As a lume snob, please keep these lume wars going. But missing a watch with C3X1 as it would, I dare say, keep up and maybe beat the Rolie. At least my Portus Cale does keep up with my Submariner, no issue.
Great review. As you mentioned, my Orient Mako USA ll has an impressive lume performance, but I suspect it probably comparable to the SKX. Love the lume war concept.
I own a Rolex, a Breitling and Seiko but none of this 3 has the best lume. This goes to my BALL Engineer! Where the others fail the BALL still "shines"...Constant light up to 20 years in every situation...
Thanks Jody, nice choice of watches. As a kid 'glow in the dark' and 'water resist' where the best things to get as a Chrissy present. As an adult, nothing has changed! I still look for lume and +200m. Maybe a citizen NY0040-09W to add to the mix.
Love this episode. Maybe my favorite of all time. I do have a suggestion, look into the Orient XL Luminous Dial. I have one and it's lume is unreal. I don't know how it compares as far as how long compared to some of these but that lume dial in contrast to the non lume indicies with what ends up being a negative lume if you could call it that, invokes a bit of awe. You being a lume junkie really needs to have one in your collection. Once again, great video!
Hearing that intro music makes me wanna jump in my orange flight suit, grab my helmet and R2-unit to run out on the flightdeck to my X-Wing. I must be as bonkers as a Scot sunbathing some watches in the garden :-) Nice one Jody. Cheers!
I have a Deep Blue ProTac 1000, Seiko Jade Monster and a Seiko SARB 017 (among others). The Monster and the DB have tons of Lume and go most, if not all of the night. The real surprise is the Alpinist!!. Only pips on the hour markers but i can still read it in the middle of the night. Love the Lume Wars !! Keep 'em coming Jody :)
Just caught up with this review as I'm in the market for a traditional type B pilot watch and wanted to know how the different lumes performed. At my end of the market (entry) I'm looking at Tisell and Laco. The Tisell has BG9W and he Laco (and Stowa for that matter) has C3. Your review was quite illuminating! What I got from your test was that two aspects that need to be understood (i) the type of lume and (ii) the application. It seems as though most of the Lumes perform comparably if applied well so I would take care at the entry level of the market to try and understand how well the lume was applied regardless of what type of lume it was. Would that be a fair summary?
You forgot the Helm Vanuatu or isn't it in your collection anymore? With the black bezel on, it would eat most of these watches for breakfast in the lume department.
One thing your lume war did very well and clearly, was to show that you don't have to spend thousands to get satisfying quality. Naturally, there's more involved than just lume, but... Thumbs up.
Yes mate, the Khuraburi is a notable omission. I sold mine. Then bought another. Then sold that one! They are releasing a new 40mm watch called the Komodo. I'd imagine it will have spectacular lume. You can expect to see it in Lume Wars: Episode 2. Cheers!
Just One More Watch great will look out for that will look at the site for the new one and look forward to the review too i’m sure that will appear soon
Any chance that you could get your hands on a San Martin pilot's watch? I've been interested in the watch for a while, but I cant find many reviews for this watch. For around $170 they come with a bronze case, a sapphire crystal, c3 lume, and an nh35 movement. They also sell a $200 dive watch with a bronze case that looks like a Seiko tuna.
Well, that was fun. I still, when I go to bed at night, will juice up my Zelos Mako, turn off the lights and enjoy the glow. My dog's not so excited, but I like it.
Thanks for the great vid! Lume really is an important part of watch evaluation. Like you, I wear a watch 24/7, so the lume really affects my "relationship" with the wath as well! I like the lume on my Seikos, really not bad at all, especially at the price point. Love your Zelos, btw...wow!
Hey there! Awesome video 👍 I wish the Phoibos octopus logo had lume! Haha Quick question... In this video, what watch did you have in the bottom right of your four-watch winder on the shelf next to you? Is that an Orient Bambino?
Why would you not expect good lume on an aviation watch? The origin of these is you're flying along in the dark, navigating by compass and timer to figure out where you are. No lume on your aviation watch in WWII means you drop your bombs on an empty field.
I have only one watch in my collection that I put on *before* going to bed each night. The brand isn't important (Marathon) but what makes it night-worthy is Tritium. It's bright, it's fantastic, it's not only consistent throughout the night, but for years. I'd love it Jody if you'd do a side by side comparison of traditional lume vs tritium. Not a 15 min comparison, but an hour after hour comparison. I think that's what most people miss when reviewers pop up a 10 second lume shot of a tritium dial. Initially it appears faint, but after 20 minutes when your eyes adjust to the dark and when traditional lume starts to fade, tritium settles in for the long haul!
I also have a tritium watch (carnival brand w/ rhonda quartz mvmnt) that isn't much to look at in the daytime but the brightness and the clarity of the hands and markers at night is brilliant. And the darker it gets, the brighter the appearance.
@@JustOneMoreWatch I've been wondering, since you have both the Eagle Ray and the PY007, could you compare both since there is a 3 layers of lume difference? I'm curious as to see how much difference 3 layers does. Also, as you mentioned, the lume on the bezel for the PY007 is poorly applied. Does it disturb you?
Lume in hands of Rolex watch is bit disapointment. I think that hands, 12 marker and bezel pip should have brighter and longer lasting lume than other parts. And Phoibos really need that bezel pip. Other lume in bezel is not that important. With that pip Phoibos would be better than Rolex.
Wonderfull video. I have two Steinhart watches with very good Superluminova (Ocean One Vintage and Ocean GMT) and also a Chris Benz Deep 500, which is super bright at night for many hours.
Great concept - most lume shots are pointless, not showing lume duration. That said, Indiglow ftw. Timex should put it into a line of mechanical watches. It would be worth changing batteries every decade or so for that.
I buy mechanical watches over other watches for a reason, and one of them is because of they are completely mechanical without technology. I don't want indiglo in an automatic.
best lume on watches ive owned is the I w c aqautimer 376706 cousteu . it was brilliant. ive had 11 rolex s over the years. still got just 4 now. sea dweller 43 red sub 116618 d date 41 Daytona 116505. wished never flipped the I w c. I know 7750 eta but lume case comfort to wear brilliant.
really enjoyable as always. just catching up to this one after episode 2... Zelos does some crazy cool lume. If you have the chance I'd love to see how a Lum Tec compares to some of the known Lume kings out there.
Wow! What a great idea for a video. What a great experiment. Edit: Just wanted to point out that the Rolex has a 3900m water resistance... For when you go diving in the Marianas Trench. 😁
Now, admittedly as I thunder into my mid 50s my eyes are certainy not what they used to be, but the Phoibos' hands were definitely lookng better than the Rolex's in this video. Also, I'd have to say, anyone relying on the luminous paint on a watch dial to tell you the time at 4 in the morning, they might want to consider the merits of a cheap alarm clock with a light built in to it. :-D
I like the way you did it! Good job! Like you I wear a lumped watch to bed. Usually pul out the Evant bronze or Omega Dynamic or Bertucci. Those 3 glow all night long and all of them look really sweet in the night. I get a special smile from the Dynamic 3 with it's script numerals all lit up and reflecting off the inner rehaut of the watch. ) Keep it going! i wanna see the Evant Tropic diver in here.
So what I got out of this, is that tritium is the way to go (Luminox) or a actual backlight like victorianox night vision If you're on somewhat of a budget and want a analog watch. Of course digital is the only way to go If you want to pay under $100.
Jody...keep the lume wars coming...!!! I recently lumed a watch that was great except it had NO lume! If i sat inside all day and didnt go out at dark ok.. but seriously, who does that?? IM a big Zelos fan and hope to get on next month... I saw an amazing one coming up that looked great with a bronze case Joe
Great video. If the lume fades in 15 minutes, how is it going to last 4-8 hours? How long do you have to charge them in the sun to get 4 hours, for example, on the Phoibos? By the way, I always look forward to your videos :-)
The issue is the relative brightness of the watches over time. With that in mind, testing for 15 minutes doesn't really answer the question. Better, given camera limitations, would be to test after a fixed number of hours but use a time exposure to compare brightnesses.
Hi Jody, just a small question, my financial manager, love of my life, likes watches with good lume, but no one seems to do comparisons with the best ladies watches? I last bought a Olevs for her, as it was the best bargain watch that had some of the style she liked, and has proven to be, as she says, good enough, but not quite as good as the $350 Tissot Quartz that recently went to watch heaven. So, any chance of a ladies watch comparo??
Hi, I would like to see a Helm aviator style watch. Not too loud but substantial presence in it's build. A statement look not flash. Aston Martin not Lamborghini.
Could have taken perfectly good photos of the lume after 2/4/6/8 hours by using bulb or manual mode with a standard exposure length. Use lowest possible ISO setting to decrease noise. This was an opportunity to sharpen your astrophotography skills.
What a bright idea! Brilliant! A very enlightening head-to-head comparison, indeed. You certainly shed some light on a hitherto dark corner of the watch industry. This comparo eclipses many of RUclips’s brightest stars. You are a horological Diogenes, carrying your lamp, searching for an honest watch. I could continue, but my verbal energy wanes, alas.
+1 on continuing lume wars. As a horological bottom feeder, I'm constantly disappointed by the lume I get at my price range. My best performers are my Seiko Alpinist (far and away the costliest watch I own) and my humble Seiko SNK805. But neither comes close to lasting through the night. Which brings me to what many will doubtless consider sacrilege: the Indiglo lighting technology on my Timex Weekender chronograph. Yes, its cold electric glow lacks horological soul. And it does require user engagement to activate. But it's an absurdly affordable watch illumination solution that allows me to tell the time in bed right up through those early AM hours immediately before sunrise. My kingdom for all night readability with the soul of real lume and the low cost of Indiglo! And as long as I'm wishing for the impossible: can we just say the Star Wars prequels never happened?
Damn ... watches ...
Once you start there's no end.
Would be nice to see a Citizen Promaster in the next LUME WAR :)
I'd like to see a lume war with microbrands like helm, armida, helios, Christopher ward, and borealis
The Armida would blow them all away
As a lume snob, please keep these lume wars going. But missing a watch with C3X1 as it would, I dare say, keep up and maybe beat the Rolie. At least my Portus Cale does keep up with my Submariner, no issue.
Thanks for the "Illuminating" video Jody! 👍
I'd be interested to see how the Vostok Komandirskie K39's "Trigalight" lum compares to these.
Great review. As you mentioned, my Orient Mako USA ll has an impressive lume performance, but I suspect it probably comparable to the SKX. Love the lume war concept.
"But I suspect". It's a not a bad thing if it's comparable to the SKX...
I own a Rolex, a Breitling and Seiko but none of this 3 has the best lume. This goes to my BALL Engineer! Where the others fail the BALL still "shines"...Constant light up to 20 years in every situation...

@@dimitriskekos sure they do. and as said: when all others fail a Ball still shines.... Unbeatable!

My favorite for crazy amount of lume is the Nomos Glashutte Autobahn. They put the stuff on with a paint roller, it'll light up a room.
Without watching this, I back the SEIKO SKX....
And as we discussed previously Jody, you need a UV emitting torch.
I picked one up after you mentioned it. ;) Definitely helps!
Why? Who lights a watch with torch before going to bed or in to the water?? Very impressed with rolex, they take no compromise what so ever...
I do, I keep a UV light on the nightstand for that. I thought everybody did?
Loved the video. Would love to see how the lume would look after a few hours.
Very well done comparison... Would like to see the difference between a Seiko PADI turtle and SKX as the turtle has applied deep filled hour markers..
Great video, best lume out of all my watches is my Ball firemans racer, its a torch!!
wow, I can use them in the light house I'm building at Montauk Point. lol
Nicely done. Keep it coming. 👍👍
Just got the latest Zelos hammerhead. I can see it glowing in my watch box well into the night just from picking up the light in my living room.

Hi,
Weird that the SKX didn't lasted as I expected. I have a SRP777 and this guy's lume last all night! It's amazing.
I have a contender in the blue lume category. The Citizen GN-4W-S is amazingly bright and lasts well into the night beyond my Seikos.
Well, that was fun. I still, when I go to bed at night, will juice up my Zelos Mako, turn off the lights and enjoy the glow. My dog's not so excited, but I like it.

I am exactly the same a watch has to have lume or its a no go for me. My Seiko SNXS has fantastic lume for such a great value watch.

Savvy Life Strategies if I had to guess they all are much brighter than the camera makes them look after the 15 minutes
Your eyes become adjusted to the dark - hence why you can still see lume after 4-8 hours. Something to do with the cones and rods in your eye.
Makes sense :-)
The issue is the relative brightness of the watches over time. With that in mind, testing for 15 minutes doesn't really answer the question.
Better, given camera limitations, would be to test after a fixed number of hours but use a time exposure to compare brightnesses.
