In response to the government's shortcomings, millions of Britons have embraced voluntary work to survive. This marks the rise of the "Big Society," a concept championed in 2010 by then-Prime Minister David Cameron-the very architect of the austerity policy!

I find myself in tears, I left Buchanan Street Blackpool in 1965 for mainland Europe. What a town it was.
It's a "Let them eat cake!" monarchy. But the British still want to keep the Royals for the Costume & Jewelry Shows they put on to wow their subjects, and to attract the tourists, even if they have to starve and freeze to death to keep them in their luxurious lifestyles in their ever-growing numbers!
I am from a family with several spending their careers in service at BP and KP. They are not even monarchy supporting anymore EVEN though they personally thought the Queen was lovely and nice. They saw the unreal luxury and army of govt employees basically who serve the family. The billionaire Monarchy in its present form must be reformed.
What utter nonsense. The "democratically elected" government has enough money from us - dear taxpayer - to run the country properly 10 x over. It's only due to their ineptitude, cronyism and short sightedness that we're in this mess. There are way too many pigs at the trough and they all want to be boss. At least with the monarchy there was only 1 boss.

You only rarely hear of a tourist meeting a royals in England, despite the number of them. But you can run into certain ones of them in America (mainly New York City and Palm Beach).
But I guess that is very much beside the point, and does nothing for the UK since their ££ are converted to $$ and spent on luxuries in the US.

emergency" that was us. The big thing was debt all kinds of it, cars mortgage (although our home isn't a high price one), student loans for our kids, and of course credit cards.
One day we just got sick of being broke and went total scorched earth and became frugal overnight. Paid it all off, it took almost 5 years but now we have no debt and this year our savings rate is 50% on basically the same income that had us perpetually broke. So for us it is mainly staying out of debt and watching our spending, at first it was a real effort to save in our HISA and 401Ks but now it's actually fun watching our money grow. No car or vacation or neighborhood is worth being broke or financially unstable.

Im in shock, this is unbelievable. I was told by an English woman who came to the Caribbean to work on career break that she will not be going back to England as the situation was bad economic wise. As it was better in the Caribbean.But then I thought she was lying. This documentary ten to support her many stories. Now I realize why they don't want to return. Yet my regional folks are leaving in droves for England.

As a retired Brit living in Canada, I have seen economies move from manufacturing to knowledge based. This has virtually killed the working class hence the increase in poverty. This, coupled with Tory governments selling off national utilities and labor governments mismanagement, is how we got here. As usual, the poor and the immigrants will get the blame while the politicians gloat in their ivory towers.

I’ve watched a lot of documentaries on Britain and it’s so sad that people who really need help don’t get the help. Then I saw people basically having huge families so they could screw the system and not work and get so much money for each kids. Those people f** ked up for the people in real need.
surely it cant be the people spending all the government moneys on extravagant parties and absurdly fancy architecture. if you see a european city and a city anywhere else on earth, you know exactly where the majority of their money is going. to displays of wealth. not to helping anyone from dying in poverty
The Royals also ignore the plight of BRITISH veterans. They do the photops with children, go to specifically chosen elder care facilities or nice veteran’s homes. They lend their influence and name to various charities, but there are never reports of the CHANGES any of this brings. Parties simply raising more money with little accountability where every pound GOES is rife for financial shenanigans. This is why the late DIANA was respected. She refused to simply do sanitized photops for charity which were designed mostly to help the Royal NOT the victims of misfortune. DIANA did much off camera and against her “advisers.” Some of the fruit her efforts bore are evident today. So this is one piece, just one piece, of where changes need to be made.

This is just shameful that the UK government fails day after day, decade after decade. Local Council's and Municipalities are also to blame and not only the leaders but the staff who follow inane policies without question or conscience. So glad to see this information shared so people can understand and hopefully elect MPs with a heart and a sense of community purpose and not those seeking publicity and a stepping stone to making more money in the private sector.
I lived in the UK in the past. I visited again this Christmas and was shocked by the number of homeless people I witnessed. I was heartbroken to see middle aged people begging for a penny. I saw other signs of poverty, deterioration of infrastructure, fall in the quality of transport services and other things. I love the UK and have been dreaming of returning there, but I wonder if it is really worth it. I do not know if London has been worse since Brexit, but the North where I stayed has taken a turn for the worse demonstrably. It makes me very sad that Brexit happened the way it did and the UK government still has the nerve to publish on its websites news bulletins regarding the "benefits" of Brexit and the "freedoms" of Brexit. Why did it have to be like that? I was really surprised by the run-down appearance of many things I remembered in much better condition in the past. The only thing I hope is that we rebuild bridges between the two sides of the Channel. maybe slowly, gradually and with small steps of good faith, but it is necessary and the only way ahead.

2.5 years ago we left UK for Usa. We were shocked how expensive life here is and we live in NJ. We are a family of 5 and from our experience you need an income of 300k per year minimum to live comfortably.

And my life here has been more comfortable and happy than it was back there in Northern Ireland and England. I did live in England for almost ten years back in the day. I found it quite easy to adapt to life here although the language is very difficult to pick up especially as most locals want to practice their English with me. As for racism I haven't personally experienced much of that, a little bit from old people during the pandemic but it was the mildest form of racism. They would run away. Mostly people are just curious. What do I like better than Ireland/UK? I have a great job, free apartment and 20 weeks of fully paid holidays.

Whether I will ever move there or not, I’m unsure. The US is really falling short these days. It’s rather sad.

Here in the States, we are billed once a month for heating and cooling by the local electric company. The bills are vastly larger and most people can't pay them because there is too much out of their pocketbook. You're not alone.

This was the same in Australia. I know what this is like. Exactly. I lost eight years income because my job centre provider told me that I was too old to get a job. At the time I was 55 years old. They never helped me get work. They just wanted the large contract given them by the government. Shameful.

I'm so glad we don't have those prepaid meters here in Australia we just get our electric and gas direct debited each week. Also it's illegal in Australia to cut people's power even for non payments. I lived in the UK for a year in the late 90s and things definitely weren't this bad then. The cost of living has gone up here too but thankfully it's not as bad here. Hubby and I work and have kids who are nearly all adults. We still rent though but we are thankful
The norm is a quarterly bill in Australia for utilities. You can organise to pay off in instalments if unable to pay before the due date.

and UK is way more expensive than both of the north american countries canada and US. In US and canada an average 2000 sq ft home is like 400K USD in cheaper suburbs it’s like 250-300K, in UK that’s like 800,000 POUNDS which is like a million USD.
Wages are shockingly low in the UK. When I was assigned to work there for an American corporation, I found that British employees were paid approx 60% of the salaries of workers of commensurate skill in America. We were told not to discuss it - another outrage, because you cannot impose that type of silence in America.
But the cost of living was as high as in America.

@@newname2600 I found 4-5 bed 2000 sq ft Homes under 400K Dollars in Chicago, Dallas, and Minneapolis which are all big cities and I found 2000 sq ft homes in both Calgary and Edmonton for under 550K USD or 750K Canadian. Even in some rural parts of UK you can’t get those prices for the same size.

They need to learn to join families. Share resources. Britain being a cold country most of the year, heating will be the biggest draw from salaries. Learn to share homes folks. Things are not pretty in a lot of countries these days. There's a reason why we Indians live in with parents and some even with Grand parents.
Moving to smaller homes that require less heating is another solution, but that won't be pretty in a few years. Inflation is going up everywhere.
It's complicated as the brits fart like pigs all the time and they don't support each others. Indian also fart but they're used to filthy as the take "bath" in the big sewer ganges.

There needs to be many more like him...never think you can't change something...you just need to have the courage & character to. Churches used to take care of desperate and needy people (it's why they aren't taxed in America), but in UK and some other European countries, they chased religion out, and Christianity especially, who are obligated to take care of the needy. So you have fewer churches, and thus fewer charities to take care of these people. It now falls on the government, and they don't do squat.
Yes England has thousands of closed, sold old historic church buildings. We are no longer a God fearing nation and it shows everywhere.

Those officiating did not honor Him as such. The Royal Christmas cards do not honor CHRISTmas at all. I say these things to indicate how firm and acceptable is the lack of respect for real Christianity in the UK. The Royals are not even questioned about this by “fervent” Christians. The transportation system is a nightmare in the US as well when my parents died. I actually had to sell the house and move 10 minutes away so that I could get transit because I’m blind unfortunately, right after I moved, they knocked down half of the routes for the disabled routes meaning I had to stop working, because I could not afford to go to work, and when I did go to work, I actually ended up paying to go to work because Just going across the street you think Lyft or Uber cost about $10 so around roof is $20 walk across the street . The buses that we have for the disabled. Also you can end up riding around on them for three hours. It’s really a nightmare so to go to a single doctors appointment can take you all day and will you’ll end up waiting at the doctors for hours because they can’t wait for you, so you have to make sure that you give them like a two hour Headstart when you want pick up it’s it’s crazy I’ve actually canceled appointments just because transportation is too costly or too hard for me to deal with and now we are having drug shortages and I’ve had to pay triple with my location used to be three months ago and it was pay the extra price I don’t get it

I can’t believe how bad it’s all become in England - yet the government seem to only worry about climate change which further pushes up costs for the poor and middle class , when the middle class has to watch the pennies there’s a real big problem at hand that needs immediate addressing . When you start work, dont get credit cards, dont get credit on anything, live off your pay, dont be envious of your neighbours because they are the ones in debt and it will only get worse for them, they may look happy but they are not. You will grow save money and enjoy life without the fear of a knock on the door.
