Just now seeing this. This was one of the most thorough and helpful reviews I've seen of any car. My 2014 E250 is about to hit 112,000 miles. It still feels, drives, and sounds like the day I first bought it new. I know it was only made for two years because of VW's dieselgate, but this may go down as one of the best E class sedans made. Mine has been flawless, and for the U.S. market the heavy torque emphasis is ideal. I spent 13 years in Germany and wouldn't pursue this car there, but here in the U.S. it's perfect. Still looks gorgeous 10 years later too. Nothing has ever broken or gone wrong on it.
I’ve also got a 2014 E250, and mine has crossed 150,000 miles! I’ve only had to fix a little plastic container containing coolant fluid, but nothing else has gone wrong. It’s an amazing car that seems bulletproof.
My boss currently owns a 2014 e250 as well, bought it 3 years ago and has put over 80,000 miles on it since, currently sitting at 150k+ miles and it hasn’t skipped a beat! I believe an o2 sensor and a blind spot monitoring sensor are the only things that went on it. Very solid and powerful cars that ride like glass. Hold onto yours they’re a diamond in the rough for sure!
MB E250 Bluetec Hi, The E250 is an excellent vehicle. The E250 Bluetec 4Matic is everything the E350 is with one important difference : Twice (2X) the fuel mileage, nearly a 900+ mile range at 50+ MPG. I just purchased an E250 4Matic and drove it up and down the Rockies from Salt Lake City Utah to Colorado Springs, Colorado, averaging 51 MPG. And yes, I do have pictures to prove it. Best, David
I drive one of these almost every day and I get 36 MPG in typical mixed driving. On the highway 47 MPG is the best that I've achieved on a 280 mile road trip, most of it at 60 MPH. And that car has all-wheel-drive.
I'm very much impressed by this review! Alex is one of the few, who can deliver a good amount of knowledge, without disappointing the audience. Thanks, man!
Hood ornaments, descended from radiator caps, are an anachronism. But there's something cool about having that gun sight out there as you cruise down the highway. My '62 Lincoln had one actually similar to the Mercedes except rectangular. Of course, it was a couple of feet farther away.
The W202 is the best. I've got one in silver. 1996 C200 Classic. I recently came across a W202 in green. Looks amazing in green. Mercedes-Benz should again qualify demand for W202 lines.
I do like coming across these amazing reviews after so many years...one of the few remaining joys of RUclips. I run these older cars for my tour business in Ireland and they are far superior to the bland, boring newer versions. Thank you for making these films about great cars and the companies who have sadly lost their way.
Excellent review Alex! My dad has the 2013 ML 350 Bluetec. Our first entry into the diesel market and we love it! 455 lbs ft of torque. Would only buy diesel going forward and highly recommend mercedes-benz bluete/diesel products.
Thank you for the wonderful review I am very interested in picking up a 2014 E250 in 2019! My last Mercedes was a S430 that I kept for 14 years and put on 180,000 miles with no mechanical parts changed. I only use mobile one full synthetic oil in my engine ! My engine had The same smog Emissions as a brand new Mercedes after 180,000 miles. My 66 Mustang was such a piece of junk that it taught me to be a mechanic. Everything was falling apart after 35,000 miles! Then stupid me bought a Ford expedition and the 4 Wheel Dr. transmission went out after 30,000 miles. Ford motors built junk in 1966 and then when I bought my expedition in 1997 they still make junk. Fix Or Repair Daily
I'm glad that Traditional American Vehicles are coming back & on top. Notice how John Hennesey also uses Cadillac for his High Performance engines because there is a lot of room for him to work with & not so w/ the Foreign models.
Nice review Alex. I have had the chance to test drive the GLK 250 Bluetec, with the identical running gear. It was an excellent in traffic vehicle, effortless in acceleration and quiet. The gear lever stalk is a great space optimization, un-cluttering the tunnel between driver and passenger. That GLK is also the price champion for diesel Mercedes in North America. Keep day-dreaming about a European Delivery.
Definitely the best review I have either read or listened. I have enjoyed my 2014 E250 for the past 18 months. Mileage is better than that observed by CU. Sport version is not as smooth as luxury.
@@ElijahsAba I still have it, and I get low 30s in town and 40s on the highway. Same brakes for over 95,000 miles. Blower motor replaced under warranty. Did have some fuel hardware issue that cost me $1500, but now Mercedes has to pay me $3,000 for diesel-gate issue. Had the care re-worked for that issue, but no noticeable difference in performance or mileage. Let's hope the twin turbos keep working.
I miss the W212 E-Class. And Mercedes diesels as well. The W212 2015 E250 4MATIC is a perfect car. I would get this and a 2015/16 X166 GL350 4MATIC together. Perfect match.
I really enjoy your reviews, Alex! Extremely informative and chocked full of details that one would want to know as a potential buyer. Keep up the great work!
Alex, excellent review. Thanks. I've been debating which car to replace my 1996 E320 (298K miles) which I bought new. I've found my next car. :). Based on your review, it's seems to have everything I would enjoy in my next car. Keep up the great reviews.
Simply impressed with your very comprehensive review. I've been looking at the 2014 or 2015 BMW 328 Diesel, but this E250 Diesel judging by our reviews is by far a lot better car and much larger as well. Thank you for your review. Hands down, you're the best. I WOULD WISH THAT YOU DO REVIEWS FOR GUNS AS WELL.
Great review. I have been driving one of these, and you are correct on every point regarding the plusses and minuses of a Diesel engine. I started missing going to the gas station almost!
Merc has always had a diesel option on the E-class. I had a 2005 CDI and I believe that option has been around continuously since the old 1980's diesel options.
MB has had diesel options in the USA for some time but in general they brought their larger diesels because they didn't think Americans would accept the lower output engines.
Thanks! So what you are saying is the new Bluetec diesel is a completely different platform than the CDI I had in 2005? Do you know how long they have been making the BlueTec?
A excellent review! Nice explanation of the features and performance and safety benefits. And I can almost feel the comparison's with your unbiased approach. I'm not too happy with the new styling...looks a little too cut down. I like my 2008 E350 4 matic gas styling better. But distronic, lane assist and blind side sensors are great features worth having.
In EU, this engine had in 2014, 204 hp now in 2015 it has 211 hp. Eco button will reduce engine power and the AC system, Auto start & stop is disabled from somewhere else.
And now in 2018, Mercedes has sadly yanked all diesel sales from the US market. I wish that US buyers realized the benefits of diesel; as well as I wish that DieselGate never happened.
lol ya do know that emissions is bullshit right? Container ships emit 3x more air pollutants than all the cars in the world combined, and there are less than a thousand container ships in the world. Car emissions is just there to control smog buildup in cities, not protect the enviornment lol. Also, american carmakers constantly lobby congress to keep diesel emission laws high because their technology is far behind that of european manufacturers.
I'm trying to find a E250 WITH ventilated seats, i went through 80-90 ads on autotrader and NONE have ventilated seats. I'm wondering if any E250s actually came with that...
Hi Alex. Amazing review as always. Could you please also compare luxury SUVs? like Merc ML, BMW X5, Lexus GX, and some others you would deem fit. On a separate note: safety, reliability and total cost of ownership wise, what brand would you suggest among the three Japanese and the three German brands- 60K range.
I should have a BMW X5 soon so I'll see what I can do. Well, that's a tricky question. In general Lexus is going to be the loest cost to own in that bunch. There has been plenty of improvement among the Europeans but in general Mercedes and BMW have posted better long term reliability numbers and TCO vs Audi. I would recommend something like Edmund's TCO calculator to compare specific models as they have an entire department of folks crunching those numbers.
Alex on Autos Hey Alex! Fantastic review! Own E350 (2012) and love it. Actually if you check reliability (from ADAC, TUV) Audis, in general, are more reliable than MB and way more reliable than BMW. Even though the E-Series is great, C-, B-, A-, and ML- have had reliability issues over the years.
Alex: very comprehensive review. I heard you mention by way of comparisons the Audi and BMW diesels. Understood and expected. But i didn't hear (or missed it) any comparison discussion on the new north American B7 Passat TDI?
I can't in all honesty do too much comparing between the E250 and the Passat TDI, they are really very different cars and cross-shopping is essentially zero.
I feel the badge on the front is too small. Mercedes needs to make the badge as large as a the whole front grille because at the moment you can only see the badge from 200 metres away, we need to see it from outer space.....
thats because behind that badge they have mounted the DistronicPlus Radar, so its transparent as well. And they need it to mantain it through the whole line so it doesnt look akward..
What I wish you would add.. is the worrisome reliability of the W212 which you are reviewing… JD places it in the same line in reliability or lack thereof with the Mini cooper (as an example), 2.5/5 stars which is bottom of the list. 1. When maintenance of the W212 is so outrageously priced, 2. When a modest 4 cylinder with 240hp output has such a high MSRP… 3. When the body is so much more prone to rust compared to the much more reliable BMW 5 series or Lexus competitors… Then - I would say … you could have spent more time discussing weighing the option of getting into one of these or not, AND of not owning one outside of an extended warranty. These are the main topics to consider imo. What are your thoughts Alex? Or has MB been overly nice with you during your stay ….
This video review was published in 2014 when NONE of the long-term reliability information you had mentioned was available at that time. Turbo diesel 4-cylinder engines don't have much horsepower but they have lots of low-end torque... that's why people buy them... these driveability characteristics is not unique to Mercedes Benz. Anyone knows that owning a German luxury car past its warranty expiration date is a big gamble. These cars are not for the faint of heart (or pocketbook).
I wonder why Americans stereotype diesel, hybrids and electric cars. Just because they are small engines or electric power, it doesn't mean it lacks power compared to conventional petrol vehicles.
Yeah, the 2015 C just got a complete remodel/redesign that Mercedes does every 7 years, which is why it looks much more impressive. The E class is due for one in a few years and no doubt will look much more modern/better then.
The interior in this e250 bluetec doesn't even hold a candle to the Audi A6 3.0 tdi interior. Audi has a bigger motor with more power better mpg and is more fun to drive. The A6 would blow the doors off this car.
Alex does this E250 and all other recent sedan comes standard with fog lights? I've notice that there's a black plastic cover where the fog lights usually would go. Fog lights used to come standard.
it is more of a luxury to have a column shift more room in the middle fore hoes or cup holders, at least one car company should do this, or make it an option
Had a question but not related to the excellent review on that E250 Mercedes. That was on purchasing of a GM product, namely the new Silverado 1500, after this recent GM recall debacle! Would you recommend GM or going to another manufacture -- a little apprehensive of GM right now although previously owned '08 Tahoe w/no problems!
This is going to sound like a bit of a cop-out but it's true. While I think that the GM recall SNAFU is a black eye for a company trying to get back on track, it really isn't that unusual. There are recalls all the time and most of the big boys get nailed for something sooner or later. That being said, I could see being apprehensive over this sort of thing. I do like the new Silverado (although I think I'm more of a RAM guy myself). If you need the towing or payload capacity there really isn't another option. My guy reaction is: you should buy what you like and what speaks to you because regardless of a recall you'll likely be happier in the long run. Do give that RAM 1500 EcoDiesel a try however...
Alex has a hard-on for this Mercedes. I've seen a lot of these long reviews and this time he is biased towards this car. Every rating, estimation is overly generous. Almost 400 foot pounds of torque @14:57(369 is close to 400?), average sized trunk is 9/10? etc....
In California, diesel is about $0.40 more per gallon than regular unleaded and about $0.10 more per gallon than premium unleaded. The price varies by state however and in some locations diesel is the same or slightly cheaper. This is despite the fact that taxes are in general lower on diesel than gasoline. Part of this is because there is lower diesel consumption but the other part is that refineries in the US are designed to produce more gasoline than diesel in their refinement process so there's simply less diesel around.
One more thing: can you rate interior for comfort on the same lines you rate trunk? Not necessarily prettiness, but comfort. The data about cabin noise is also valuable, any easy way to get access to those numbers?
That sounds like a good idea. I'll try to incorporate x/10 rankings by section in future videos. It'll take a few weeks to see that since my video reviews are always a few weeks behind the actual car testing week. I'm working on getting charts and tables with that information together on alexonautos.com so expect that in about a month when my web developer launches the new site.
Nice review as usual, Finally they installed the info pad to the dashboard and it does not look as cheap as it looked before, However I still hate the Mercedes interior and I think they are truly lacking to make quality, tech advanced and nice looking interiors. From Mercedes C class to the G class interior, they all look the same. So boring, They truly need to learn from Lexus or Infiniti. What I dislike the most is the center dashboard. So many not useful buttons, and whats up with the chrome looking buttons. They look to cheap. Mercedes I am keep asking, please update the damn interior and you all behind every luxury car makers. Even Ford fusion interior looks way better than this mercedes.
Have you been in the latest fusion and the latest E-Class? I am assuming not. The fusion while being nice does not compare to the E-Class. The E-Class uses a lot of premium materials and the feel is totally different. I have experienced both the Fusion and the E-Class and the Fusion cannot compare in terms of design or quality.

i like the interior of the merc e more than the audi a6 but thats just my opinion
Excellent review.
A real review !!!
Very good review.
Solid review. Thank you.
About to get a 2014 of this. :D
Hey Alex great review! Are you getting in a BMW 328d to review anytime soon?
I hope so
Alex does this E250 and all other recent sedan comes standard with fog lights? I've notice that there's a black plastic cover where the fog lights usually would go. Fog lights used to come standard.
Nice review :)
PLEASE keep making videos. Fantastic review.
I thought your going to introduce the front grille and headlights ? Lol
excellent review
it is more of a luxury to have a column shift more room in the middle fore hoes or cup holders, at least one car company should do this, or make it an option
i really hate the center dash with the forward/back button area, number pad and the shiny buttons under them.
Hey Alex could u do a review on the Kia forte 5 door 2 litre engine or the Hyundai sonata eco or 2.4 litre engine please
I thought the video was about the e250 not the eclass in general...
Thanks for the reply...and that Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is attractive and being considered.
Moral of the story is......... Buy a Cadillac????? You're nuts!!!
Alex has a hard-on for this Mercedes. I've seen a lot of these long reviews and this time he is biased towards this car. Every rating, estimation is overly generous. Almost 400 foot pounds of torque @14:57(369 is close to 400?), average sized trunk is 9/10? etc....
that trunk is small
Does Diesel cost more than Gasoline in the US? How big is the difference in price anyway there?
In California, diesel is about $0.40 more per gallon than regular unleaded and about $0.10 more per gallon than premium unleaded. The price varies by state however and in some locations diesel is the same or slightly cheaper. This is despite the fact that taxes are in general lower on diesel than gasoline. Part of this is because there is lower diesel consumption but the other part is that refineries in the US are designed to produce more gasoline than diesel in their refinement process so there's simply less diesel around.
Ok, thanks. Mine was just curiosity ;)
Great video
what a wonderful place! which town/state was that?
is this model available with a manual gearbox ?
One more thing: can you rate interior for comfort on the same lines you rate trunk? Not necessarily prettiness, but comfort.
The data about cabin noise is also valuable, any easy way to get access to those numbers?
That sounds like a good idea. I'll try to incorporate x/10 rankings by section in future videos. It'll take a few weeks to see that since my video reviews are always a few weeks behind the actual car testing week.
I'm working on getting charts and tables with that information together on alexonautos.com so expect that in about a month when my web developer launches the new site.
Alex on Autos Thanks a ton Alex. Much appreciated!
Alex, is the wagon still only offered with gasoline engine? It would be a natural fit for a diesel for a family wagon.
That is my understanding, I'm not totally sure why however.
There are some articles online pointing to an E250 Bluetec wagon being available this Fall, which I'm hoping is true.
Alex, do the butterfly headrests come outfitted with dynamic seat option only?
If I read this right, yes.
Could you do a review of Audi A6 3.0 TDI please??
Alex could you contact mercedes to review the GL?
I'll see what I can do. Mercedes doesn't have many vehicles available to me and the CLA and GLK are a bit higher on the list from viewer requests.
