This is my reaction to Rammstein - Deutschland
In this video I make my first reaction to German rock music group Rammstein and their epic song Deutschland. This was an unbelievable experience for the senses both visually and musically, which give me a great insight into the rich history of Germany

As a German, i must say that nothing before had described my feelings about my country more than this masterpiece from Rammstein.

Just know Germans aren't the only ones who have similar feelings about their own country. I'm not trying to compare or equate the Germany to the United States. As an American, I love my country, but then there's our history of slavery, how native Americans were treated etc. Even today we have our problems. It can be difficult to love your country that has done so much evil, while doing good. We need to learn from our mistakes and try to find a way to learn to from our terrible mistakes in the past (and even the mistakes we sadly still commit.). I truly wish we can all agree to accept each other and end centuries of conflict and war. We are so much more the same than we are different.
@@GeographRickEvery country has blood on their shirts and dead bodies in their basements. Slavery, war crimes or anything comparable. Theres no nation on this planet that didnt do bad things. But the point is neither to romanticize/ denying your countries mistakes, nor living in constant guilt (to the point you despise your country). Its the golden middle: Accept and remember the flaws, but also look and the good things your country did (inventions, poetry, litratur, science, etc.).
As a Russian, same here. Just substitute Deutschland for Russland...

And yes, America had made its own History Mistakes. Maybe US Politics in the Middle East, Irak is one of them...
“Germany above all” (old national anthem) actually meant that the nation was more important than the individual. It was the time when there were still many individual states and the Germans, unlike the French and English, had not yet grown together into a nation of all Germans . The Nazis later reinterpreted the text to mean that Germany stood above all other nations. Due to this poisoning of the German language, the part of the national anthem was deleted and today only the third verse of the "Deutschlandlied" is sung. Third verse = Unity and law and freedom... as I said, this words this text was written in 1841.
I want to point out that there is only a one letter difference between "Deutschland über allem" (original) and "Deutschland über allen" (Rammstein version). It shows in a powerful way how such a slight difference can change so much meaning.

I am not a big Rammstein Fan (although I am German). But this song (and "Zeit") especially with the video is actually a masterpiece.

The German flag is black, red and gold (not yellow)... Germania therefore often wears gold.
from the heraldic standpoint gold is identical to yellow (as much as white and silver are identical)
She always wears the colors of the German flag at the respective time period - Black, red and gold for the Holy Roman Empire, the Weimar Republic and the present time, black, white and red for the 2nd and 3rd Reich and even white as the flag for capitulation.

Not only does the video document significant episodes in German history over 2000 years, but it also documents Rammstein's discography over their first 25 years. There are Easter eggs throughout. The red laser symbolises the Rote Faden or continuous thread throughout Germany's history, a constant circle of violent rise culminating in a dramatic and catastrophic fall. The lead make actors in the video are the six band members, all of whom have been members since 1994. The concentration camps scene caused outrage amongst Jewish communities because it was used in the trailer and there was no context to the rest of the video. You can't look at the history of Germany and disregard this period. It's a fascinating and breathtakingly brutal but honest dissection of the conflict felt from being proud of your country but ashamed of its past. Btw, the dogs are Leonbergers who were almost wiped out by the end of the two world wars but have seen a resurgence of late. A new start for Germany with Rammstein in protective suits perhaps signifying the desire to sanitize the past but red gloves on suggesting blood on the hands from the past. The end song is the piano version of Sonne, here comes the sun. The band are usually seen walking together in videos showing band unity. The point about Till Lindemann, the frontman, being accused of and investigated over sexual assault. All investigations were dropped due to lack of evidence. He's innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law. The court of media and public opinion holds no clout other than to smear based on flawed information.

I think the red gloves, especially in the final shot, are part of the game they play with the colors of the German flag. Sometimes they are very subtle eg. when Germania is on the stake she has a black leather headmask and a bleeding red body above a the golden fire. Most of the times it's her black skin and something red and something golden on her. Sometimes you can see the colors of other historical German flags.

What you're doing is juxtaposing years of collected allegations against Lindemann (and, by the way, decades of problematic behavior in pop culture) with a completely unfounded accusation. The video goes into different parts of German history from Roman times (battle of Teutoburger forest against the Romans, the wild 20s in the Weimar republic, corruption in the DDR, the 3rd Reich, the terrorism by the RAF [Red Army Faction] in the 70s, …)
They really had an eye for detail here (for examples the execution scene with the symbols on the prisoner uniforms and such)
The refrain is also quite good and represents a feeling which many Germans can relate to: Germany my heart in flames, Germany I want to love and damn you […] Germany your love is a curse and blessing at the same time. Germany my love I can’t give to you.
On the „Deutschland, Deutschland über allen“ (Germany, Germany above all)part: It goes back to a time when Germany as a nation didn’t exist and meant „Unity is more important then our differences“ and then was used in the anthem of the Weimar Republic (Das Lied der Deutschen / The song of the Germans) and then misused by the Nazis to mean „Gwrmany is better then everyone else“ that’s also a reason the current anthem is actually only the third stanza of the Lied der Deutschen starting with the national motto „Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit“ (Unity and Justice and Freedom)
There are actually quite nice analysis of the lyrics and symbolism in the song - it could be used in history lessons I think. You might want to look up one of the analysis in English.
Battle of Teutoburger forest was 9 AD. The video says 16 AD, so it's probably about Germanicus' campaigns. The battle of the Teuteburg Forest is much better known, so the choice of musicians is a little surprising
@@schnelma605 I'm pretty sure the so-called battle of the Teutoburg Forest is alluded to here, even though slightly misdated. Historical accuracy maybe is a bit too much to be expected from a rock band here. Or maybe some generic Roman-Germanic skirmish, as the precise battle doesn't really matter in the context of the video.
@@marcusunbenannt7477 the scene is most likely the soldiers of germanicus discovering the remains of the battle and the following massacre which were still clearly visible at that time.
When this song came out I actually asked my history teacher whether we could watch this and analyse both video and lyrics. And he agreed (probably helped that he is a Rammstein fan). We did so and it was an awesome lesson. So I agree, this could and should be used in history lessons in germany at some point. If only to make it more captivating and striking for those students who are not as interested in history from the get go

I'm genuinely impressed on how much of the symbolism you pick up on.
The band all grew up in East Germany.
Allow me to give you some thoughts from someone who's born here. First of all, first time I watched the video I was shocked and deeply moved. The song/ video takes a very deep look into our german souls and how a lot of us feel about our country. It's a love- hate- relationship. The video is loaded with tons of symbols, that as a German you catch onto.
Let's start: in the intro you see Germania ( Personification of Germany) during roman/ germanian tribes time.
The red Lazer represents the "red thread" of the story/ history.
Astronauts from the future bringing Germania in a glass coffin (snow-white) so she can lead through the/her german history.
Next you observe the twenties(Weimar Republic).The prison scene representing the rough, violent times especially for the majority of the population struggling to survive. Money raining down/ the great depression. And Germany's first try as a democratic state. In between Germania is dressed in knight's armor awaking her knights/band with the Lazarus spear.
Next Germania is pushed in a wheelchair by the band through the Berlin Holocaust Memorial with burning bodies. (Imagine the statue of liberty being shown like that)
Next vignette the office scene showing east Germany and west Germany reunited (1990).
Then you're being taken back to mideveal times, monks/ church are feasting off of Germania. In most scenes you'll see some church man involved. No coincidence.
The concentration camp scene in the background you see V2 rockets ignition. The inmates are wearing different types of stars on their chests and a sign on the gallows reads: no photos. Germania wears an eye-patch first on her left, than on her right eye.
Than a quick shot of Germania dressed modern with lots of gold leading german shepherds., representing Germany's wealth.
The 70's scene shows the RAF- extremists holding Germania/ Germany hostage.
Next vignette is the witch burnings shifting to the book burning. If you have a close look, at minute 4:45 you see a church man holding up a cross hugging a Nazi, symbolising the churches over all position to the horrific events happening during 1933-1945.
The birth scene. Germania is giving birth to dogs respectively "Leonberger" a breed preferred by Kings and Queens. The Breed almost went extinct during WW1 and WW2. A cardinal/ Constitutional judge (dressed in red) dressed in red helping a new Germany being born.
At minute 5:50 you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform.
Than the scenes/ time vignettes start shifting faster and faster, showing how many times, when circumstances becoming too extreme everything is falling apart and Germania ( dressed in knight's) armor is crying.
The outro is the piano version of the song "Sonne" which completes how we feel thinking of our past: a sense of sadness.
To sum it up. Germany has a long, wild, violent, unique history, because we as a state of today exist only since 1990. Yet the roots go back a very long time. "Young and yet so old" I hope that helped a little to understand the video and with that us Germans. We don't have a strong feeling of patriotism, but a strong sense of unity.

Some people criticised Rammstein for the video but I personally think history just isn't always positive. And not talking about the negative side won't make it go away. All of our history is important 😊

Deutschland by Rammstein and the music video have incredibly deep meanings and a lot of layers with regards to symbolism , imagery, historical and references and literary references. As well in relation to things which happend in the passed as in relation to Zeitgeist.
The first layer is the obvious: a song about something/someone who isgood and bad and you do not know if you shall love or condemn-
The second layer are the historical references from the roman times to the presents and even further to the possible future.
The third layer is the usage of words, sayings and idioms (e.g. the prefix „über“ or „wer hoch steigt der wird tief fallen“.
The fourth layer are these little subtle hints they make like:
- the actress representing Germania is black (the german flag is black, red and gold) not mentioning all the other hints made by choosing a black woman
- Germania wearing a patch on her right eye during the Nazi regime
- the different symbols on the chests on the ones to be executed representing not only the jewish but all groups doomed to be eliminated by the Nazis
- the band members beeing the prisoners AND the guards
- and so much more
The fith layer are the references to Zeitgeist and literature like for example how Germania the personification was portrayed through the centuries.
And if you are a musician (and I am not) Iam sure you would find a sixth layer.

The dogs might represent two things.
First the puppies look like Leonberger, a german dog breed that almost got extinct twice in history (after the world wars). Germany has a very old history, but as a unified country was quite young. After the world wars there was a risk of getting torn apart into the different cultural areas (thats what france wanted planned), which would made the unified german identification go extinct too.
The second connection lies between the puppies and the other dogs seen in the video. While the black woman represent Germania, the dogs often represent the people (been hold on a leash, fucked from the GDR politburo, etc. You can see that the dogs in the video experienced some crazy shit. But the newborn puppies are pure and have a change to find their place in the world in a different way as their ancestors.

The lyrics of Rammstein songs are often hard to translate, because Till (lead singer and songwriter) uses an old poetic German language for the lyrics, maybe for some people it's like reading Shakespeare. And the lyrics always have a twist or several meanings, that's the reason why so many people hate Rammstein, they just don't understand the meaning of the lyrics!!!
As I read in the comments, most did not recognize the difference between "über allen" as sung and "über alles" as in the german anthem. Rammstein meant Deutschland is covering everybody and not above all. So it means a threat. Rammstein is strongly playing with all german stereotypes and fears (black Germania!) particulary by using a very expressive german language , extremly emphasizing the R. No German is talking this way. Similary to american rockbands shocking people with satanism and so on. It is an impressive show. Has something for everybody. For haters and lovers too.

I thought it was a "easteregg" regarding the national anthem. A sideswipe at germany changing the anthem because of the nazis.
I'm pretty sure that they were legally obliged to NOT sing the original words of the nazi german anthem - keep in mind that this part is legally forbidden, hence Rammstein had to change the wording because of that.
"Über allen" (above everyone) could also mean how Germany was willing to sacrifice its own people for "greater" ends - which is how I interpreted it. It's part of the love-hate-relationship that the song and video are about.
Emphasized R is actually spoken in the south germanic dialects but yes, it is on the decline. You will almost never hear it outside of bavaria and even rarer from young people
This song is about the heart and soul of Germany. That's what ist feels like to be german. The video is a masterpiece.

If you wan't to watch another Rammstei song, i can recommend "Zeit". The music video also has some very intense visuals and the song itself is great as well.
Just as a note. The music in the credits is Rammsteins "Sonne" as Piano version. "Sonne" is also a great song with a great video.

I have seen many reactions to this, and what sets you apart is just how much smarter you are than most other reactors. You are interested and excited to learn and understand, and you pick up on things and understand very quickly. I started with your german satire reactions, and really enjoyed how you were able to pick up on the cleverness in the details of the performances. This one is no different, and I really appreciate it a lot. It's so frustrating when reactors don't seem to get it, or worse, "understand" everything only through the lens of their own preconceptions. Especially with this piece, which is very dear to my heart. I say piece, because it's not just a song, or just a video, it's a work of art when put together.
You can say about their music whatever you like, but rammstein knows how to make a show
I am very glad that I found your reaction. As I am an old German guy unfortunately my English isn't good enough to tell you how much I enjoyed your thoughts and feelings. I would love to suggest more beautiful German songs to you but the first 30 songs which come to my mind are all from Rammstein. They truly created so many masterpieces over the time and most of them unknown to a bigger audiance. I myself fell in love with Rammstein only three years ago when I saw a reaction to "Du hast". I liked it instantly and tried another song and it was great too. And so was the next and the one after this. Today I have 40 favorite songs from RS. Thanks again for your great reaction.

Man, you can think about Rammstein what you want, but you have to know them and listen to some of theirs songs. They are legendary artists that's for sure.
You definitely need to see them live! Their show is absolutely MIND BLOWING! If you're not a fan of the band or their music, in the end of the show you become fan, I can guarantee! 🤘🤩

Till Lindeman is a symphonic baritone, an usual vocal style outside of opera. He studied with an opera teacher for a couple years, which he says he hated, but that training can be heard in his diction and incredible vocal control. His is the most stunning voice in rock music, imho.
As you have correctly recognized, it is a journey through the history of Germany. The red laser or the red thread, as we say in Germany, is just this thing that always runs through our history. Full of violence, love, passion and that's why we Germans often seem so reserved today. Because we are, of course, totally aware of our past and we know what it means when we rekindle our innermost core or let it flare up. That's just how we deal with our history. Thank you 😊

This is one of the best videos from Rammstein and at the same time one of the most difficult content to fully understand. The song is about Germany (Deutschland) and the band's feelings about their home country which has a rather violent history (not only in WW2). It is a kaleidoscope of scenes from 2000 years of German history (some more symbolic, others painfully accurate) and additionally some scenes that might happen in the future when archaeologists are searching for artefacts of German history.
As you already know, the woman is Germania, played by the German actress Ruby Commey. Germania is not a literal person, but was a personification of Germany for centuries. All other main roles are played by the six members of Rammstein.
The scene when the monks seem to eat Germania references to the Thirty Year's War (1618-1648), which started as a religious war. As a result of that war - masses of people starved or died by plagues. And the church took what little they had left to live on.

Even for me as a German guy there were some details that I was not aware of.
Also the lyrics are explained a bit and the assumed reason for Rammstein to come out with this video. And there is an explanation why the video caused some harsh reactions BEFORE it was fully published.
The synth is always part of Rammstein's music. The songs are not always this meaningful, but often have a hidden layer and a special way to use the German language.

It was a great pleasure to see your reaction. I recommend you: watch the official video "Du hast, live in Paris" then you will get an idea of what this band has to offer. They have a large, unwaveringly loyal fan base - all over the world.
There is so much to discover with Rammstein. Deep lyrics, great music, crazy live shows. To get started, I would recommend "Du hast live in Paris" because it has a little bit of everything, though there are more theatrical performances, more singing, crazier fireworks and more crowd participation, more badass action in other songs but this is a good entry to the world of Rammstein.

when i first watched Deutschland i was took aback by the amazing visuals and the music was soo iconic and different . It took a while for me to understand what the music video meant but the ending when "Sonne" started playing i started to cry for some reason . It was very bittersweet and melancholy feel to it . Btw the band members act in almost every one of their music videos themselves and they never had a line-up change. Each of them is equally involved in the band, they work as a democracy, they even distribute their earned money evenly (the front man gets the same as everyone else).

Great reaction. You are right, there is a lot in this song. For me, this is the best Rammstein song. And they have really good songs, like Zeit, for example. But this one just hits differently. You are right, it's a journey through Germany's history. Starting with the Romans, Middle Ages, where the monks feast on the flesh of Germania, living in excess while people suffer. The crusades. Witch burnings. All the way to the 20th century. They showed the witch burnings and book burnings of the Nazis in kind of the same scene. In the beginning the church and the Nazis were on pretty good terms. That's why they hugged in the video. Germania being blind on the right eye (eye-patch) meaning being blind to all the suffering that is caused during that time. And so on. The dogs are a German breed that nearly went extinct during WW2 if I remember correctly. Really a lot to unpack there, but over all a really violent and bloody and gruesome past our country has. Which is why many Germans have a kind of ambivalent relationship about patriotism. And that's shown in the song as well. "I can't give you my love". Because, well, we all learn about this stuff and can you really be proud of your country when you know all of that? You can be proud of some things or achievements or people, I guess. But of the country as a whole with that history? Ehhhh.... not so much, I guess. I, at least, don't feel comfortable doing so. And I think they showed this in a really great way in this song.

Mert, your analysis is so spot on! Well done! This song is actually a critical examination of german history. The melody from the end credits is from "Sonne". Most of their original videos are cinematographical master pieces. Have a look at "Zeit" (Time) or "Adieu"...
Definitely "Zeit", "Angst" and "Adieu", as well as "Radio" and "Mein Land", "Mein Herz brennt" (both versions) and then all the rest. For non visual music I also love "zeig dich" but it only makes sense to hear it with the lyric on.

You are the first reactor who caught the "Deutschland über alleN" wordplay that I know of. Impressive. The original reference is "über alles", alles ~> everything ( i.e. squabbles and other problems or even everything on earth), "allen"~> everyone. This small grammatic change poignantly shifts the context towards lives/beings in German, but is really had to catch for a non speaker (and the subtitles don't help this one). Kudos!
Deutschland über allem ... is a word play with regard to German national anthem (Deutschland, Deutschland über alles..... is the first verse of the German national anthem) . However it is not played today because of its dark connection to Nazi regime....

Rammstein live is even on a higher level. Till Lindemann, the singer, is also a trained pyrotechnic. So you can expect a lot of fire and fireworks in their live shows. ;)
Kudos - you picked up on quite a few things in there. Note that the vid is not a history of Germany, but rather highlights some aspects, which were very defining maybe not to what Germany *is*, but to how people may feel about it.
There are good analyses out there, on Utube the one by "three arrows" is the best I know. Still, it falls short. The references and cross-references are enormous, and sometimes only detectable in freeze-frame. My current count is at around 180 (!).
The Band worked for over a year on this, and I can only guess at the production budget. It is one of a kind, I know of no comparison.

Your reaction was really fun to watch, it seems like you really enjoyed it and you did pick up on a lot of the history of it. The most important things have been mentioned in other comments before, but I personally think it's also interesting to point out the different roles Germania has in this video - sometimes she is a participating character, like in Nazi uniform or in the DDR scenes, other times she is hold hostage or being eaten on - which really describes the role Germany played in those eras. Sometimes the country was passive, being exploited or held hostage, but sometimes Germany was very much in control, all the way to being an active oppressor of others. It's a long, colourful and conflicted history, and Rammstein really captured it so well.
Rammstein ist actually a pretty diverse band. Yes the majority of their work could be seen as Metal/ Industrial or Rock but they also do Piano/ classic pieces. Among some friends we call these a "piece of art" rather than a piece of music. Two examples for those are "Ohne Dich" and the more recent "Zeit". They are really interesting artists, the singer Till Lindemann obviously adding his own twist to the song with his stylized pronunciation

I am glad that you too were able to meet Rammstein. A very special band with very special members who, this year, have been together for 30 years. The music has a lot of depth and the lyrics are truly works of art! Many of their texts have multiple meanings, so make sure you have English subtitles when you watch the videos. "über alles" is from the old national anthem
"über allen" literally means the same but plays with the old national anthem part a lot, bc all german have a negative trigger in them when hearing "über alles"
When first hearing it all germans have been scared for a short moment but release afterwards as its not the same term. But it plays with the emotions heavily

And the thing about the monks is that the church looked the other way when it came to crimes and even helped in some cases
the beginning in ancient germania is the battle of teutoburg forrest lead by Herman. You could argue this was the first time most germanic tribes united for a common goal instead of the usual fighting each other more than outside invaders that was common (and a reason rome was able to get so deep into germanic territory as tribal leaders would side with the romans against their neighbours)
Some consider this the start of germany but the tribal thing would still go on for about 800 years after this event until charlemagne the great really unified the germanic tribes into one nation - which after his death split into france and germany, so technicly his son started a nationalidentity of germany as one nation but the structures would still be very territorial and regional until Austria took over and introduced an actual nationwide government, which Napoleon destroyed and Bismarck rebuilt.
However the "propper" germany we know and germans consider themselves a part of didnt start until the fall of the berlin wall in 1989. Hence the phrase "so young and yet so old" in the song. Germany could be seen 2 milennia old or just 3 decades. Similiar Austria always viewed itself as a part of germany until roughly 1950 when a real austrian national identity formed.
To understand it better - bavaria are closer related to austria in language and culture than to berlin, some northern states are more related to denmark and the netherlands than to say saxony which is culturally more aligned with poland, and west germany shares a lot with france meanwhile the balck forrest region is more tied to switzerland culturally and language wise. So germans being vastly different from each other was always the case since 2000 years ago

Hello from KL! I enjoyed watching this reaction - it's a monster of a song, and the video is outstanding. Every detail is significant - the words 'Deutschland' and 'Ende' seem to be written in Fraktur, a font that was used then banned by the Nazis. And the change from the original 'uber alles' to 'uber allen' is an enormous change in the nuance, stressing the nationalistic nature of the phrase.
Another legendary industrial metal band from Germany is Die Krupps - 'Robosapien' would be a good place to start with them. I got to see them live a few years ago and it was an incredible show, so much energy and power. Now if only I can get to see Rammstein sometime.

the synths of this masterpiece are a tribute to *anne clark* (esp. her song "our darkness") - btw a relatively underrated _british_ musician. and _germans_ giving credit to a _british_ 'electronic pioneer' - like anne clark - is really something. i mean yes, brits and americans dominated the international music scene for decades, but when it comes to _electronic_ music (esp. the pioneers) germans (and other german speaking communities) are quite likely to point out 'their own' achievements (or at least refer to other 'non-anglo-saxons' like belgians, dutchies, frenchies or spaniards). rammstein - as 'older' _germans_ - having the balls to refer to an _'anglo-saxon'_ pioneer (esp. in a song called 'deutschland') is _way deeper_ than probably many non-germans (and also a bunch of younger germans, who didn't live through 'those days') are likely to understand.

Yes, Rammstein has been criticised and even been accused of being neo nazi, but I guess mainly by people who dont bother trying to understand what they see and hear.
Another interesting video of them is a live concert appearance in Paris, with their song "Du hast" - which can mean "you hate" as well as "you have". Also very bombastic in its execution, but of course different to a production of a film, like in "Deutschland".
"Deutschland über allen" was (in a different form) part of the german hymn. The first verse of the german hymn used to start with "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles". It was later removed because it was seen at too nationalistic.
