IRs makes it sound way better than the stock ones. It took me a while to dial in sounds I really liked on the Simplifier but now both of them sound very close after using preamp pedals with the Simplifier and running the EQ fairly flat while using the tone cut on the drive pedals. I probably would’ve got the Simplifier first though if it was available before the Iridium because of all the features packed into one unit

    • @nickw2704

      @@dlee5 so you can only run stereo effects into the fx loop of the Simplifier, not before ‘preamp’?
      Also, Re IR’s, can you turn off cab sims and use IR’s in DAW, or is that too far along the chain to be effective?

    • @dlee5
      @dlee5  3 года назад

      Yeah. Stereo effects can only be used in the FX Loop. You could bypass the Simplifier Preamp section all together and run the full stereo chain into the Simplifier returns if using preamp pedals. I messed it with some using the Benson and another amp like pedal as the last pedals in the chain before going into the Simplifier returns. Downside was I couldn’t use the 1/4 inch outputs anymore.
      To bypass the cabsims, the chain would be mono effects into the Simplifier input and then use the Simplifier Send to the IR loader, DAW, etc. I think you could still use the right 1/4 inch output with the switch set to Output according to the manual.

    in my experience of using the simplifier any distortion pedal plugged into it seriously degrades it's sonic performance. I mean it still sounds ok, but you really dont want to use it at the end of a pedal chain unless you really have no other choice.
    All time based pedals should be placed in the effects loop. period.
    The simplifier is an amazing piece of kit.
    The bass version is equally great - and they've thought it through and it's a very different interface to the guitar version.
    Every producer should own both of these "pedals".
