- Join me on a rugged backroad adventure in Marion County, Georgia, as we navigate the aptly named Mud Road in my 2021 Jeep Gladiator Mojave. This isn’t just a drive; it’s a journey through history, uncovering the secrets of the land as we go.
Our expedition begins with challenging muddy patches that test the mettle of the Gladiator, leading us to the ruins of an old homesite hidden away from the beaten path. As we explore the remnants, we uncover traces of lives once lived here, now reclaimed by nature.
Continuing down Mud Road, the evidence of former homesites mounts-even though the structures themselves have disappeared, their stories linger in the scattered debris and overgrown foundations.
Further along, our path is crossed by a creek flowing directly over the road. After a careful investigation, I decide to take the plunge and drive through, adding a splash of excitement to our adventure!
The journey doesn’t stop there. We push forward, encountering more mud and finally reaching an old tenant farmer house. Nearby, we find ruins that hint at a once-large farm operation, providing a glimpse into the agricultural history of the region.

Some of the people who lived in that house in its heyday planted flowers to mark the path leading to the house. Maybe like we have balloons 🎈 marking the location of the birthday party. Miss Plantation Lady, your flowers are still blooming. You haven't been forgotten. Robert, I wonder if there was a family cemetery on that property. Thanks to the timber people for not knocking down the chimney.

Hmm, I looked that up to be sure, and have to agree with you. I grew glads in Albuquerque but they wouldn't stand erect, so only had them one year.---My guess on that plant was a Dutch Iris.

We will have them in Arkansas in July and August. You get used to them and don't even notice. Just background noise.

That rose is the rambler rose 'Excelsea'. It dates to early 1900s.
That leafy plant is a parrot gladiolus. Typical of old homesites.

@@AdventuresIntoHistory those old plants can be used to date homesites.lf you see dark pink and light pink rambling roses they are Dorothy Perkins and Lady Godiva respectively. They have been around about 120 years. They would go great with your Old Byrd Farm.

Gladiola. That jeep will get you where you need to go. I drove a mail route with 85% of muddy roads. It will go!
In Minnesota we have ditches on each side of dirt roads. Helps with erosion. However, my cousin from northern Minnesota had mud vacation every spring because the school buses could not get through.
I would recommend keeping a pair of shoes in your Jeep that you don't mind getting wet for wading in water like that just in case of glass etc.

I lived for two years in Wilcox County, somewhat southeast of Marion. There were very many unpaved roads there. Every time it rained you could call them Mud Road. I did the 2010 census there and I went all over the county. Never saw such poverty in my life. I drove over many "Mud Roads" doing census work in a 1995 Honda minivan and when it was over I promised myself two things: 1. I would never do census work again. @. I would move out of Wilcox County.

Robert, I believe you should do this in more counties and go to different counties and show us these old back roads and history it would be awesome. Just a thought.

They tore down an old country store out where I live and I got a couple of the old hand hewn beams out of it and use them for benches

I lived in the Mojave Desert. We had paved roads with no bridges. When it rained the washes filled up. Sometimes we had a small amount of rain going across the road. Sometimes we had a lot of rain going across the road. I went over in a Grand Am and found myself bobbing a bit. A car got washed off the road shortly after I went across and there had to be a water rescue. There was a car in the wash half buried for the dirt and rocks. I never went that way again where there was a big rain. Your Jeep Mojave is perfect for the desert and water crossings as long as they are not too deep.

Finding those fallen houses and land sights just makes me wonder who lived there and where they came from and where they went. I'm so glad you are keeping that happening from the Old Byrd Farm. That will be seen and fully functional when you get it all fixed up. Thank you for the tour.
Same here. I wonder who the people were and what kind of life they lived. How far away was the market, school, church, their family? How many generations lived there? Where did they originally come from? Their names. I can almost hear the children playing, running through the yard. Gosh, the list and questions go on. They must've been hearty folks, living that far out. Probably knew no other way.

When I was in the Navy, I attended a technical school in Memphis. We used to march in formation to and from class. On morning the Chief in charge of the morning formation picked a "June Bug" off a tree that he got to chirp by gently squeezing it, and used it to call cadence. 😂

I'm guessing the boll weevil cleared out alot of those plantations and farms, but sometimes things like the location of the railroad in a nearby town or businesses moving will change where people live.

I have tinnitus really bad from aircraft noise and I'm hearing impaired. Damn! Those cicadas are loud. It's cool seeing that much abandonment and the state old property falls into.

I think that one plant with the pointy leaves/stems is Iris. Like daffodils they come from bulbs. They are both very hearty and go on forever. Deer and other wildlife don't usually eat them.

When you come across some of the old flowers and wildflowers you should take a start from them to plant at OBF. May be some of them are kinda scarce and you can bring them back and decorate the property at the same time. Love all your videos!!!

When I was a kid (I'm 70 now) we would go down in the hills of eastern Oklahoma where my parents were from. We would go to visit my granny. There was a creek that crossed the road. We would all have to get out and wade across the creek. Only the driver stayed in the car. All of us in it made it too heavy. It was an old heavy car, but wasn't a Jeep! Also I always wondered where the people that lived there so long ago got the wisteria from? It's not native so was it mail order or sold locally?
Well, that invasive type is from China. Kudzu, another awful invasive plant is from Japan, I think. Someone had it in the World's Fair in the late 1800's- early 1900's (not sure of the date off hand). It was being touted as an attractive ground cover. People started planting it and it spread southward to the southern states. They didn't realize what a terrible plant it was in those climates. So maybe wisteria came from China that way or maybe someone brought cuttings over from there, people saw it, thought it was beautiful and that was the start of it.
