    Art should be joyful!
There's WAY too much negativity and fearmongering in the art community these days. Lighten up, grab some art supplies, or push some pixels around while jamming out to some good tunes. Fill your life with gratitude and you'll never feel like its "work" at all!
    #arttips #learntodraw #howtodraw

I’ve noticed negativity in the art world even before the AI boom. I like doing cheerful and colorful drawings and artwork most of the time and I feel like art like that should be appreciated more. Getting views and clicks never mattered much to me; I’m just glad to put positive art out there in the hopes of making someone’s day a little better. I have done the occasional vent piece and trust me, those are terrifying, but I never let people see those because they’re personal pieces.

I love your level-headedness. I have been feeling joy of finishing the projects, not actually drawing. I feel like I am too late, too silly, too... Something.

Gratitude is really important. I tell myself the same things when I'm having artblock (and of course do a bunch of other stuff to get new input in my brain xD)
And funny enough, One Piece also inspired me a lot during my big project. It's something about the unfiltered creativity in it I think.
I also remember a thing a classmate said to me once: "It's amazing that you can draw everything!" Which of course is not really true, but what he meant was: Not everyone, like him for example, can bring their ideas to paper.
And somehow that was the first time I realized that I actually learned a thing or two about art and how high my confidence actually is... like I'm still very much a student and have much to learn, but I'm not afraid of just trying to draw anything... I know enough to figure out a basic shape, basic light and shadow and really, that's already a lot. Not everybody can do that :) and that's nice to know! ... well... back to practicing x)
    Thanks for the video Trent!
    Take care :)

I think that one of the most joyful things in drawing is doing it from imagination. Maybe is because of the approach I took when I started learning how to draw just using references and doing studies that NOW when I look back (3 years ago) I really don't have that many drawings I did just for fun. Also, I think drawing from imagination will reinforce your mental library a lot better than just drawing with references, but that is my opinion. Sometimes we must remember why we started drawing. Now I don't feel the same enjoyment I got compared to when I started, because currently I just draw to earn money. And when I realized that I tried drawing from my imagination or just doing quick sketches for me and it felt good.

i was also going through a rut that spanned from this past weekend to about right now. the whole "people have it worse than you" doesnt really work for me and how I think, but your main point on finding joy really resonated with me. During my art block or whatever you call it, I decided to step away from art almost entirely and picked up a game called "GunZ: The Duel" and had a great time with it. I then realized all the cosmetics were free (its from 2003), then I created my character, and now I'm finalizing some line art for said character. I found the joy in the game, made an original character which then inspired me to create a piece based on said character.
Art should be another thing you do, not the ONLY thing you do. Doing something too often usually leads to burnout and self doubt (which sucks as an entry level game artist trying to build a portfolio lol).
keep up the great work! dont worry about the youtube channel slowing down, you are working on a game!

10:02 I have followed a trend where u draw sailor moon on ur own style on facebook once just because Im bored. I did the drawing, it made me excited actually, I post it and disappointed about the likes. Before joining that drawing trend, I knew I cant keep up with the incoming trends.
It will really be exhausting following a trend, I did it once and will not do it again. Whenever I saw that drawing I made for that trend, it doesn't bring joy compare to seeing my personal works that I do now. Even if you look at your personal drawing after a decade or so, u will still feel that joy when u made that, in my opinion.

    Glad to be a member!
Years ago, your (mindset) art videos helped me to get a job, and I managed to keep it up until now, despite knowing there are better artists out there. I am forever grateful for having a paid art job and finding your videos in the past. They are always so insightful and inspiring, and you say exactly what has to be said even though it might be a tough pill to swallow. I can say with absolute certainty that they have changed my life for the better. From being able to move to a better place, to having the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people along the way.
Being a member is the least I can do to show how much it all means to me. And of course, watching all of your content and pressing the like button.
Since you asked for questions, here is one: Have you ever dealt with project delays? If so how did you deal with it? Did you adjust the date, or increase your work hours (or from others) in order to still hit that deadline.

Check lists are useful. For mental health reasons I don't have the best executive function and for years I have often struggled with big tasks. Now days I get my pad of blank 'to do' lists and spend 5 minutes planning a task and writing down things that are 15-30 minutes long. Then just work down the list one task at a time. It really helps me with that kind of paralysis from having too many options.
Ie instead of gardening I'll have a list like:
    Mow front lawn
    Mow back lawn
    Cut hedges at front road
Cut bougainvillea (it always needs it.)
    Weed front path
    Clean around back door
    etc etc etc
Spending 5 minutes (at most) on breaking down tasks into an order in a way my brain doesn't unless I'm thinking about it is really helpful.
Then I have kind of 'working hours' on my free days. Typically 1-3pm. And I just do things on check lists. Now that list can include tricky new art study things or prepping my DnD game. Or errands. Whatever. It just has to be something I feel productive doing and that is different for each person.

Hey Trent. Love your videos and how listening to you and the other great RUclips art professionals keeps me from bottoming out. I'm a college illustration teacher and love teaching the fundamentals. I've been doing small freelance jobs for game companies here and there and really want to do more but my opportunities have dried up for the past year or so. I've been applying to freelance jobs on Artstation and UpWork, messaging game developers in forums like BoardGameGeeks, Facebook, and Reddit, and have even been sending out emails and applications directly to publishers for a while and just can't seem to get the next gig. Even though I'm not getting the next job I keep drawing and creating new pieces to improve my portfolio. Any suggestions on what to do when you're stuck in a career rut?
