the way that the song in its original context is so triumphant and happy, yet here it’s used to show riku succumbing to his curiosity to the point where he floods the island with darkness is AMAZING like.. repurposing this as as a villain song is SO cool. in both contexts it’s about going your own way and how liberating it feels, and we can see that in riku’s visible joy here- i imagine this is really what it felt like from his point of view. it’s a thematically perfect song for him and used so cleverly. to say nothing of how beautiful the animation is!

Me too It made me really understand Riku's point of view because on our side we might just think that he just fell into darkness for no reason
idc what happens or if his character changes i will forever hate riku so much. when he took sora’s keyblade at the beginning of hollow bastion my blood was boiling and i was too hot to sleep, it took me like 2 hours and for that.. duck you riku.

I just love how the connection with Terra appears. Terra was from beyond the island and he was also a promise and an invitation to go.

I love the focus on Riku's eyes especially when the ocean shines in them.
This captures the feeling of wanting to embrace the desire and see the world.
A star walks into a black hole but doesn't seen phased. The black hole then turns to the star and says, "I don't think you understand the gravity of this situation."
THIS WAS AMAZING!!! Just the flow of the animation, the lip-syncing--I especially loved how you animated his hair?? Whenever he moved, when he did the typical Riku "hair flip"--Just everything was so smooth and beautifully transitioned. Amazing job as always and a perfect way to juxtapose the feeling Riku has towards wanting to leave this "tiny world" and simultaneously not seeing the world around him grows too. Would eventually love a sequel to this with an "after journey" if you had any ideas for it in the future >w>
ahhh tysm faux!! Right now I don't have any plans or ideas for like, a sequel to this, but it's not off the table if inspirations strikes mweheheh

This is awesome! I loved the shot with Terra summoning his keyblade and then flipping it over so Riku could take the handle and make the oath. The little scene where Sora playing with the other island kids and then getting smacked in the back of the head was a great detail. Riku had that flicker of the Keybade being in his hand, considering he WAS going to have it before giving in to the darkness. Then Riku actually going and prying the door open was so cool! I loved seeing Kairi come up. All in all, fantastic!
The Terra parts hit me in feels I had not felt in so long... Absolutely stunning work!
See, this is why a Moana world needs to be in Kingdom Hearts! The themes are just perfect!
This is why Moana might be an interesting world to visit in the next game. The parallels between her and Sora, wanting to move out of the island and explore new worlds, might be something to touch upon. Especially since no meddling 😉
I think the more interesting part would be the idea that Sora at that moment would be wanting to return home. That makes a more funny prospect.

I think this would work better as a solo riku game. Taking place between the events of after 1 and before CoM. Including other worlds that also have a similar theme of wanting more like... *sigh* treasure island.
I always thought the concept on Moana fit precisely with Kingdom hearts as a Disney world about returning a lost heart with Demi gods and monsters
that's exactly what I thought! it fits so well and I think sora would see a bit of riku in her: the urge to travel into the ocean and find out what else is out there
I think this did a better job of filling in the blanks than the original story. Cause not once did the original KH tell you WHY he did it. You just assume he was obsessed, maybe even slightly possessed in some way.
Not really fair to compare this to to kh1 when it uses info from other kingdom hearts games
You answered your own question. He got curious after seeing Kairi arrive from another world, felt bored and restless at being stuck on the same islands, and over time his curiosity grew into an obsession that Ansem only coaxed further and further, and thus caused Riku to draw in more darkness into his heart.
Well Riku always wanted to see other worlds. He always felt imprisoned and contained in his island world
He wanted to be free and see what’s beyond his world
He began to saw that opening the door to his World’s heart, and embracing Darkness was the only way
He was inspired by tales of Young Xehanort leaving the island years ago.
He knew Terra was from the outside world and wanted to find him, and instinctively wanted to embrace the legacy Terra gave him as his successor
He wanted to be free, not contained by ocean and sky. To be free to soar and see everything not later he realized what a mistake he made, as he got freedom at the cost of everyone else.
I've been in the KH fandom since the first game came out and honestly this is one of the best fandom creations I've seen! From the moment I saw Moana I knew so many of its themes fit the KH universe well and wanted it to be a world in a game eventually but omg I never realized how well this song resonates with Riku. Amazing work!

The animation is so freaking good, wow!!! This song fits for Riku so well, dang, i am so glad you thought of that. The scene where Riku excitedly opens the door is so good. He looks so happy and free, and it really shows how he doesn’t know that the darkness is a bad thing yet. Maaaaaan. I am amazed

Man this is GREAT! I really love how the triumphant feel of it all takes such a sinister undertone - especially the last line of "How far I'll go" GAH! Chills

Watching this really puts a different perspective on how the events of KH1 went, people thought Riku was this big jerk, when really he was just being the big brother of the group. Him and friends and to see what beyond their world, and to Riku, the door was the way to let him and his friends see what's outside their little island. He wanted to make his friends happy but didn't realize the danger since he was too blind to see that he was manipulated by Ansem and Maleficent.
Happened upon the Surface Pressure video and absolutely fell in love with the style, definitely played it a few dozen times now, and thinking this is gonna be the same! Doesn't hurt that Riku and Aqua are my favorite wielders.
This is breathtaking. I appreciate all the attention to detail that went into destiny islands, you even included the star tree checkpoint during the race in the background of one point. I love how some frames look like the manga's art style too. All around fantastic job

"Part of your World" with Kairi or Naminé would SLAP!
RAAAHHH THIS SO GOOD! I love the focus on RIku and how Terra's promise and bequeathing changed the course of his self image and perspective of the world. He already knew in his heart there was more out there, but he felt like he could venture out and see more! The colors and atmosphere are phenomenal, I keep rewatching it and seeing the little movements of each scene! This is fantastic!
Ohhhhh, I wish this kind of animation was around when I was still in the fandom. My heart's doing flips for my boy.
This gives me flashbacks to playing this game. I enjoy animations so much but could never really get the hang of drawing so now I just play video games 😂
This is so good. A scene like this would’ve fit perfectly in late KH1. Imagine the alternate universe where Kingdom Hearts is a musical like most Disney movies, as opposed to only KH2 Atlantica who’s original songs sucked. Also, shoutout to Utada, obviously, but those aren’t really traditional Disney musical songs.
I wouldn't like it in the whole game, but maybe there's a specific world that is like that. In kh1 it would've replaced monstro

The idea that Destiny Island's fall to darkness was caused by Riku prying open the door with the wooden sword is SO good.

THIS IS INCREDIBLE! I’m an enormous Kingdom Hearts fan; Riku is my favourite character in the series (funnily enough Aqua is one of my others) and here you really capture the sense of him feeling torn between his longing to explore beyond his island and the connection he has to his friends there, with the sense of duty he feels from the promise he made as a kid (which is pretty rich given how Terra messed everything up and basically caused the events of the series at the time in the first place, and Riku’s dedication to his friends throughout (especially Kairi’s safety in the first game even when he was under the influence of darkness, then Sora throughout the rest of the series as he attempts to grow as a person and make up for his harmful actions throughout KH1)). The animation is beautiful (I’m also an animator so know first-hand the time and effort it takes); the characters’ movements, the expressions (particularly the closeups of Riku’s eyes), the colour work with the lighting, it’s gorgeous. Sorry for the long comment, just wanting to show my appreciation for your work

The darkness that nearly took them both was riku's darkness and the light which the keyblade came from was Riku's light wanting to protect sora. Despite loving this series for 13 years

This was amazing! Good use of the song to showcase how Riku, at the time, wasn't going to let anything hold him back from leaving the island, that he was willing to give it all up just to go to other worlds and not realize the consequences of his actions. I also really loved how you only gave him a detailed face compared to everyone else. To quote another character if I may. "This is my story, and you're not part of it".
