Came into comments to say how great this dude is.. see a bunch of comments bashing him for being an SRV copycat.. wow. Unbelievable how fast other musicians are to put someone down. He clearly draws a lot of influence from SRV.. loves the Strat.. and loves that tone. This is by far the closest to SRV’s tone I’ve ever heard on RUclips. If he’s playing on something that’s not a Dumble or Two Rock.. I say fuckin rock on brother. Strat sounds impeccable and playing is great.
Not bashing this guy but he's a good player nothing special tho..he's got that "Srv ish" type thing going on but he's missing the biggest key! It's in the hands! Check out Tommy Katona he's the closet we get to Stevie in this lifetime! This guy uses heavy strings and all the other Mumbo jumbo that comes along with the perception of Stevie's tone! You can use 9 gauge and get the same tone! I can go a lot more in depth but yea he's good but not the best tone trust that
707king I totally agree!!! There are people who don't even play well at all, or professionally and dare to bash this guy. Well, "This dude" has done his personal, and professional homework, and understands "HIS" guitar, a Stratocaster, and knows exactly what sound he wants and desires out of it, therefore playing the way he plays. Let's face it, the guy is an awesome player. He feels it to the bone!!! And expresses himself with a strat. Also let us face another fact, there are people who are humbucking , Gibson LP lovers, and then there are the single coil, Stratocaster lovers. I respect both worlds, and detest folks who bash, put down Stratocasters, and people who play them just because THEY are not into that "Strat"world. It's a shame really. I knew some musicians in LA, Hollywood who just played The hunmbucking type guitars and when you pulled out a Stratocaster single coil, they would look at you like, "Your going to play that!! ", "it doesn't have enough balls to pull through" Well, I love the sound of a Gibson LP, but Fender Stratocasters do it for me, because I can play rock, pop, Jazz, and much more on my fender Stratocaster. And don't put anybody down for using a different set up!!!!! What is more important is the music you put out with that instrument. THAT'S where the balls come into play...
Summary: The tips are tune to Eb with a heavier gauge string, treble bleed cap on vol pot, use vintage wound pickups for best and compensate with low output via either a clean boost or compensated amp settings, lower pickup height to reduce magnetic interference, Hendrix/Rory Gallagher hand wah effect neck pickup woman tone max treble roll off and flick 5 way switch back and forth from open bridge pickup to neck pu, Love what you do (he showed that even of he didn't say it :P ) Dan the Man seems like a charming fellow as well as an excellent player
@@ashthegreat1 *face palm* ....i could comment on why your anology makes no sense.... but im sure every single other guitarist here just saw it and rolled their eyes also
@Odell Mateo I can totally imagine that people will take this as a negative comment too. The amount of criticism people can take now a days is minimal.
Love this guys tone and playing. Shame guitar players are so toxic and rip into him in the comments. Bet the people writing those comments can barely string two notes together...
I don't really care what people sound like. It is all about about getting out there, playing, making music and having a good time! All music is great no matter who is making it, and taking the time to share this stuff on the tube is noble.
I wouldn't even say its just guitar players or specific to this video, this is how RUclips/social media is in general. Everyone always looking to complain, judge, or hate on everything they see.
I just got a strat yesterday, played it at the store as it was in standard and had .10s on. Got home and couldn't feel it out right, turned to eb, magic!. Strings ever so slightly lighter, tone is fat, amazing how big little change makes.
@@GuyNarnarian yes they do, also bend bit better: about 10-15 yrs.ago I used 11s, dropped 1/2 step, for yrs. Only on my Strats,, just like u were saying they feel s bit slinkyer, EXPECIALLY when u got jumbo fret wire, Helps with bigger bends ala SRV .Trower drops a full step down. Higher action.
ABSOLUTELY! EXPECIALLY when u got older even a reissue WOW, yep u always get compliments how good the Neck on my 62' sounds.its all original.I didn't want like a " Texas specials",,, .Nope....Not 4 me...:Agree with you,,,BEST SOUND IS Good neck pup.
'Tone is everything' my friend...well said...comes from the pick, fingers, amp, guitar and heart. I met SRV back in 86...nice guy...was really passionate about his craft...even gave me a couple tips...played for me and told me that he listens to Jimi Hendrix every day and learns something from him everyday...he had strong hands and told me to try using the fat part of the pick and certainly believed in Eb tuning...never forget it...he must have been having a good day
@@Zocrates8 no I don’t think so I’ve heard lots of stories of him doing similar stuff (like just being really nice) so I think that was just the type of person he was
As someone who is still very much a beginner I greatly appreciate his insight and style of playing. Everyone's some kind of expert in the comments section, but the fact that we all are watching says it all. Thanks for the content and I'm loving the tone!
@@robertwhitcomb6105 What most folks mean by hard to play or having to fight a strat is because the fretboard radii are so tight as compared to other guitars. 7.25 and 9.5 inch radii and the horrible compound radius Fender used/uses are the typical with a more rare 10 inch and now aways, on a very few special models (Boxer strat), a 12 inch radius. Other brands typically start around 12 inch and go as flat as 16 inch, like Ibanez. The flatter the radius, the easier it is to play. Especially fast. I do love strats. They are all I own but, I do wish they would flatten the necks out quit a bit.
Nice trick--worthy of Roy Buchanan, who doubtless would have figured it out--if he had played a strat (tele's tone control has the same effect on both pickups).
this guy is a great player. sad I missed him on his recent UK tour. his strat I think is a 62 or 63 and he's had it a long time. it actually survived the 2005 floods in new Orleans. he put it on top of the fridge freezer in the hope it would and it did , albeit it with slight mould in the case. love a battle scarred strat.
Wes O'Neill the red Strat is the vintage one from the flood but he put its neck on this one (which is a custom shop) for some time (and I believe he may have retired it now)
Nice! A lot of great advice from a real player! I'm playing a 52 Tele to get that Albert Collins high in sound.Nevertheless your Strat sounds awesome and love the Licks! 😎
I was today years old when I discovered that you could use your selector switch to produce a wah effect!! Incredible playing and thank you for imparting your knowledge!
The “strat fights back” thing is something I’ve always said to people (who then look at me like I’m a moron). But it’s true. A strat makes you play. It doesn’t let any bullshit through. If I’m playing a gig where I NEED to be spot on, I’ll play my paul reed smith for most of the night. But if I’m playing a gig where I wanna be more considerate or more intentional, I’ll play a strat. I also do most of my practicing on a strat. If you can make it sound good on a strat, you can play it...that much is for sure.
I started on a Strat and it's what I play 98.9% of the time. I've never thought it was hard to play. Matter of fact I find it easier to play than all other guitars, except maybe a Tele.
Just ran across your video and I haven't finished watching it but i paused to chime in about what you say about the harmonics seeming richer in E flat. Maybe its the fact that 440hz is higher ,perhaps a half step higher than 432hz. Thoughts? Anyone
I think bad strats feel like you are fighting them. When you find one that feels right it feels good, not like you have to fight it. I dont mind that there are bad and good strats. You just gotta feel them out.
Can’t believe im reading negative comments about the guy ... to all those so called experts/internet bashers show us your chops ! Where are your records ? Where are your videos ? Come on quit yapping and show us your stuff !!!
Got my first Strat in 1968 . I agree with everything this Gentleman said . I string my Strats with .011's , tune to Eb , use stock pickups set low on the body ( they just sound sweeter like that ) , I EQ my amp with more Bass than Treble , and play thru a Fender Vibrolux amp ( Fender guitars sound better always with Fender amps ) !! This Gentleman knows exactly what he is talking about !
People bash people just because they can. This guy, love him or hate him gives more information than other yt videos. This is the first time i heard about him and i am so glad i did.
Ah dude.. You have got a paint chip just above the pick guard there. I wouldn't worry too much though, some even say that it's something to strive for. One thing I can't understand though, are there people in the room that he is talking to or not?
This video showcases the best sounding Stratocaster tone I've ever heard, dude. I'm in love with that - as you describe it - "jangly" tone that almost has that loose change sound on top of the note mixed with that funky Strat neck pickup tone every music fan knows. The only difference with yours is that you accentuate it even better. Yours sounds extra crispy and rusty... Dude I can think of 10 thousand words to describe that unique sound... crispy, rusty, raspy, metallic, jangly, greasy, sizzlin' steak... you name it. I don't care... I want my Strat to sound like that because it's awesome. TEACH ME...
I’m sure at some point there were haters in these comments but I’ve been scrolling down to find all but a community who stands behind you brother! Keep strummin’!
@@MyBodyWash U have no idea what I can do. I'm just not a fan of his anyway. There's nothing there that I can't do and I can play upside down even. Eruption upside down....ruclips.net/video/5kCgAYP4bJM/видео.html
This guy has such an AMAZING Stratocaster tone! Seriously! And.....I hate it when people dog someone for sounding like someone else. We are all influenced by someone. I would love to have this guys chops and tone. And you can bet that I'm going to do some effort to copy him. I'm going to keep following this guy. Found some other youtube of his band. Really good stuff. Great voice too!
One thing people should know about using .13's is they can seriously damage your Strat if you don't have it set up properly. The tension they cause is incredible. I learned that the hard way as a young kid trying to be the next SRV.
Sam Lee I would guess the neck torqued and bowed...generally that happens before any other part fails, and since everything is adjustable, a quarter turn or two in the right direction on the truss rod will fix it (unless you let it get too warped or it twists). You would also want to check out the spring situation in the rear cavity... with such heavy strings you may want an extra spring or two, or at least a bit of adjustment with a screwdriver to account for the extra tension. It's really more subtle than the commenter said, all strings exert a large amount of tension (more for heavier strings, but it's not crazy) and guitars are designed to take it. But it is certainly wise to do a fresh setup when changing string gauges, or you will find tuning issues plaguing you at the least and at the worst you may irreparably damage your nice guitar...
Seriously damage your guitar? Wtf are you talking about. It’s not so wacky crazy out of this world to use heavy strings on a guitar. You will not cause serious damage whatsoever.
Using heavy gauges, SRV also had a 4th spring on the temolo. A good setup would be needed if switching from light to heavy, or vice versa when you realize you're working harder than you need to.
I’m floored by the virtuoso playing, quality of expertise, and generosity of this player’s video here. I was transfixed- learned a ton in minutes. I went to like the video which I rarely do - But had to for this. I was shocked to see dislikes? So I looked at the comment , planning on coming to his defense forcefully. But then saw so many others having the same reaction I had. Thank you! You’re a GREAT player And it’s an extremely inspiring educational video!!
About 99 percent of the musicians I met while Playing I a band are haters of other musicians, and that’s the truth I like to talk and watch other musician who are better then me, and see what I can learn from their playing level. That’s just me.
ozzie houser I agree with u 100%, the funny thing is, when I went to play for my church, I got the same attitude as when I played in the local clubs, I could not believe it, the church is supposed to be a team, one body, build up each other, encourage each other, but again they had two guitar players who gave me their bad attitude.
Excellent playing, Dan. Love the SRV tone. Some very good insights about the Strat. I've been tuning down a half or whole step on all my guitars (acoustics, especially). This guy is taking the time to speak from the heart about his experiences with the instrument in a way that is both interesting and informative. How in the world can anyone have a problem with that? I'd really love to see a video by one of the idiots who trashed this guy. They must just be astonishing guitar players. Seriously, if one of you trash-talkers made a guitar video that you think is so much better, why don't you just attach a link right here?
awesome tone, great playing and a really nice approach. i'm really thankful to have met Dan Patlansky, fantastic player and a generous man. keep rocking, mate!
This is the ultimate, coolest name for a guitar channel, no argument even possible; had to subscribe. Regarding string gauge, see Rick Beato's great vid from early 2020. The notion that thicker strings yield thicker, fatter tone is just another guitara myth.
Bigger strings hold a bit more bass low end so they are indeed a sound changer I don't know to what level to the common ear probably not going to hear much but you can definitely tell a tone difference between 8s and 13 on a strat at least a little come on that's ridiculous why does a bass sound like a guitar or do the strings matter?
@@Stereostupid If you're using lower tunings, a heavier guage string will have more tension to match the same pitch, which is why it's difficult to tune your guitar real low with 8s
Ok so my 2 cents is ... First time iv ever heard him I love his tone and playing along with his love , passion and study of the history of guitars and their playing. I'm off to find a video of his live stuff . Thank you for making this video!
Thank gawd for the fretwire comment! I been years going nuts with my hands saying I can only really play guitars with large fretwire. Otherwise I fret with missing notes on chords and trust me I’ve sat and moved my hands to all locations. On my strat I cant even feel the strings the fret wire is so low. Probably why I love Ibanez RGs. Soon as the fret wire is larger all my problems go away, especially fretting chords and bending. I came here as a last resort to get my strat to play and sound good. Thanks for the advice 😁👍🥂✌️
Mad Minute You HAVE heard the pickup selector wah, you just didn't know it. Hendrix uses it in some parts on Voodoo Chile (beginning of the solo on the long 2nd fret bend).
Meh.. He's made everything to make it sound as trebly as possible, sounds like shit with too much treble imho. I mean come on, it's still a strat, it's gonna be trebly.. the wha trick is cool tho :)
After reading some of the comments in here I just felt compelled to say "What the fk are you doing here then?". I mean if you hate his style and SRV and strats and everything else about people who play like this then how did you get here and why did you not only stay to watch this but then continued on to write a bitchy comment about it? Just because you have a right to do something and can doesn't mean you should. Seriously, why, what's the point? I would just go watch something else that I enjoy. You can reply if you like but I won't bother responding, just so you know, because I will be doing something else more productive and enjoyable than that.
Only jaleous people that have fun always destroying work of others...may be they are somehow sexualy frustrated or so ..and unhappy with their wifes or life...they need to always put down others to feel better...this guy is amazing think twice guys before writting bullshit comments...and if you can do better share with us your videos so that it will be our turn to laugh at you 😂...well done with this video I'm absoluetly fan!
Well said. Jealousy sums it all up. I greatly appreciated this video. As a beginner, I'm always looking into the different play styles and setups various guitarists have. If I'm not vibing with what I'm watching... then I move on to the next one.
To me... this guys knowledge of the Strat is awesome, and to me... he's a really great player, I love what he's doing, and to me... what a great sound, tone, and everything. Very very cool playing, well done dude.
I played with pick up height adjustments also to get a better tone on my Less Paul. I prefer lower as well. Further from the string allows the true undistorted voice of the string to come through. He explained it in the video as allowing the string to properly oscillate uninterrupted by the magnets in the pickups so he is right on the money about that! He is extremely knowledgeable on many levels! Thank you for sharing your knowledge sir!
Thanks, Dan and The Guitar Magazine. Awesome presentation. For that you get a subscription from me. Great advice on all levels. I've never seen the pickup selector wah-wah thing before. lol What you are saying about lowering the pickups makes total sense too. And like you, I'm enjoying the hot pickups less and less. I do like humbuckers on a Strat though. I only have one of my four Strats left with standard single coils on it. Been experimenting with lots of different pup combinations. Two humbuckers, P-90/single/Humbucker, Hot Rails. All fun, but nothing seems to beat that vintage "under wound" bell-like tone. Prefer analog pedals too. And way less "syrupy" processing. I want my guitar to sound like a guitar.
I was trying to think of a response that would have qualified me as being an astute aficionado of succinct enlightenment but I humbly defer my subjective appraisement, momentarily. to say; You are a refreshing voice to those. as I am, who are lacking the talent but nonetheless continue to find that moment, that instant when you hit that right note, that right lick just like you heard it when you were a kid. I love the Strat. I love the Les Paul. Icons both now and forever. I'm worn out chasing the subtleties of the guitar. I suppose I've gone around my ass to get to my elbow when all I wanted to say was, thank you for this post.
Sure wish I could be accused of sounding "too much like Stevie Ray" Your guitar is set up exactly as my own including the treble bleed,, low pickup settings etc. but none of this is a secret. I learned most of this from the internet years ago and I thank those that helped us all to learn these gem like parts to great tone. High action and fat strings help to enable that jangly feeling that guys like Stevie Ray loved and were compelled by. Strats are magical and this guy has figured it out. Great video. I'm subscribed and am looking forward to seeing more..... Thanks.
Super fast hybrid picking. Takes the SRV tone and style to a different level. Who cares about being influenced by someone else's tone? Steveie sounded like his heroes too. Dan sounds like Dan to me. Its not just about SRV in my opinion. Quit hating if you can. Its just a bad habit.
The thing that is so amazing to me about the Strat, is that Leo Fender really did nail it right out of the gate. It was basically perfect in every way. I mean look at a 2020 strat and a 1954 strat, they are essentially the same, atleast at their core. Its design is truly timeless. It looks as good and as modern today as it did 60 years ago. Even the Les Paul took a good 5 years or so before they really dialled in the design. Thats actually something that seems to be unique about guitars... The technology advanced instantaneously all at once... but since then has hardly changed at all. An Electric guitar today is essentially the same as an electric guitar 60+ years ago right down to the appearance. I wonder if Fender or Gibson had any idea that 70 years into the future people would still be lining up at music stores buying those exact same guitars.
Saw Dan in Cardiff supporting Joe Satriani a few years ago and thought he was incredible. Id never heard of him before that . Then again in Cardiff last year, which was actually on my 50th birthday. Even better that night. Was lucky to meet him afterwards and get a t-shirt signed, with Happy 50th on it!. Now looking forward to seeing him perform again next week, in ..........Cardiff, that's right! His albums really don't do him justice, cos his live performances are awesome. This video really shows his passion for playing guitar. Go see him when you can!!
If Gretta Van Fleet can rip off led Zeppelin and not even acknowledge them as an influence, at least this dude amongst many others are giving SRV props...I love SRV style strat tone no matter who's playing it..Stevie didn't invent it either, if he was here he would tell you the same. Its not Stevie, Jimi, Ritchie, Eric, etc...Its a Strat, and it begs to be played and abused like that.
But everyone critisizes gvf for ripping off led zep... And it's not just the tone, it's the worn out sunburst strat, the huge frets, the massive strings and tuning down a half step. He's not just taking inspiration from srv he's being a copycat. God knows there are too many. As the saying goes Be yourself because every one else is taken up
@Guitar Dudeo damn right stevie is a jimi rip off! That is another I thing I don't understand with today's players, they think the blues originated with stevie, when really all he did was play classic blues riffs invented by bb king, buddy guy, jimi hendrix etc. The most unique things about stevie is his fret and string size. Even 'his' signature beat up strat look he stole from rory gallagher!
What about the recent videos that say that thinner strings actually sound better because they give you a better EQ sound (like Billy Gibbons ad these guys are playing .007's and stuff like that). Me I just buy 0.010's in bulk, I'm tired of playing the game. I Iike 10's so I can just put them on any guitar and still tune any guitar any which way, and I not going to pull the strings out of tune. Plus I could't eve play a Floyd Rose at all without 10's.
@@markedwards7721 I like thinner strings better too. I hate playing with heavy strings unless they're down tuned,, and when they're down tuned I hate the sound lol...
Love my strat. Will always be my #1. When I play my LP I'm aware I'm playing a great guitar. When I'm playing my strat I don't even think about the guitar, it's just part of my arm. LPs are great but anyone can make one sound good.
To get the quintessential classic strat tone is to get a classic stratocaster, preferably pre CBS. There's no need for heavy guage strings (11~17 ga.) for fat sustain tone. 7~10 ga. do just as well of a great job in playability and tone without the heavy work, proven by BB King and Billy Gibbons, also Rick Beato. Pickup height does play a roll in sound and attack. Most blues players prefer a raised height on their pickups for the loudness, attack and early breakup for that grit tone without effect pedals. I've been playing guitar for 50 years and own a 83 strat for nearly 40 years. Been through countless of pedals/amps and still have the same tone. My advice to any new players is to accept the tone your hands and guitar give, because that's is your signature and enjoy what you hear. That is your craft that no one can copy.
Dan thanks for the great video, and for sharing some of your awesome tone ideas. I love what you're doing around the 12:30 mark with the pickup selector switch. I hate to say I've never seen that, or tried it even after playing for over 40 years. I will now. Keep making us these informative videos, and by the way I love your playing.
Stumbled onto this since it was suggested after watching some other video. That neck/mid tone down, bridge tone up wah technique....you just taught and old dog a new trick. Thank you.
Can't stand treble retention circuits. As above, his tone gets thin as he rolls down.On a normal strat circuit, the sound will warm up a bit as you have less gain, as you turn up, there's more gain and you want a bit more highs to keep clarity. Leo got it just right, imo.
A treble retention circuit needs to be VERY carefully calibrated,- the resistor and the capacitor values, to get a setup that suits a player, I put together a little rig where I can test out different values to get it just right, makes a great improvement IMHO.
Fantastick, I'm a newbie in this field completely and I have full respect for the creativity you have implemented to your guitar and playing style I take my hat off to you sir, and to all you guitarist out there who hate. That shows you have no passion for music and where passion is concerned someone who loves music will do whatever it is to create there dream sound weather people like it or not. It makes me upset to hear fellow musicians hate. Very disappointed, you should be ashamed and stop being jealous be inspired.
Love what you said about fighting a Strat and it fights you back. Very true. When you can play a Strat, you can play. I have a 2012 Fender Mexi Strat that I modded with Van Zandt pickups. Sweet Strat tone!
Haha nice, I have a 2013 MIM with Van Zandt 'rock' pickups. Which model did you put in? Better than the original ceramics for sure, but kinda wish I'd gone with True Vintage instead of Rock, especially after what Dan said about overwound pickups
"If playability is right, your tone is gonna be right" Totally agree with that part, we play what we feel, if we play through a bad gear, bad setted guitar, we will not want to sound good, otherwise, if we feel comfortable with our guitar, so we'll feel more kind of "inspired" to sound better-
Cool video, this guy definitely knows what he's talking about. My big difficulty with the Strat is the position of the volume knob, especially if I want to palm-mute higher strings... I just keep knocking it and dropping the volume. I also occasionally knock the pickup selector switch when playing funk rhythm. I've only got into Strats in recent years so I'm having to change my technique. But tone-wise, the Strat is unparalleled.
That's actually a really great suggestion. I was thinking of removing the volume, and going for a dual stacked volume/tone knob, but starting from scratch with a blank pickguard is by far the best idea. Thanks.
If u don't wanna get a new pickguard, you can try to put some sponge under the knob, it will require more strength to move it unintentionally , there are some video about this =)
I have the exact same problem! I like strats but always turn them down, drives me crazy! I can't help it, I just like playing close to the bridge, works better on my LP and tele for what I want I think. Someday I'll learn how to play a strat right! lol 😂
Duuude: That blew my mind! Just got my first Strat (after many years of humbuckers), and found these tips just true legacy of usefull knowledge. Thanx a lot 🖤
Those were some serious licks you were laying down there. Sounds great. I remember going from a Stratocaster to a Paul Reed Smith custom 24 and was blown away at how much quicker my speed was instantly. I wasn’t expecting it but immediately I noticed a difference. They both are great guitars. You’re guitar has a meow to it. Pretty cool. Even with the switch in the 4th position it’s as bright and clean as most other Stratocaster would be in the first position.
I went to lights, and a buffer into a class A Orange rocker 30 and they sing longer without the muscle. try.009 and play with precision and you will step up, and your sound will improve without the fight. it starts wanting to play with you..... oB
To each their own, but I can’t imagine playing with strings that heavy. Ouch. I know SRV played on heavy strings, but it’s worth mentioning that Billy Gibbons (whom Hendrix said was the best player around) plays almost exclusively on 8’s. Either way, monstrous playing from Dan here. Fantastic stuff.
zelon1983 I think it deals with string tension. One of the reasons Les Paul's were so popular is their ease of playability. The strings bend easier for a string tuned to pitch compared to the same gauge of string tuned to pitch on a fender. Since the scale length of the string is slightly longer on a fender, the string has to increase its tension in order to raise its pitch to the same of a Gibson's. Result is more string tension and tougher strings to bend but you can buy custom necks that have a shorter scale to them.
Well, you don't really need to relearn the neck, just play one fret up. Many times when I jam with others the band hasn't the slightest clue that I'm tuned a half step down.
I agree 100%, a Strat can be the most difficult to play, but when you nail it like you do, its the sweetest tone available. That wah effect trick is awesome.
I’ve always said that playing vintage sized frets feels like driving with the emergency brake on or walking through mud. It’s crazy that some of my favorite guitarist play 7.25 radius necks with small frets. Like geez! Making us all look like sissies.
I feel exactly the opposite. Maybe your frets were worn out? The jumbo frets feels like speed-bumps when doing slides, to me. Only problem with the vintage gauge is that they wear out quickly. The American Pro Strat has so called narrow-tall frets, which is a great compromise for me.
BigRedRacingteam - it’s crazy because I thought the same thing. I thought for sure that I would like vintage size frets but the meat of my finger kept dragging on the wood of the fretboard and I couldn’t get over it. But those vintage tall frets that they are using now are a great compromise for sure 👍
Hey Dan. I commend you for a job well done with this video. Please do not pay any attention to the hater comments. You have a great tone and killer chops. Thank you for taking the time to share!
"you fight the strat and it fights you back". Exactly! Been playing one all my life and bought a PRS a year ago which has been sitting in the corner almost ever since. Too playable: you feel like you're getting less out out of it because you're putting less into it.
Even if you do hate how this guy plays, there really is no valid reason to bash him for playing how he likes to play. The only explanation is that you bitches are jealous that there ARE people who like how he plays. Or maybe you just have low self-esteem that drives you to shit on others (especially those who are successful like you aren't). And no, I'm not a fanboy- I've never heard of this guy in my life.
This video should be called "how to dial up a Stevie Ray tone" instead of Strat in general. Nile Rogers didn't tune a half step down, played funk, and got a totally different sound. Maybe a series of these videos would be better than just one in general because the topic is so big. Great stuff regardless, thanks!
I think you miss the point here about how once you understand the gear and instrument and different players equally understand that, it is all in the hands of an inspired to play person has. Same thing with all art... Painting and photography are great examples.
dave f naw, I've been trashing the switches on my strats for years and have never broken or replaced a single one. Volume and tone knobs, however, are a different story😁
How many guitar players does it take to change a light bulb? The answer of course is 2. One to change the light bulb and the other to stand alongside watching to say hmmm, yeah but I could have done it better! For me Dan Patlansky is a great player with a great tone, for others he might not be. That's down to personal taste because people think about and feel music differently, quite why that seems to worry and frighten some people enough for them to troll you tube with lots of vitriolic negativity about other players to make themselves feel better is beyond me - go practice some more instead and post your videos, you'll probably feel better about yourself. Why have lots of people not heard of Dan Patlansky, probably because he hasn't written any songs that connect with a wider audience. Same as Philip Sayce, Aynsley Lister, Scott Henderson etc etc all of who (in my opinion) are awesome players but who's songwriting is interesting to some of the public like guitar players but not to a wider public audience. At the end of the day it's usually about 'the song'. In the 80's Stevie Ray Vaughan was tagged as a Hendrix clone, difference was SRV wrote original songs that connected and appealed to a much wider audience, and therefore posthumously SRV is considered by many to be King, which in my opinion he is!
How many guitar players does it take? 1000. The first is SRV and the other 999 to copy him. Dead on about good, original songs. He’s a great player, but I listened to a few of his albums yesterday and couldn’t really get into any of them. Mayer was the king of figuring this out. No point being a great player if no one listens. Draw them in with good, catchy songs and they’ll stick around for the crazy guitar shit afterwards.
Spot on. I'm lucky enough to have both. When I play my LP I know I'm playing a great guitar. When I'm playing my strati don't even think about the guitar, it's just party of my arm. LPs are great but anyone can make one sound good.
If there is such a thing as "drink overtime" is therefore a "drink undertime"? I find drinking "anytime" is good, not sure about how lucky it is based on the results. But anytime works for me...
Dan thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, opinions and advice on the Stratocaster. I’ve been playing many, many years, but I learned several things from this .And Brother your playing is amazing, and so very tasteful.
I like the way he is. "In my opinion" and not saying how things are. Respect sir
That's the most important thing in art
I can go a lot more in depth but yea he's good but not the best tone trust that
Guitar Nut that your body is a wonder land or whatever song sounds sounds nothing like SRV
This guy and Kenny Wayne Shepherd i think, are the closest to SRV's tone.
One of the first things he said... listened to SRV. Paid his respects right there. Good on him, rock on.
Stephen Fry oh I see you watched the video too
Stephen Fry yep
Dee Devlin 😂
Rory had a master tone control on his strat, but he got the same effect by swelling the tone control
agree for most, but NOT on treble bleed - cause I love Fuzz with Strats and how it reacts on a (non-treble-bleed) volume pot :)

NXN Music probably don’t play at all
It's all those SRV dickriders! I mean we get it no one will sound like him. Just let the men play his strat.
I wouldn't even say its just guitar players or specific to this video, this is how RUclips/social media is in general. Everyone always looking to complain, judge, or hate on everything they see.
It's not guitar players, it's the whole Internet troll culture. Guy killed it!
A tuned down strat played cleaned on the neck pickup is the sweetest tone ever.
I just got a strat yesterday, played it at the store as it was in standard and had .10s on. Got home and couldn't feel it out right, turned to eb, magic!. Strings ever so slightly lighter, tone is fat, amazing how big little change makes.
SRV stepped down & USED 11s gauge strings before he passed.. You don't need 13s to get a SRV sound.
@@jimkostan9932 When you are tuned down a half step 11s feel like 9s. 10s feel really, really light, almost hard not to bend them.

I’ve never found a Strat difficult to play. It’s a glorious instrument.
Strat is just a magic I can ripp every thing out with just a squier
Abso'freaking'lutley great comment
Like Slash, I couldn’t get them to sound right.
Well, we can do what we want with that, too. I built a Warmoth-based Strat with their Superwide neck and the radius spec of my choice.
i could hear this shit forever. this guy makes the Strat come alive. Spectacular sound
The wah-wah trick is just amazing! Thanks for sharing.
Nice trick--worthy of Roy Buchanan, who doubtless would have figured it out--if he had played a strat (tele's tone control has the same effect on both pickups).
Rory Gallagher did it all the time, especially live.
Daniel Trias or you could just use a wah pedal
Good way to destroy a 5-way switch...
Thirdgen83 that's what a loser would say. Third generation you should named third rate
this guy is a great player. sad I missed him on his recent UK tour. his strat I think is a 62 or 63 and he's had it a long time. it actually survived the 2005 floods in new Orleans. he put it on top of the fridge freezer in the hope it would and it did , albeit it with slight mould in the case.
love a battle scarred strat.
teaboyuk i think it's a slab board strat 61 or early 62
Nobody leaves a 62 strat behind. I'd have to be on fire with Frank Bruno widening out my back passage to even consider it.
Wes O'Neill the red Strat is the vintage one from the flood but he put its neck on this one (which is a custom shop) for some time (and I believe he may have retired it now)
teaboyuk not this strat though. It's a red one. This is a reissue he found in a store I believe.

Woahhj I've been playing 20 years and this is the first time I'm seeing this... Crazy
been playing a strat for 21 years and when he busted that move I knew I have failed my instrument yet again. . . .
Man, that's some innovative shit right there. It sounds like something Tom Morello would have done.
If you can make it sound good on a strat, you can play it...that much is for sure.
manifestgtr Very well said
I always find that a strat gives it up real easy. You want a fight, play a tele. 😂
I feel like this guy is one my best discovers on youtube. He's passionate, talented and very sincere.

One thing people should know about using .13's is they can seriously damage your Strat if you don't have it set up properly. The tension they cause is incredible. I learned that the hard way as a young kid trying to be the next SRV.
DuckTalesWooHoo1987 what happened....?! 😬
DuckTalesWooHoo1987 definitely not true. All electrics were strung heavy with wound 3rds at first
Seriously damage your guitar? Wtf are you talking about. It’s not so wacky crazy out of this world to use heavy strings on a guitar. You will not cause serious damage whatsoever.
Using heavy gauges, SRV also had a 4th spring on the temolo. A good setup would be needed if switching from light to heavy, or vice versa when you realize you're working harder than you need to.
How come I've never heard of this guy?! This guys awesome I love his outlook on strats, I'm the same way. Great vid!

ozzie houser I agree with u 100%, the funny thing is, when I went to play for my church, I got the same attitude as when I played in the local clubs, I could not believe it, the church is supposed to be a team, one body, build up each other, encourage each other, but again they had two guitar players who gave me their bad attitude.
@ozzie houser That's a great observation! Really really great one! I wonder if that applies to president Trump!
Mark Edwards Nope

Excellent playing, Dan. Love the SRV tone. Some very good insights about the Strat. I've been tuning down a half or whole step on all my guitars (acoustics, especially). This guy is taking the time to speak from the heart about his experiences with the instrument in a way that is both interesting and informative. How in the world can anyone have a problem with that? I'd really love to see a video by one of the idiots who trashed this guy. They must just be astonishing guitar players. awesome tone, great playing and a really nice approach. i'm really thankful to have met Dan Patlansky, fantastic player and a generous man. keep rocking, mate!

Dude KILLED ME with the wah wah trick haha!. Didn´t expect that. Amazing player.

Even 'his' signature beat up strat look he stole from rory gallagher!
p you forgot his greatest influence.. Albert king.
I've seen Dan supporting Joe Satriani 2 years ago in Warsaw. Dude's incredible.
same, I saw him in Lausanne in 1st part of J.S. I was like ''wow this dude can play''
That is your craft that no one can copy.
lowering the pickups and soldering on my first volume kit was two mind blowing moments for me as a young lad
that sounds deliciously warm, fantastic tone. well done Dan 🎸👍🏼
If I were you I'd stay out of helicopters.
Ouch!
And can't even say "too early"...that was actually quite good :D
R.I.P SrV
and away from Eric Clapton too.
mike mac donald twas a joke my dude
Dan thanks for the great video, and for sharing some of your awesome tone ideas. I love what you're doing around the 12:30 mark with the pickup selector switch. I hate to say I've never seen that, or tried it even after playing for over 40 years. I will now. Keep making us these informative videos, and by the way I love your playing.
Best strat video on youtube. Lots of nice tips and proof what they can and should sound like. Great playing too.
Dan Patlansky is an amazing guitar player. Also: Dan Patlansky is the person who says tah-mah-toe.
Tie my toe? Why would he say that?
@@extremauncion001 tomato fool. Its how he says it.
@@ianmiles2505 how cute are you :D
Loved the wah trick with the pickup selector and tone control. Genius!
"If playability is right, your tone is gonna be right"
Totally agree with that part, we play what we feel, if we play through a bad gear, bad setted guitar, we will not want to sound good, otherwise, if we feel comfortable with our guitar, so we'll feel more kind of "inspired" to sound better-
Best damn guitar ever made.
You mean guitarist
Cool video, this guy definitely knows what he's talking about.
My big difficulty with the Strat is the position of the volume knob, especially if I want to palm-mute higher strings... I just keep knocking it and dropping the volume. I also occasionally knock the pickup selector switch when playing funk rhythm. I've only got into Strats in recent years so I'm having to change my technique. But tone-wise, the Strat is unparalleled.
Get a pickguard without the holes, then you decide where they go.
That's actually a really great suggestion. I was thinking of removing the volume, and going for a dual stacked volume/tone knob, but starting from scratch with a blank pickguard is by far the best idea. Thanks.
ForViewingOnly Go to Warmoth.com , you can order custom pickguards, this is where I ordered mine.
I find the 'half step down' trick very useful on teles too
zelon1983 I have a jag and do the same.
It sounds great on any low output guitar I find.
zelon1983
I think it deals with string tension.
It forces the rest of the band to tune down, unless you relearn the neck. just use thinner strings and tune standard.
I loved the "switch" wah part...Despite being a metal player, I always come back to my Strats...You can beat up these things and they just respond :)
Right?
Right
So glad he restrained himself from saying “Dr. Zed”
StratMatt777 so true lol. I bet half of them dont even play and the other half are just jealous asf
great stuff, thanks,i only wish you said what amp and pedals he was using.
thanks for the answer.
prob stuff i cant afford
14:17 Dr. Z EZG-50 is his amp of choice... FYI
thanks John
What about bridge? Floating or fixed?
Fixed
I really like Dan, he sounds like a nice down to earth person. Rock on Dan!
I’ve played a Strat for over 25 years but I have still learned an incredible amount from this one video. Dan is the Man!
Thanks for recognising NR, "sometimes it's the notes that you _don't_ play"
So true and has changed my approach 👍
I think you miss the point here about how once you understand the gear and instrument and different players equally understand that, it is all in the hands of an inspired to play person has. Same thing with all art... Painting and photography are great examples.
Dan: Mom did you wash my clothes?
Mom: No, just wear one of my blouses!!!
Dan: Ok!!! Thanks mom!!!
I bet he's went through a lot of switches
dave f naw, I've been trashing the switches on my strats for years and have never broken or replaced a single one. Volume and tone knobs, however, are a different story😁
dave f I was wondering the same thing
Switches are surprisingly resilient, and pots are surprisingly not.
Nah, just a good way to keep it clean.
Dude! i love that "Wah" effect with the pickup selector. VERY cool. Looks like it will take a deal of practice to pull off.
Or u could just use an actual wah pedal!?!?!
The tip to low the pickups have made a total difference on the sound of my strat, huge thanks, the difference was brutal
Holy crap worse joke ever lol. So horrrrible its funny!!
Nothing like the QUACK of the Strat...
You got it right. . . You play a strat..... LesPaul plays you...no comparison ...
Spot on. I'm lucky enough to have both. When I play my LP I know I'm playing a great guitar. When I'm playing my strati don't even think about the guitar, it's just party of my arm.
LPs are great but anyone can make one sound good.
Love my LP though. But at the end of the day ya cant make it quack!!
Exactly
have a drink overtime he says "right", good luck.
I'm a Strat man..... This is just another reason I play them exclusively.......great playing and tone. Thank you!
