This game just has an ethereal "something" that Minecraft fundamentally lacks: Atmosphere.
Minecraft is a game where you chop trees and build in absolute silence with the occasional music track that kinda feel out of place. The world is static, stagnant and it has no atmosphere. Vintage Story has atmosphere. The feeling of the wind rushing through the grass, the sounds of the leaves, and the god rays and lighting just tie it all together. I feel like I can BREATHE in Vintage Story.

Ran into this vid by accident, and I love it. VS is what MC should've been. Every step of the way feels meaningful. I have a ton of barely useable tools lying around in my base because I truly grow attached to them because I know the effort that it took to craft them, much more than placing ingots in a grid. Another thing that I've noticed is that I feel very reluctant to delete old worlds, which didn't happen in minecraft at all, they were basically disposable. Another thing I love about VS is that even after reaching a certain point in the game, I still have chores to do. It's not like in MC that I can make everything automatic: I still have to tend to my animals, I still have to rotate crops, I still have to cut wood and store. The seasons make it so planning my resources actually means something. It's an outstanding game and, alongside Project Zomboid, the gold standard of survival games.

As someone with 1000+ hours in both games, the main difference is that VS takes early game minecraft and makes that the core gameplay loop.
You are not going to rush Irontools and Armor within 5 minutes and hunting monsters, you will run around with a stone spear hunting rabbits. Dangers have high speed or ranged attacks and armor comes late. Surviving and stockpiling food for winter is gonna take up a lot of your time, and when you are not doing that you are picking up bits of copper.

Vintage Story is a genuinely fresh take on the crafting and survival systems of games. It's cozy, it has variety, it feels accomplishing to progress through the "ages,"
Just an overall solid experience, for the price they charge.

  • @foxgirl4864

I haven't played this game for very long, but lately I've put a lot of time into it
I'm still very early game, however the goals that I set for myself and achieved have been the most rewarding and actually have me giddy about them for hours. Being able to progress at your own pace with the game's basic core rules that you can change for yourself is so nice. The challenge matters on your playstyle, and I absolutely love it. You have no idea how happy I was when I was able to create *Barrels*.
The atmosphere matches perfectly to what you're doing and has jump-scared me quite a few times in an enjoyable way. The immersion I feel when playing this game is insane and I'm slowly trying to get my friends to play it, too. The grinding ratio is perfect to the rewards and just when I thought I got it down I continue to learn new and innovative ways to solve a problem. I love that it's a challenge to build up and get stronger rather than doing it in minutes in Minecraft. Each world is luck based, however it still captures the beauty of an open world all to yourself and still keeping the charm that Minecraft has unfortunately lost over time.
I would still play and enjoy Minecraft, but I only play modded- Vintage Story allows for all of that to happen and more for a very decent and reasonable price. I love it.

    "And dont dig too deep"
For real tho. On one of my spelunking expeditions I came across a translocator. It brought me far north but also far underneath. I looked around, placed torches and then wanted to head onwards to maybe find some ore. Suddenly in the distance I see a light that started to move and I just come to a full stop. Putting my torch away I try to sneak towards it to maybe see what it was but then head a metallic and machine like sound coming from it and it started to move slowly towards the corner it was behind. Yea I still didnt see what it was. And to this day I have no idea what it was either. I turned and ran back to the translocator scared like nothing else in any game ever scared me before.
And you know wats the best part? By today I am almost certain it was just a Locust. But the fact I didnt know what it was and still being unsure since we have no idea what horrors otherwise lie in the deep rust just made me paint a picture in my head that I didnt want to see.

It's been awesome seeing this game's community slowly grow and see more recognition. It's definitely not for everyone and hopefully the combat sees improvements in the future, but if the core systems are enjoyable to you, it's an absolute masterpiece. The game is beautiful (as in, minecraft was never attractive to my eyes, probably because I never liked what seems like badly made 3d models since the ps1 era. I'm from the 8bit era of games) - it has an actual style instead of just "block", pretty much like Hytale.
The gameplay loop feels familiar somehow since after you learn the basics, everything starts to click because... it's mostly based on real techniques. The game literally teaches you stuff.
How modable it is, and how most modders keep up with the realistic aspect of the game, with a sprinkle of the unknown.
How artistic you can get with it - the chisel is a godsend.
And how fast the game updates. I've been coming back to it every six months or so mostly because I like to play with friends, but said friends SOMEHOW prefer minecraft. They say this is too much of a hassle to play and that minecraft is easier. Man, I tried, I really can't dislike minecraft more if I tried (while still recognizing a handfull of good aspects it has, like redstone stuff and the world library to keep thousands of free books available online. Thing is, the book thing can now be done in Vintage Story too, and now the only thing missing in it is something like redstone without creative mode)
Anyway, welcome to Vintage Story, hope you have fun in this world young seraph!

The developers of this game actually worked on the successor mod to TFC back when it was abandoned before creating their own game because of the limitations of mods in minecraft. TFC has since been picked back up but I'd say VS still does more than enough to set itself apart from TFC in terms of its combat systems, mechanics, and aesthetics. If you liked TFC at all then I'd highly recommend you give it a try, it improves on all of those systems and adds a lot on top.
