    Hi Peter,
Slovak here, living in Bratislava. Just to add some things which are very important. Fico has always been very pro-russian and used mostly anger and political attacks to maintain power. Recently after he got in his most recent term (4th) he became even more aggressive with his policies towards everybody, domestic and foreign. He is basically trying to be discount Orban - going after opposition, media and the European Union. The worst part is he is spreading Putin's propaganda (about Eu, Covid, Ukraine...the list is long). He is very effective with this namely with more "simple people" who do not check facts (mostly those "rural" people which you mentioned). The situation right now is the parties are trying to burry the hatchet at least for a short while, but his party SMER and SNS seem to be not willing to do that (still attacking media for causing the attack). Our society is extremely polarized and on the edge (Its basically west leaning folks vs Russia leaning folks).
The biggest irony is a 71year old pensioner from a very small town shot him - demographics which is the base of his power. I highly doubt any foreign involvement, he was just really frustrated with current political changes. There will be more news on Tuesday - we will see if both parts - the coalition and opposition are able to work together. A bit long but the situation is difficult.
Wish us luck, we are going to need it.
PS: There is a nice saying since you have mentioned Czechoslovakia's split. "The Czechs got the balls and all they left us was a dick"
Sincerely, a huge fan of yours

Firearms make a lot of sense out in the countryside, and no sense in the densely packed cities. This means that any law, whether allowing universal firearm ownership, or banning all firearm ownership, will not have the desired effect. The best case scenario is a layered system, whereby the general rules for owning firearms nationwide are similar to that for motor vehicles, but in the countryside and rural areas there are no further restrictions. Within densely packed urban center, much more restrictive policies should be in place. What we have now is just a random mess of every state doing it's own thing, with the worst outcomes for everyone.

To explain Fico: he's a bitter former communist who had to "change coats" in the 1990s and become a 'socialist.' He is the worst kind of populist with devilish charisma and extreme political intelligence. His superpower is to be able to give an impromptu speech in almost any venue (in public, on TV debates) and be very coherent and aggressive. His debate skills are unmatched in Slovakia. He is the greatest panderer in European politics to his aged, rural base who is nostalgic for the 'good old days' of communism. He used to hate Viktor Orban because of the Slovak/Hungarian ethnic politics, but now loves him for creating a blueprint for becoming an autocrat. The playbook: anti-EU, anti-Ukraine, anti-free press. He regularly calls them things like "dirty whores."

He's also an anti-violence activist... who uses violence to get his point across.

That being said, to ignore the American heartland and rural communities is a huge mistake, one that both D's and R's have been making over the past 2 decades, and that is why a con artist panderer like Trump was able to swoop in and win an election despite predictions. After his failed 4 years in office, unions were weaker, rural America was poorer, and the coastal cities had soaked up all of the wealth generated by his trillion dollar tax cut for the rich. Here's some additional context, after five years in opposition, Fico’s party won parliamentary elections last year on a pro-Russian and anti-American platform. He vowed to bring an end to Slovakia providing Ukraine with military support as it battled Russia’s full-scale invasion, and has argued that NATO and the United States provoked Moscow into war. Now with that said - he actually did NOT veto or obstruct the EU / NATO help for Ukraine. The assassin was affiliated with the "Slovenski branci" (Netflix documentary: When the War Comes). This is a pro-Russian (although already disbanded paramilitary group). Now this is a speculation, but it might be that the assassin just got sick and tired of Fico pleasing his electorate with his pro-Russian agenda, while never executing on his promises. All in all - I would not trust the pro-Russian government on any of the police investigation findings, given they took full control of the police force...EDIT:Turns out the assassin was anti-Fico and anti-Russian after all, expressing his discontent with the policies.irrespective of his motives, this is a condemnable act. The young journalist discovered some important facts connecting fico to mafia-like dealings that also involved murders. It appears fico used tactics from putin’s play book and orchestrated the assassination of the journalist….was said in media circles at the time. My roots are from rural eastern Slovakia and I lived there for 18 months in the early 2000s after college. That's a pretty good take on the situation. Rural and eastern parts of the country have tended to be poorer and more eastern oriented with nostalgia for the stability of socialist times. That said, the country, including the east benefited from rapid manufacturing led economic growth in the past 20 years as the country integrated with Europe. Along with that more western economic orientation came western cultural norms which threatened traditional Slovak values. The Russians are taking advantage of this tension and have engaged in a significant online propaganda campaign in the last few years to exacerbate this cultural wedge with many Slovak politicians playing into this anti western sentiment. Slovaks and Hungarians had always been bitter enemies but now populists, anti western leaders in both countries seems more united than ever. Interesting times to say the least.

wau, I have been following Slovak politics since I was a teenager (as I grew up there), and this analysis by P. Zeihan covers the key points (with the use of quite a few words only) real well and is beyond insightful. I have consumed Peter's videos for quite some time and I've always considered him to be a bit of a 'dr. Doom' internet personality however, he'd really turned my opinion of him around. I have never heard this succinct concise insightful usefully informative analysis of the Slovak society's political leanings and the background behind this, and all of that shockingly packaged into 4 minutes.

However, there was some information in the media that the old man was a Russofile and considered Fico to break his pre-election promises that he's made to please Russofiles and allure them to vote for him (which's worked) only then to come out post-elections and declare publicly that nothing will change and that Slovakia will continue same as before (only with no weapons delivery due to own shortages and a crackdown on justice, police and other security forces and press = so that his party can go back to looting the state coffers unimpeded and have nobody to come in their way/ after them or report on it). I guess that old man took it as if he was personally betrayed by Fico (who did pretty much stretch his promises quite far just to get back to where he's got to - elected as Prime minister and have his lap dog become the President = all in one swoop). Fico's sinister plan has worked out immaculately, he just couldn't forsee that there (amongst the masses of "sheep") will be someone who's had enough and won't mind to commit one of the worst crimes just to punish Fico for his lies, corruption, manipulations, etc.

I would disagree that the hate/violence is on both side of the political spectrum. Fico is actually mostly responsible for the hate in Slovak society. It started long ago, like when he's party was gaining political points on hate speech against Hungarian minority (case of Hedviga Malinova). He always finds some enemy which than he directs his hate against, weather it is minorities, LGBT people, journalists, EU, US, NATO, migrants ... even bears recently. He was booted after the assassination of investigative journalist (Jan Kuciak) and lost elections afterwards. For a while it seemed like he's done and that hate politics will not come back. But after Covid, high inflation, war in Ukraine, energy crisis ... he came back, radicalized more than ever fueling the hate in Slovak society ... until this happened.

Peter neglects to mention that America's rural populists were once Democrats. They were an important faction of his home state of Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas, Missouri, etc. Even parts of Texas. This goes back the late 19th century. William Jennings Bryan was leader of the Populist Party that merged with the Democrats. Bryan ran three times as the party's nominee for President in the 1896, 1900, and 1908 elections. He was Secretary of State in the Wilson administration. You may recognise some of these names: Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota, Sen. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, Sen. Tom Eagleton of Missouri. Rep. Jim Oberstar of Minnesota, and Rep. Jim Symington of Missouri. All 'Prairie Populists'. In the 1980s there was the House (of Representatives) Populist Caucus. The Democrat Party shifted to a base that is the universities, tech companies. and Hollywood, groups who are not populist.

The split was the dumbest thing Slovaks could do….because they listened to Meciar who was also another pro-Russian hardcore communist. Since then Slovaks sold out the country piece by piece to foreign investors and became a colony of warehouses and cheap labor. Since 1989 Slovaks did not improve their standard of living…it worsened dramatically and the country declined. The wages in Slovakia are the lowest in the entire EU. Salary of €1200 is considered “very good “ and the average retirement is about €400. Thousands of young people are leaving to other countries for work and better pay but most never return. So the population of young workforce is declining while numbers of retirees is climbing. Birth rate is declining too. Slovakia has its own military but its a joke. They have about 7 f-16s. What kind of war they can fight with that I don’t know. This is economically unsustainable. If it continues, in 50 years Slovakia will disappear as a country. Most likely it will be absorbed by other nations in EU. Sad but true.

Hey, I'm from Slovakia. I think you talking about political violence is an exaggeration. My opinion is that this was an isolated attemp but I'm not sure. I've heard that in the district where politicians' mansions are in Bratislava, there is bullet-proof glass on the houses, even for mid-level politicians. So that might be an indication that the people up high know more than I do.
From the people I know, I can't image someone being so radicalized that they would do such a thing. But I am an engineering student and we are not known for being political.
The gun laws here are restricted so anyone who would have a gun are hunters. If as you say, the rural people support Fico, which I would agree with, the most possible culprit would be an older person with a hunting license or someone who got a gun illegally.
When looking at the situation why Fico was elected, it was mainly due to catering to the Hungarian minority. I myself am a Hungarian and I know many people who have voted for him after his party promised the Hungarian coallition that they would repeal the Benes decrees.

    • @xlukas93
      @xlukas93 15 дней назад

It is not an isolated incident. I guess it is, per-se but not in bigger picture. There was a muder of journalist before, then attempts for assassinating former prime minister heger and president caputova. This one was just first somehow successful. There are some crazy people in the society and when everything is going crazier day by day, we can expect more of those lunatics to snap. The solution is to stop fuelling this political division, however i fear that slovak politicians (and not only politicians) are simply not mature enough to realise this, and instead of this normalisation they will go for more blame shifting and therefore more radicalisation, i wish that i will be proven wrong.
With regards of weapons. There are many weapons in slovakia, gun laws are pretty lax in comparison to rest of the europe, also getting some illegal guns in slovakia is very easy. However there is no culture of gun violence and there are no organised armed groups with political agenda (at least for now) - which is great. Which means that even if things will go south, it is still far from civil war, but some random lunatics are to be expected at this stage. We better get use to similar violent incidents (even if maybe not as significant) unless something changes in society for better.
This was long expected, it was not a matter of if, but when. I hope we can learn a lesson for the future, and steer our society to a better direction, because if not - god help us.

I thought it was interesting that the birth rate in Slovakia is only 1.64, which means even though it has a large rural population where children could be used on the farms, this does not reflect in the birth rate. Meanwhile, countries like Kazakhstan have increased their birthrates to 3.3 despite in the past being a soviet dumping ground for nukes and also suffering from a famine caused by Stalin. I mention this because these facts might pose a problem for Peter's arguments on the declining birth rates and how urbanisation causes a fall in birth rates because it isn't clear that a more rural country will have a high birth rate . It seems population decline or growth is determined by a multitude of factors. If it is as neat as Peter and others suggest, then surely you'd expect places like Slovakia to have increased birthrates because they are more rural, and you'd expect places like Kazakhstan, with the suppression of the native people and impact of environmental disasters, to have a declining birthrate but the opposite is true.

Young people are leaving the country, so even if they have children - it is often in their new countries. Also for starting a family you need stable situation, at least housing - which in slovakia is very difficult. More than half of young slovaks live with their parents (which is the highest in europe) because housing is a big problem. For example, prices of apartments in bratislava are double those in NYC when adjusted accordingly to incomes, and the rest of the country is no better. Can you imagine if the prices in NYC were double and the rest of the country was pretty much in the same situation? Even then the bratislava is one of the most affordable places in slovakia (depending on your job) because the difference in incomes vs difference in house prices is more favourable in bratislava - higher prices but much higher incomes.
