I remember sitting in front of the TV and watching these loops over and over again, because I found them so funny. And I still appreciate them, Bernd is such an iconic character. Two of my other favorite episodes: The first one is about the dangers of the internet (I think that one has English subs too, it's called "Die Internet Freundschaft") and one explains the history of Germany in a funny way.
"Bernd das Brot" was one of the biggest culture shocks for me when my family moved to Austria in the late 90's. I was a lonely 5-year-old with persisting sleep disturbances in a foreign land on the other side of the world. Sometimes, when zapping between channels late at night, I would see this sinister-looking, depressing loaf of bread talking in a language I didn't understand and it made me _so_ upset, lol. At almost 30, I can fully appreciate its dry, absurdist humor (as I'm into much weirder, darker comedy now) but I still can't shake off the anxiety I felt as a child. It would be cool to see more Bernd reactions from you.
I loved Bernd das Brot when I was still in uni roughly 30 years ago. It was absolutely ultra-level sarcastic watching already running gags being twisted into new versions of themselves. It all began with Bernd being stuck in white hell screen, where he left on one side of the screen just to pop in back on the other side. No matter which direction he took, he always returned to the white hell of nothing. This got twisted into so many variations over the years that it became a game of "Have you seen what they did to Bernd last night?" on the next day. That he is basically a loaf of bread with far too short arms, really just hands stuck to the body, exacerbates several situations. Bernd got more and more cynical each and every time, and his trademark, short, quipped "Mist!" / "Crap!" became a standard meme to anything you even marginally disliked, long before the term meme was even first mentioned.
Wait…you’re telling me these white void Bernd short films have existed 30 years ago 💀 I knew of the show with Chilli and Briegel, but thoight the midnight shorts are from the early 2000s
@@sirpr3ce855 Nope, before them KI.KA had only the usual until tomorrow banner. I'm quite certain it changed around 15 years ago or so, not three (but most did not even know it existed, as there was nothing to see before 2008) - at least Wikipedia says so.
The 'Night Loop' is a decades-long staple at the KIKA and used as filler for when there's no actual program to be aired (for the reason you guessed: children asleep). The KIKA once used different snippets from the shows featuring Bernd as a replacement for the 'not on air' signal,as they didn't share the channel with another program that would complement their airing. And after some time, buzzed young adults, returning from the clubs at or around midnight got a kick out of plopping in front of the TV and just drunk-watching the depressed bread. Ever since then, KIKA changes the loop once a month or so. And even started producing exclusive 'Night Loops', rather targeting drunk adults than kids, about 10ish years ago.

Ok, here's some background info nobody asked for. The co-inventor of Bernd is a German comedian, author, producer, film maker and multi talent called Tommy Krappweis. It's also his voice that narrates the show. He is a lifelong nerd himself (you guessed it) and has been a regular guest at several fan conventions in Germany for decades (sorry Tommy, I did not want to imply that you're old). The guests at Bernds nerd party are cosplayers he met at these conventions. It's so weird to see all these people I know on TV. Also, there's ton of inside jokes that nobody, who wasn't present, understands. It cracks me up every time. Also, there is another Bernd das Brot night loop about Hitler that is even weirder and more awesome if you want to check it out.
I didn´t know that those were cosplayers Tommy knew. I always just thought they were people working for KIKA or ARD/ZDF who dressed up for that sketch.
the lore behind the wallpaper was a running gag in his show (from the early 2000s), that his favourite freetime activity was learning the pattern of his woodchip wallpaper in-and.out. The show also featured his 2 flatmates "Chili the sheep" who was a stunt-loving female sheep and "Briegel the bush", a guy that is a plant and a scientist. He was mostly annoyed by his flatmates shenanigans and it was hilarious xD
Thanks for reacting to our Creation! We appreciate it a lot and it's great to hear from so many fans. (And all the others too ;-) ) Greetings from the authors/producers ❤
The joke is that Bernd always gets put into silly and hilarious situations by the producer every night and has to act them out. 😂 There is really nothing more to it! The topics he has to play out range from evening to evening, so it never gets boring (especially because he hates it so much, but he is so loveable at the same time in his old grandpa-way! 😂 Bernd is such a classic! ❤️)
The topics rarely relate to him being a bread, he's basically just a depressed and bitter person in a bread-body. He's also a bit like Squidward in the sense that he's the cynical and stuck up "adult" character who needs to loosen up. I think the moral of this episode is actually done in a very German approach. First we make fun of the nerds and Bernd refuses to be concidered one of them because he's "above that" and they are cringe and pathetic. Ridiculing nerds the way they did had the effect - for me as a German person - that it bluntly conveys that, yes, from the outside being a nerd looked pretty cringy at the time this aired but in the end Bernd had to accept that actually those are just people like him, passionate about their hobbies and special interests. Shaming THEM for simply having fun in the harmless way they do is no more "right" than ridiculing Bernd for his special interest in history of Wall paper. It may seem more sophisticated but at its core its pretty much the same "nerd" behavior. He's just as "cringe" as them so he joins them, cause even if it may look weird for some people from the outside, there is literally no harm in it. Just let people be. That's the message ^^
@@timefliesaway999 this episode aired in 2013 for the first time, it's therefore a product of its time. And alot has happened in the last decade for how nerds are perceived in main stream society.
I remember watching this for the first time, and thinking that there was nothing worse than being into DnD. Guess who's spend 5 years on developing a homebrew DnD setting complete with lore and a pantheon of gods by now? Yup. Turns out I'm one hell of a nerd, and genuinely enjoy it.
@@timefliesaway999 The image of nerds has changed a lot, but even today nerdculture is still seens as a bit weird. Videogames are very mainstream now, but larp or dnd are still not exactly something people see as cool...
Bernd was part of shows that were shown at the day and at first the stuff shown at night were just clips from that focused on him in an endless loop till morning. After he became popular with his night show they made exclusive material just for the night show.
you were right about his knowledge about wallpaper :D one of his biggest hobbies is staring at woodchip wallpaper, which he sometimes even just does in the episodes running at night. Some years ago they published a book "written by him" with more of his depressed nonsense, 4 pages were just woodchip wallpaper "for you enjoyment"
@@derstoffausdemderjoghurtis Not in a episode of Chili tv it is explained: that because of home work he could not play with other children and watching his wallpaper is the only thing could do. From that IT turned to his Hobby like watching his favorit TV Chanel Germanys most boring railroads.
The co-inventor of Bernd das Brot, Tommy Krappweis, also co-hosts twitch and youtube channels called wildmics. He is hosting several shows that focus on public education. Aside from Bernd, he wrote several books, appeared as a stuntman and comedian in many popular german TV shows and openly opposes the far-right movement in germany. Great person.
the endless loop is the most horryfying part. you think it's a nice-ish end? wham bam, get thrown back to the start. and you KNOW Bernd remembers it all. psychological torture
I love Bernd - and i am always happy to see something from him. His depressed, sarcastic comments fits in so many situations. Bernd is the most german bread ever baked :D
I think you're missing out in a crucial part of this - we usually watched this at night after getting drunk/smoking weed as teens. This is what made it so mystically popular. I had two younger siblings that would have been at target group age for the channel at that time, and they were actually scared of the bread 😂
Originally Bernd was part of a show called "Tolle Sachen" with 2 other characters Chili Schaaf and Briegel Busch. Chili was meant to be the main character, but Bernd was better received by the audience. There were several spin of series with spoofs of other shows, "Berndi Broter and the Box of Disasters" (Harry Potter), "USS Bumblebee Bush" (Star Trek), etc. They were all on TV in the daytime. So the "Nachtschleife" (night loop) you watched is another show, exclusively with Bernd.
@@stereoI8II8I daran hatte ich auch schon gedacht, aber ist das nicht etwas schwach im Vergleich zu den anderen Benennungen? Da muss doch noch etwas anderes dahinterstecken ; )
May favorite part is when he says "Mist". It wasn't a very popular swearword before and he says it in such a distinct way. I like to say it now and think of Bernd.
Ingrain (or wood-chip) wallpaper is the most common type of wallpaper in Germany because it is widely used in office spaces and public buildings (we mainly use wallpaper rather than painting the walls). It's seen as a symbol for mundane and boring aspects of the average daily life, so if someone were to care about ingrain wallpaper he would be seen as especially weird and nerdy, since nobody cares about ingrain wallpaper because there is nothing exciting about it. Kind of like people standing outside of airports to watch planes take off and then discuss what kind of plane it is, but times a hundred (no offense to those people though, you do you)
Should add: not just office and public buildings, every place I've ever rented had wood chip wallpaper, and while most landlords will allow you to paint or cover the walls with whatever you want, there is usually a clause in the contract in which you are obligated to leave the place the way you got it. Edit: Should add add, I'm from the former east, but I've also lived in Regensburg for a few years - lived in a place with the same kind of stipulations.
@@harzor4328 After enough layers of paint it's very flat. I have it on the ceilings after 35 years and many paintings it don't look like wood-chip anymore.
@@FutureChaosTV Wood panels are very hip at the moment like the furniture from the 60th and 70th. I'm happy I kept the danish teak furniture from my parents, my son took them for his new house.
Most of all this museum scene was a reference to the very first night-loop where Bernd tried to waste some time by staring at the wallpaper. For about a minuted they showed just a empty white screen, identifies it as a digital wood-chip wallpaper.
The humor of that show went right over your head, but that's understanable if you're not familiar with it. "Bernd das Brot" was always supposed to be a nihilistic fever dream. Judging by your mood at the end of the video, it definitely had the intended effect 😂
Wieso, er hat den ganzen Sarkasmus doch verstanden. Er hat zumindest ein paar mal behauptet dass es ihm auch gefällt und überhaupt sieht er ja immer so gelangweilt aus.
This video was a crazy flashback for me! I remember having watched this episode on loop for *quite* a while when I was a child… Well, I’d say it has definitely left its mark. I do have a messed up sense of humor too (and I love it). Thanks Bernd, and thanks to you reacting to this
The hilarious thing watching this for me was, that "red shirt" actually IS a cinematic expression for an (unimportant) person appearing in an episode, for them to die, to show how dangerous a place or situation is! 🤣 And it IS derived from Star Trek!! New props in red shirts/uniforms would simply appear one episode and just die in it. That was their whole grand purpose. It is so funny, that Bernd got that so accurately right! The creator of this show really is a genius! 😂
@@Anthyrion That is so funny! 🤣 O yeah the Stormtrooper is also a trope! They are basically just to show that there is an Army (and they look all the same, because face and expression are not important). I actually did my (you could say) bachelor thesis on movie tropes. There are so many cool and interesting more! You will never watch movies the same way again if you know them, because you will notice them anywhere! 😂 Actually the shooting and missing is propably more the "A-Team firing" trope. (I am flatly translating from German here) The A-Team (heroes) would always hit and the bad guys would always miss them, despide massive barrage of bullets. 😂
@@Danisachan Ich weiß. Damals musste es familienfreundlich sein. The Kid-channel KIKA is usually shut down over the night. At some point in time, they had the capacity on the satellite anyway and instead of sending a static image with the information "This is KIKA, program will continue at 6:00 in the morning, they showed videos like this in an endless loop. The result was, that this channel got among the highest ratings of all TV-channels in the middle of the night. I think this stuff is perfect for people who are switching thru the channels at 3:00am. Another very successful night channel shows the "Space Night". This is mostly old footage from the space race in the 60's and other material from space mixed with electronic music.
The night loops aren't meant for kids, it's a staple for drunk or otherwise intoxicated adults, returning home and getting a few minutes of good humored chillout before falling asleep. 😁 And during the regular broadcast Bernd is the straight man, the foil to two other characters. There's Chili the Sheep, stuntwoman and adrenaline junkie, and Briegel the Bush, mad scientist, inventor, and subscriber to get-rich-quick-schemes. Even if Bernd does not like to admit it, he would do anything for his friends and gets roped into lots of misadventures. And he sings the Blues, they produced an album on cd about twenty years ago. As a companion piece they even filmed a little story with the different tracks, I bet it's still around on the net somewhere.
Bernd das Brot is such a big meme here in germany in the current 20+ genereation....because we all watched that when we were young xDDD And it was so great and funny...and it gets so relatable when you get older, especially nowadays with a the conflicts in the world..... This Bread is a legend.
I remember him doing a quiz show and he complained that no one would call because the information on the letter said that you could win 1000 Euros but it would cost 1 000 000 Euros per Minute. And all the Bread was doing was to explain that no one would call because they would loose money even if the call would only last one second. So he would just wait near a telephone for a call that would never come.
My favourite gag from that is when his friend and Producer calls the number and Bernd explains that he just wasted 1000.000 Euros by calling and then it jump cuts to the friend whiting out all the zeroes so it says it costs a Euro to call instead.😂

I discovered this program as an adult, I liked it, but I always tought the loops intention was primarily to get the kids bored so that they finally go to bed. I have to admit that there must have been a lot of thought and work put into it. It happend regularly that I used to watch it before I went to bed. Usually I watched the loop three times to fully enjoy all the funny little twists and jokes. I never found that the bread was depressed, but I am from Vienna, so being a little bit grumpy all the time seems relatively normal to me. 😉
2:33 He is probably referring to "upps die pannenshow" which was also a late night TV show back in the day It's similar to fail video completions but with moderation
I remember Bernds hilarious nonsense running at night when there was no program on the Kika (Kinderkanal / Kids Channel). I used to watch it when i came home wasted from a party.
Regarding the woodchip wallpaper. I remember him always going "I would much rather sit at home and memorize the pattern of my woodchip wallpaper than do this"
oh, this is gold! Please more! 😂Are there other Bernd videos with subtitles? I would not have thought that, but the humor is really quite well transferred in the translation
The bread is depressed and mean because he went through a lot of things. And it is not even his fault, his two "friends" drag him into it every time. He is forced into this situations.

There are several different sketches/themes for these late night skits of Bernd and once they've run through their ca 12mins runtime the same skit will just start over again and loop all night through until the morning program starts again They change which skit is playing every now and then, though I don't know how often, though I definitely know that I've seen specifically this Nerd one a lot already Bernd is also part of a puppet trio within an actual Bernd das Brot TV series with Chili the Sheep and Briegel the Bush, in which (if I remember this show correctly from my childhood) he's basically the pessimistic, depressed guy forced to share a living space with the outgoing, action-seeking Chili and scientist/inventor Briegel, both of which will constantly try to involve him in their shenanigans and even if they don't, the fact that he's living in close quarters with them already disturbs his peace by itself
I remeber directly, whenever i accidentally fell asleep while watching tv as a child and when i woke up, Bernt das Brot was on the tv. He was peak interesting and i loved him. I think this moment happend to every german/swiss (bc im from swiss) child.
Bernd likes flour soup and boring stuff. His favourite activity is looking at wallpapers. In his original show he was in a team with a hyper active Sheep and a mad genius Bush. They used him as test subject and he hated it. There are more of these night fillers. You should watch the first one to understand why he is in there and can't get out.
The thing with the wallpaper is that Bernd likes to be at home and stare at his wall. And the most common wallpaper we have in Germany are woodchip wallpapers. If I recall correctly Bernd eventually remembered the pattern of his woodchip wallpaper too.
You absolutely have to watch the other episodes too! Nice to see a non-German appreciate this part of our childhood! Heartfelt greetings from the German state of Saxony.
17:36 to answer the question: in old shows whenever he was not feeling like it he said he would preffer to stare at his wall at home. However this addiction to staring at the wall made him love wallpapers
Thanks for this episode. I know it's difficult to explain and you seemed a bit confused, but I simply love Bernd das Brot with all it's absurde scenes and situations. They have several episodes which run then each for days in an endless loop in the night. There are so many details you might not see the first time and it's simply a nice way of saying "intermission, see you tomorrow morning, have a nice night"
4:32 fun fact: according to a study this happens because the neurons in our brain which have connected to form our understanding of this word (in this case „fork“) are fired repeatedly by us saying the word over and over which leads to the neurotransmitter (used to transport signals between neurons) for these neurons running low which leads to the signals not being sent correctly. That is also why it will sound normal again if you don’t think about it for a bit (the neurotransmitter gets replenished).
KiKa is the german Children's Channel. At night, when the normal programm has ended, Bernd das Brot is on air for many hours until the program starts again the next morning. It is Bernd for hours on TV, no loop, everything he says and does is different. No commercial breaks. And it is also different the next days. I don't know how many hours of Bernd das Brot there are, but the channel have to have hundreds of hours. There were days I watched it for hours.
As someone who grew up with this bread, I'm glad that Bernd is even known in other countries. I didn't expect him to be anywhere else, considering some people in germany don't know him.
"Bernd das Brot" is really just a creative way to fill the time between the channel's broadcast end and start (during the night), He doesn't tell the weather (as far as I know)... You have to know that KIKA is part of the german public broadcast, which has got shitload of money and is not dependent on money from commercials. So they may had some unused money and some bored employee and this was the crazy result of this combination xD It's kind of entertaining, especially when you take LSD or Shrooms, we did that back in college days and watched it through the whole night, although it constantly repeats the short clips, and you watch the same shit again and again. We had so much fun ^^
In Erfurt (in Germany) there are various figures from the Kika programs, including Bernd the bread, the Sandman, Captain Bluebear, Hein Blöd and TigerEnte
This just makes sense when you are awake in the middle of the night, when you cannot sleep, when there is no other TV programm which would be worth to watch, and you watch this holy crap over and over again when it loops through the night. Now this is a really early episode where many things happen. Nowadays is is much more hypnotic, which I prefer more.
You're right with that this is a show for the drunken. Watched it a lot in my teenage years when i came home drunken or watched it with friends while we were drinking. Or making drinking games, like take a shot everytime he's saying "mist".
Bernd has several clips and yes in one of them he does the weather. Maybe you noticed it but in the end the clip cuts to a white screen like there was in the beginning. On TV they loop all night long.
I discovered Bernd das Brot after moving to Germany from the US. My take on it? It is best enjoyed stoned, late on a Saturday night. Then, it is effing hilarious!
We used to watch „Bernd das Brot“ on chill outs after techno parties. When you are completely high and wasted, this show is something else, I tell you 😂
If you want the full experience, just imagine after the video ends there is a screen telling you that KiKa starts again its normal program at 6 am for about 60 seconds, then the same movie of Bernd starts looping again. And again. And again...
It's quite easy, the whole point of the show is that Bernd is a depressed people-hater who just wants to be left alone. But the spooky voice just won't let him. Oh, and that he is a bread.
The lore of the woodchip wallpaper is that in one very old episode the gags became too silly, so Bernd opted to stare and comment on the wallpaper instead, eventually playing a melancholic song and just showing that for a few minutes.
Well we actually say “nerd” too but translated it means “Streber” (male nerd) and “Streberin” (female nerd). Nowadays a lot of english words are used in Germany as well so it is fine to use both. I think tho that “Streber” is more used when it comes to the “top-graded-students” and is kind of more the nerd in school. The “nerd” is more like a society seen person: the one that collects things, is passionate about certain things and so on (like the things that are listed in the video). Hope that it kinda helped
There is a difference between Streber and Nerd. A Streber will always try to have the best grades in school, as well by learning as by being teacher's darling etc. Whereas Nerd is the american nerd: Specialized in one thing up to no sense, while being a bit strange. The word "Nerd" describes an asperger autist, the word "Streber" describes a very ambitious child.
My partner and I often quote some of Bernd's best phrases, also I lived in Erfurt, city in Thuringia where the KiKa has their main office. All over the city you can find many of their popular mascots. Right next to the historic Town Hall you can find him as a statue. Also:"Alle zusammen tanzt das Brot!"
The improvised magic spell from bernd might be a reference to another famous (actually for) kids show: "Bibi Blocksberg", a young witch living in Neustadt (the city where another german culture icon, "My best friend Conni", lives) or occasionally on a horse ranch with her best friend Tina (in the "Bibi und Tina"-spinoff, which I actually watched more than the original). Her magic spells also always rhyme and end with "Hex Hex" (or "whizz whizz" as it is translated here). Yeah so anyways it's pretty big and basically everyone in Germany, or at least all the girls I know, have recognise it, there are tv shows, books, audiobooks and even movies (it was always such a huge event in my childhood when a new movie dropped). Idk it is also such a german thing, maybe you wanna check it out^^
Bernd originated in a show called tolle sachen (awesome things) . There were also briegel the bush ( practicaly a plant guy who was also a crazy inventor) and chilly the sheep ( who was into extremesports and such things if i remember correctly). The show was a bit like a shopping show were they presented briegels invetions, using bernd as a guniea pig

Ah yes, Sendeschluss
Totally correct, love these nights 4 o clock back at home with some friends totally drunk and watching Bernd till u fall a sleep

Bernd das Brot isn't just a bread, it's a way of life. 🖤
Wasn't Tommy Krappweis "the New Guy" at RTL Samstag Nacht or another of that shows? I vividly remember his introduction into it.
@@HalfEye79 Yes, he was! :)
I didn´t know that those were cosplayers Tommy knew. I always just thought they were people working for KIKA or ARD/ZDF who dressed up for that sketch.
How many different Bernd das Brot episodes are there? I as a german myself only remember two or three
So, you're a nerd too? 🤣
the lore behind the wallpaper was a running gag in his show (from the early 2000s), that his favourite freetime activity was learning the pattern of his woodchip wallpaper in-and.out.
(And all the others too ;-) )

Sitze hier und grinse due ganze Zeit. Wie oft

How are nerds cringe tho. If you think that you’re rather are an American, not a German xP
@@timefliesaway999 this episode aired in 2013 for the first time, it's therefore a product of its time. And alot has happened in the last decade for how nerds are perceived in main stream society.

I hope they chose 4 different types of woodchip wallpaper so people won‘t get bored easily.
I believe the wallpaper joke is a reference to visual hallucinations induced by psychedlic drugs.
@@derstoffausdemderjoghurtis Not in a episode of Chili tv it is explained: that because of home work he could not play with other children and watching his wallpaper is the only thing could do. From that IT turned to his Hobby like watching his favorit TV Chanel Germanys most boring railroads.
In Berd das Brot the series one of his hobbies is also watching Germanys most boring railroads😁😁

Wallpaper is not the norm anymore I think.
It was very big in the 70's and 80's though.
Same as wood panels on the walls and ceiling.
Yeah haha... there are definitely more versions.... and this show always runs in a loop!! The whole night there
The humor of that show went right over your head, but that's understanable if you're not familiar with it.
"Bernd das Brot" was always supposed to be a nihilistic fever dream. Judging by your mood at the end of the video, it definitely had the intended effect 😂
Wieso, er hat den ganzen Sarkasmus doch verstanden.

There is also a Meme, that includes both Universes. The Stormtrooper shoots, misses but the Red Shirt dies anyway^^

You have to watch the other loops as there arent that many of them and are all around 20 minutes and its the funniest shit ever
The night loops aren't meant for kids, it's a staple for drunk or otherwise intoxicated adults, returning home and getting a few minutes of good humored chillout before falling asleep. 😁
And during the regular broadcast Bernd is the straight man, the foil to two other characters.

There are several different sketches/themes for these late night skits of Bernd and once they've run through their ca 12mins runtime the same skit will just start over again and loop all night through until the morning program starts again
They change which skit is playing every now and then, though I don't know how often, though I definitely know that I've seen specifically this Nerd one a lot already
Bernd is also part of a puppet trio within an actual Bernd das Brot TV series with Chili the Sheep and Briegel the Bush, in which (if I remember this show correctly from my childhood) he's basically the pessimistic, depressed guy forced to share a living space with the outgoing, action-seeking Chili and scientist/inventor Briegel, both of which will constantly try to involve him in their shenanigans and even if they don't, the fact that he's living in close quarters with them already disturbs his peace by itself

Wow, thank you for this information I never knew I needed!

BTW, if it is dubbed you should check out the internet and social media episode, one of the best ever
