Shadowrun is one of those games that I was unable to enjoy during my childhood due to the enormous amount of reading in a foreign language. Today I can enjoy this game and many others better.
I love these! When i see this particular vid intro, ..cant help but picture you sitting in a maroon robe next to a fireplace, while smoking a wooden tobacco pipe as a fine scent of smoked cherrywood lofts in the air.
This was my favorite game when I was younger. When Shadowrun Dragonfall came out, I used the editor to make a prequel to it called “Brothers to the End”, where you play as Michael and Stark.
Nice to see you branch out a little I only stop by every once in a while for handheld reviews to see where's the market is at might play this on my PSP
I played this back in the late 90s when I was in high school. My first TTPRG was Shadowrun, and I was excited to find out there were video games. The SNES version was fun but very different than the tabletop experience, but I found that the Genesis one was impressively close for its time. I remember beating it twice, once as the samurai and once as the shaman. Probably gonna try to do a decker run soon thanks to this video.
Awesome video! =D I love being able to experience this game's cool things in this video without having to go through the pain lol. Thank you for sharing
Update: I finished the video. I know. But hear me out. I wanted you to know that I saw your new video was up, but wasn’t able to finish it til after. This was good and it unlocking that memory of “that’s right, I didn’t know what the heck I was doing either”. Glad I wasn’t the only one. Still a great video. Looking forward to the next mystery game
Videos like this make me want to come to your channel even more.Sometimes I get burnt out seeing a new handheld come out every other week, lol. Videos like this make me want to actually use my handheld to play those hidden gems I never knew existed. Team Maga (Make all Games Great Again)
@@TechDweeb Yeah, was really interesting to learn how much the manual helps! I played it on Sega Channel back in the day, so didn't have that option LOL
There's also a great hack: If you join the Mafia, you can purchase the most expensive armor, and then immediately sell it back to them for more than you purchased it. Do this over and over, and you've literally got unlimited Nuyen.
“And also, not everyone likes onions. Some psychopaths think they’re gross, if you can believe that.” I’d love to see a collaboration between you and Russ from RetroGameCorps (alias: onionsaregross).
Wow memory unlocked I played a lot of this game when I was younger, but when I think of Shadowrun I always lean towards the SNES version first I don't know why. But thanks always love your videos
I enjoyed Shadowrun. It was my first tabletop rpg experience back in the early 90s! It appealed to me more than the medieval style of d&d at the time. I read some of the novels, too!
Good point about reading the manual. I've found when getting back into these games that reading the manual is often mandatory. All the newer games generally have a tutorial or other handholding. Anytime I play something retro I didn't play as a kid, I'm totally like "what the heck am I doing?" because the games I actually played before...I read the manual back then! Thankfully scans of manuals are all over the place online.
Great review. If you're in the genesis stash you should try "Dune II: Battle for Arrakis". It's basically the game that spawned the RTS genre standard mechanics.
Shadowrun is probably my favorite TTRPG setting (well, up til 3rd edition at least) and the Genesis game is the exact reason why. It pulled me in and as soon as I found out there was a book game based around this awesome cyberpunk fantasy setting, I had to dive in.
Shadowrun was such a cool universe. I keep hoping someone will notice and remember, so we can get some NEW Shadowrun content. (Too bad the RPG mechanics for Tabletop were so cumbersome, that probably holds it back....). Great to see it reviewed in any form.
If I recall there is more to the hacking if you keep at it you find some more story. Yes Wild Arms is noteworthy. I think I enjoyed Skies of Arcadia the most in regards to older rpg of it's sort. I actually called the help line back in the day for wild arms 😅 memories.
Oh my, oh my. One of my favorite RPGs on the Genesis, based on one of my favorite TTRPGs of all time. Sorry to hear that you had some rough patches with it, but I can't even disagree - it does have some rough edges, it really does. I'll admit my love for it is a bit colored by nostalgia.
A game I’ve always been curious about - especially after playing the SNES version many times and buying this one years ago. Also, glad you dropped the British accent. Living in UK for 2 years, they’re not too fond of us Yanks reducing their rich culture to either cockney or posh accents. (I still do it, though)
I’m looking forward to this one! A Genesis game! Ive tried this one just briefly. I’m not familiar with the source material, I’ll revisit this one Missed an opportunity: should’ve played this one on the Anbernic RG ARC
that game looks AMAZING. never knew it existed. that's the kind of games i would have loved growing up. definetely buying this one. when i was young i was a nintendo fan boy (and still am) but i can't wait to discover the sega library!
This is such a classic!! I wanna recommend the new version of shadow run in steam, it's feels a lot like the tabletop original game and it's fun, engaging and beautiful
The "New" Shadowrun Trilogy on Steam and GOG is also pretty good if you liked this version. My only complaint with the combat is that there is no 'undo' for movement, which can be a harsh punishment if you misclick >.>
Next up: Shadowrun for the SNES. I can't say for sure but it looks like a completely different game going by my distant memory of playing it when it was new. I only rented it so I didn't get through it all.
I think I have some games called Shadow run on my GOG library but I've never played them before. Shadow Warrior on the other hand I have played and it's basically Doom with a super perverted main character. Edit: yes I do. Specifically they are Shadowrun Hong Kong Extended Edition, Shadowrun Returns, and Shadowrun Dragonfall director's cut. Wonder of i should play any of these?
Back when you had a manual and it told you how to play. It's a big reason most people playing NES, Genesis, GB and SNES have issues with so many games. Read the manual and suddenly you know how to play, or how to defeat a boss, or learn there's a map.
@@TechDweeb When they announced Cyberpunk, the first thing that popped to my mind was Shadowrun. An open world Shadowrun game does sound interesting now that you guys mentioned it.
Loved this game. I killed zombies for karma before I moved to the next town in the beginning. Matrix can be useful for stealing files and selling them for good nuyen. I like the snes one also but loved this one
Have you considered starting an onion of the month club? It could have tiers for different levels of involvement. I know not every onion enthusiast is into munching on 'em like apples. That's definitely top tier behavior.
Both are very different. The SNES version plays like a point and click CRPG, while the Genesis version is more of an action RPG. The Genesis version is more difficult to get into because there are some systems you need to learn (but also rewarding when you figure them out). I suggest you play both for 30 min and see which one you end up preferring!
Played and never finished back in the day chummer. It may be time I tried again. My old D&D crew had a few runs tabletop style. I read a lot of the books, Never Deal WIth a Dragon was a good one.
I got to play in a one-shot adventure of the TTRPG. This was before I ever even tried DnD. I remember I convinced our Mr. Johnson to get matching tattoos with me 🤷♂️
You can make the most money fastest as a decker. Just need to have the right software. I watched my older brother play. Later when I played I didn’t deck until a companion and made lots of monies
Had this game with my Nomad and never passed it. I was to the point where I had the implants to make my gun skills crazy where I could one shot anyone. I put way too much towards that and not enough into hacking skills so I might have been stuck. I sold it later, game was mint because I only read the manual once and it had one of those Genesis clam shells. I might try it again, I think it was a little more advanced than a Dragon Quest or a Final Fantasy and as a kid I couldn't get far in it.
Back in 2007, Shadowrun came out as a totally different and not at all well received game. That, however, was enough to really get me interested in the seeing and the idea. Someone, not sure who (maybe the interwebs) said the SNES version was much better, so I've tried playing it about 20 times since. Unsuccessfully.

This game was so hard!! I never got very far, but even still, I played it so so much. Great selection for Dust Game Society! ❤
