Like 10,000 other people this past couple of weeks (I noted your subscriptions when one of your wonderful videos was suggested to me by YT a couple of weeks ago), I am a new convert to your channel - thank you for your wonderful poetry and insights into the world of Tolkien etc. I also decided pipe smoking seemed worth a try! 2 weeks ago I had never given it a go, but today I received my third pipe, a Peterson Lestrade. I sat on my patio in the cool Berkshire morning, and with my novice skills, enjoyed a lovely Kendal aromatic. The Peterson is truly a wonderful pipe. Yet when I enjoyed this morning pipe smoke, I had no idea it was International Pipe Smoking Day! So thank you again Malcolm, for enlightening me! Best Regards, Alastair.
Bosun cut plug is what you want Alastair, one of the oldest gawith blends still in production, and you will see why. It is like time travelling to the victorian era and unlike any aromatic you have ever smoked before.
A patio, porch, hammock or riverside are all wonderful places for a peaceful pipe, and what a wonderful story of you doing so on the day meant for it of all days! Welcome aboard, friend.🤜🤛❤️
Funny, that’s my exact story, stumbled upon his video a month ago, never smoked a pipe before. Now I’ve ordered three pipes and several types of tobacco, and ordered the Hobbit and the Lord of The Rings books to enjoy while I smoke. I am having the darndest times figuring out how to light and get a good amount of smoke from my pipe though. As a cigar smoker, I like to get a great deal of smoke and a good draw and been a frustrating start.
Got a vintage custombilt pipe and some well aged Northwoods tobacco on the agenda later today, with a cup of good coffee and a quiet hour's contemplation. It's a lost art these days, but for those of us who still appreciate it, there are many moments spent with a pipe that are more full, more present, and more lived than whole busy days I've spent at work.
Hard to imagine this man was once a little boy playing around with his friends after grade school, just like the rest of us humans. Who knows how you’ll turn out one day.
Thank You Malcolm. “Smoke Rings from my Pipe” is how I discovered you, a while back. Never gets old. I quote it often, usually simply “practice the art of sitting still.”
Thanks to this video, I have decided to become a pipe smoker this year at age 49. I noticed that some of my favorite writers like CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien and C. Jung all smoked pipes, and Charles Spurgeon with his cigars…so of course I finally decided to join the brotherhood. That’s probably how YT’s algorithm recommended this channel. I’ve bought my first Peterson system standard pipe 307, and after hearing Mr. Guite read this poem, I’ve also now purchased this same book. Just so that I can read it while a smoke a pipe just like he did in this video. I’m going all in!
I do not smoke, but I love this poem and the idea of ending the day practicing "the art of simply sitting still" while doing something I love (for me it's drinking a frosted glass of root beer). Some of the most impactful moments of my life have been those of quiet solitude where my mind takes me to wisdom I did not know existed. I'm so glad to have found this channel.
a poem for Malcolm Guitte: A legend of our times reaching through the smoke and forming exquisite rhymes a seer of truths, a constitution unshakable as treebeard's roots tastes exquisite, choosing only the best, Who else could pull off that stylish waistcoat vest.
Was so happy to receive Parables and Paradox for Father’s Day last year. I plan to have a copy of that poem framed to hang in my home office. I’ve given up my pipes for Lent, but I will take them up again on Easter, and enjoy a bowl and read this poem as I do. God bless and have a wonderful IPSD.
I think the world would be a better place if we all sat and practiced being still. Amen for the lost art of pipe smoking! I hope that art comes back. Happy Pipe Day Sir!
Had a bowl in my Peterson 317 to celebrate while walking home from my local pub having been by an open fire for an hour or so. Sitting with a bottle of McEwans Champion in front of the woodburner at home, and what better time for this video to arrive! Cheers Malcolm - and happy IPSD to you as well!
Back in December of 1967 after I was 'requested' to join the U.S. Army, during breaks in training we were told "light them if you have them", cigarettes. I didn't like the taste or the smoke getting closer to my face, same with my next choice, cigars. So I tried a pipe, I have been smoking them ever since. Often too many in a day due mostly to boredom. Now I limit myself to two a day and find them more enjoyable. I also enjoy your readings, a pleasant period in my day. I have been buying books since then also but don't always read them right away. I have never read much poetry but I have a large hardcover book of 1000 Irish poems that I haven't read yet. I think it is time to take it out of the bookcase and immerse myself in a new to me literary experience. Thank you Malcolm for your many inspirations. Happy ISPD to all here.
I applaud you for you honest self assessment. I think we all behave similarly at times; indulging too much in the having books without putting in the time to absorb their contents. Cheers to you on your journey one page at a time!
I can't accurately describe why this is my new favorite youtube channel, but the vibes are immaculate and so is Mr. Guite. Gonna listen to him talking about pipes and reading poetry and Tolkien while I do my work from now on.
I recall in the memoirs of Eugene Sledge (a man who fought with the US Marines in the bitter fight to wrest control of the Pacific islands from the Japanese in the Second World War) he explains his taking to pipe smoking during this period. Pipe smoking for him was something like the antithesis of the brutal horrors he experienced during the War - a peaceful, contemplative, civilised act.
I was a Marine before I knew of Sledge. The cool mornings in the desert before the sun came along to ruin our day, I used to enjoy my grandfathers pipe. Also a US Marine from the Second World War. That pipe sits on my desk today, along with my harmonica and a helmet for my pillow. It doesn’t escape me how I watched the dragon die only to become the dragon with my own smoke escaping my nostrils. Always Faithful
I listen attentively to his videos while smoking my cigar. The friendly personality, enlightening stories, melodious voice and calm demeanour anchors me. I may move onto a pipe one day, it would save me a small fortune from the cost of the cigars haha.
i must say malcolm. a year ago today i lost my grandfather and have been missing him something terribly. his humor and wisdom he would give me always made me happy. he was a big cigar enjoyer and i think just maybe his spirit sent your channel to me on the night of his passing to make me happy again. thank you for being you sir.
Thanks to finding your channel, I just started The Hobbit for the first time today and you are jumping out at me every time they mentioned pipes during the unexpected party. Enjoy your pipe!
I have started painting my kitchen this week... Only bit by bit. It will take me a week to finish but listening to you Sir while I toil makes work light and happy.
Whenever your videos pop up, I save them for the end of the day so I can watch them and smoke my pipe. Happy international pipe smoking day Malcolm! Smoke rings away!
I just picked up a Parker Golden Poker (283) and have spent the last three days cleaning, refinishing and finally smoking today. Your poetry celebrates my pipe's new look and life.
Malkome thank you so much for your poem and Smoke rings. Today in celibrations, l with my good lady wife, smoked my lided Petersons with shire pipe weed, in the Butiful gardens at the RSPB headquarters near Sandy. The snowdrops, dafs and some early rodoes were in bloom. Utter paradise! Blessings to you Ken
Beautiful writing. Thank you for your videos. As I am trying to distance myself from the whingers and whiners that exist on the internet your videos are a great reminder of eloquence and tranquility. Slowly inspiring me to read more and write more. Thank you sir 🙂
Im new to this pipe smoking community. But loving the time to read and write that comes with it. Looks like this evening a good scotch and pipe await me.
Just sitting here enjoying at slightly breezy, 70 degree evening on a back porch somewhere in Alabama after a not-so-hard-day's work (if I'm being honest)......smoking my pipe, sipping on Clyde May's whiskey, and listening to a wonderful poem that is in danger of being drowned out by the Deep South's "Year of the Cicada." So glad I picked up the pipe (less than a week ago), as the poem, regardless of minimal durational experiential knowledge, has taken on a relatable meaning that otherwise would have been unbeknownst to a "simple kinda man."
I'd just like to say thank you Sir for this channel. It's fantastic! I've never really had an interest in readings or poetry, but that doesn't matter. Your voice is soothing, and I could happily listen to it for hours. It takes me back to my Grandads private room, the smell of books, and pipes. Pure nostalgia. ❤
rolling up to this, i resonate with your words. for these beautiful moments we are in the same room, smoking together! the soul is ripe and we kindle our fire
Cheers Malcolm. Even though it’s a cold rainy day here in Las Vegas it was a great surprise to see a video from you. I packed my cob with some fine tobacco and made a cup of tea as I sit on the patio listening and watching the video enjoying my pipe. However, the noise from the U.S. Air Force Base as the jets fly overhead makes it difficult to hear. But, it’s the sound of freedom. Thanks for the video.
Power cut in my local area today, I've had an analogue day, the first of which I can remember. Read some Terry Pratchett, dinner by candlelight and made brews with a camping stove. Anyway, just wanted to say that as my laptop battery only lasts about 10-15 minutes these days I thought it fitting that that time should be spent watching Malcolm. Once power is restored I'll be back amongst the all insistent trill, but today at least , I stood still.
This poem never gets old, my friend. I love hearing it. I knew I'd not get the chance to smoke today, so I loaded up twice yesterday to make up for it and tried to blow smoke rings out back while reading Ordinary Saints. BTW, I received a copy of Parable and Paradox this weekend. I have been particularly moved by the "Five Dialogues on the Two Great Commandments" cycle, especially "IV With All Your Mind." Thank you so much for those. Great meditations.
My goodness, what a blessing that I have found your wonderful place on RUclips. Enjoy the pipe, enjoy the pint, as shall I. All that wander are not lost, I am indeed happy that I found your smoky wonderful channel.
Your videos are amazing. You represent a part of the British culture that I fear is slowly dying and being diluted by "multiculturalism" and technology. I'm late 20s now and hope I'm just like you when i'm older. Your videos are my introduction to pipe smoking. I've always wished cigarettes were healthier and perhaps pipe smoking can be my new weekend hobby. I'd really like to see a video all about getting started - some recommendations on pipes, tobaccos and techniques. Thank you!
I just had a shipment of "Tombigbee" from Country Squire arrive today in the mail. Smoked a bowl of it earlier this afternoon. Now that I have learned that it is international pipe smoking day, I think I'll have another - with a Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale!
Hey Malcom, this is so crazy, I started watching your videos than was very eager to smoke pipes, I'm trying to stop smoking tobacco cigarettes, two days ago, I bought a pipe and started smoking, today I see now that it was in the international pipe-smoking day, this is crazy! thank you very much for your art and videos, it's wonderful! greets from Brasil.
I'm learning how to read poetry from you Malcolm. I've always been afraid of it before this. Perhaps giving it too much reverence, if that's possible. So on this IPSD, as I light my Stanwell, I say THANK YOU, Malcolm, for all you have given me !
First timer here. This was fun, and couple of nice lines in that poem as well. Perhaps i will pack my worries into a pipe and blow them away as well...
This man is a world treasure. There is so much to learn from his demeanor alone that would improve a person’s everyday life. Thank you.
'I pack them in tobacco leaves' wonderful line!

A wonderful comment and a cheers from me !
“The false idea that there’s a race to run” really stuck out to me idk why
Same. I roll out of bed onto the hamster wheel, and I never question it.
We all are running the rat's race mate, but as a wise man once said, "The race is long, and in the end, it is only with yourself"....

Cheers to you and your fine gift of poetry, Sir - you calm the soul and ground us to the blessed earth. Thank you, and happy smokes!
a poem for Malcolm Guitte:
A legend of our times
reaching through the smoke and forming exquisite rhymes
a seer of truths,
a constitution unshakable as treebeard's roots
tastes exquisite, choosing only the best,
Who else could pull off that stylish waistcoat vest.

Sounds like a lovely idea in a special place 😀, can't beat a Bottle of Mcs.
The only thing better than enjoying a good pipe and a good poem, is watching and listening to you Malcolm. Take care fella.
'Practice the art of simply sitting still' ...wonderful, thank you for letting us drop in, good sir.

The stories they could tell of all the peace that I just found.

The false idea there's a race to run. Fantastic line about the modern day life.
Thanks to finding your channel, I just started The Hobbit for the first time today and you are jumping out at me every time they mentioned pipes during the unexpected party.
Enjoy your pipe!
Welcome aboard!
I have started painting my kitchen this week... Only bit by bit. It will take me a week to finish but listening to you Sir while I toil makes work light and happy.

Just wonderful, all of it.
I quite love your library! Very Cozy!
"Thank God I have this briar bowl to fill / I leave this world...and let it go, in smoke rings from my pipe" Outstanding!
Wonderful! A perfect end to a weary day. I'll get my churchwarden thanks Malcolm
That was charming. Thank you for sharing. Cheers, brother.
I just picked up a Parker Golden Poker (283) and have spent the last three days cleaning, refinishing and finally smoking today. Your poetry celebrates my pipe's new look and life.
Im looking to carve my own natural pipes soon from uniquely shaped sticks. A wonderful pass time
Malkome thank you so much for your poem and Smoke rings.

A joyous IPSD to you from a fellow piper. Enjoy your bowls!
My own Peterson pipe arrived with some Kendal Black Cherry. Excellent video to enjoy both to.

Malcolm, you tickled my spirit with the playful way you smoked your pipe.

Happy pipe-smoking day, Malcolm. Thank you for the lovely poem.

Wonderful poem!

Breathtaking poem. No pun intended. I could sit all day listening to you read your work.
