Kingdom Hearts Bending Over Backwards to Avoid the K Word

- Sometimes Kingdom Hearts avoids saying "kill" like the plague and other times it just doesn't care. I just found it interesting.
Many thanks to The Wayfinder Project and KH Database for the cutscenes!
As someone who has never played Kingdom Hearts, it is honestly the absolute funniest thing ever to see sexy anime men with the most serious look on their face talking to american Disney characters about death and sorrow. I genuinely wonder how KH fans feel when they talk about how awesome it is and then someone just sees the wrong cutscene as their first exposure to the series. Im sure you guys love it all the same, but I love Centaurworld and I'm super quick to disown that show during certain scenes, so I sort of wonder if that applies here.
It definitely does!
With Kingdom Hearts, context is everything because physical objects ( including a stick of ice cream and a necklace) are often used as metaphors for conceptual things such as friendship and unity, so sometimes someone will be talking about ice cream or managing to not lose a necklace and it will actually be a heartbreaking tragedy or heartwarming moment but someone just coming in on the end of the scene will think it's ridiculous. The series is pretty much the textbook definition of "you had to have been there". 😅
@@edgeofultima7483 Oh, that makes it even funnier, I feel bad for you guys LMAO
To be honest after being irony poisoned in what media I consumed, binging Kingdom Hearts completely and seeing a confident sincere work of fiction despite how absurd it is makes me love it all the same
It's like Nomura was given thr budget to realize these childhood fantasies into reality and tbh, the world is better for it. I think the Disney worlds make fantastic landscapes for this series, absurd enough as it is
Also helps that..honestly a lot of the badass have their silly or goofy sides too, the Organization members minus Xemnas or Saix are real kahoots in terms of how they taunt or engage the player (having the 2nd in command be a surfer dude is..weirdly cool? Lol, especially with what's revealed about him in KH3 about this being a total front)
Imagine your loved one has died and you tell everyone by saying "ey yo jimmy has fallen, his scent is gone"
"I'm sorry... Your wife was struck down in a car accident."
"Ma'am? We found the responsible for deep-sixing you husband."

@@MegaManXPoweredUp I am wheezing
My favorite scene, regarding this scenario, is with Hades in Dark Road.
When Xehanort tells him they're looking for someone who "disappeared," Hades straight up said, "'Disappeared?' Ohhh, right. Mortals--always have to sugarcoat everything. Well, personally, I prefer 'dead.'"
I think the only way death really works in the kh universe is if your body and heart die at the same time, as sora is a special case he didn't die, but was booted from his reality. And the organization 13 as it was in chain of memories and kh2 never really existed in the same way as complete people so saying die wouldn't really make alot of sense.
@@10tailedbijuu I think that's pretty much confirmed. In any case, there's actually been a lot of death in the KH universe, a literal war of body counts. The Final world showcases people who perished, but are tethered by lingering regrets, kind of like a purgatory, and we've seen it happen to wielders who perish alongside their Chirithies. The case I don't particularly understand is Strelitzia, but all I can do there is speculate and theorize based on breadcrumbs left by Nomura.
💀💀💀
that explains it all
"I am the lord of the DEAD!"
"Hmph. No wonder no one wants to die."
"choking the life out of" still sounds metal af tho
For sure!
"By eliminating your existence" is a pretty good alternative too.

It's so in character for Vanitas. Even if they COULD say "There you're gonna see me kill Terra and Aqua", it just wouldn't be in character of him.

He was snapped out of life
I love how nonchalantly the Evil Queen just says "kill her" in contrast to basically everyone else avoiding the word like the plague.
They're quoting an 80 year old movie with the original characters. I think it was okay for that one
I think it mostly works, but annihilate by Jack Sparrow was pretty weird XD

Deep-sixing does not sound like killing though, it sounds...gay
Im sorry, but Vanitus literally saying he's going to "choke the life out of Terra and Aqua" is straight up the darkest line delivery in probably the entire series, they can not say "kill" all they want, that there took the cake for me.
Vanitus is the type of sadistic sicko to think killing is the easy way to go.
It reminds me when execs at machinama forced their workers to stop saying rape or gay in videos, so some workers started saying the most abhorrent shit using tamer words in protest until they got their "naughty word license" reinstated

Jack saying annihalate is the only weird one but its so funny. Also choke the life out of someone is so much hardcore in a good way
That's what I thought! The others didn't feel so out of place
Yeah, I don’t know why, but Kingdom Hearts feels like a world where you can say someone is “struck down” and that’s just how you say they were killed. Maybe it fits the dramatic mood?
It’s funny cause it’s lifted from a real scene where he doesn’t say annihilate. Every other word is the same lol
meanwhile saix literally says he wants to watch you die lol
_As if_ that was the same as saying the word kill (i'm just joking as per the first 2 words in this sentence).
If you lose to Data Saix, he says, “Back to dust!” which is pretty cool ass way to get around the K Word rule.
Saix don't give a shit, he's crazy 💀
I feel like that line was snuck in. “I want to see you die fighting”, because you just barely hear him say it as a battle line.
Ven's "put an end to me" line should have been in here. He could have just asked his friends to "kill me" but he didn't.
I can't believe I forgot that one! It's one of the most important ones!
the original japanese was commonly fan translated as "erase me" irrc
I personally think the death works differently in their universe.
I like how avoiding “kill’ forces them to get creative. Though as no one stays dead forever in this series, having their corporeal forms “annihilated” temporarily actually makes sense.
Not entirely true. Eraqus hasn't been resurrected in any way. Coming back as a ghost for two minutes doesn't count.
By avoiding "kill" it makes the dialogue sound even more like a bad translation.
You basically can have 3 lives in this game : your normal one , a heartless one and if you were strong enough à nobody’s one. Sure you’ll probably never be what Ansem was as a heartless (I think he was the only one besides Sora and Terra who remained himself as a heartless, as we have never met the heartless of the Org 13) but as you and your nobody are struck down you will respawn 😂
Agreed, avoiding the word actually works a lot better in some of these
All the nobodies and heartless aren't actual dying, and the unversed were never really alive, so it makes sense with then
0:26 I love the ide that "kill" is somehow too much for kids but they expect them to understand "deplorable"
They just extending the word count to meet the word requirements
What does Kingdom Hearts and a college student writing an essay have in common?🤣

Okay, to be fair.
Saying "struck down" is a bit more funny for Eraqus when he's voiced by Mark Hamill and a certain other franchise he knows really loves that phrase-

"Too bad it's sunday, that Kingdom Hearts would have been filled tomorrow."
It’s weird hearing Jack say annihilate when pirates don’t normally say the k word instead saying:
- Davey Jones locker
- Sleeping with the fishes
- Walk the plank
- Run me through
- turn to fish chum
strike me timbers down
Considering that in the actual movie, Jack was already literally sent to Davy Jones' Locker, that line would fit so well I think.
Choke the life out of Terra and Aqua sounds like killing anyways. It is just adding more words to it. 😅
Sounds more visceral too!
And yet they have more of an impact than the word kill. Except for when Jack sparrow said it. That feels off
You're not wrong. They even got creative with some of them too!
For Jack, I'd have gone with "take me out", something more casual that better fits his pirate vocab.
I didn't even notice it when playing, not that I hear it here it sounds so goofy, but hilarious too😂😂
Personally, I would have kept the word "kill" just for that world, because they're pirates and it's a more realistic world. Also Sora and the gang watched Will get killed by Davy Jones later on
@@swishfish8858”some of you even tried to take me out, but you wanted to split the bill and I am not a cheap date”
I think they only really allow the k word if the "k"ing in general doesn't actually happen. When it does all of a sudden it's striking down and annihilating
Feel like Snow White's Queen really meant to kill her
@@Xiassen Snow White feels like an exception since she *did* technically die, but came back. Considering the temporary nature of her death, maybe they considered that fine
I think the difference between both is that instances of the word "kill" are used loosely as expression rather than actual instances of murder. Some of them might also be because they're accurate to the original Disney movies, so they get a pass. I noticed this in Union X as well, any Disney world story that involved death in some way would use the word "kill" whenever, but main story plot that happens in Daybreak Town uses "disappear" or anything similar.
Yeah, I definitely noticed the being accurate to the Disney movie thing during editing. Ironically, enough most of the characters that actually say the word kill are Disney characters with the only exception being Larxene. Although, the times that she and Donald say it are the less literal interpretations.
@@edgeofultima7483 Except for the Pirates of the Caribbean scene. They changed Jack's line from "four of you have tried to kill me in the past" to "four of you have tried to annihilate me in the past". It's especially jarring because that scene takes place in Davy Jones' Locker, a hellscape for those who have died after wronging Davy Jones in some way.
@thantus9315, your point about being accurate to the disney films is most obvious with the evil queen.
Then there's Dark Road, where Hades disregards the term, "disappeared" as mortals trying to sugarcoat everything, and says he pefers the term "dead." Lol
Sorry random but it's nice seeing a zero escape profile pic in the wild!
I can't believe I've never noticed this before! Though it makes me think of the chat feature in Union Cross where it wouldn't let you type the k word but it also stopped you from typing "skill" which was rather annoying.
For sure! I remember they also used to have a built-in censor for kh1 when you were naming the raft or your gummy ships and Birth by Sleep when they let you rename your finishers.
@edgeofultima7483 Ah, didn't know that either as I tended to just call the raft Excalibur and didn't bother changing the names of the finishers.
I also remember chatting to my party: "Whoops. Accidentally killed the boss", because they were all meant to get into the battle before I killed it. Union X' chat had other ideas though, so what everyone actually read was
"Whoops. Accidentally ****ed the boss"
Yeah, that definitely can't get interpreted in any other way. Thanks, chat filter
@kev1nno Yes that is unfortunate...
@@kev1nno they made it so much worse 😂
I mean, "annihilate" is a very cool substitute for--
"Four of you tried to annihilate me."
He would not say that ..
Would've worked as 'tried to off me' way better.
I read the title and my dumb ass thought "Kairi?"
cut to Roxas: "You're that girl he likes"
Namine in CoM: "the most important person to you, it's not me, it's Her"
I was thinking Kingdom 😂
Every kiss begins with K
I think for the most part it really makes the dialogue more colorful. Something you can never accuse KH of not being.
I love how Dark Road somewhat lampshades this, and of course frickin HADES is the one to do so.
Oh of course. Hades is the Lord of the Dead. He is not afraid to say the word "kill".
Most of the characters who die in this series do find a way back, even if only briefly. All the slain Nobodies and Heartless reunite into the original human. Hearts get preserved inside of other people. Resurrections, time travel, clones, etc.
Bro why is the music so calm when Vanitas says he wants to choke the life out of Terra and Ventus
Its playing Ventus' theme, probably because its an important scene concerning his story, but does result in the music having a more sad tone than the ominous one you'd expect from that scene.
1:00 honestly im less weirded out by the word “annihilate” and more by the stress on the word “you.” Like.. yeah? He’s obviously the one you would annihilate for that. Cause he’s the one who did it. He says it like it’s some kinda reversal or something, it’s weird
That's one of the only games where the lip flaps weren't adjusted for the English version, so they had to match the Japanese ones. It leads to some odd deliveries.
@@CrazyRiverOtter its because originally the cutscenes were pre-rendered in the PS2 version
I guess they didn't want to rerecord takes and/or reanimate for the HD versions which do render it realtime.
@@CrazyRiverOtter that makes sense, but i'm just confused as to why they couldn't have just changed the word order around? i feel the the stress and animation would look fine if they just said something like "i will have you ANNIHILATED!"

Just doesn't sound as manacling.
People need to say stuff like this instead of "unalive".
I agree unalive is so cringe
I will choke the spark of life out of my existence if this trend continues...
But I like the word unalive, it's funny
It honestly makes sense for most of these characters to talk this way. But when you get to Jack Sparrow, that's when it stops making sense. With all due respect to Jack, his vocabulary was very limited due to his time. I don't think he would use the word "annihilate."
well, at least they’re being creative with it instead of just saying “unalive” every damn time.
When you have to reach a page/word requirement for an essay be like:
God, so many of these are so clean that I never questioned it as a kid, but some of them it's like come on, just say it already
The power of subtext dialogue. KH dialogue can be cringy at times but in these cases they're impactful.
At least they're not saying "send him to the Shadow Realm" or "Next dimension".
Which is funny, because that's literally what happens when people die in KH! Or at least to the ones who have their Hearts taken by Darkness.
send them to Brazil
I believe that because of this Sora actually thought Riku could be dead when Roxas told him that he defeated a Riku once.
tbf very few people and characters actually die in this series
they used to, before nomura went full dragon ball 😭
And the ones that do usually come - with a few exceptions of course *cough* Eraqus *cough.*
(Not including everyone in the Keyblade Graveyard)
Disney characters built different
@Neiheim90 We been usin that word since the first animated feature film
And yet both BBS and DDD managed to throw “hell” in.
And Chain of Memories in its original release, though the console remake changes Axel's line
Sleeping Beauty
Maleficent: See for yourself. All the powers of HELL!
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Judge Claude Frollo: This is an unholy demon. I am sending it back to hell, where it belongs.
Later: Sings Hellfire song.
(These happened in the movie not in the game but I wanted to point it out.)
Tron Legacy
Sam: Yeah, well that is one hell of a way to live.
Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories Game Boy Advance edition
Axel: It's about time you gave me one hell of a show!
The exceptions are all hypotheticals. It’s fine to mentioning killing so long as it’s a killing that never actually happens. (Cloud doesn’t kill Hercules, Daisy doesn’t kill Donald, Larxene is speaking metaphorically, Terra doesn’t kill Snow White)
Kingdom Hearts is just a few steps away from having its own "Shadow Realm"
When you think about it, Kingdom Hearts has been avoiding RUclips censorship longer than RUclips itself has...
1:37 foreshadowing kh3 right there
Axel knew all along!🤣
God, realizing this struck me down hard.
Really retconned the original line from Pirates of the Caribbean At Worlds End
This has got to be a video game rating system thing because even the old Disney movies didn’t care about saying the word kill or not
Vexen: *gets atomised*
"He was struck down"
My favorite example of getting around saying it sounding worse is in gravity falls - "I've got some children I need to turn into corpses*
I feel like in most instances of this, it sounds better with the word play.
But since they've used kill before, idk why they couldn't have let Jack say it, lol.
This has the same energy as Pokédex entries trying to avoid the word “kill” so they just make it more terrifying by saying “drains the life force of”
saying someone's "star blinked out" sounds pretty cool actually
Thirteenth Discretion is the ost of "we can't say the K word but you know what happened"
This reminds me when Dragon Ball Z Kai was on Nicktoons and they would say a character "was defeated" after they were just murdered on screen.
Every time I hear "Struck down" "Smooth criminal" starts playing in my head.
While the word “disappeared” is a really goofy dance around saying dying, “choke the life out of” or “take ___ ‘s life” is really dark and chilling (in a good way)
To be fair, when referring to Nobodies, the K word isn’t exactly an accurate description of what happens when they’re struck down.
true, although for the most part I don't think they would have actually known that
3:00 I thought Donald said “No no no, Disney would kill me!”
Bioenergi used to have a no "kill" policy. In Link's Awakening there was a miniboss who said something like "I'll k-k... destroy you!"
The title made me think that "key" was the word. And I was like "no way."
Of all the people to not say 'kill', why Jack Sparrow? He's not doing some exaggerated sentence or figure of speech in that scene, so why the weird wording? Many of these can be somewhat reasoned, like for nobodies the whole meaning of existence is already twisted to begin with, and others like Braig just have their own way of speaking. Hence Jack is the most confusing one.
I feel like not saying kill adds a charm to it.
Tell me “eliminating your existence” doesn’t sound cooler and more gruesome than “killed”
I like how half of these sound perfectly fine the way they are. And then there's the other half... 😅
You silly billy, this is a Kingdom Hearts game. No one can die.
I was waiting for someone to say, “I’ll make you un-alive.”
I can't believe all of those poor people were so cruelly sent to the other dimension like that.
When i saw K word i thought you were talking about the K slur and i was like "WHAT SCENARIO WOULD THE GAME ALMOST USE THAT"
I've seen quite a few people bring that up. Thankfully I don't even know what it is.
I'm really racking my brain trying to think of what word that could be.
Could you whisper it to me?
(Nevermind, I remembered it.)
KH would have a field day with the Shadow Realm.
Aqua didn't though 😅
Frankly avoiding saying it can bring about some creative alternatives. Some that do sound far more gruesome than just saying kill
Deadpool on Disney spiderman literally says I can't say the k word.
I thought the "k" word was supposed to be "Kingdom" or "key".
But apparently, it's "kill" according to the description.
i thought it was kike
Or by like.. watching the video..?
@thephonelad992 there isn't a commentator explicitly saying "Kingdom Hearts seems to be be bending over itself to avoid saying "kill" ". Couldn't have guessed what the title was talking about from the video alone.
Dissapear, struck down, annihilated, destroyed... and then there's deep six'd and choked the life outta.
So basically, only Disney characters are allowed to break Disney's rules
Jacks version is the funniest because we know what the real world quote was. It's so jarring.
KEYBLADE!
Okay I believe you
"annihilate" is fully within Jumba's character to say, I wouldn't call that one a stretch
I remember the day Kennedy was struck down.
Just a reminder, the first game kept the Queen of Hearts' obsession with beheading her subjects, though the Aladdin scene where Iago straight up said "beheaded" wasn't included as Agrabah takes place after Aladdin met the genie.
Hey, at least they’re creative. That’s what restrictions does to you. gets you thinking.
1:09 Missed opportunity to say something like "sent into oblivion"
Lately, i've found a new cool indie retro styled game. Its called "ULTRA-STRIKEYOUDOWN" made by Hakita.
To be fair, "strike down" sounds so much more dramatic, and ambiguous enough to bring someone back at any time.
No joke going into this video I thought the K-word was “Keyblade” because of the amount of times they say it.
2:06. Huh. He actually tried to follow through with it too.
Tbf, a lot of these sound really cool
Even with all these examples, it never feels like the characters are saying anything out of character in order to avoid saying "kill." Almost every single line (aside from Jack Sparrow saying "annihilate" cuz he'd 100% say "kill") feels like a natural thing the character would say.
Still better than “unaliving”
They actually did use killed in 358/2 days
Did you know steve jobs was struck down by ligma
It's like Teen Titans when they would say "destroy", "get rid of", "annihilate" anything that even sounded like kill or die. Even after Slade died it was still "he's gone", "Terra took you down, WAY down"
I convinced that the whole Kindom Hearts franchise is a Seperoth's feaver dream from regenerating in Jenova pod.
