Yeah can we stop a moment to realize how clutch all this shit was? He got a life out of nowhere (points maybe?), that apparently gave him another bomb and only because of that he managed to kill the mob circle of death + Invincibility frames bought him enough time to land more shots and barely beating that brain. And he had no continues. That was awesome!!
At 25:21 and 25:51 he gets an extra life from x00 each time (so that's two extra lives in the span of 30 seconds), and both in the same way, using a bomb during the spinning brains maneuver of the boss (and the second time the cut starts with him falling after the using the bomb). There are three cuts/edits during that 30 seconds period skipping to different boss attack patterns. And he only makes a comment expressing surprise at being alive over the second extra life. All the evidence points to save state usage. I actually wish I hadn't noticed since it kind of ruins my image of Ryu and how genuine he often appears to be.

@@megavolt67 Bruh, [facepalm] the only ''evidence'' find here is that you don't know much about this game. There's nothing suspicious about him getting an extra life a little after killing those giant eyes(even with the time gap); that the giant eyes phase is super rewarding in the matter of points and generally, it is purposely triggered by players in order to fast farm extra lives: one life each time if you're good, more if you know what you're doing. Ryu didn't get any during the phase but accumulated enough points to gain an extra life in the next one. You judged Ryu without knowing what you were talking about, shame on you man, lol. The good news for you is that you can retrieve your confidence in him

This is surely one of the best games ever made, and my favourite of Contra series. It's a really tough game to play without knowing all the tricks, but you learned really fast how to beat each boss and remembered the golden rule of Contra games: when in doubt, use scatter shot! The ending was super intense but you were able to clutch it, I'll be looking forward to your stream of the hard mode on this game!
I thought it was called Spreadshot, not scattershot?

it was just too hard for me as a kid tbh. I want to love it, but, it was too hard. I preferred the NES contra!

Ryu, your channel is great. It's like being couch-locked next to your friend while he's playing video games, and you don't dare interrupt because you're not on his level, but you're just cool to chill and watch. Very nice USP.

I gotta say even though I grew up with the battle toads games and watching TMNT, I think this looks like the best SNES game I've ever seen (aside from maybe mario lol)... Such great boss battle concepts, lots of action, a few ways to dodge, meaningful weapon choices... This game was way ahead of its time, but in a good way! I'd be happy to see you play anything else in the Contra series!

Ryu, that was awesome! I look forward to your stream on Hard mode! Super Pro-tip: holding R or L (I forget which one) locks your character in place, allowing you to fire in 8 directions without moving. That is super handy in a lot of fights. Good luck! :D

One of my favorite games growing up. I don't remember if I ever beat it solo but beat it quite a few times playing with my dad. Brought back a lot of memories.

God, this game is such a 90s kid's dream. Very creative, tons of guns and explosions, alien look creatures, missiles, etc. So 90s. I love it.

10:56 these guys and the next guy gave me nightmares as a kid. No joke. I remember them vividly. They remind me of something right out of Hellraiser.

Played this game to death as a kid (well the Super Probotector: Alien Rebels EU version anyway). What a game, aged well. Had no idea it had such a reputation for difficulty I think I completed it even back then as a kid.
Of course I have the benefit of hindsight, but watching Ryu consistently using the worst gun selection / strat possible in several scenarios was painful. Man powered through it with pure skill and no tactics though, props.
Also there definitely was a pretty badass intro if you don't press start too early, unless that was only in the European version.
Absolute classic game and a joy to watch someone discover it (even though sounds like he had played it before)
I always think of my best friend growing up when I see this game. I would go to his house to play SNES with before I got my own (and after). I never saw past the boss where you're jumping on the missiles...until today.
Definitely a classic whose gameplay holds up today. I'd say Battletoads too.

I tried playing this recently on the SNES classic. I stopped after trying the 2nd stage because I was getting motion sick with the awkward map controls. I was thankful you blasted through that stage before I got motion sick watching.
HUGE fucking respect for beating this (seemingly) so quickly on normal! Well done, man. Now for hard mode, I'm sure you're already planning on it or already have but you need to learn some of the speed strats. Mainly the dual shooting technique where you furiously tap and constantly switch between your weapons. Looking forward to watching you tackle it!

while watching these videos I was trying to think of a hard SNES game and kept thinking of zombies ate my neighbors. but I would then think maybe it was only hard cause I was young. glad to see it made a top 10 list and im not complete poop at vids lol. you should do more of thee videos. maybe top 10 for each console. or hardest games of the last decade.

Difficult but also very good.
Nice job. But hard mode is where it's at. Also, Blaster Master for NES is a great game for this series.
Blaster master is tough. I've never played it enough to actually get anywhere, but the maze-like levels and "secret" doors(if I remember correctly?) kind of drove me nuts. It does look like a pretty cool game though. But definitely tough.

It might be because I played this game to death (literaly, many times) when I was younger but this one isn't really all that bad too. Once you learn how to use your weapons efficiently this isn't that bad. Even the C weapon I never liked before, I learned the hard it was actualy a GOOD weapon, when used correctly. Love that game :D
Edit : And yes there's another form of that final boss on the hardest difficulty for the true ending. You have to fight him while escaping with the missile chopper.
In the difficult mode the final boss has another phase, acquire some arms and start climbing and attacking XD how many memories of wasted hours you brought me, Greetings from Honduras 💪😎🇭🇳

A few tips:
When you get in the tank in level 1, dont fire...just keep moving forward till you get to the next roadblock, and you should have enough hp to destroy it and move on.
Tank boss on level 1: stand to the right and just shoot the laser, no need to move/jump.
Level 2 boss [spider thing]: have the laser and/or flamethrower, move down when you spawn and get as close as you can when its not spinning. Both of your weapons will clip thru the body of the "tank" and hit the red eye.
Level 3: When the miniboss is climbing the wall, stay as close to the top claw as you can, the missiles will always miss you. Do your best to keep the flamethrower up to this point by using whatever you have as a second weapon [it makes the fight at the top a lot easier]. You only lose your powerup if you have it selected when you get hit.
Level 4: No tips....this level sucks lol!
Level 5 boss fight: Hey, congrats, youve made it further than I ever have in like 15+ years of playing this game!!

That was one of the most clutch final boss ever
Duuuude LOL I remember using a cheat on the original Contra... Taped down something hard onto the shoot button on my controller (the old square Nintendo controller, the ones that left permanent indentions in your hands and were basically indestructible lol) and kept my guy on the right hand side of the screen, which allowed him to kill everything that came into view. I left it overnight, went to school, came home, and had basically an infinite number of lives when I finally resumed playing 🤣 LMAO!
Seeing this brings me back... Need to play this again soon... Way back when me and a friend used to race by seeing who could beat it the fastest, which brings me to a question; why do people in general consider this as a hard game to beat? I love the Contra games! :)

Fun Fact: This game was censored in Germany. They switched out the sprites from the main characters and all human enemies with robots. (Because when robots shoot each other it is ok???) They even renamed the game to "Super Probotector". So when I first heard of the Contra series I was like: "What is Contra?" :D
We even wondered "What is Contra?" here in the US. Was it named after the Iran-Contra scandal of the time, or what?

Hard mode adds another final boss fight after the brain wakes back up while flying up on the helicopter.

Ah, that explains it. Though there is a way to farm lives if you can make it to level 3. Thats the only way I've beaten Contra 3. The farming takes forever. too. I literally clamped down the shoot button and changed the input on my TV to watch a show then came back to 30 lives.

Wow, the first two levels actually had me thinking people were exaggerating the difficulty of this game. Things really went up a notch from level three onward.

I bought an SD card online with ever Nintendo, super Nintendo, game boy, Sega, etc. game, a bunch of N64 games, etc., and Batman was the one game I wanted to play more than any other. And it was literally the ONLY game that didn't work. I was so pissed.
