I tend to try to buy branded hides when I can. I do make mostly small items but a branded say Pony Express style satchel or large tote is always a big hit with my customers. I think If I had a bunch of brand cut outs, I'd dye and oil them and use as wall hangers.
Other than esthetic value, what are the down sides to using the branded leather? Does it weaken or create rough spots over time/use? I think by using the branding in strategic ways increases value. Am I missing something?
Enjoyed the visit with Pedro Pedrini. I have a comment about your tooling style. It seems odd to have vine work mixed in with the feathers you do so well. I'm wondering if there might be a different filler to go along better with the feathers. To me, that could be your unique "style." Does anyone else have a comment on this?
Ehh. Leather is graded by more than surface defects Don. Holes/cuts are also part of the grade. While every tannery/retailer may have a different way to grade, holes and cuts are also part of the grading process. I agree that A/B/C may be nothing but surface defects that may be the factor, but cuts and holes are too. Belt makers are concerned with brands too, as it looks bad on a belt and also ruins a prime part of the hide we want to use too.
@@larryschmidt3594 I got that part, I'm wondering what country hides are coming from with no brands. You see a lot of unbranded cattle here in the US?
Always worth the wait for your videos. Thank you Don and Team!
Thank you for sharing

I think the brands are awesome!
Hope to make Waco one day for the show!
I've had brands on H/O sides at least a couple times now. Pisses me off when I see that.

I don't understand the hatred for a brand. I think they add interest.

Are you going to use those branded leathers?
Don, do you buy directly from Herman Oak or a vendor, and if vendor, who?
Where are the hides coming from that have no brands?
He had said Hermann Oak
