What he said wasnt racist its the truth. My Arabic teacher told us this on the 1st day of class: "It is very important to speak another language. In the rest of the world, the common saying goes... If you speak 3 languages, you're trilingual. If you speak 2 languages, you're bilingual. If you speak 1 language.... you're American." We all laughed, but it's so true! It hurts my heart to this day remembering how my classmates were treated. I think Americans in general can do better at embracing other cultures. I'm Guyanese by the way. Before anyone comes for me...I know Africa is a continent and not a country:)
My parents are from Guyana. When I dealt with racism in middle school, I just prayed for them so that they would finally have a mind of their own rather than listen to what their racist grandparents or friends told them. It's just ignorance and a weak mind. People just need to look at facts and the fact is, just because their ancestors came here before mine, doesn't make them any more superior than mine. They just want money, power and the feeling of superiority. But what they really need is to get educated.
Tom: "They need to work harder and learn to speak our language and get involved in the community" Reality: This nation was built by immigrants, who have the intellectual capacity to speak multiple languages, and are still looked down upon and discriminated against
My parents always told me to speak Spanish at home. They knew that outside my home I will need to know English to survive like Adrienne said. Now I pass that on to my children. He made it seem like we are not teaching our kids English.
Then why Don't they? We wouldn't be having this discussion if they did. And, that still doesn't account for their families who Refuse to learn English. Go to any country where there is a common language, and you will Not hear radio or television in multiple languages. And, you will Not have important functions translated into multiple languages. I've been to many, only "tourist" areas do this. If the US being a "Melting Pot" is the reason for the necessity of multiple languages; why don't we "Press 3 for French/German/Afrikaans"? The reason is that we have so many Hispanic "immigrants" that lawmakers chose this route instead of Requiring them to speak English.

I think it’s cause people think blacks r delusional when it comes to racism until it happens to them. They were like....told y’all white folk don’t like y’all either
I WAS RASIED TO THINK THE WAY TOM BROKAW WAS SPEAKING IN THAT CLIP. My father always told me, if I brought home a black boy as my boyfriend, I would be disowned. I now have a daughter and a son on the way, he's due in late March. They are both white, but the different between them and myself as a child is, I CELEBRATE OTHERS DIFFERENCES. I was not allowed to have black dolls, my daughter has multiple. I was not allowed to play with black kids, I do not teach my child what black skin even is. I want my children to be color blind when it comes to others exterior and love people for who they are INSIDE AND OUT without judgment or fear. I'm with A, I'm glad he said what he said, because that kind of talk is exactly whats been going on behind closed doors for decades... It's up to us and the future generations to change all of that and let that racism die with them. ✊
"I do not teach my child what black skin is...colorblind"??? Wow ... Your child is not stupid. And unless they've been diagnosed with a medical issue, they aren't colorblind. If you teach your child that there are various fruits, vegetables or flowers... you should be ecstatic to teach them that people come in the same wonderful variety. The fact that you typed those words and couldn't see what I've said for yourself might reveal an area of education your father unfortunately deprived you of
@@MPPG663 I used it as a figure of speech as in, I don't want my daughter judging other children or people in general just because there is some sort of stigma against their skin color. There’s nothing wrong with them speaking other languages. If I moved to another country permanently I WOULD try to become fluent in their language since I chose to live there and overall it would be easier to get around. Hummm he’s right though...anyone that moves to the United States needs to learn English because that’s the language we speak here. There’s nothing wrong or offensive about that.
c cc I think people are getting offended because they think it means they aren’t allowed to be here speaking Spanish or French or any other language in that case without it being unacceptable to people like Tom brokaw.... yea learning English is necessary but everyone should be able to speak their native language, without having to hush up because others around them aren’t speaking so, it’s not fair to feel like we can’t be us when other people don’t know the language we speak. Some people in America never have spoken English in their lives because they were able to find their community of Spanish speaking folk, so no in that case they never needed to learn English. So you defending this isn’t really valid.
It wont Because when it comes to black issues they're trying to reverse it and say it isn't entirely about color and they keep trying to out talk people but the moment it's another race everybody sympathize with them that's crazy and they not being sensitive now racism still exists when it affects them let the letters bla even slip out now every body dumb and don't know about racism and colorism

The whole point is Majority will always have a upper point. My agreeing with you is in this sence that.. whoever you are you shouldn't frown upon people who are different from you.
@Vee A It's not "BOTH sides" when one side has all the systematic POWER and history of oppression which plays out interpersonally and structurally in our everyday lives through politics, media conditioning, and corporations. Some random Latinx people judging you in the streets of Miami doesn't affect you like the white people who call the cops on you, discriminate you from moving up at your workplace, because they don't like "those people". You have to look at it from a societal and cultural standpoint, not just random interpersonal interactions.
I'm Lebanese, so my native tongue is arabic. However, in professionnal settings, English and French are much more needed and used so I'm really proud that in my country we embrace and celebrate the diversity of the languages we speak. It saddens me that racism still exists, especially in the USA because it IS a melting pot!
More of a tossed salad than a melting pot. White people made sure they're the greens and the people of color are the seasonings to spice up THEIR lives.
I’m trilingual but I’m still going to know the language of the country I’m in, and I’m going to teach my children. No one is telling these Hispanic immigrants to stop speaking Spanish. People are saying to learn English as well to better be served and to better serve and thrive your community. If I move to China, I’m going to start learning Mandarin before I even get there so that I’m better assimilated and also just out of respect for the country that is allowing me to live there. Btw, there’s no official language of the United States but English is overwhelmingly the main language used throughout the workforce and schools. Respect to all!
NewLife51 yes, I said my last comment because I know some idiot would say that “English isn’t the official language, so why should we have to learn it?”. Everyone should learn the language of the country they live in.
My whole life I thought English was the official language in the US. I love that people know different languages and celebrate their culture but in reality it gets difficult if you cannot talk to the police or go to the city hall without a translator. I am talking from experience, I was my mother’s translator and still am so I had to go everywhere with her. I had to translate every letter and write letters and emails and I had to make phone calls all the times. This gets exhausting after a while. Imagine doing that when you are as young as seven. I understand that you don’t have to be fluent but learn enough so you don’t struggle when communicating with others. Also native speakers should be more understanding. They are so quick to judge people who don’t speak English fluently without seeing the effort.
I think that's just her face, because it's like that most times..it was a bit stankier here tho. However, I think a lot of things were going through her mind. Perhaps just being a black woman, a woman of American slave ancestry, hearing about racist outbursts from white people being just so commonplace, that after a while your face just falls in the space of disgust.

I do think when you move to a country that has a dominant language, it is important to speak it to co-exist. I'm not talking about to be a advanced speaker but just know some really basics things. But I would never understand why Americans look down on bilingualism/multilingualism. I think it such a beautiful thing to know a different language. I am currently trying to learn to speak 6, and it is amazing the doors you can open with that.
you dont have to "move" from anywhere. there are puerto ricans who are all americans and dont speak english and generations of mexican families that had their land stolen and became forced to become part of the united states who don't either. there are ethnic enclaves throughout and if you live and work in your barrio then you dont. we have no national language.
@@whatever6796 I never said America has an official language. But English is still the most spoken language in america. I know the history with Mexico and america. I live in NYC and I know there are a great number of Puerto Ricans and Dominicans in certain neighborhoods, but the ones who don't know any English are more vulnerable to certain benefits and improper healthcare because the communication is not there.
Where has being bilingual and multilingual been looked bad upon here. I think the problem he had was that they weren’t learning English to become bilingual in the first place.

Desiree Diaz how was that racist
What he said wasnt racist its the truth. You go to a different country other than the one your native to you should learn the language of that said country and broaden your horizons and get to know different people than your use to. As minorities we tend to segregate ourselves to people who look and talk like us. The only way to get people to stop being racist is to go out and meet different people go out and experience something new something different. We can all learn from one another if we stop being complacent.

My Arabic teacher told us this on the 1st day of class:
"It is very important to speak another language. In the rest of the world, the common saying goes...
If you speak 3 languages, you're trilingual.
If you speak 2 languages, you're bilingual.
If you speak 1 language.... you're American."
We all laughed, but it's so true! Americans who so heavily emphasize this need to EXCLUSIVELY speak English are embarrassing. I hope these newer generations learn to be more tolerant and more accepting of diversity...
reannakat wow is that so because I don’t know a lot of Australians or English or Canadians with the exception of the ones from Montreal, who speak several languages, we don’t have to speak several languages this is America you should speak English if you want to live here... everybody’s welcome but you should Acquiesce unto the American culture and not Expect Americans to Acquiesce unto you.....
@@Eli-kq7qt except you dont. there are communities (barrios/ethnic enclaves) throughout this country where people speak the language they know and continue being active in the culture they left behind and live lives as spanish-speaking americans. we have an issue though since youre telling people that have been colonized and re-colonized (natives, the mexicans in the west, and puerto rico) to speak a language being forced on them. leave other poc who dont speak english alone because they know what theyre doing and they know thy can work, have careers and move along just fine with the little english they know. thank you though for your perpetuation of white oppression in this country!
Hahahah I loooove that!! 😂 it’s true. I work with a lot of Europeans that have had to relocate to the US for work and in their culture, they speak 2-3 languages: either English, German, Italian, French, etc.. they think it’s WEIRD that Americans only speak in English and I agree!!
I’m here for multi-lingual people!!
Danny actually I’m not white and I certainly don’t agree with racism but you can’t go to Denmark, Africa, England or Mexico and expect the people to adapt unto you because your from a different country.... most decent people have no problem with people celebrating the culture but if you call this country a melting pot that means that we all have to melt a little. When you go to another country you have to on some level blend in with that country if your going to stay there instead of thinking that country should blend in with you

It's just ignorance and a weak mind. People just need to look at facts and the fact is, just because their ancestors came here before mine, doesn't make them any more superior than mine. My parents always told me to speak Spanish at home. They knew that outside my home I will need to know English to survive like Adrienne said. Now I pass that on to my children. He made it seem like we are not teaching our kids English.
There are many that won't even allow their kids to speak English, so don't act like there isn't a problem.

I was not allowed to have black dolls, my daughter has multiple. I was not allowed to play with black kids, I do not teach my child what black skin even is. I want my children to be color blind when it comes to others exterior and love people for who they are INSIDE AND OUT without judgment or fear. Your child is not stupid. And unless they've been diagnosed with a medical issue, they aren't colorblind.
If you teach your child that there are various fruits, vegetables or flowers... you should be ecstatic to teach them that people come in the same wonderful variety.

c cc I think people are getting offended because they think it means they aren’t allowed to be here speaking Spanish or French or any other language in that case without it being unacceptable to people like Tom brokaw.... yea learning English is necessary but everyone should be able to speak their native language, without having to hush up because others around them aren’t speaking so, it’s not fair to feel like we can’t be us when other people don’t know the language we speak. Some people in America never have spoken English in their lives because they were able to find their community of Spanish speaking folk, so no in that case they never needed to learn English. The whole point is Majority will always have a upper point. My agreeing with you is in this sence that.. whoever you are you shouldn't frown upon people who are different from you.
That can definitely be true in close communities.
NewLife51 😊🇺🇸

I live in NYC and I know there are a great number of Puerto Ricans and Dominicans in certain neighborhoods, but the ones who don't know any English are more vulnerable to certain benefits and improper healthcare because the communication is not there.
