I’m not sure how to calculate the CPU usage to make it relevant to you. It takes a chunk of CPU (maybe 2-5%) but nothing that prevents me from using it.
Csound is one option. Almost unlimited possibilities if you do some work but it's a pretty deep dive. You can even create your own VST plugins & there are many free ones available.

In my experience, if you’re ever torn between a Melda plugin versus something else, you’ll almost always get more out of the Melda plugin

ableton has a vocoder u can do some neat stuff with
