    I'm 70 and just getting into crawling. Don't be afraid to repeat these basic learning vids in the future. Us newbie's need the basics more than the advanced stuff. I have been fighting with the Vanquish bead lock wheels and tires I just got for my trail honcho for hours. Everything looks and feels right during assembly but the tires have this uneven wobble side to side. The first ring is a peace of cake but the second ring and fighting the foam is just driving these old eyes and hands crazy. Thanks again Sir! There learning curve is painful but so satisfying when you finally get it right!

      The wobble side to side is pretty common in these trucks. Don’t stress on that. Once you’re running it, it’s not noticeable.

    dual stage foams makes it super easy to mount beadlocks. normal crappy foams are usually too big and make it a pain in the ass.

    I Have a deadbolt and I wanted a set of beadlocks to air fill my tires due to stock set being glued stock.But didn't wanna wait So I put stock rims & tires in freezer for 5 min to slightly decrease temp and then hot glued the vent holes in the back of rim. Colder the air in the tires when u glue the more air pressure tires will have when they return to room temp. Note when u run air filled tires in cold weather the tires will return to low pressure look and performance.🇺🇸 I watched your budget build from day one and was one of the main reasons I got a deadbolt, thanks for the tips and info keep em coming

    I never knew about the bake-off method! Pretty cool. I was one to hate venting the tires but I just started doing it with the deuces wild foams and it conforms nicely. Very good video! New guys and experienced guys will appreciate this. Good deal on the wheels too!

    Btw totally agree trapped air is too in consistent I like that you said "gimmicks" because the tuning foams get you is amazing. Just to add my .02 reason I run a hole in the tread is to let dirt/ moisture fly out as the centrifugal force pulses out ward as tire spins.

    been venting my tires for years like that in all my race R/Cs... One tip, I use a leather punch and punch two or three small holes as you mentioned, in between the treads. Simply punch the hole prior to mounting. Punching holes in the tires also will all water and debris to escape through centrifugal force, where as a hole in the wheel or sidewall will not. Google leather punch and you should be able to find one for under $10.

    I am going to have to agree with Brian on this one. I actually LOVE to run my trucks with sealed wheels. I like to think it is a lot more realistic. I have yet to try the g-air wheel system but I do just install my tires without foams and then tighten beads. They are still somewhat soft and contour to the rocks. Totally a personal preference though. Love the build!! Also going to be ordering a set of wheels from ssd as well. Keep up the great work!!

      Personal preference for sure, but being a competitor in crawling comps all over the US for many years I'll tell you that you won't see a truck be competitive with that style setup. I am very conscience of scale but if performance is important, then vented is important.

    Harley, have you tried using a leather punch for your tire venting? I haven't tried it with my crawlers but it's all I use for my race tires (1/8th scale off road). Super fast, accurate, and you're guaranteed to have equal sized holes on all your tires.

    Hey there Harley! Loving this series, and I've been wondering what foams your considering for those Trepadors...I've been running mine sealed for a while now, but I am completely sold on running them for performance. Mud, water, rocks, all that fun stuff!

    I just bought SSD 1.9 beadlocks for my TRX4 Sport. When I put both halves they remain separated by almost 10mm and I must exert too much force to get them closer and I am afraid something will break, like the bolts threads.
    In fact I guess the bolts will have to resist that force and I dn´t think it will work. My friends told me that they are compatble, the SSD and the canyon tires. But...

    if you don't like using the scissors to cut that big hole use a very small finishing nail it won't rip out a whole like a drill bit will do, personally I had rather vent the wheel than the tire less likely to get water in there.

    Absolutely untrue. Air wheels work awesome. I rock crawl like a champ with Pitbull rockbeasts on g-made air wheels in summer. And we have wicked wicked rock here :P I can adjust the pressure for whatever. And they seal great too. In the snow I just go with the g-made Bighorns on air because they work good in snow and the tire is fairly stiff so no need for foams either. Not that I don't have countless wheel/tire combos with foams...lol but you shouldn't knock air unless you've used it and also it depends on your build. Heavy or light, where your crawling or if your even crawling. This system wouldn't work good if your driving real fast and UNSCALE and jumping and flipping all over making it look unrealistic like a toy But it is awesome for serious rock crawling.

      I have competed in RC crawling on a national level since 2007. I am well aware of what works for serious rock crawling. No major crawling competition is going to be won with sealed tires. Choosing the proper foam for the weight of your rig is key but sealed tires will not perform to the the same level as a proper tuned tire and foam setup. This has been proven over and over on a national/world level at every large competition. I understand you are happy with it, but going head to head with a properly tune setup you would see the short comings. I understand running sealed in snow because performance is not going to be great anyway and not wanting to release the moisture. However actual rock crawling, it's just an inferior setup.

      Harley Designs You should have said that in the vid then bro ;o) Not everyone does comps. They're silly anyway. Totally out of scale the way they drive them...lol! My set up is just as good if not better then many foams for the slow crawling over real mountain rock. Not the little stuff...lol! We drive em' like their real rigs. I have nothing against foams at all. Like I said, I use a lot of different ones. Just saying that you portrayed air systems as no good and that's not fair ;o) But I'm sure you're not going to give up your opinion cause you're the greatest ;)

      Harley Designs The great thing about this hobby is there are certain opinions and options each person is going to be able to decide on to make it their own and in their own opinion the best. This air/ foamed conversation is just like the difference between driving a ford or a chevy in nascar. You cant tell me that one way is inferior to another on this subject. It really depends more on the terrain you will be running just like opting for tire treads (you dont go rock crawling with drag slicks) Everyone in my area laughs at my sealed, no foams, half flat tires on my SCX10 until I am pulling around them on the trails, so to each their own. I don't know how many of those National Rock Crawling Competitions you have won but surely not any G6's and have obviously not been through a comp course with water crossings. If you did , you would know that the water entering your tire would hinder your balance and will screw up the performance for the rest of your competition. More and more scale comps are adding muddy hazards and water crossings to the course, almost all of them now. Harley, you may be correct with your method of slashing tires on a RC comp rock crawler and just may work best for you on the rocks but the "budget build" this video is on is a trail truck for the beginners, weekend warriors and possibly the occasional scale comper in which your method is nothing more than a suggestion. They could just as easily win that scale comp with sealed tires with or without foams as long as their setup is correct for the course and they can drive it.

    Harley, you are not weighting the wheels at all..? just using foams as your tuning..?

      Correct, I do not like to add any weight to my wheels. It adds rotating mass which is hard on drivelines and you lose responsiveness from the throttle. I like to keep the weight bias forward on the car by getting the components forward and low. I don't like to add excess weight that doesn't do anything else.

    Would you say it's better to have a heavy set of wheels for rock crawling and trail riding as a whole ? Or a light set?

      I do not like heavy wheels, I try to keep my wheels fairly reasonable, if anything I’ll add some disc brake style weights.

    Hey I have a question: I bought the same wheels and after they arrived yesterday, I mounted them and took my scx10 out for a test drive. I had some bad flip-overs at one obstacle. After that I had lost three of the small little screws on the outside of the wheels, two of them at the same wheel. And even before that one obstacle I had already lost one screw. My question now is: Did you have the same problem and what should I do to fix that? Loctite? Hot glue? (Luckily there are some spare screws in the package)
    The Video helped a lot to see exactly how the mounting works and your whole channel helped me out several times making decisions or fixing problems. Thank you for that, greetings from Germany!

      +Dennis Wächter I did not have the same issue but I have heard many that have. Just poor assembly at the factory. Remove all the screws and loctite them all.

    In this video of putting your glued tires in a toaster oven to break them loose if someone has used a little too much glue will this process still work? Awesome video tho

      +Tracy McCarthy I think you will still have a good chance of it working. At this temp the glue loses it bond.

      I would have NEVER thought of putting *plastic* Wheels in a 325° oven!! 😱😱😱 I'll have to try that, as I have two glued Wheels that the tires are nearly egg shaped!

    Hello Harley , follow you from Italy with great interest because I also own a Deadbolt , I would like to ask you how many degrees you set the oven to remove the wheels from the tires and for how long ? I can not wait for the next installment .

      325° F for 20 mins for the first side, then an additional 5 mins for the other side.

    I know I'm a bit late, but I'm workin' me at bit backwards in your videos. When you say 325 Degrees, is that in Fahrenheit or in Celcius? A bit important for me, as I live in Denmark, and here we measure in Celcius.

    I just can’t get SSD 1.9’s to work with my proline 1.9 tsl XL’s no matter how hard I press there’s just no way to get the 2 pieces to touch enough to even get 1 thread of a screw to show on the other side to screw into the hub

    In the pro kit the plastic hubs that come in there what is the size I need for the same size slw hub for both the bigger and smaller plastic hubs I’m using the bigger of the two but it would be nice to know both sizes

      Smaller is right between a 350 and 475 and the larger is closest to 850.

      +fred hernandez I had built 20 or more SCX's before this truck. So it's not that I really learned much on this build. If I was building the same truck today I would do things different just because I would run it in different locations.

      Flash Hobbies nope. A Traxxas slash uses a 2.2/3.0 wheel while this uses a 1.9/1.9 size wheel. Also, the Traxxas slash has a weird front/rear wheel offset.

      Stock trx4 wheels fit my sc10 2wd which is basically the same thing as a slash so I don't see why not might be a little close to the rear carrier though other than that they should bolt right up if you want a real simulated experience at least that's how my 1 short course felt when I took it around the track lol

    I have a set if wheels that I keep sealed for creek running. Really does help keep the water out of them. So I would disagree with you on that point. Pull the bead off the morning you run the tighten back down to help with the pressure buildup.

      Great for keeping water out, but the performance of a sealed tire is very bouncy and the reason that I never suggest running that way. A good set of foams will out perform a sealed setup and I don't like to sacrifice the performance.

      Harley Designs I use sealed wheels and my truck isn't bouncy. I've also cut the foams that came with my tires in a star pattern. I can get to the same places 2.2's can. For aligning those wheels, I use a silver shaper and draw a very small line on the inside lip of both parts of the wheels so I can align them easier. You could also try and use small allen keys or wrenches to align them. My rc4wd wagon wheels can be a pain to put on my tires.

    Any tip on keeping the tiny bolts from falling out of these wheels? I've already lost one and had to tighten up two of them. I haven't even ran my truck with these wheels and already coming apart.

      If you're having issues, I'd get the RC4WD scale hex bolt tool and apply loctite to ensure they never come loose on you.

      SSD sent them to me directly, I did not buy them. RPP does their best to keep stock, they have to try and keep up with the demand.

      It accomplishes the same goal. I just don't do it because a 3 piece wheel often makes it more difficult for air to escape that way. Also some of the single stage foams don't breathe as well so when compressed the inner holes will get blocked. The tire method has just worked better for me overall.

      beadlocks them selves do not "preform better". they do hold the tire on the wheel so that you do not loose a bead (tire pooping off wheel)

    I assume these 325 Degrees are in Frenkensteins (fahrenheid) and not in sCience (Celcious) ?

      It's not a good smell but it isn't going to make the whole house smell for hours or anything. It goes away pretty quickly.

    I know you work for VP now, but how were these wheels, did they hold up well, worth buying?

      +nate emmett the screws fall out easily over time. The mounting style is tougher and the adjustment isn't easy. But they are cheap. They worked pretty well but if I was going cheap again I'd likely look to something different.

    Have an Axial Bomber that I have Pit bull tires, Axial bead lock wheels , Axial wheel weight in fronts, vanquish suspension upgrades. Climbs great but, I've had it twist on steep climb, raising front tire and flipping the Bomber over. It will raise the tire off the ground on good traction surfaces. A sway bar has been suggested, but what will that do to the climbing, the I bought it . I've tried heavier shock oil but very little help. I all so have a Wrait, close to a Bomber, that does not do this. Any help would 've great.

      +Dennis Harris a sway bar is the way to go. It will reduce flex but more flex is not needed for crawling. The height of the tire is all that's needed.

    i bought some wheels to my scx10 and they work fine but i have just 1 big problem. the wheels rub the hub arm and i manage to use some washer on it but there is a part that i need to buy in order to solve this problem or it supposed to use a washer?

      +angel rivera all depends on your knuckle. Or you can buy some Vanquish SLW hubs and SLW hub hardware, then slightly drill the wheels out so you can widen it up.

      Harley Designs honestly, i have always used the boiling method. i have a bird, and it would be unhappy (dead) with the baking method as well as acetone. boiling dosent make as bad of a smell as any others.

    dont cut the tire.. omg....use a hot needle and burn small holes to keep the integrity of the tire intact

    You claim that "venting" the tire is the way to go with proper foams and any other method is inferior. To an extent, in some cases I agree. But for someone who is almost a "professional" being in nation wide pro comps since 2007 ( you claim), you would think that you would realize your method for "venting" the tire is all wrong. Two reason I say this and you should know this. For one, your holes are to big leaving a huge welcome mat for all debris, small rocks, dirt clumps, and a bath tub for open water and mud. With the size of hole you leave, you are sure to collect debris that will totally throw off any "proven performance" you gain by "venting" and also leave your tires to full break down, maintenance, clean up and re-bead after every run just to keep your desired performance. The second issue is the fashion in which you create the "vent" in the tire. Never cut, rip or tear your tires for this. That was so NOVICE watching you cut them and ripping out a chunk. As you should also know as an experienced crawler, leaving these jagged edge cuts on the tire leaves them vulnerable to further ripping, tearing and shredding against sharp rocks during competition. You should always drill your hole with a 1/32" bit or use a body reamer tool for a clean small hole and do 1 to 3 holes around the tires center tread for the desired venting performance. If your going to instruct beginners on here how to do this, at least do it properly sheesh! Oh! and don't tell them sealing and airing is an inferior way to do things. It might not be your way but it is a good option especially for wet trails. If your going to do instruction videos, get your facts straight and stick to facts, not your opinion. Show them the options and let them decide what is best for them, not tell them one is better than the other because it is not in the case of trailing. You are going to have some poor beginner ruining their expensive tires in no time. Not everyone is a "Pro" like you.

      Getting debris in the tires has never been an issue with ruining any performance. Also the only way I have ever ripped a tire is when using foams that are much too soft and catching them on something like a knuckle screw. That hole has yet to ever be an issue. A 1/32" drill bit is not going to give enough air movement either. At a minimum I would use a 1/8" bit.
      Wet trails are wet trails and I understand the concern of water, but if performance is the goal and not minimizing maintenance, then venting is still the way I would instruct people to proceed. A single stage closed cell foam is waterproof (within reason) and will also allow for a minimum amount of break down maintenance.
      And yes, as I claim, I have been competing since 2007 at a National level.
