Shadowrun story for the elves dwarves and other mystical races and creatures being in current "future" timeline is that magic suddenly came back and humans and creatures that had dormant dna that tied them to the mystical beings, suddenly started changing back to those races and creatures. So your neighbors may suddenly be orcs. I read all the books many years ago, they are awesome.

    • @Alex-cq1zr
      @Alex-cq1zr 4 месяца назад +15

In old-school Shadowrun lore all metatypes have same dna - differences are caused by magic (which makes sense ig, since low magic is what caused them to lay dormant)
New editions chalk new metatypes up to small dna differences and mana levels

I do wonder which one i prefer more tho tbh.
Old-school shadowrun overall has cool setting flavor pieces like how spirits aren't defined by the summoner, but are instead either elementals for hermetics or more contextual spirits defined by their habitat for shamans... like, if you summon a Hearth spirit of an office, it might look like a giant office workers. City spirit? "Hey, is that a taxicab glaring at me with it's lights or did i have too much soykaf?"

While the reapearance of magic might have been sudden to the unsuspecting, the magic level is actually cyclical and connects shadow run lore with the earth dawn lore - a roleplaying system located in the far past of the earth, with a more medieval setting. Just so everyone knows, if you're reasonably intelligent you can probably effectively contribute to this project. It's all done in the editor. The github is open, so what that means is you can make changes to the mod that you think will be good and the developer can look at it and will probably incorporate them if they are decent. There's a lot of loose threads that could use content. If a genesis style open world shadowrun rpg is something you've always wanted, just try opening the mod in the editor and poke around. You might be able to help.

Genesis version is the best Shadowrun game, one of the best games ever made, and can be played via ROM if anyone is itching to try it. Once they got their mitts on it they created a Dark Age that Com Star would not only oppose but would have rushed to restore their HPGs. Everything Wizzards touches goes to the trash. "Harebrained didn't apply any of the stuff they did to Battletech in Shadowrun-" Splat, that's literally the business model for Catalyst Game Lab (the people who own BOTH Battletech and Shadowrun). Battletech is their big money maker, Shadowrun is just some title they own. Shadowrun hasn't been good since 4th edition (now 20th anniversary), some would say 3rd, but a lot of people agree that 5th was a step in the wrong direction, and 6th is an abortion.

4th started strong because Catalyst still had OG FASA freelancers involved. Then they decided that paying freelancers wasn't important (instead using company funds for home improvement) and sh*tcanned them, so the quality drops during 4th and leads right into the mess of 5th (where the rules don't even function).

But this mod is amazing, I haven't played it in a hot minute... like honestly yeaaars but I'm in the mood to give it another show. I really hope one day Harebrained decides to return to this franchise and make the Shadowrun game of our dreams!

Coming from someone who had a Sega Genesis, I never heard about the game but it would've been right up my alley. I was playing BG2 for years after it came out.

Never had a Genesis, but I played the SNES games and loved every minute of it! The thing I liked about it was you were a Samurai, Decker, and a Shaman/Mage all at the same time. I know you can't do that in the TTRPG, but it scratches a BIG itch for me! I usually play a Fighter/Thief/Mage in DnD, I go for the Jack of All, Master of None kind of character.

Oh wow, Shadowrun Unlimited mod.. Is this the very same mod that was trying to make sandbox since the game release? That would make it 9-10 years in development by dedicated fans! BTW -didnt they port the mod to Hong Kong or does it run on both games?

I played it a couple years ago. Unfortunately, the development is just at maintenance level. The writing is below average, and the main quest isn't finished. You can contribute. I even signed up to the github and contributed things like fixing typos, capitalization, and a double teleport trigger bug in one of the havens. Digging into the editor there's some cool ideas, but still a lot of work to be done. I considered buckling down and really trying to contribute, but it just seems like there are too many strands left unfinished. You don't have to know coding, it's all done in the editor. If you have basic logic abilities, you can open up the missions, look at the triggers and see how it all works. Anyone could really help adding to the variety, even with the same map layouts. Give it a shot.

I played both the SNES and Sega versions when I was a kid and loved them both despite how different they were. I've also played through Cyberpunk 2077 which is it's own thing and lets me know there is still room for something like Shadowrun. I bought the PC games: Returns, Dragonfall, and Hong Kong and it was so great to be back in the Shadowrun world. I feel like the movie Bright had to have been somewhat inspired by Shadowrun too, but there's no acknowledgement as such. I hope these developers continue to build on this as there is definitely a following for it.

I loved all the Shadowrun: Returns modules. But I believe I hit my Faust moment in Dragonfall, when I met that runner lady in a bar. I wanted to just hang out with her for the rest of my gaming. Just enter the game once in a few days, dive into this bar, ask her how's it going in the shadows, get a lucid dream, get a hangover, browse for contracts, eject to real life, rinse, repeat. There aren't many RPGs out there that really made me role play and not just jungle numbers and guess "the correct answer". Shadowrun, VtM: Bloodlines and CP2077. The Witcher series definitely very close, but it's harder because I've read books first and I have a firm canon of how'd Geralt handle the situation.

You know what's weird? A part of me is aware that neither of the Shadowrun games, Return, Dragonfall and Hong Kong, are actually good games, but I freaking love all three to d3ath. I'm aware of all their problems, just like I'm aware of all the fails of VTM: Bloodlines, but still I can't stop playing them. The plot on all of them is so freaking good! Way better than 99% of the movies and tv shows that have come out in the past 20 years at least. I can't stop going through them, replying each game over and over trying to find that perfect build, You know what I mean? Despite of all the things that are wrong about those games, I freaking love them!

100% on the Sega Genesis Shadowrun. One of my favorite open world RPG's of the '90's, too. And so much better than the SNES version, imo. I still go back to it occasionally, for the nostalgia of getting paid to shoot down 20 ghouls in an abandoned building with my Predator pistol as my first run, just to have the cloak and dagger vamp pop up to try to make it a bad run. Gunderson playing games again. No worries, chummer. All in a day's work.
If this is reminiscent of that old gem, then I'll definitely be checking it out. Just give me limitless jobs and fun gameplay, and I'm a happy little chiphead.

Three types of ICE: White ICE prevents and alerts the system to the presence of unauthorised acces; Grey ICE is able to run traces and eject unauthorised access, it even is able to damage any software the intruder has in active memory; Black ICE can damage the software (even unloaded softs), hardware and even the wetware of the intruder.

Played Shadowrun Returns. There is literally nothing better than an elf with a shotgun. You can just kill everything with your one character. Now Dragonfall nerfed some of the things that made that build so strong, namely Haste being harder to get and areas being more open as opposed to the tight corridors of the previous game where you could just put a stun wall in the doorway and wait for them to walk into it giving you several turns before they would even shoot you.

Nice, I really wanted them to release a sandbox of the SR games. This looks like it might scratch that itch. By the by, a roll of zero will mean zero successes, assuming they're using the D6 system from the ttrpg. Loving the soundtrack on this too. The samples from the SNES soundtrack have tickled my nostalgia.

I remember Shadowrun. It was before I got spoiled by Divinity Original Sin 2. I tolerated reading at the time.
And the story of each of the franchise really got me that Cyberpunk feel. The multiple races in a futuristic sci-fi world was very unique. Not like 40K.
But damn. If they got some good mods, I might just hop back in and try it.

I kickstarted all 3 shadowrun games, they were amazing and I had a really great time because everything was so well written.
I even wished I could play co-op... But the biggest flaw of the game is definitely the lack of interraction with the environment ! This was frustrating not to be able to search more stuff or break stuff. Those games are also pretty linear, you follow a quest and then another one comes up and it continue 'til the end. (and you get a bit more as a decker IMO)
I did see that mod back then and seeing it now makes me think that not much has evolved, everything still looks pretty bland compared to the original games.
I don't think I'll check it out to see what has changed because it's still the good old shadowrun from harebrain scheme missing so many things.
We need new shadowrun games though !!!!
