Build your raft and head due north to the big island, it has everything you need to set up a permanent base and then just make outpost on all of the other islands. You will find pigs, iron, clay, chest in the water and plenty of coconuts and wood there. It will take awhile to get up north on a raft, but it will be worth it.

Yet another thing I forgot if you see a banana tree that is bearing fruit don't cut it down for rope it won't respawn as a fruit tree if you do. I made this mistake.

Don't sell yourself short about your aim. You hit the same target consistently. I'm impressed you improved this quickly. Concerning the base question. I would leave the starter island as an outpost not a base. I would leave and find an island with a wild pig on it. once you do set up two water collectors a firepit with a smoker and a shelter. just make sure you don't build on top of where the pig spawns. a tusky headbut is not a fun alarm clock. another reason to leave the starter island is that I didn't find clay there. Clay nodes look weird in this game. They are flat slightly elevated oddly circular and vaguely pink in color. You will know it when you see it. One last thing the wobble during aiming is a mechanic tied to the aim skill. skills can be viewed by holding the F key and rotating the mouse wheel. Take this knowledge and grow my padawan.
