Having built drones before, I used to use a fully adjustable DC-DC regulator (which is exactly what 'programmable' BECs are) that barely costs US$1-2 to supply power to my FPV electronics on a separate circuit. Once wired in a similar fashion, it's a simple matter of using a multimeter and a mini screwdriver to dial down the output to anything from 6v to 7.4v or any other voltage to suit whatever gear you have (in your case a servo). They will happily pump out up to a whopping 5 amps all day. Adjustable regulators are the same size as the BEC you have there and wire up exactly the same way, but are waaaaaay cheaper than your fancy 'programmable' ones....
If you don't want to remove the wire from your ESC you can get a servo extender for a few cents and remove the wire on that. Also makes accessing castle link much easier if the extender runs outside of the receiver box.
I use a furrus ring as well. Your BEC usually comes with with one. If not, they are cheap enough or you may even be able to steal one out of an old floresecent twist bulb. Just disassemble and cut out the metal ring that has wire wrapped around it. You then take your extended wire from your BEC and wrap it several times around the Ring. It eliminates stray signals from the ESC and prevents servo jitter. I have a bad case of it in my airboat right now. I bought a handful of BEC's from H. K. ( turnigy) a while back for cheap.
Just wanted to say that while I am not new to RC, I am new to crawling and trail running. I just built a Wraith (see profile pic...LOL) with a high torque digital servo and a Sidewinder 3 ESC and sure enough....I need the BEC. This video made everything CRYSTAL clear...so many thanks!
You did a fantastic job explaining the bec functions and methods of use. People should have no problems following those simple instructions. I getting ready to install one as well ant though about doing a step by step installation video as well. Thumbsup
*THANK YOU!!!* I've actually been in the Hobby longer than you have...... Yet, what I knew about BECs could fit on the head of a pin!! 😲😲 I understood that they work something like a sophisticated capacitor, in that it provides dedicated power to the Servo. For the FIRST time, I actually understand why I need one of these, instead of a "Glitch Buster"(Capacitor Circuit). I've received SO many *BS* explanations of what a BEC does - it would even confuse YOU! I'm going to link this video every time someone asks me about using a BEC. Murph
Your very good at making these things as clear and easy to understand as possible. Enough so where anyone that could not follow clearly from this would need a bit of hands on help to learn. I had always stuck with 2 s so was happy with my stock ESC's BEC until lately I have over to 3s also and using 2200 packs as well. I've went with switching becs in my scalers now as well

Don't forget if powering a spectrum rx from the bind port to remove the yellow/orange wire from the bec. It's ground referenced and will set the rx to bind mode every time you power it on.
Thanks for this info. It was the most descriptive explanation for directly wiring the BEC to the servo (using the holmes bypass connector) thanks. Exactly what I want to do.
I’m making a v plow for my traxxas trx4 sport. I want to get a bec. I’m running the stock xl5 and 3 20kg amazon servos (2 for plow and 1 for steering) and I am also using a 2075 servo winch for it to raise and lower. How would you recommend hooking up a bec. Thanks I hope this isn’t confusing.
Awsome vid. It actually make's it easier to understand how a BEC should work effectively. I did not know about the Holm hobbies bypass. I would assume that the bypass makes the system work's a little more effectively because it is a in line hook up.atleast that is what I assume.
Lately I have considered eliminating my use of becs being how well the LiFe packs work as a receiver pack in my nitros even the 700mAh zippy LiFe 2s 6.6v receiver pack runs 3 digital high torque tank after tank in my Revo 3.3. And these packs are feather light. Also come in 1100mah version for a bit of extra runtime and amperage. I love them and figure the 700mAh version on a single servo scaler would last really long.
Jacob Hendrickson I don't see a reason to run a second battery. It's something else you would have to charge, it adds a lot of extra weight and becomes a packaging issue vs the tiny little BEC. There is a reason that BEC's are so popular.
Lot of great info in this one. Thumbs up for sure. Not that I don't thumbs up all of them (which I do) Already got the Castle Link as well as the BEC, but was wondering what ESCs, other than Castle Creation ESCs, work with the Castle Link.
Shawn, only ESC's made by castle work with the castle link. Such as some of the Axial ESC's as well as Holmes Hobbies. Holmes has castle build his ESC to the specs and programming he asks for.

I have a fusion 1800 with a flysky receiver (6channels) and the castle link BEC. Hello, i just got a deadbolt for Christmas been running a nimh and have had no problems. Bought a lipo 2s today when I plugged it in everything was unresponsive and was almost as if I was having radio interference... do you think this could be from not having a bec?
If I get a Hi-Tec High Voltage Servo that can handle 7.4V and I'm only running 2S, can I just cut the power (red) wire from the ESC to eliminate the internal BEC and run the servo off the full battery power?
is it possible for the bec to burn out the receiver if the output voltage of bec is beyond the limitation of the receiver? and will there be any damage if I over kill on the bec say if i use a 20amp bec for just one servo?
You know you said "don't leave it plugged in because it doesn't have a low voltage cut off" what happens if your esc has one and you have a anti spark system
So if I use a receiver bypass adapter with my sbec (Turnigy) I can leave the power wire in place going into the receiver so I can use my lights ? ... my question might sound off but I just woke up .
Depends on what you are doing with the servo. I am looking at the CYS S2220 for my Twin Hammers. But I don't know anyone who has experience with that brand. www.servodatabase.com/servo/cys/s2220
excellent. thank you, do these BECs come with specific voltage regulators? my receiver has a 6v maximum but I want to switch my NI CAD pack to a LIPO at least 7.4 v...and maybe 3000 mili amp....is it doable? thanks again
You could, but you need to run the signal wire to the RX still and having a common ground plug is also a good idea to help keep an electronic "noise" that may be in the system down.
Thats means bec/servo in channel 1..esc in channel 2 rite? If dont have wire, channel 1 bes, channel 2 servo, esc channel 3? And remove the red wire from esc..do i rite? Ty for help
Hey bud quick qiestuin. I had a previous setup where I plugged BEC servo and ESC i to the receiver. I did remove the center wire same way you did. Hey Bud, I bought on sale a RC4WD BEC, on one end it only have 2 wires (+ - ) and not 3 wires like this CC BEC, Is the Wiring the same as this one, or do I hve to keep all 3 wires from the ESC? ty
Harley im using novak 5a bec and it came with a switch.I have to turn on this switch to power my servo. So with that castle bec, is it applicable to solder a switch and allows your battery left plugged without draining it? Was that advisable?
What output does this bec come with stock before you have to also buy the castle link? Like what voltage is the bec putting out just out of the package?
It was sold to fund the Deadbolt. After building it to a roller all that was left was electronics and that didn't seem much different than what I had done before.

Even then, I would always advise you to unplug your lipo. Even an ESC that is turned off can bleed power slowly and kill your lipo.
LiPo or not, always unplug the battery. There is no need to supply power to a truck that is just sitting.

No you do not.
Harley Designs thank you

any info on 2 steering servos? My summit doesnt have an extra receiever slot so thats my only option
