Now you got to Böhmermann ☺ - he’s famous for telling a poem about the Turkish president (Schmähkritik) that was actually illegal slander (that’s the rough translation of Schmähkritik), but only exactly until the Turkish president filed a complaint about it. Once that happened, the poem was pulled into the context of "what you’re not allowed to say", which turned it into legal satire. Böhmermann then won in court but was forbidden from ever telling that poem again in public, because he’d never be able to create the same context again.

@@Therawpy Yes, and that was hilarious, because he did it as an example of what is *illegal* to say in Germany and if Erdogan had not filed a complaint, Böhmermann could have actually lost in court. But after Erdogan filed that complaint, the poem was in such a strong satirical context, that Erdogan lost in court.

Böhmermanns poem/song stepped into the realm of slightly abusive criticism. Since abusive polititians usually lack any sense of humor - or the ability to self- reflect.....Mr. Ergoghan - subject to Böhmermann' s song - lost it and thus made a complete fool of himself.

Jan Böhmermann is certainly controversial. Some say he goes too far every now and then, and there have been various court cases against him in the past. But his show is not only a comedy show, it also deals with serious issues, in a sarcastic way, but actually draws attention to real problems and grievances and it has often brought politics and authorities to put an end to these grievances. As far as this segment is concerned, you could also compare him to John Oliver (Last Week Tonight). I have mixed feelings about him, but a few of his contributions are really worth watching, as they are really well researched (real journalism) and because they are presented in an extremely funny way, so that the viewer actually learns something about the background and receives true facts, without being bored for a single second.
And yes, he was sued by the Turkish president because I think he called him a goat f**ker and there was a law in Germany that forbade to insult the head of state of another country and thanks to the "Jan Böhmermann Affair" this law was in fact abolished afterwards because it was considered to no longer be contemporary, as this law had its origin in the German Empire (was already found in the law of 1871) and originally revolved around libel of majesty (i.e. the prohibition to insult kings and emperors of other nations). So his comedy actually had a long lasting effect and caused even a law to be changed, IMO for the better.

Jan Böhmermann is a highly controversial entertainer, germans either love him or hate him. The quality of his show is top notch, wether you agree or disagree on topics. He does his research on the topics.
Personally i like the geopoliticals shows of him the most, very educational and entertaining. It's hit or miss with him for me, sometimes he has three four banger topics in a row then some rather boring ones. Personal preference i'd say.

I love him - except for the episode about trans. Bc he didn't do his research there. The study he referred to as the evidence that there are more than two sexes says exactly the opposite - as the author of the study said a lot of times already. And he also does not differentiate between trans and non-binary (but to be fair - no one does these days. Even tho both groups have totally different needs and backgroundstories and some demands by non-binary people are indeed harmful to trans people (well.. just as long as we declare and treat both as trans people tho. If people would differentiate, their demands would be no problem...)).

Neo Magazin Royale used to be extremely juvenile and wildly hit-or-miss. It can still be very juvenile, but now it is sharply aimed satire sometimes paired with honestly impressive investigative journalism. A specialty of theirs is making songs (with music videos!) on the topic of the show, which doesn't _always_ happen, but it's usually spectacular when it does.

Jan Böhmermann is usually a lot more harsh than the other programs in Germany. The way he speaks is hard to translate, because he often does sort of a commentary on himself during his monologues - you might have noticed that he talks much faster than the subtitles, so some humor gets lost in the little quips.
And the show also does investigative work, so they are a mixture of satire and original journalism.

It's called "Der Eierwurf von Halle" (The Egg Throw of Halle) and it's actually really good musically and funny and explores the political and social issues of the time through a gay romance between one of Kohl's (West-German, conservative) bodyguards and one of the (East-German, leftist) activists 😄 Yeah it's wild and campy, there are people in egg costumes singing and dancing at some point, but it's all done very intentionally and tongue in cheek and it's so so good.

National pride was discouraged, because we know into what a populist xenophobe dickhole can twist that. (Trump and MAGA, case and point.) Subsequently i never really formed a sense of national identity or pride, which admittedly has pros and cons. "Ein nettes Wort wenn parat, ein ernstes wenn nötig" makes for a good friend, ally and person in general. I want no pat on the back when i'm oblivious to some senseless cruelty.
In the realm of satire i tend to follow up a "holy shit, did he really just say that?" with a "thank fuck, some people take public discourse where politicians won't", because if a veneer of civility is used as cover to legitimize people's bigotry, i don't just want no part of it, it needs to go. If niceties stand in the way of getting to the heart of things, break their legs.

If it comes to the pinnacle of satire content from germany in the recent 10 years, many Böhmermann pieces are up there as the very best and also sometimes most controversial.

I think the peak was when he was making fun of the twitch 'cam girls' and 'pool streams' and brought Lara Loft as an example, calling her a 'sex masott'. While at that time Lara was not streaming regularly due to her fulltime job as a voice actress, she was mostly gaming and singing in her streams and was rather loved by the twitch community. People shitstormed Jan to the point that he apologized in his following podcast about that.

All in all, Biden has passed a lot of surprisingly meaningful legislation - in sum, he actually managed to accomplish more than Obama, so far. Unfortunately, they are really really bad at PR, so nobody will ever find out, and it won't help him in the next election. I think the biggest difference between the dutch version of this clip and the other nation's versions, is that the dutch version was specifically made for the dutch audience (not knowing that it would start a trend).
So the jokes are maybe a little bit more inside jokes and references made to persons for example arent that well known abroad.
All the sequels from the other countries were made for both the domestic audience and international audience, so they are probably lacking those very specific jokes only a native would understand.
Although no one does wall jokes better than Germany of course 😅

Jan Böhmermann developed into one of the best known comedians and journalists in Germany.
His humor is often harsh, sometimes stretching legal bounds or simply breaking them. He has had a shit ton legal problems because of things he said.
But he is someone with an uncanny sense for things that go wrong in Germany and has a team that does thorough research. That's why some groups fear him. There are plenty of people that fell because of things he brought up to the public. And it's not only politicians but celebrities, companies, media etc.
And some revelations even killed careers.

Jan Böhmermann is definitely a notch up in any way. I find it really much better than the "heute show". Even the band "Tanzorchester Ehrenfeld" playing in the show, is great. Böhmermann was indeed in some international incidents and massively pissed off Erdogan.. It became quite an incident because Erdogan demanded to lock him away and had to learn that satire is no problem in democracies. There was also an incident with Varufakis where he counterfeited a video with Varufakis showing the finger to Europe to see what the media would make out of it. Whether there is any research or check done or so, before they freak out. He is highly media critical. He is also polarising, but his stuff is all very well-written and researched.

Jan Böhmermann is essentially the spearhead of satire in Germany. I've recommended him in countless comments before, and finally, you've found him. Regarding the name: The show used to be called "Neo Magazin Royal" because it aired on the ZDF Neo channel, which is a sub-channel of the ZDF network. Today, the show is called "ZDF Magazin Royal" because it airs on the main ZDF channel, every Friday.
Now, here's the big secret of German satire: We have public broadcasting channels in Germany, which are state-owned. However, the government has no influence over the content shown on these channels. They are funded through a separate tax (too complicated to explain here). These channels serve as counterparts to private and premium channels. That's why satirists are allowed to do pretty much whatever they want within the bounds of German law. There's no media mogul who can do anything about it, no company that can make demands, and no one who can exert any kind of influence. That's why our satire is the way it is, simply because no one throws obstacles in its way. Of course, the general public complains constantly about Jan Böhmermann, especially when he touches on sensitive topics. He's particularly bombarded from the right side of the political spectrum, while for the left, he's a figurehead.
Here are a few recommendations, starring NMR (Neo Magazin Royal) or ZMR (ZDF Magazin Royal). Named by the names you can find on RUclips:
    (Songs:)
    - Jan Böhmermann - "Licht an! Licht an!" | NEO MAGAZIN ROYALE - ZDFneo
    - BE DEUTSCH! [Achtung! Germans on the rise!] | NEO MAGAZIN ROYALE mit Jan Böhmermann - ZDFneo
    - Wir sind Versandsoldaten - Jan Böhmermann & der Chor der Scheinselbstständigen | NEO MAGAZIN ROYALE
    - POL1Z1STENS0HN a.k.a. Jan Böhmermann - Ich hab Polizei (Official Video) | NEO MAGAZIN ROYALE ZDFneo
(Shows that you will always remember)
    - Gut gemeint, schlecht umgesetzt: Das Problem mit deutscher Erinnerungskultur | ZDF Magazin Royale
    - Varoufakis and the fake finger #varoufake | NEO MAGAZIN ROYALE mit Jan Böhmermann - ZDFneo
    - Eier aus Stahl: Max Giesinger und die deutsche Industriemusik | NEO MAGAZIN ROYALE
    - Wer in Deutschland gegen trans Menschen hetzt | ZDF Magazin Royale
    - Wahlen in Ungarn - die letzte Chance für die Demokratie | ZDF Magazin Royale
There are a lot of VERY GOOD shows from ZMR (NMR). But to your disadvantage, Jan often deals with domestic German topics. You would have to be in the know to understand the jokes and references. In the "Germany First" video alone, the Lombardis were featured, and they had been dissected by the show a week before. That's why I chose the ones that can be understood without much context.

"wichser" is pretty much synonymous to "asshole". "wanker" obviously also describes a unlikable person, but usually has the connotation that the person is also kinda dumb or foolish, which is not really the case for a "wichser".

Böhmermann is just the best, because people either hate or love him, but no one doesn´t have an opinion about him.

The trick with German satire is that if a non German does it it's offensive but when a German does it it's the funniest thing you have ever seen

Biden compared with Trump... That's a tough one. For starters I would say that Biden is more intelligent, not insane, no pathological liar (sure all politicians lie, but come on...), less dangerous, no racist, no anti democrat, no criminal and does not behave like a stubborn child compared to Trump. So yeah, you could say that most Germans look more favourably on Biden.

Jan Böhmermann is razor sharp and also did some epic undercover satire actions - for me, the best and most relevant, of these days👌🏼

If you want to compare Trump and Biden look at their policies and what they have achieved two years in. Biden is doing far better, and the major reason is that he choose competent people. So don't worry too much about him, even if you have troubles understanding him when his stutter catches up with him.

As someone from The Netherlands I like the OG Dutch version the best of course, but this one was brilliant too!
