In the early stages of walking with a dog (much bigger than yours) he suddenly pulled me to 5 o'clock while I was on the affected leg, and unaffected just before contact with the ground. I managed to squat down and turn sideways so I knelt on the grass. So the dog trained me well because I need to be able to react suddenly, usually with a step. Have a nice week.
I had a stroke in 2018 and I’ve been seeing your videos since last year. And you have taught me things and advised me of Botox different things that I had no idea of And I have been going to physical therapy and occupational therapy since I had my stroke and I still go twice a week now! Thank you for your videos you have no idea how much they help! God bless you.
Hi Doctor Tobias, I just wanted to tell you and the stroke survivors that I started doing a great exercise which is using a weighted hula hoop. Hula hooping is helping so much to perfect my balance. I couldn’t do it first , but kept trying, and now I am able to do it much better. It’s interesting that this activity helped to wake up my left side even more. I would like to definitely recommend it to stroke survivors who are a little further down the road to recovery.
Oh I am so glad you did this video Dr. Tobias. This is a situation that I have not ever thought of and certainly never practiced. This is going to be quite a challenge and absolutely love new challenges. My caregiver will help me with these exercises. Thank you so much! Have a great week.
Thank you so much for your explanations on a plain language that we who are not healthy workers can understand. I have sca3. I was diagnosed in 2011. Your videos are true help for me. Thank you so much.
Thank you for helpful videos and explanations of the how and why and ways to retrain the brain-body connection. You are so knowledgeable. I’m so grateful for you and your channel.
My left side was compressed from a cervical herniated disc in my neck, im on the 4week mark in recovery and im doing the step over exercises now, my walking improved from wheelchair to walker to nothing, my left hand moves now and i could touch my face now, before it was just my index finger so dont give up, i still have tingling and numbness but i got use to it
Great content! My wife has MS and we have incorporated many of you videos and we believe her balance has improved. Just a thought...Is there a video that could be done explaining how to land if in fact you do fall to possibly reduce chance of injury?
Great video. I will try some of these exercises this week. Thankfully, my balance has been pretty good in spite of a severe stroke, but there’s certainly room for improvement. And I imagine some of these higher level exercises will be quite challenging! I had a near fall on a (pretty difficult) hike this past week. The hardest part was getting over some fallen trees. At one point, I was getting over a tree and my strong foot got caught in a vine. I was able to catch myself, even used my weak hand/arm to stabilize myself. I was happy I caught myself, but frustrated I didn’t see the vine. 😅
Thanks for sharing this Randy! Your situation with the "near fall" is very similar to the one that the person described to me in the video. :) She also has pretty good balance so it was surprising to her when she lost her balance doing something that doesn't seem difficult :) Gotta plan for the unexpected :) But glad you didn't fall! Have a great week!
I have suffered from brain stroke on left side hemiplegia After one year is able to do all activities but have following challanges need to address 1. Left knee is weak. 2. When in standing position have issues with eye's focous. As they get tired. 3. Working Stamina have improved but still have ways to go.
Excellent stuff. I've been working on my balance, but just with single leg stances. Should I continue with these before graduating to stepping out/back/front on each leg, or go right to stepping on blocks? Thanks much for your support! Toney
Ankle strategy, Hip strategy, Stepping strategy. This video will focus on stepping strategy. 12:44, Brain cannot percieve fast enough where your feet are. (recent brain injury). Brain doesn’t know where your body is. Brain Panics. Body stiffens. Weak leg moves in front to strong side. 13:40 Strong leg moves in front. 13:40 Practice legs crossed. Practice uncrossing the legs. Bend your knee and step backward. Step back with strong leg. Shift all your weight to weak leg. Step and cross your legs down a step. 14:10 Step down across and back. 15 Next use a board that teeters 16 Use a wall Next add a resistant band to it. Now add a step to it. 18
Thanks for taking the time to do this! I am currently looking for someone who can do this for all my videos and turn it into a blog post. If you are interested please email questions@rehab-hq.com and put "YT Writer" in the subject :)
Hi im Asif from uk I just love ur videos very helpful I do these exercises standing up that u just showed but each time I move my left effected leg my front toe fingers keeps curving in even wen I walk too?
Hi Asif! Thanks for watching and for sharing! This is a very common problem. I have a video about toe curling. You can search "rehab hq and toe curling" to get my tips on this issue!
Wow! This is exactly what I need to work on. Thanks so much for covering this topic. These are great exercises. I can well identify with going around the house with fingertips on whatever steady object I can find. My physical therapist once asked me to do a "karaoke" walk (legs crossing alternating). It was a mess. I have been working on exercises for ankle balance muscles, but understanding the need for a step correction and practicing those exercises is a breakthrough. I am tempted now to purchase a wobble board and challenge myself. Thanks again. Exactly what I need at this point.
Hi Douglas! Thanks for sharing your story and your progress! A carioca step is quite advanced :) Glad your PT knew what was good for you 😊. If you purchase a wobble board make sure you have it on carpet or something where it will have a little traction. Stepping off of the board can cause it to slip.
My problem is, I don’t know where my center of mass is and my brain can’t react quick enough to get my balance. I think if I had more feeling in my leg it would help
I thought maybe I was advanced until I saw this video 🤣 I will try these beginning ones … My mind goes to panic mode anytime I’m out of my exercise room
Great to see you this week Franny! I am excited for you to give these a try. Hopefully it will make you feel more confident venturing out of your workout room :)
Dr. Tobias: I’m a long-time subscriber who finds your videos incredibly helpful. In fact, they recently helped me complete a 5K. That said, and I know it’s a quibble, but is there a way to change the spelling of “scenario” in this video? It’s misspelled. Thank you again!
Good evening, The series of exercises have been wonderful, but I ask this question. I am overweight so I'm the board doesn't balance without a struggle. Would you suggest I lose the added weight to accomplish the board being balanced?
Hi Dr.Tara Tobias.i have a question I hope you can answer me please🙏I sleep on sided only,is it the reason why my half body affected is so heavy?Thank you Doc Tara😘♥️♥️♥️
Believe, believe in recovery, it will come, it takes years, recovery can be done decades after the event. My recommendation is to put a dumbbell on the arm and leg in order to get a stretch. Make circular movements of the hands, legs, head. Gentle circular movements in all positions standing, sitting, lying down. Transfer weight to the injured leg, climb stairs with the injured leg. Sleep on a hard surface. Good luck with God's help.
ive been in recovery for over 2 yrs still limping how do advance to walking somewhat normal my neck vein is totally clotted and still unable to use left arm or hand
Hi Scott! Thanks for watching and for sharing your story! It is not uncommon for someone to have an occluded/clotted neck vein after a stroke. That does not mean you can't still make meaning improvements in your movement. As far as walking, I have done a series on walking progression that I think might be beneficial. Here is a playlist to check out ruclips.net/p/PL6OzQQ8F1uHAYsBzqvGLkE8wUrCrUwyvK. As far as the hand and wrist, keep working on it! You got this!
Thanks for watching and for your question! You can search "rehab hq and return to running" I have a video on some fundamental movements that are necessary before someone should start to consider running. :) I hope it helps!
this is an excellent question! Maybe start with this video ruclips.net/video/kz8d7gCuirQ/видео.html If these exercises are to easy, go to the description and select the next video in this series. I hope it helps! Also, this video might be helpful ruclips.net/video/_Mr0PKPN5f8/видео.html
.... quickly - automatically ... is not something that I can do ... my brain just dosen't seem to send the correct movement needed to remain balanced. "step strategies" may help - practice!!!
Dr Tara your whole videos are always excellent for stroke patients world wide .God bless you
