The Russian on the birthday banner is misspelled. In stead of Birthday it says riBthday. Also the Hospital misspelled as soHpital. Always the third letter switched with the first. Pls let MatPat see this comment. Maybe its something.
Something I just thought... The size of the house... I think it may be symbolic as well. Going with the child perspective, a house always looks bigger/has lots of rooms etc in a child's eyes. Also, notice the length of the stairway/hallway to the basement. To a child, the basement is scary and the stairs/hallway looks longer than it actually is. It's just something I noticed.
When I moved into the third house of my life, I was scared of the stairs because they didn't have solid-ness on the back, making me think I would injure my foot or fall through. I was an idiot. I know that the stairs looked much longer, too.
@@scoutintime I used to have stairs like that, I used to have a toy of a guy with a functioning parachute and I dropped him off. One of my best childhood memories
@@scoutintime I used to, and still do to a certain extent, have a fear of that kind of stairs, because once when I was very young my foot somehow ended up between two stairs and I was trapped, my parents weren't there and my sister, who was supposed to be looking after me, was in her room listening to music with headphones. I was stuck there for what seemed like hours until my parents came back home, and got me out.
The shadow is lucifer. the neighbor is your father... however, the neighbor is locked in the basement the person you see as the neighbor chasing you all over is not your father but lucifer pretending to be your father. You are returning to your childhood home, you see something is wrong with your father because that isn't your father. you're home was changed in unnatural ways and every time you get caught, he doesn't hurt you... he just sends you home. (i know if i caught someone sneaking into my house not once but like 500 times i'd break someones leg at least) there was a crash, your mother died. Your father sold his soul and likeness to the devil to save your life/keep you safe. this is why the neighbor can't hurt you... even if he wanted to, he must protect you as per the contract. The fear rooms are recreations of your childhood fears, put there by your father so he can remember you and remember times he saved you to prove to himself that he loves you and his deal was worth it. (insert simpsons, you do it for her snapshot) now as an adult you are trying to save your father from eternal damnation. you relive the fears from your past, where your father had to save you to prove to him that you can now take care of yourself and free him from his contract. boom, solved.
So I'm russian. And the text at 11:30 not even close to "subway of the subconscious" I mean at all! It says "ЛЕНЬМИЦА" - "ХОЛПАЯ МОКНАПИЯ" Which is just bunch of gibberish at first glance. But it's an anagram to "МЕЛЬНИЦА" - "ПЛОХАЯ КОМПАНИЯ" Which translates as "Mill" - "Bad Company" I presume that's name of the stations, given that there're arrows to the sides as well. Oh and 90% of russian in the game is either misspelled or an anagram.
I think the main character you play is actually in hell or some purgatory state living in a nightmare. The theme of 4 pops up all the time, with the forth and last either being broken, dropped, or have an apple in it. The main sign I want to focus on is the one next to the gramaphone. One parent holding four children with the forth one being dropped. Notice how there is only one parent. This could represent the nieghbor being a only farther. His wife could have died in a car crash (suggest by the crash sound) or died of some other cause leaving the neighbor alone to raise four children. This is where the main character comes in, you are the fourth child. Dropped, forgotten and with the golden apple inside you. The golden apple is a symbol of power and knowledge. The power maybe to bring loved ones from the dead. What I believed happened is that the neighbors wife died and in his mourn he sacrificed you, one of his children for the power to bring her back. But why you, why would he sacrifice you? Well that's where the fear rooms come in. Each one represent a tragic event in the main characters life the resulted In a poor relationship with your father. Being bullied at school could change how you act in home life possibly making the father mad. The grocery store could symbolize you getting lost in the store putting stress on the nieghbor and finally the pantry could be the neighbor (your dad) locking you in a pantry for disobaying rules. Your the sad mannequin at the party maybe all your other brothers get priority over you and your left out. I feel these fear rooms show us that the father doesn't like his fourth son. And when his wife died he gave you up to the devil for the power to bring his wife back leaving you in a hellish landscape of your child hood home where you are constantly watched by the devil (shadow man) and the only way to get out is too go through the basement. But your father doesn't want you to get out because that means his wife will die again so a hell version of him keeps your from doing so. Anyway that's just my take on it and thought I should share it. If you read all the way through tell me what you think. I want to hear feed back. Edit. Holy crap I didn't think this would explode as well as it did. Thanks for reading it guys I really appreciate it :)
As someone growing up in a Russian household Russian family get very overwhelming. Abuse isn’t seen as abuse but as something normal. I never as a child understood that my father yelling at me or hitting me wasn’t okay. I believe the rooms may be a metaphor for growing up and realizing that what your parental figure did to you wasn’t right. You’re not the bad guy, you are the victim. As a child you are small and heavily dependent on you family for support. I believe that’s why the rooms look so big. You’re seeing it as a flashback. Traumatic events such as abuse often cause ptsd and other mental disorders some of which I struggle myself. Flashbacks may be triggered by people, actions, things, and most importantly places. Moving back into out childhood home brought up said memories and trauma. On the other completely different note there may not even be anyone in the basement and that’s just a the character we play as having flashbacks to him and his mother being locked in the basement.
Well, it’s only abuse depending on the circumstance. My mom and sister always yell down stairs. My parents hit (spanked. Sound funny, ik) when we didnt go up the stairs fast enough for bed. This isn’t abuse, it’s just discipline. Of course, your situation may be completely different. I’m not sure. Edit: MAKWLAQNSIXPBRY KABXI spell
@@ihavenodogs you don’t have to type this on an abuse victims comment, Y’know? And uh, actually what you describe does kinda sound like abuse. You should never hit your kid for being bad, it just makes them *scared*. Speaking as someone who always saw what his dad did as normal, and disciplinary, and for what it was, abuse.
Blizzrobe but when he gets out of the room look at the way his hands move like if you just finished building something so the wife theory can be incorrect but you the player and the nieghbor can have some realation because maybe he was adopted? What do you think?
In a missing poster you can see a father, a mother and two kids. Making the relation between the character being the Neighbour's son, the Neighbour is a dad who got extremely overprotective since his wife died in a car accident (showed in the basement door in the early alphas), and we (the character) are the older son, who left his house because of his dad getting crazy. And maybe who he is keeping in the basement is the younger son (or daughter), that the Neighbour is forcing him/her to stay, since he lost his son and wife.
There’s an app called “Hello neighbor: hide and seek”, it’s where you play from the sisters point of view, the neighbor had a family at one point, he had a wife, and 2 kids, a boy and a girl. I didn’t play most of it because 1) I got scared, and 2) You’d have to buy the whole game. But basically the character you’re playing as is the sister playing hide and seek with her brother. So maybe that has to do with something??
Anthony Velilla actually the brother purposefully pushed her off. Also I think this might be the story and if you don’t want some kinda spoilers then don’t read what I said. My theory is that at the beginning before the game the neighbor had a family with two children and a wife. His wife died in a car crash. The neighbor got home and told his kids and the brother got angry and started being mean to his sister so the neighbor sent him to his room. He stole his sisters doll while he walked away and put the doll on the roof and when his sister got there he pushed her off killing her. I think the grave in the back is the grave for either the grave of the daughter or the neighbors wife. Well the boy turned into the shadow monster and so the neighbor locked him in the basement and he trapped other people to try to bring his wife back with the devils help like matpat said.
My Theory: Neighbor is a doctor. He was very happy in life and had 2 children (one of them is the player) and got married. However, one day, while Neighbor was driving with his wife, they got into a car crash and the wife died. Neighbor was heartbroken; he was desperate. He wanted his wife back. And so, he went to the devil. He made a deal with the devil; Satan would give him the knowledge to revive his wife, and neighbor would commit terrible acts. But Neighbor isn't evil. He doesn't want to do these things, but he feels that he has to. Neighbor is swallowed in his work, and his children move out. Eventually, the player decides to move back next to his father, where he can try to help him with whatever he's doing. However, when Neighbor figures this out, he knows that his son would hate him if he knew what he was doing. So Neighbor creates many defense mechanisms to keep his son from discovering the horrors within his home.
Wow nice theory. I have a plot twist. The woman that screamed, was actually the wife. That got revived. The kids who scream, is the other kids. Idk, just felt i would share my opinion after reading this.
This makes sense actually but a version of hello neighbor totally forgot what version, but the player! Is trying to move to a house which the player is familiar with but is all borded up yet later when the player enters the player was moved to the front house of the neighbor
Now that Mat has mentioned the idea of the neighbor being our father, I got my own theory: In Alpha 2, when we enter the basement we can see two shadow figures that look like an adult with their child. We also here a female's voice say "RUN!" as the figures go away. What if the neighbor was an abusive father and your mother was trying to run away with you to protect you both? When we see the neighbor crying, maybe he was crying because he was reliving the past when he hurt his family. And like Mat said, the figure that gets left out and rejected could've been us. Maybe we were sad and rejected because we were getting abused by the neighbor, our father. BUT HEY THAT'S JUST A THEORY!A G- okay I'm done.
I have a minor theory. What if the shadow figure isn't the devil himself, but the neighbor's wife who made the deal, resulting in her becoming what she is. This may explain why the neighbor has the book Faust, he is trying to find out if there is any sort of way to save her soul. When we first see him panicking and barricading the door, he is just trying to stop her from leaving. He is crying due to him not being able to help her so far. This theory also makes sense considering that Eve, Adam's wife, is the one to listen to the devil, biting the apple he offers, committing the first sin.
Alright I'll give this a shot, why not? *WARNING: ITS LONG AND DARK* The neighbor, who I'll call Greg because....Greg, is the youngest of four children to workaholic parents. They're hardly around, and with his three other siblings he gets even less attention. His birthday is not different, and that's what hits him the hardest, so he recreated his own ideal party in his house. For the phonogram, he was at his grandparent's with his siblings because his parents went in a vacation without them. He gets so frustrated that he breaks her phonogram, and in doing so cuts his right ring finger (which leads to a permanent scar). It was good to finally get his anger out, so whenever he was upset he's destroy something. It went downhill further and further until an accident, I'm not sure what but it probably involved his wife/family, happened. He makes a deal with a devil to forget all of it, and live a happy life. The devil gives him a big house with a roller coaster, a pool, all the things he didn't have as a child. For the first time in his life, Greg is genuinely happy. Except the devil, being the devil, has played him. He makes room designed just to make the man remember his nightmares (fear rooms) and the man goes insane. He does not see another soul for a long time. Then, someone moves in across the street. It's a woman. The neighbor doesn't think much of it, until he catches her in his house. He snaps. He takes her and keeps her in his basement, even if it's just to be able to see another human being. Neighbor after neighbor moves in, and neighbor after neighbor goes missing (screams from the basement). He locks them in because they're his only source of human contact, and he doesn't want them to leave. The shadowy figure is probably just the devil keeping the neighbor in check. Wow that was really long, sorry lol. Congrats to you if you read all the way down here
What I think is that the neighbor wants to be a god. After having 4 children he makes a deal with the devil to have a seed to grow the tree of Eden. The devil gives the neighbor a seed in exchange for 3/4 of his children. Desperate for the power, the neighbor makes this deal. But the surprising part is that you are his remaining child. This would explain why he pushes you away from him. He wants to hide the fact that he gave your brothers away. This also explains why he was crying. He's in grief that he gave his children away. And maybe, the shadow man is the three combined souls of the children. That would explain why the neighbor doesn't want that thing getting out of the basement. His basement could also be the portal to death itself, or like you said, a purgatory. This is only my theory and I think it's pretty good
Kaiser Neko this is a good, theory, only thing is that I think that rather the shadow person being the 3 combined souls, I'd think each fear room houses 1 of the children
If the golden apple is the saviour of the shadow man, and you are the fallen child and the golden apple, are you there to save the neighbour and free him? Will you reveal the truth to the neighbour?
I'm no theorist but, here's one you should do mat, the game slime rancher, I can't help but feel weirded out by reading the notes H left behind, about this girl Beatrix, and we never got to know the origins of him, also in the ancient ruins note, it said something about "I left this for you Beatrix" could you be Beatrix? I mean you are a girl in the game, and also why is there no one else on the planet? Why is it just you? Maybe H left it all there for you, but where is H? What happened to him? As I said I'm no theorist, but I think matt can solve this one, let him see this comment pls
like what angry waffle ninja said, the new release says that you are beatrix but those messages are still creepy as all hell!!! like they're talking about this guy wanting to end it all and stuff about this person he loved but i assume something went wrong?? i really wanna know his story and if there's any more connection between him and your character
I always thought the reason you didn't see anyone is just because their ranches are on different land masses? And their are other people on the Far Far Range. You can trade with them via the machine, who's name I can't remember.
Wait a minute. The ring finger, the woman and two children (coughing child and baby) locked in the basement, the car crash... what if the Neighbour's wife and kids died in a car crash and the deal he made with the Devil was to get them back somehow? I'm thinking he maybe kidnapped a family that resembled them -- a young woman with two kids -- and plans to use their bodies as vessels for the souls of his own lost family. Certainly that would explain the sobbing, as well as the symbolism of having a bandage on his ring finger. They were ripped away from him, leaving a "wound", so to speak. Just my little amateur theory. EDIT: I should probably read the comments before I start typing -- I've seen almost this exact theory before, also the game is out now so like... it's almost certainly wrong. BUT WHATEVER I LIKE TO PRETEND
Alex Summers actually, the books (there are currently 2) suggest that you are pretty close to the truth. I’ve only read the first, but it has a lot of useful information. The wife dies in a car wreck, and the neighbor’s daughter runs away. This leads the neighbor to believe his son is a “BAD OMEN”.
Dominic Saldivar, one of the victims who is feared dead in Houston was a Game Theory fan. His picture on Nightly News had him wearing a Game Theory shirt.
Sona Amer he is a boy from Houston, who is missing with his family of 6, when his families van was submerged under all the rain water from Hurricane Harvey, when I saw his picture on the National News he had a Game Theory shirt on. The family of 6 including Dominic Saldivar is feared dead.
That us have a moment of silence for the young child and theorist that may have been lost in a tragic accident. And for everyone else we have lost during the storm
What if you, the player, made a deal with the devil? The neigbour is your father or brother, who tries to imprison the devil, and keep you safe from it, that's why you never get hurt when he finds you but he jsut throws you out. Or maybe the devil took the form of the neighbour (your brother father friend whatever) and keeps what you payed to him in the house. Or he simply employed the neigbour, who is unrelated to you, the player, to keep you from whatever you had to pay to the devil for the deal you made.
they can still be the same. They can be about experiances the neighbour went through. Or they can be fears that you, the player, went through in the past. Or something both of you went through and thus be the things that link you if it's not family. Everything can still be the same as Matt sais it, it would all still fit, even if the one who made the deal is you. The conclusion will just be different.
A lot of this specific theory is right and it’s surprising to see someone just guess this when the full game wasent even out yet, especially BC hello neighbor 2 alpha 1and 1.5 is out now.
This is my theory: 1. The neighbor is your father. He just cant remeber you because he thinks you are dead when you are still a child because...... 2. Your mom died in a car crash with you but you are saved and the evidence for that is the bacement in alpha 1 with a mannequin holding a baby with a crib. 3. So the neighbor (your father) had a deal with the devil (shadow) So that you and your mom will come alive. (Again he doesnt know that you are alive) 4. He conducted demonic rituals and kidnapped children. In basement alpha 1 the position of candles form a star and the screams behind that door. 5. The golden apple symbolizes the agreement of the neighbor (your father) and the devil. And all other signs symbolizes the devil. The painting. The golden cow on the mug. The sign near the gramaphone. All other signs in the movie are all about the devil to remind the agreement of the neighbor (your father) and the devil. But hey thats just a theory.... My crazzy theory and cut Edit: Thank you for the likes and comments
I dont think they died i think they dissapeared. It would explain why there are missing posters. I think the Neighbor was doing satanic rituals and the mother and the player ran away. But the Neighbor thinks they were murderd by the devil. So he tries a deal with the devil and tries summoning them. But they arent dead so it doesent work. He still believes you were dead and the deal just didnt work and when he see us he thinks we arent real and we are Fake. Later in the Game he finds out that we are real and helps us defeat the devil (the shadow / the thing) which would explain the shhhhhhh... scene from the trailer But heyy... thats just a theory... A gAAAAme theory... Thanks for reading...
I think you’ll be happy to know that I watch your videos with the explicit intention of learning how to over complicate the story of the game I am helping develop.
I think the golden apple has someone to do with the apple of discord. Ya know the apple that caused the Trojan war. Well maybe the golden apple is supposed to represent whenever something bad happens in his or your life. The golden apples appear in fear rooms and lead you to a moment of sadness. Idk the Iliad said something that the apple made people sad and jealous
PsychoSound But Paris had to decide the most beautiful Goddess with the apple. Aphrodite bribed him with the love of the most beautiful woman. Helen. So in a way the apple which even Goddesses yearned started he Trojan War.
The russian words are messed up a lot intentionally. There is definitely something behind it. Every word has 4+ mistakes in it so those words are barely understandable even for russians. Couldn't be done by an accident.
Those words are just anagrams - most of the times they just swap the consonants around the vowel, so they are still readable (at least to me idk). It as if instead of ballroom they'd write rabmooll or barlloom. But for sure, that wasn't done by accident, it may actually imply that The Neighbour/Our Hero (since we see everything through his eyes) is dyslexic. P.S At around 11:30 of the video MatPat says the viewer helped him decode the Metro text and it said Subway of the Subconscious while the Russian text actually says Леньмица (Мельница) - The Mill and Холпая Мокнапия (Плохая Компания) - Bad Company. So as long as I'm not missing anything, the translation given to MatPat was wrong.
Вячеслав Сергеевич it might be just another reference to childhood, since such mistakes (misplacing letters/syllables) are usually made by very young children. At least I haven't seen a grown up writing леньмица instead of мельница :D
There's a condition called dyslexia - it's when a person's brain can't properly analyze the words so they see those words with some misplaced letters, that's literally the way we see them in the game. If we assume that the city the game is not a simulation or smth, if it's kinda an ordinary Russian city, it would be weird if the sign on the hospital was written all mixed up and no one in the city noticed that. I think that the person we are playing as is dyslexic, and since we see everything through his eyes, it would make sense for us to also see the words the way he would see them, that's why they look so weird. No child in the world would make mistakes in literally every word ever to the point where when you read it outloud it sounds nothing like an original word. Like, if a young child was asked to write a word подсознание they would probably try to write it the way they hear it, something like падсазнанее, but they wouldn't write it like сопнодзание - the way we see that word in the game.
Matpat! My theory is that the shadow person is either the neighbors (or your) father or mother. The fear room where you are in the grocery store is a metaphor of your parents forgetting you're there, and leaving you behind when you're not looking. The school fear room is kinda like a bully situation where the parents don't do anything to help their child. Of course, the pantry fear room is obvious, the parent(s) locked you in the pantry for being naughty or not listening to them. And the basement, well, that's just the kid trying to hide from the obviously horrible parents. The shadow person (aka his parent ) is a person that he wants to leave behind, but he can't. His horrible past. Making the deal with the devil is to show he needs help to overcome his past, but it keeps stalking him. Never letting go, because the scars and neglect of his childhood run deep. To sum it up, I think this game is about a broken man, with a broken childhood. I don't care if I'm wrong or right, I just feel like this is a part of it. It's my theory, deal with it, and feel free to correct me! ( edit ) Thanks for all the likes and comments! I really appreciate it!
I think the shadow person is his sister, like he said there is a lot of imagery of four that makes a mother a father a brother… And a sister. Also there is a missing poster on one of the houses of a boy and a girl. I'm guessing that she was the favorite child with him being left in the background neglected then there was a car crash and she died everyone was distraught and the neighbor tried to get her back but all that was left was a shadow, a shadow girl Edit- The mom also possibly died in the car crash, you probably had dreams of running away with the circus and maybe possibly did but the neighbor or his presence follows you and that's why we see clown imagery in earlier installments. Also I think that it's a pizza truck that hit them in the crash, in the lake in the game there is a crashed pizza truck
3 children stay, one falls. Three angels stay, one falls. Three mannequin have fun, one is sad. Three eggs normal, one cracked, but has a golden apple. I personally believe that whatever the mannequins are symbolising is the devil himself, but I'm not smart enough to tie it all together.
Can I just say that the golden calf from the other episode saved my grade because I binge watched your theories instead of studying for my test which had a question that I could answer with the golden calf story so thank you
All bosses outside of casino in cuphead:I know,I know Me:I can award u with the highest honor I can bestow. *Shows you this meme* Me:No need to thank me
My best theory I can possibly think of with this information would be that the Neigbor is your father, and that the Neighbor's wife (aka your mother) died at some pont. Maybe the Neighbor was being offered a way to get her back, but he had to do something in return. Maybe that 'something' he had to do in return was a bad thing, sort of a 'crime' maybe.. And using the locations on the map (Hospital, Factory and Church) I made a little idea of the story behind it all. Maybe the Neighbor's family and/or wife was a cristan, or a follow of god. And his wife worked at a factory, but then one day at her work.. Some accident happend. Wich resulted in her death. Now I don't know what the 'accident' might be, but it might not even be an accident. What if someone killer her, for some reason. Maybe she did something bad, or a 'sin.' The Neighbor was obviously devistated, and wanted his wife back. One day, maybe some sort of 'devil' had an offer for him: He could get his wife back, if her hurt (or killed) his son. He didn't want to kill/hurt his son, but he did it anyways. So the son was abused, then eventually he escaped and moved out.. Then the son moved back in town, across from his dad. Maybe that 'devil' was locked in the Neighbors basement, and he didn't want to hurt his son anymore. But any time when his son would try to visit, he would knock him out, then take him back to his son's house. Just a theory, it's probably not true.. But at least I used my brian for something. XD
So we know the neighbor has/had one wife one son and one doughter. Thanks to a picture in a secret room. the wife died in the car accident and the doughter was pushed of the roof by the son. She died ( not gonna write Any proof, but if you want it i can give it to you just ask) The neighbor then hid his son and put up posters so the pubblic would not know it was him that hid his son. This i assume becuase we get help fram a small boy when we are capured as a child and put in a cage by the neighbor. Would like to talk to you more and share facts.
The fact that this writing on 11:33 can be translated to english as “mindWill - aBd moCnapy (Windmill - Bad Company)” just makes this vid a 1000 times better
Just one tiny thing that you missed: in the shots of the apples on the shelves of the grocery store, on the top shelf there are four golden apples with one apart from the other three beside what seems to be a bend in the shelf implying it might snap. I mean it's not important but I thought I'd say anyway.
my theory: neighbor hides not a shadow boy, but the evil variation of himself in the basement. 1) at the beginning, we hear a terrifying scream, coming from the basement and we see the neighbor running away from it. at the end, we see the giant neighbor screaming exactly the same way. 2) the neighbor that is outside the basement does not hurt us, he just tries to keep us outside the house. 3) when we go to the basement, the neighbor is already there, even though we left him outside. Edit: thanks for all the likes everyone. I thought it would lost in the comments (I even liked my comment after 10 minutes of waiting)
Actually there is a hidden posters that shows 2 kids missing, when you wake up and hear the screaming its one of the kids, the kid kicks the neighbor or something, tries to run but the neighbor locks him into the basement.
Gregory Ewart there is only reference to fruit from the tree of knowledge. It never says apple. Let alone golden. Pop culture as well as possibly old Christian imagery try to say it was the apple but no translation of any biblical text claim this at all. So the Greek angle is much more solid.
11:28 It most certainly does NOT read "Subway of the subconscious" in Russian Those are anagrams for "мельница" - mill, and "плохая компания" - bad company (edited, thanks to comments)
Nurpus не уверен по поводу лестницы, по мне больше похоже на анаграму от слова "мельница", а вот за плохую компанию спасибо. Долго тупил, пока пытался разобрать надпись
As a native russian speaker, I'm 100% with "Mill" and "Bad company". It's not even close to "metro of subconscience", which would be "Метро подсознания". The game uses anagrams, but as you can see this words have differents letters and amout of simbols. Looks like that RUclipsr can only read MattPat subreddit but not Russian words lol.
I just so happen to have the switch version of Hello Neighbor, and it reveals a lot about the Neighbor... each of the alpha and beta builds turn into three different acts and a finale, witch i have not accessed yet. As the Neighbor catches you, you will occasionally have a Nightmare, were you get a cutscene of the Neighbor's past. These show the death of the wife in a car crash, the Neighbor struggling to deal with the player, the son pushing the daughter off the roof, and the daughter dying in her hospital bed, in that order. I have not seen the nightmares for act 3 or finale yet, but I will eventually...
Dear matpat, There is a verse in the Bible about golden apples and a bowl of silver. I don't know where it was but I thought it was worth mentioning. Yours truly, Internet
"Timely advice is lovely, like golden apples in a silver basket." Proverbs 25:11 I don't think there's any connection between this and the game though.
golden apples are a greek mythology thing and are used to sow dischord like when paris was asked to judge which godess was more beautiful, the serpent offers eve an unspecified fruit though it has often been portrayed as an apple this is not represented in the text. golden apples are used at other points in greek mythology as well such as when melanion used them to distract atlanta from a race so that he could beat her and win her hand in marriage
Hi Matt, thanks for the great video! By the way, about those Russian writings. You probably didn't noticed, since it's not your language, but pretty much all of them were... strange. Like they meant nothing, unless you change the letters around. Almost all consonants were reversed like this: hospital -- sohtipal(госпиталь -- согтипаль) or Happy birthday -- PPahy thibday(С днем рождения -- С ндем жордения) and so on... I'm not sure what to make of it. Maybe those are hint's that there is something wrong with every location where there are those letters. Like, something corrupted, reversed them or something like that. Also, about those railway writings. It's the same thing. Леньмица and холпая мокнапия mean absolutely nothing... unless you change the consonants. Suddenly the become: Мельница and плохая компания -- Windmill and bad company. Hell if I know what the developers meant. Maybe something about the the Neighbour’s past? So, about the subway of subconscious... it's not there. At least not in this picture. After all, Lena could simply translate the writing from a previous build, or interpret it in her own way. I don't really have an answer, and we probably won't receive one until the game is released. Just wanted to give you some possible puzzle pieces. I hope, they'll help you at least a little :) Anyway, again thank you for an interesting and entertaining video. Good luck in December! P.s After some research I found the subway of subconscious. Sorry, for the doubts Lena! But they had the same thing: not the "Метрополитен подсознания" but "Термолетипен сопнодзания".
It's common thing for dreams. You cant read inside a dream because your mind wont be able to focus on words making them look like you have dyslexia. Proves the point about purgatory or maybe coma
You know, that actually makes sense, especially given everything else that's in the game. MatPat should really take this into consideration for his next theory. Thanks)
Okay, here's a thought: What if the Neighbor is the Player character's father, and that the Deal with the Demon (still not sure if it's Lucifer/Satan, Mephistopholes, or something else) the Neighbor made was to bring his family back. However, he didn't realize until after the deal was done that the price was not just *his* soul, but also the soul of his only living relative left: *the player character.* If this is so, then the Neighbor realizes that the player character would lose his soul and is trying to stop the demon from taking it. The reason why he would kill the player is because he's sure that if the player character dies before the demon gets him, then that soul could be safe as the player character had nothing to do with the deal with the devil.
Your theory was literally confirmed by a new secret boss fight found in the modding kit, I'm sure that you already know about it but I'm going to go into a long lecture about it anyway. During this "boss fight" the neighbour is used as a stand-in for a child, which we can infer is us because of the "like father like son" achievement, hinting that the neighbour is indeed our father, and is just metaphorically represented as a childhood version of us. Then, the Shadow man appears, now fully decked out with some spicy new blue eyes, and attempts to kill the child, or better yet, has come to collect his half of the deal.
Seriously?! Took me a while to get to this comment and I haven't been looking into Hello Neighbor that much lately, but this theory I posed was seriously confirmed?!
What if the"fallen child", the one who was always alone in the groups of four, is the Neighbor? What if he was disrespected and in solitude as a child, and losing his wife and having his kids move out from fear was the breaking point that made him want to sell his soul to the devil to get them all back, and be able to enjoy his childhood properly?
Following the over protective father theory, the old basement had the word "exit" written above, so also assuming you are not in reality and possibly in some form of purgatory, maybe your father (the neighbour) made a deal with the devil to keep you safe in purgatory so you don't meet the same fate that your mother (the neighbours wife) did and die in an accident (which I assume was a car crash) EDIT: just read another older comment with the exact same theory, glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this is possible
The 'fear rooms' could act as reminders of times when you were in fear and barely got out, making you want to stay in purgatory in fear they could happen again. It also makes sense since the neighbour doesn't hurt You, he just tries to keep you home. And uses glue to make you STICK around ;)
sTØP the stupid fangirl usernames at the discØ! (Here is my theory)Ok so if you are the neighbors son then him keeping whats in the basment from you is his protecting you. Ok now then The three locations could have their own story you're working at a light house you get injured he goes to the church to pray for you when that doesn't work you die in thw hospital then feeling regret and sadness he makes the deal with the devil who brings you back and the golden apple could represent the sacrifice god made for adam and eve when they first sinned he had to kill a lamb and make clothes for them later jesus had to die on the cross making the final sacrifice so the neighbor could have done the same giving his soul to save yours and watching over you in the past life
*SPOILERS* I'm a little disappointed by the final outcome of the game, Matpat's theories were way more in-depth and creative, they actually formed a great story/mystery. Having the whole thing turn out to be merely a dream was a little unfulfilling. The game itself was still very interesting to play, though.
It could be a dream, from the fact that the giant Neighbor watching you to the fact that we can go back and redo the 'past' actions, I can see why it CAN be a dream. But there is the fact that we 'die', we are buried, we only see up to the point that we get our death door closed. We are never given anything else to work with but to assume that we died, or we are unburied. Ima let you figure that one out!
Wrench Gaming -- The WHOLE thing isn't a dream. But after your character is all grown up and moves back to his old house and then falls asleep on the couch; from that point on, it appears to be a dream [nightmare], as when you finish the game, he wakes back up from that same spot seeming relieved. ThnxCya has a much more logical outlook on a game.
0:41 What's this? Matthew Patrick is evolving! Congrats! Your Matthew Patrick has evolved into A Sleepless Version of Matthew Santoro *Would you like to name your A Sleepless Version of Matthew Santoro?* *YES* *NO, LEAVE IT*

To everyone saying "Matpat is getting terrible" and "Matpat sucks" and "Matpat's just reusing theories", you have to realise that this is not an easy job to have. Mat has to write an entire ~15 minute script for every episode, piecing together all these bits and pieces into a coherent theory that people will watch and enjoy watching. In a single week, he needs to know a game well enough to find clues, identify them, put them together, and write about them. This week /was/ going to determine the entire Hello Neighbour story, if the game had been on track, however it was suddenly delayed, and now you have MatPat with a script prepared, that he cannot use, and a much closer deadline. Of course he's going to have to salvage what he can, because otherwise there is no theory for us to enjoy. I'd just like to point out my own support for the Game Theorists, and say that if anyone of you whiners in the comments tried to do their job, you would see how difficult it is. Love you, MatPat!
So true. People may argue that he wrote better theories in the past. That may be, but only because he has far more on his plate now, like his full time consulting job, film theory, gt live, game lab, etc.
My theory is that the neighbor is your father and that he was abusive. Your mother died in an accident when you were somewhat young (7-10ish) and he blames you and therefore mistreated you. He locked you in the pantry, purposely tried to lose you in the store, ruined your birthday party, and IDK about the classroom thing but something happened. The hospital building represents/is there for when your mother died. You eventually ran away. You found work at the factory. Once you have money you take your revenge on your father, you summon the devil/a demon to haunt and torture him. BUT THAT'S JUST A THEORY! A GAME THEORY! THANKS FOR READING!
Amber Daezea Interesting. And maybe the classroom is a memory of him telling his class he's moving away or something. I think that the shadow in all of the fear rooms is the neighbor but he looks so dark and scary because that is how the child sees him.
Amber Daezea Good theory... but I think the "summoning a devil" is for the neighbor. Also, the character so far hasn't given "revenge" to the neighbor, either.
MatPat! If you compete the second latest build of Hello Neighbor, in the boss with the giant neighbor, the house on on his back doesn't have a door. The newest build now has a door. If you restart once you complete the game and you walk a few steps forward, you will see a barcode on the screen. If you download an app that scans barcodes, and scan the barcode in Hello Neighbor that you see it will say a special text. Hope you try it! I have not tested it myself but it works. (maybe) 😉 I love your channel and hope you read this!
There's a story in Greek Mythology about a golden apple too. The story goes something like this... "Zeus held a banquet in celebration of the marriage of Peleus and Thetis (parents of Achilles). However, Eris, goddess of discord was not invited, for it was believed she would have made the party unpleasant for everyone. Angered by this snub, Eris arrived at the celebration with a golden apple from the Garden of the Hesperides, which she threw into the proceedings as a prize of beauty (In some later versions of the story its said there was an inscription on the apple translated from Greek to English as "To/for the fairest one") Three goddesses attempted to claim the apple for themselves: Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. They asked Zeus to judge which of them was fairest, and eventually he, reluctant to face the anger of the other 2 Goddesses should he choose one of them, declared that Paris, a Trojan mortal, would judge their cases, for he had recently shown his exemplary fairness in a contest in which Ares in bull form had bested Paris's own prize bull, and the shepherd-prince had unhesitatingly awarded the prize to the god. While Paris inspected them, each attempted with her powers to bribe him; Hera offered to make him king of Europe and Asia, Athena offered wisdom and skill in war, and Aphrodite, who had the Charites and the Horai to enhance her charms with flowers and songs, offered the world's most beautiful woman. This was Helen of Sparta, wife of the Greek king Menelaus. Paris accepted Aphrodite's gift and awarded the apple to her, receiving Helen as well as the enmity of the Greeks and especially of Hera." To paraphrase the last bit this incident with the Golden apple of Discord led directly to the Trojan War. It oddly connects loosely to the Bible since Lucifer is said to be waging war on God and his ilk constantly. I also find it interesting that there are 4 [main] characters in this story, Paris, Hera, Athena and Aphrodite and that there's a difference made between them (that being 3 of them are immortal Goddesses and one is not immortal or a god)
what if YOU died in a car crash the game, and the neighbor (aka your father) revived you by making a deal with the devil, the deal was the neighbor would get a golden apple, that can revive someone you think of while eating it, then the neighbor tried to plant the apple again so he can revive another person, your mother maybe? but he just couldn't do it, then the devil tried to comeback and punish the neighbor for recreating the apples but the neighbor locked him up in the basement, which is why the neighbor is trying to keep you out, or better, trying to keep the devil in! another thing that supports the theory is that as of right now, the neighbor is a stranger, or at least you think he is, I mean, u were kicked out of the house because of being broke, that meant you spent your money, and judging on the neighbor's house, he got or had lots of money, which means that if you were his son, he spent all his money trying to make you recover from the accident, and trying to protect you from the devil, which is why he didn't remind you who he was, but hey, that's just a theory, a game theory! edit: OMG 500 likes, and I was a noob and wrote it theorie, fixed that.. lol thanks for reading.
while it's certainly possible it's the apple of discord, many religions have fruit-based symbolism, with the omnipresent one being "the golden apples of immortality", which appear in legends from the netherlands to the mediterranean and all the way to vietnam. so, rather than guess based on "fruit symbolism", we should try and fit the symbolism into the style of the game. and if the game's going for christianity and not greek, it's more likely to be the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil rather than the apple of discord or the apple of immortality.
Theory: The neighbor is your dad and you were ostracised by him, and to make things right, he made a deal with the devil to bring you back to him. But because the devil always has loopholes in his deals, he made your neighbor/father seem very suspicious to you with the ultimate goal of you turning on him and, in the end, killing him. Then the devil will either leave you alone after collecting the neighbors soul, or repeat the process on you with the goal of collecting your soul when you do it.
Matpatt, the golden apple could be the apple from Greek myrhology. There is the golden apple that starts the Trojan War, however there is also the apples of the hysperiades(name butchered badly) which strongly enough could turn someone who ate it a Greek god. If you need to look it up, look at Hercules trials, as one such trial was about the the apple itself.
Honestly I think that could be correct. There is no "apple of knowledge" on the book of Genesis. There is a "tree of knowledge" and the fruit of said tree, but its never mentioned what kind of tree. On greek and norse mytholy there is a golden tree with golden apples.
gnulime It could be borse, but I feel it's a lot more likely to be greek. The fruit in the garden of eden was said by the serpent to make you just like god and that really makes the connection stronger for me overall as the fruits I mentioned made you like god. The Greek version I feel would definitely connect to the Devils view of becoming like god. However if the Norse fruit does have special properties that you know of please feel free to tell me as that could also be important to the theory I have that there are going to be multiple bosses from different mythologies.
I actually thought the same Z Taylor... I'll move my post into your reply section: The golden apple seems a lot more Greek than it does Christian. There's a few tales involving a golden apple, but two seem potentially relevant (the latter more than the former). First, there was the story where Paris (of Iliad fame) was made to judge which of three goddesses was the most beautiful, they being Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena, with the winner receiving the golden apple. Aphrodite offered him the most beautiful woman in the world as a bride (the already-married Helen) and so he chose her. By choosing Aphrodite (or honestly, by making any judgement whatsoever; the dude was screwed and couldn't back out of it as Zeus had assigned him this task) he essentially doomed himself, as his abduction of Helen would trigger the Trojan War and the spurned and ticked off goddesses Athena and Hera would help to orchestrate his later downfall. This one doesn't seem to match up too well with the game... there are four people involved, of course, but they weren't equals as the images suggest (one being a human, the others gods). While one would fall as a result of this golden apple, there's not much else tying it to the game. The other story that seems to match a great deal better is the 11th Labor of Heracles. In it, he is sent to retrieve the golden apples of Hesperides. Heracles eventually encounters Atlas who is eternally stuck holding up the skies. Heracles offers to hold up the sky if Atlas will retrieve the apples (he being related to Hesperides), but upon returning Atlas decides he no longer wishes to hold up the sky. Heracles then tricks him by convincing him to briefly hold the sky up while he readjusted his tunic, and then took off the moment Atlas took over, bringing the apples with him. This seems to fit for a number of reasons. First, the apples are actually golden (there is no mention of "golden apples" in the Torah or the Bible; in fact, they didn't even specify what fruit it was). Also, in this instance there are many golden apples, which matches the large collection of them in the house (it would seem odd that they'd include so many golden apples if they're referencing a singular apple, with many of them resting on the same shelf). Finally, the whole "holding up the sky" thing is interesting... for one, the house seems absurdly high, almost as if it is doing precisely that. Second, just as Heracles was (for a time) trapped holding up the sky as a result of his quest for the golden apples, this man also seems to be trapped performing some important task, keeping something in and being exceedingly torn up about it. The golden apples could represent some trade he made with the devil that backfired, as that would align almost perfectly with Heracles, Atlas, and the sky. Heck, I wouldn't even be surprised if the end twist of the game is that you wind up taking his place. Regardless, while there's plenty of biblical stuff in the game it seems to me that perhaps we're stretching to make the "golden apples" fit in the bible when the much more natural fit was with the original golden apples stories of the Greeks. It's certainly possible that there's multiple sources behind the mythos of this game.
9:10 *Is the yellow bull on the neighbor's cup a symbol too? To me it would make sense since the devil is sometimes described as a man with horns. (Sometimes he is a man with a demon tail and wings. Or just wings, just a demon tail, or just horns. Or everything.)*
The fact that you, (the player character) could be the one in the mannequin birthday party, is really interesting. I've come up with a theory that ties all your lose ends. The neighbour had a wife, and a son. You, are the son and the wife is unknown. Your mother passes away, leaving just you and the neighbour. On your birthday party, something happens to you. You may have died, or disappeared, or what, but the neighbour is heart broken. So he sells his soul to satan to get you back. The reason you didn't just move out, is fact it wouldn't make sense. If you had just normally moved out the neighbour wouldn't have a reason to sell his soul. And, you would recognize your father and refuse to invade his house. Who knows, maybe the devil was the one who mysteriously killed you. Either way, the neighbour, after years of being alone sells his soul to save you. And this somehow makes you magically pop back into existence... Forgetting about your past with the neighbour. And maybe the apple of knowledge will help you and the neighbour realize you related, and defeat the devil together.
when you were talking about the apple and then the child who looked like it was "falling" or being dropped, i just suddenly thought of the phrase "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree", meaning the child or offspring is very much like the parent. maybe the neighbour is afraid of something that happened to his father or mother, and perhaps made a deal with the devil to prevent that from happening to himself or future children? EDIT: As for the other three apples/children, they're most likely the neighbour's siblings and maybe they suffered the same fate as the parents and only the neighbour lived. Perhaps they were so much like the parents, and hence to avoid what happened to them, the neighbour associated with the devil. Then again, this is really purely speculation and doesn't have much to substantiate. If anyone could help with this theory, that would be great :))
If you noticed when matpat showed the stacks of unreachable golden apples, on the top shelf, there are three grouped golden apples and one to the right on its side.
The levels of the house represent the brain/subconscious of the neighbour. The house is warped but has happy bright colours which is akin to the twisted mind of the neighbour who is putting on a pleasant facade to distract from the looming secrets within. The basement is the domain of the dark sin that the neighbour has committed and what he is trying to hide from the world... your character knows this secret or at least knows OF it and is trying to expose it. When you enter the basement in alpha 4 you discover a dark and broken world that is representative of the neighbour's inner mind. Other than being underground, there is a raging furnace down there alluding to hell. I am going to say that the dark apparition is either a literal demon(or the devil) that is residing in the neighbour's mind wreaking havoc on his psyche or more likely, the shadow is the evil parallel of the neighbour that was born from the sins/horrors of his past. *The neighbour is trying to suppress his demon out of fear (fear rooms) and YOU are coming to save him from himself.* TLDR: The basement contains the neighbour's inner demons that you gotta purge
Could the fear rooms show our fears instead of the neighbour's. Maybe he made them to block off intruders and the golden apple either means to find knowledge or the sin the comes with having it.
What if the shadow is the Neighbor's wife? When he struck the deal with the devil to bring her back to life after the car crash, her body was too mangled to retain anything that looked human. So, in turning her into a monster and possibly being responsible for her death, now she's hunting him. I'm just going to assume as such a taboo thing as summoning the devil is, the Neighbor had to do it in the basement, where he placed his beloved upon a 5 star circle(5 stars - XXreviewerXX) and struck the deal. However, the above mentioned body mangling and the psychological scarring of waking up a bloody reanimated corpse drove her up the proverbial wall. Thus, the Neighbor has to keep her locked down there, eyes on her at all times, Not just for his safety, but the safety of anyone see meets if she gets out. Hence him crying in a corner slowly realizing, once someone is gone, no matter what you do, they're never coming back. And if they are they're still going to be a blood thirsty zombie ghost thing. BUT THAT'S JUST A THEORY, A BAD THEORY. ps, blood is usually censored to the color black hence the black appearance instead of red.
PS. and that the devil symbols are just representing the evil ppss or that the shadow is worry that is part of his deal with the devil meant to bring him eternal suffering?
The golden apple is also in Greek mythology. It is refered to as the Apple of chaos and is created by Eris, the Goddess of Chaos, and it starts a HUGE war.
Rory Mercury at the first theory I tweeted to MatPat about people stealing wives and golden apples being so similar to Troy's war (sorry if that's the wrong name- I'm italian)

That's a really good point. It's a pity that matpat probs won't see it. :(
When I moved into the third house of my life, I was scared of the stairs because they didn't have solid-ness on the back, making me think I would injure my foot or fall through. I was an idiot. I know that the stairs looked much longer, too.
@@scoutintime I used to have stairs like that, I used to have a toy of a guy with a functioning parachute and I dropped him off. One of my best childhood memories
bro why no repllies
(i know if i caught someone sneaking into my house not once but like 500 times i'd break someones leg at least)
there was a crash, your mother died. (insert simpsons, you do it for her snapshot)
now as an adult you are trying to save your father from eternal damnation. you relive the fears from your past, where your father had to save you to prove to him that you can now take care of yourself and free him from his contract.
boom, solved.
That actually makes sense, and sounds very plausible.
NoESanity Ok..What about the shadowman?
NoESanity nice you solved it for him
swigwig The shadowman could be the incorporeal neighbor/father while the devil is possessing his body.

HockeyTanker 10/10 that was awesome
Nah I think that your character is an agent of satan trying to get the family to take there souls because the neighbour did something
Yo calm down Jamal ok you don't have to type that
@@ihavenodogs you don’t have to type this on an abuse victims comment, Y’know?
And uh, actually what you describe does kinda sound like abuse. You should never hit your kid for being bad, it just makes them *scared*. Speaking as someone who always saw what his dad did as normal, and disciplinary, and for what it was, abuse.
In Alpha 1 remember the car tire rolling out of the door? Wife dying in car crash? Reference to the past? There are definitely some ties here
Blizzrobe Yea that's some serious matter!
Blizzrobe but when he gets out of the room look at the way his hands move like if you just finished building something so the wife theory can be incorrect but you the player and the nieghbor can have some realation because maybe he was adopted? What do you think?
Big Nipples NO
YES!!!!! I WAS SO READY TO COMMENT THAT!!!! THANK YOU!!!

Right
Yes it is the entire back story to the neighbor
The neighbors wife was killed in a car crash and the brother accidentally pushed the the sister off a ledge very high up in the air your welcome
Yep
My Theory:
Neighbor is a doctor.
Has anyone played hello neighbor hide and seek?
Its explains everything that happened its literally the origin of the neighbor
Damn
This makes sense actually but a version of hello neighbor totally forgot what version, but the player! Is trying to move to a house which the player is familiar with but is all borded up yet later when the player enters the player was moved to the front house of the neighbor
Now that Mat has mentioned the idea of the neighbor being our father, I got my own theory:
In Alpha 2, when we enter the basement we can see two shadow figures that look like an adult with their child.

Well, he does have a wife, but maybe he re married?😅
bahaha i said the same thing in my head
Eh, they look kinda related to me. I think they’re brothers
*WARNING: ITS LONG AND DARK*
The neighbor, who I'll call Greg because....Greg, is the youngest of four children to workaholic parents.
Congrats to you if you read all the way down here
Jinx Lynx good luck getting likes
Jinx Lynx that makes sense, but something seems missing but idk what it is
Saul Rodriguez Not sure if that's sarcastic, but thanks!
Jinx Lynx surprisingly well thought out nice job.
Wow, this is actually a really good theory
Hardeep Chahal good theory. I guess you could say we make a pretty good team

It says in the very beginning of the new release that you are in fact Beatrix, so thats one mystery solved^^
like what angry waffle ninja said, the new release says that you are beatrix but those messages are still creepy as all hell!!! like they're talking about this guy wanting to end it all and stuff about this person he loved but i assume something went wrong?? i really wanna know his story and if there's any more connection between him and your character

Yes hello??
Alex Summers actually, the books (there are currently 2) suggest that you are pretty close to the truth. I’ve only read the first, but it has a lot of useful information. The wife dies in a car wreck, and the neighbor’s daughter runs away. This leads the neighbor to believe his son is a “BAD OMEN”.

I like your first theory, that's certainly an interesting take on it, but what about the fear rooms?
top one the first comment
they can still be the same.

This is my theory:
1. The neighbor is your father. He just cant remeber you because he thinks you are dead when you are still a child because......
2. Your mom died in a car crash with you but you are saved and the evidence for that is the bacement in alpha 1 with a mannequin holding a baby with a crib.
3. So the neighbor (your father) had a deal with the devil (shadow)
So that you and your mom will come alive. (Again he doesnt know that you are alive)
My crazzy theory and cut
Edit: Thank you for the likes and comments
Marc Johann A. Laguna this should get pinned
You meam the basement in alpha 2 right?
I dont think they died i think they dissapeared. It would explain why there are missing posters. I think the Neighbor was doing satanic rituals and the mother and the player ran away. But the Neighbor thinks they were murderd by the devil. So he tries a deal with the devil and tries summoning them. But they arent dead so it doesent work. He still believes you were dead and the deal just didnt work and when he see us he thinks we arent real and we are Fake. Later in the Game he finds out that we are real and helps us defeat the devil (the shadow / the thing) which would explain the shhhhhhh... scene from the trailer
But heyy...
thats just a theory...

Audrey Flavin Neighbor is hiding Eris?
That'd be more believable than the fruit of knowledge of good and evil.
The Trojan War was caused by Helen of Sparta being abducted and taken to Troy.
PsychoSound But Paris had to decide the most beautiful Goddess with the apple. Aphrodite bribed him with the love of the most beautiful woman. Helen. So in a way the apple which even Goddesses yearned started he Trojan War.
Audrey Flavin or its meant to be the Appel of Eden
Matpat says: Four is evil!
Guido Mista: Yes!
The russian words are messed up a lot intentionally. There is definitely something behind it. Every word has 4+ mistakes in it so those words are barely understandable even for russians. Couldn't be done by an accident.
Вячеслав Сергеевич since your name is Russian, Im going to believe you
They are understandable. All text made of anagrams... But yes) It is a bit hard)
CuteSepticGirl Martha cool
CuteSepticGirl Martha that's actually really good!!!
CuteSepticGirl Martha I was thinking of something similar xD great minds think alike
I think the shadow person is his sister, like he said there is a lot of imagery of four that makes a mother a father a brother… And a sister. Also there is a missing poster on one of the houses of a boy and a girl. I'm guessing that she was the favorite child with him being left in the background neglected then there was a car crash and she died everyone was distraught and the neighbor tried to get her back but all that was left was a shadow, a shadow girl
Edit- The mom also possibly died in the car crash, you probably had dreams of running away with the circus and maybe possibly did but the neighbor or his presence follows you and that's why we see clown imagery in earlier installments. Also I think that it's a pizza truck that hit them in the crash, in the lake in the game there is a crashed pizza truck
CuteSepticGirl Martha I like that theory
3 children stay, one falls. Three angels stay, one falls. Three mannequin have fun, one is sad. Three eggs normal, one cracked, but has a golden apple. I personally believe that whatever the mannequins are symbolising is the devil himself, but I'm not smart enough to tie it all together.

Maybe she did something bad, or a 'sin.'
The Neighbor was obviously devistated, and wanted his wife back.
XD
wow, I mean it could be true. who knows.
Wow I'm impressed... Well you earned a new subscriber congrats 😀
Why would u write all that
Becuz I can. XD

8:50 There is also the Golden Apple from Greek mythology. It's also known as the Apple of Discord.
There is a Apple of Skype too?
Golden apples are in all kinds of mythology, but the game has tons of other biblical references so it's probably the Christian one
What about the Apple of Mumble? And the Apple of Teamspeak?
Gregory Ewart there is only reference to fruit from the tree of knowledge. It never says apple. Let alone golden. Pop culture as well as possibly old Christian imagery try to say it was the apple but no translation of any biblical text claim this at all. So the Greek angle is much more solid.
Well, the Greek golden apple was said to grant immortality so.....

11:28 It most certainly does NOT read "Subway of the subconscious" in Russian
Those are anagrams for "мельница" - mill, and "плохая компания" - bad company
(edited, thanks to comments)
Nurpus не уверен по поводу лестницы, по мне больше похоже на анаграму от слова "мельница", а вот за плохую компанию спасибо. Долго тупил, пока пытался разобрать надпись
Nurpus Согласна
It`s definetely "Мельница"(Mill) and "Плохая компания" (Bad company)
The first word isn't 'лесница', but rather 'мельница' the 'Mill'
I have not seen the nightmares for act 3 or finale yet, but I will eventually...

golden apples are a greek mythology thing and are used to sow dischord like when paris was asked to judge which godess was more beautiful, the serpent offers eve an unspecified fruit though it has often been portrayed as an apple this is not represented in the text.
golden apples are used at other points in greek mythology as well such as when melanion used them to distract atlanta from a race so that he could beat her and win her hand in marriage
Jazzy it's Atalanta not atlanta
golden apples give absorption and regeneration...
I'll jump out a window now.
my b, it was a typo
I hope, they'll help you at least a little :)
Anyway, again thank you for an interesting and entertaining video. Good luck in December!
P.s After some research I found the subway of subconscious. Sorry, for the doubts Lena! But they had the same thing: not the "Метрополитен подсознания" but "Термолетипен сопнодзания".
Second that, no subway of subconscious in this game
let's bring this to the to, MatPat has to see this
It's common thing for dreams.

Airmanon nah
jonne puolitaival Any particular reason why not?
interesting...
Following the over protective father theory, the old basement had the word "exit" written above, so also assuming you are not in reality and possibly in some form of purgatory, maybe your father (the neighbour) made a deal with the devil to keep you safe in purgatory so you don't meet the same fate that your mother (the neighbours wife) did and die in an accident (which I assume was a car crash)
EDIT: just read another older comment with the exact same theory, glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this is possible

I'm a little disappointed by the final outcome of the game, Matpat's theories were way more in-depth and creative, they actually formed a great story/mystery. Having the whole thing turn out to be merely a dream was a little unfulfilling. The game itself was still very interesting to play, though.
Andrea Teres its not a dream

Yeah! Haters really don't know how hard it is to figure these things out
My theory is that the neighbor is your father and that he was abusive.
That's good
i hope you arent serious
Amber Daezea Interesting. And maybe the classroom is a memory of him telling his class he's moving away or something. I think that the shadow in all of the fear rooms is the neighbor but he looks so dark and scary because that is how the child sees him.
Amber Daezea Good theory... but I think the "summoning a devil" is for the neighbor. Also, the character so far hasn't given "revenge" to the neighbor, either.
Amber Daezea more like an amber theory 😉 thx for reading

The Hello Neighbor app: *hahahahahaha 😂*

Angered by this snub, Eris arrived at the celebration with a golden apple from the Garden of the Hesperides, which she threw into the proceedings as a prize of beauty (In some later versions of the story its said there was an inscription on the apple translated from Greek to English as "To/for the fairest one")
Three goddesses attempted to claim the apple for themselves: Hera, Athena and Aphrodite.
Paris accepted Aphrodite's gift and awarded the apple to her, receiving Helen as well as the enmity of the Greeks and especially of Hera."
To paraphrase the last bit this incident with the Golden apple of Discord led directly to the Trojan War.
The shadow created the box stacking mechanics.
So yeah, he's basically Satan.
your right
what if YOU died in a car crash the game, and the neighbor (aka your father) revived you by making a deal with the devil, the deal was the neighbor would get a golden apple, that can revive someone you think of while eating it, then the neighbor tried to plant the apple again so he can revive another person, your mother maybe? but he just couldn't do it, then the devil tried to comeback and punish the neighbor for recreating the apples but the neighbor locked him up in the basement, which is why the neighbor is trying to keep you out, or better, trying to keep the devil in! another thing that supports the theory is that as of right now, the neighbor is a stranger, or at least you think he is, I mean, u were kicked out of the house because of being broke, that meant you spent your money, and judging on the neighbor's house, he got or had lots of money, which means that if you were his son, he spent all his money trying to make you recover from the accident, and trying to protect you from the devil, which is why he didn't remind you who he was, but hey, that's just a theory, a game theory!
edit: OMG 500 likes, and I was a noob and wrote it theorie, fixed that.. lol
thanks for reading.

Was it ever considered that the golden apple is related to Discord and Chaos and the goddess Eris as opposed to Satan and Christianity?
Well, with a simple google search, you WOULD have seen that it's Greek. But apparently a search bar is too complicated.
while it's certainly possible it's the apple of discord, many religions have fruit-based symbolism, with the omnipresent one being "the golden apples of immortality", which appear in legends from the netherlands to the mediterranean and all the way to vietnam.
so, rather than guess based on "fruit symbolism", we should try and fit the symbolism into the style of the game. and if the game's going for christianity and not greek, it's more likely to be the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil rather than the apple of discord or the apple of immortality.
I'll move my post into your reply section:
The golden apple seems a lot more Greek than it does Christian.

*Is the yellow bull on the neighbor's cup a symbol too?
That makes so much sense!
Ella Luv that is passion
Ella Luv what about the mother and children the neighbour kidnap in the first video?
Charel Luciano Well, it's not like satan is gonna give you something and just let you off the hook.
Ella Luv yeah that kinda make sense, thanks for feedback i appreciate that.
when you were talking about the apple and then the child who looked like it was "falling" or being dropped, i just suddenly thought of the phrase "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree", meaning the child or offspring is very much like the parent. maybe the neighbour is afraid of something that happened to his father or mother, and perhaps made a deal with the devil to prevent that from happening to himself or future children?
EDIT: As for the other three apples/children, they're most likely the neighbour's siblings and maybe they suffered the same fate as the parents and only the neighbour lived. Perhaps they were so much like the parents, and hence to avoid what happened to them, the neighbour associated with the devil.
Then again, this is really purely speculation and doesn't have much to substantiate. If anyone could help with this theory, that would be great :))
Rayna Shan that sound good!
*The neighbour is trying to suppress his demon out of fear (fear rooms) and YOU are coming to save him from himself.*
TLDR: The basement contains the neighbour's inner demons that you gotta purge
This is brilliant! I totally agree and can completely see this happening. This is the only theory so far I have seen that makes sense to me 😊😊😊😊😊
Erika Evasiuk did you realize you said "that" 2 times..
I did not and have now fixed the typo
Could the fear rooms show our fears instead of the neighbour's. Maybe he made them to block off intruders and the golden apple either means to find knowledge or the sin the comes with having it.
Yeah yeah, I like that perspective!
therapist: bald matpat isn't real, he can't hurt you
bald matpat: 0:42
Here: The neighbor is keeping his family safe from satan.
Destrucanator Wow, reminds me of Fullmetal Alchemist in a way. Good theory!
Elijah I LOVE THAT MANGA SERIES!!!!
Destrucanator i thimk ur one to something
Destrucanator I don't think it's a bad theory. I think you're on to something!
That is almost better than the video... if not better. LOL! But seriously, I love it, you should start your own channel :-D
any one else think the shadow could resemble your/ the neighbors fear, worry, stress etc... looming over and following you around?
Nah, it's his debt. Because I mean with a house that big, someone's gotta pay the bills!
PS. and that the devil symbols are just representing the evil
ppss or that the shadow is worry that is part of his deal with the devil meant to bring him eternal suffering?
Wolf_lover_312 YUP XD
5:15 you lost me here completely
this is why you READ Faust itself, and not just the wiki page.
The golden apple is also in Greek mythology. It is refered to as the Apple of chaos and is created by Eris, the Goddess of Chaos, and it starts a HUGE war.
Also, u should probably see Bijuu Mike's theory on this. It's very interesting, actually. Kinda blew my mind a little.
Rory Mercury at the first theory I tweeted to MatPat about people stealing wives and golden apples being so similar to Troy's war (sorry if that's the wrong name- I'm italian)
thats false. the golden apple was created by nemesis. long story short: it started the trojan war
no one but me Nemesis is another name for Eris or a daughter of her if I'm correct
It could also be a reference to the apples of hesperides that were featured in the eleventh labour of Heracles.
