    What is the MOST VALUBLE lesson you learned this year about your photography? Or just in general, let me know in the comments and thanks so much for the support!

    • @jeremybuscay
      @jeremybuscay 3 года назад

      I don't know if I can say that I have already learned it, but this year my biggest focus has been working on my composition. Your videos as well as a few of the other photographers that I subscribe to on here have really helped me to see that I had been over complicating things. By focusing on the technical aspects of photography, I was missing the big picture LITERALLY.
      Thanks for the work you do and I can't wait to see what this year brings.

      During the 2 lockdowns we had, I discovered macrophotography and that I was really interested in cloud photography. The lesson : I should stop complaining and do with what I have as much as possible. Wish you all the best for 2021.

    When I heard you say you didn't realize how much you traveled and 2020 gave you a chance to explore San Francisco more, your words really hit my heart. About 10 years ago, I was traveling in Japan photographing the Nachi waterfall. Then, when I went into a local restaurant for lunch and saw these beautiful photographs by local artists hanging on the walls, I had an epiphany. I would never be able to take those photos unless I live there too. There's a reason why Ansel Adam's Yosemite is so intriguing because he lives there all his life. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy traveling and photography but at that moment, it occurred to me that I should shoot locally more because I'll be able to discover it more, have more chances to catch great light because I'm familiar with the place. By the way, I live in Fremont and I'm happy to know that there's a fellow photographer living in the Bay Area. Let's see if our path crosses some day.

      Agreed... That is the sad part of it all... we all live near very interesting part of the world but we never ever go and see those and instead, travel the world over to see other parts, discounting the local beauty...

    A couple years ago we bought a camper and took a couple long distance trips from Michigan to the Rockies and further west. The camper was perfect in 2020 during the pandemic. We basically had our home on wheels and only stopped for gas. Social distancing wasn't an issue in the woods, well most of the time. I took my kids to some of my favorite places in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and also visited some places I hadn't seen before in the northern lower peninsula. I learned there are still alot of cool, beautiful places near home that I still need to explore. Keep Wandering!

    Thanks for your video, Michael. I like the points that you made on lessons learned in 2020. I had 3 workshops canceled and postponed to 2021 and turned to macro photography with flowers, since we stayed home a lot. I was tempted to purchase one of those jumping spiders for the macro work, but decided that landscape photography was my favorite “style” of photography and the spider would not get the attention it deserved after the pandemic is over! I look forward to your videos and photos in 2021.

My favorite image is of the view looking north of Mt. Tam and the fog poring over Daly City/SF with the inner Bay lit up. 2nd up is the lone tree with the swirling fog on the Mill Valley ridge. You have a fantastic cinematic vision so keep up the time lapses, photos and vlogs, great work! Happy 2021! Veazie

    Perhaps the joy of creating beautiful images gets tempered by the pressure of creating content? As for my lessons, you can never seem to plan enough for going to an epic location. You plan the time of year for having the right light, the right color in the landscape, using TPE to know right where you want to be for when the sun is low in the sky...and then things beyond your control dictate plan “c”, for which you have no plan C, and you just make the best of what you are given. Sometimes, it works out and you walk away with that killer shot. Sometimes, you just walk away frustrated without ever getting your gear out of the bag...and maybe next time.

    Hi Michael,
    Great to see some of those photos again. I was wondering, you often talk about telephoto lens and you usually relate to the 100-400mm. Do you think 400mm brings you to a nice ideal range (cropping always being an option of course) or do you also own lenses that go further like a 600mm or 800mm ? Thanks

    • @MichaelShainblum
      @MichaelShainblum  3 года назад +1

      Thanks so much. I think in almost every case 400 has been more then enough range. (and a bit of crop as needed in some cases) I almost find 100 a bit too close, for the wide end of the lens. I almost wish it was 70. But during those times when I need to go a little wider I will do a panorama. I also switch it out for the 70-200 on shoots where I know there are not going to be many telephoto compositions. I have used 500mm and 800mm for a few specialty jobs, but I just rented the lenses for those gigs.

    Question for you Michael... I have a Canon 60D and want to upgrade. I only have 1 lens for it. Should I prioritize buying new lenses and upgrade the body later or upgrade the body first since I don't have a whole kit to sell if I move away from Canon?

    • @MichaelShainblum
      @MichaelShainblum  3 года назад

      They there Alex, I think it depends a little on what you are shooting and the technical challenges. But in most cases I would say investing in some good lenses is better then upgrading the camera body. If you do decide to move away from Canon soon, then certainly investing in a bunch of Canon glass would not be wise. In that case I would get a body from another manufacturer and grab a few new lenses as needed from them.

    • @ZeLoShady
      @ZeLoShady 3 года назад

      @@MichaelShainblum That is what I was thinking.. now I just need to decide if the R5 is worth saving for or going with the a7riv to save a little money. Both will work fine but in my head the Canon would be best.
