- Here is my German reaction and commentary to Bernd das Brot - Nerd Party - Weird German Bread Guy. This a famous German pop culture show featuring a talking piece of bread. I thought it was hilarious.

There is nothing more german than an piece of bread, which is cynical and depressed
Bernd is aired late at night after the normal tv program ends, the KIKA (children channel) is a children TV channel that shows cartoons and children shows from 6:00 till 21:00. After 21:00 (9 pm) the program ends and Bernd is on loop till 6:00 (6 am)
Tell it like it is :) There a around a dozen episodes (each ~10 min) - each night another one is looping.
Bernd is obviously clinically depressed - and the beloved star on this childrens channel.

Gesundheit ist the german word for health and is also wished for an other if one had sneezed.
This is the only Bernd episode with a positive ending.
Normally, Bernd just gets more and more annoyed until the loop starts over again.
Tommy Krappweis, one of Bernd's co-creators (and the disembodied voice in this clip), is a massive nerd himself, and he wanted to show people that it's OK to have niche interests.
This Show is just a big fever dream, but it was always funny as a kid and still is
In 2007 a 2 meter statue of Bernd das Brot was stolen. It made national news. Luckily he was returned later 😂

There's nothing more relaxing than watching Bernd fly through space in a continuous loop at night.
I still don't know what fascinates me (and many others) about Bernd the Bread, but I'm happy that Tommy Krappweis had this brilliant idea. For this (and for his appearances on "Samstag Nacht") we should pay homage to him every year ^^
I remember 20 years ago, when I still was in university, my neighbour came around one night and told me that I should turn on the children's channel on TV. Back then, they aired the very first night loop of Bernd: ruclips.net/video/DwSyXG_m7og/видео.html
The background is that the children's channel (reasonably) stopped airing at 7 pm every day and shared the frequency with another channel. But eventually, it was on the frequency alone, instead of showing snow or a test picture, they cut some clips of the day programme and sent it in a loop. That became so popular among young adults who never heard of Bernd before, that they kept it and made new material, just for an older audience and showed it at nighttime.

Bernd das Brot came a long way. He started out as a sidekick in a children's show called "ChiliTV", where a stunt sheep called Chili was to try new equipment build by a shrub called Briegel der Busch, and Bernd das Brot was the guinea pig the equipment was tested on. Hence his depression, his sardonic remarks about anything happening around and especially to him, and his longing for boredom and tranquility. He often tells the audience that his understanding of happiness is to stare at a woodchip wallpaper and memorize its pattern.
The KiKa (Kinder Kanal, Children's TV Channel) sends Bernd das Brot features in an endless loop between 9 pm. and 6 pm., when there is no programming. The robotic arm in the opening sequence usually drops Bernd into the scene, and then he is forced to be the host for the night. A running gag is that Bernd is trapped within the TV screen and can't leave, because when he runs outside the frame, he immediately re-enters the frame from the opposite side.

I somehow wait for some english reactor to discover the Bullyparade. Especially the clips with their "Traumschiff" are available on YT, but sadly without subtitles

Bernd is one of the most important characters every made for german TV. He has educated and entertained children for decades now.
He always appears on Kika from 9 pm to 6 am the next day.

This is a night show on a children's channel. Perfect when you come home from a bad rave and cannot sleep yet. A bad rave because good raves in Germany last well into the children program.

You can set the television so that children can only watch the children's channel and if a child wants to watch TV after 9 p.m., there runs Bernd the bread. And it's so boring and pointless that you hope the children will voluntarily go back to bed.

For some, "Bernd das Brot" is really iconic. I love Bernd das Brot in space as an Astronaut! It is shown in the late evening/ or in the night, when the program is over. It`s so cute and funny!
Not a monologue. He communicates with the few or even only viewer(s). "Still here?"
And tries desperately to motivate them to switch to another TV channel.
If all would be gone he could finally enjoy his favorite pastime - doing nothing.
dont know if the actual show got subbed as well but if you like these latenightfillers you definetly also will like the actual show and should watch it
I can't help but feel a bit disappointed that this particular episode seems to garner all the attention, while the others are equally fun and well-crafted.
But that might also be because I'm a typical North German, and North Germans have a very dry and sometimes darker then the night sense of humor that has to be cleverly delivered for us to find it funny. (Or so flat that you have to put your feet up.)

As you may have guessed, it's a tv channel usually targeted at kids. They run their usual program from 6 AM to 9 PM. After that they run several different loops of Bernd the Bread in his white hell. It began well over 25 years ago as a stop gap measure for the MDR (Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk) who had a kids show running each day featuring Chili the sheep, Briegel the Bush, and Bernd the Bread in various outrageous and often completely non-sensical adventures. Chili was the hyperactive, adrenaline junkie stunt girl looking for a participant to her newest wild escapades involving dangerous stunts; Briegel the geeky science guy always looking for a guinea pig to test out his newest, wildest scifi style inventions on...
Aaaand then there was Bernd the loaf of bread with far too short arms (virtually non existent) and legs. So he was basically never able to fend them off or even run away.
Bernd Ioves boredom, because boredom means he has a few minutes of peace and quiet. He would gladly spend an afternoon watching paint dry if it meant he was not in the vicinity of the other two.
Weeeell, even when the actual kids' show is over, he is always shown into these "white hell" screen situations. He never can escape, no matter the direction he tries to run; he always pops in from the opposite side again. The premise of the daily white hell changes regularly.
Thus Bernd in the late night loops became a cult status. People began making bets on what would be done to this cynical, depressed, satirical bread this night, just to discuss it the next day.
Oh, and Bernd KNOWS 100% that he is on tv, and is forced to endure the current lunacy just for the enjoyment of the audience. He often rants about it as well.

They made a series (different than night loops), but only 3 sessions were made.
Bernd is just a cynical fed up guy who makes(in this episode) fun of pop czltured influences.

I have watched quite a bit of the Star Trek TOS and TNG though!
@@UntilWeregoing well I haven't even watched all of the Star Wars movies. Maybe I should. Trek is more focused on TV shows and less on movies and somehow that resonates more with me. But you're lucky. Haven't watched DS9 yet. I wish I could erase my memories and watch again.
The show picks up pace 3rd season onwards and when it aired in Germany on TV it was on the cliffhanger from the 4th to 5th season when I as a student bought the expensive remaining 3 seasons from the US, hacked my DVD player to play Region 1 DVDs. I was lucky that my TV supported NTSC. And then I binge watched the rest. Is really has you on the edge of your seat.

Bernd has reached cult status among drunks and stoners!! It was originally meant for toddlers who woke up in the middle of the night and only know the two most important buttons on the remote. Better for them than soft porn or horror movies...
