- The Fender Stratocaster has been in production continually since 1954. It has been used by countless music legends in just about every musical genre that exists across the planet. It's sound is instantly recognizable and for many people the look and shape of the Stratocaster is synonymous with the electric guitar. The most copied shape in the world, the Fender Stratocaster has remained popular in part due to its sonic flexibility and versatility. The combination of three single-coil pickups and a five-way selector switch can create a myriad of tones from one instrument that makes the Stratocaster an essential part of every guitar players arsenal and often, the only guitar you need! Cooper Greenberg of Alamo Music Center dives into the sounds of the Stratocaster to give you the definitive users guide to the sounds available. To best illustrate the tones from the guitar, Cooper is demonstrating the voice of the guitar through the clean channel of a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. The clean tones are the foundation for the sound that will then be modified through pedals and overdrive, and whatever other weirdness you decide to throw its way. Understanding these tones is essential for getting the most out of your guitar. So, bookmark this video and consider this your users manual for all of the Fender Stratocaster Tones!

Few things in this world sound as good as a strat on the neck pickup.
Amen
But the bridge pickup on the other hand...
I wasn't a strat fan - I always said I would prefer Tele, Gibson, or PRS for almost any style of music.
But then I opened my eyes to that amazing blues tone. Best guitar for Blues, hands down.
@@Beans360 ya that’s best left to Tele lol
Strat neck and tele bridge are my two favorite tones.
What he didn't mention was the way he manipulated the tone was in where (location) he was picking. Picking close to the bridge always creates a brighter/twangy tone. The closer you pick to the neck joint the warmer/rounder tone you get. Picking with the meat of your fingers is also a way to add bass to the tone. Whether you snap the strings or pluck them with your fingers also has an effect on your tone. The thickness and material of the pick also will change your tone. Many variables can change/color your tone upon any guitar you play including acoustic instruments.
In addition the tone settings on the guitar when using different pups
👍😊🎸
Who better than to give advice on strat tones than a young David Gilmour?
Jimi, SRV, would be better than Dave Gilmour.

Guys listen. The secret to good strat tones is the colour. It has to be white with rosewood board.
Bonus tone if you have a mint green pickguard
Just like white light has all the colors in it, the white finish means it has all the strat colors in it at once, so it gets all the tones.
Dang it, he almost made the cut, because that’s a Pau Ferro board
How about a sonic blue with roasted maple board?
This dude is so good 😂🤣 I wasn't ready for all that finger style... great player, beautiful tone, dope video Alamo.
Soooo this Guy Proves I dont need sissy nails on one hand only screaming I play guitar look at me ... To play guitar... Awesome playing Makes me want to lose all my picks in Pick Nervana...
Thnx. This is spot on exactly what I was looking for. Love your presentation style, quite, relaxed and confident. Not one word wasted, nothing superfluous and wow what playing and just a gorge3looking and sounding guitar. Thnx. Stay safe in these strange time.
Cooper, I could honestly listen to you play all day. You are one of the few PROPER Strat players out there who truly knows how the instrument is to be played. So glad to see a video with your tasty chops front and center instead of playing second fiddle!
im confused.. it's a guitar. is there really one true and absolute way to play it?
did this tunnel visioned kid just say such a statement??
@@pegglethon4553 no, but I think he meant that more along the lines of you know how to get good and bluesy tones out of it
I love this presentation of the clean Strat tones !
New to guitar ( drummer 40 years ) just bought a American Standard Stratocaster. Thanks for the explanation on the tones I can look forward to . Cheers from Canada . Nice playing .
I love this informative format. More of this, please.
Strata have so much personality - I still use it the most for my recordings. When I was younger, I favored the combo positions, but I use them all now. This video did a great job of showcasing the tonal possibilities.
Great playing, Great demo, Great Fender Strat for the money...Went thru all the settings effectively...Well Done...
2 & 5 are my fave Strat tones. The guitar and your playing sound great!
2 for riff?
5 for solo?
Mine too.
Agree
Same here.
Holy hell I love this guy's playing!
I can't tell how much your video helped open a few Ideas for me. Thanks Bro, be blessed
Absolutely great demonstration. Thanks!🙏🎸
That neck pickup has a sweet tone that I have never experienced on any other guitar. It seems to be unique.
I'm a Guitarist specialized in Mark Knopfler style and I totally agree: most of the time my favorite switch position is the middle+bridge. Great video! :)
Excellent video!
best strat sound check ive seen. very nicely done mate.
Great demo Cooper!
This man's asymmetrical hair tho
A thing of beauty!

Wonderful video. Thank you.
Buddy!! Those licks are just amazing. Subscribed !!
What a great player, and awesome guitar!
Thanks- nice clear explanation.
Really fun and informative! Thanks.
Great sound. This really does define the strat sound in my mind. Couldn't have been played better.
Thanks 🙏 love the sweet sounds 😎🎸
The explanation was very good but more than anything I really enjoyed the playing. Awesome fingerstyle Copper!
Great info!!!! Thanks alot!
Very helpful. Thanks.
Very useful video with great playing, thank you!
I've been playing 7 years, strat and tele. I learned something here!!! Thanks!!!
Nice looking Strat and superb playing! One of the best demo's I've seen! Didn't hear any SRV OR JM and that is a huge plus!!
why is that a plus?
srv and jm had great tones
They definitely did! But EVERYONE tends to play them when they pick up a strat, and it's just nice to hear something a little different
Thanks for that mate... I took delivery of my brand new strat today, first ever that I've owned, so this little video certainly helped 👍😊🎸
Amazing tone , and amazing guitarist!!

Uñeta vs Mano... gana Mano! Jajaja
@@jermainerandmusic Even more specifically Fan Rasgueado
I just learned that actually. Just do like a really floppy slap onto the finger board and instantly upstroke and use your fingers to create a raking effect. Once you practice a little you can get super quick flamenco bursts easily. The key is hitting the higher neck to control the sound and get a smoother slap
Lmfaoooo
wtf
Cooper that was thoroughly enjoyable. I just bought a CV 70s Strat from you guys as my first guitar. I would take lessons from you if I lived closer. Great video, thank you.
Thanks for the support! Some of our Professors do online lessons btw!
Bought my 1st Fender guitar 3 years ago it is a strat ultra and it's insane, I'm glad I just went for it. Have mine playing through DSL40CR and it sounds mean
Loved your video, I'm basically just starting at 58 years old. Sometimes I thought it was too late. We'll see how it goes.
How’s it going brother ??? Love seeing the late start guys stick it out. With the Right attitude and practice regiment that can become incredibly good. A lot of times when I see guys start older, they develop a great touch and play smarter in a lot of ways , but it is def from putting time in no matter what age or level. I hope u are still picking
Great video thank you.
you R the Doctors of guitars - thank you for your help! always helpful
Very good guitar and player
Whoa! Cooper Greenberg is a player!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Good demonstation ,the vintera 60ties modell looks good and sounds really good with the hot rod deluxe in all position and your playing is very professionell so all is good at the alamo
You are the master of picking techniques.
My DIY built Stratocaster is almost completely identical to that one.
Nice fingerstyle work
Thanks for the demo. Great finger style. Love the way you tuck your pick away with your index. But would have loved to have seen a proper demo of the tone knobs too. I'm new to playing guitar and recently got a MIM strat. I know my bottom tone knob controls position 1 only , and the other one controls all the other positions (i think) but i also know on some other strats the bridge has no tone control at all! So the whole thing is shrouded in mystery!
Sorry we'll try to play with the tones more next time!
Thanks for the tips :-)
Thank you for this video, very useful. I'm pretty new to guitar so this helps in finding my sound!
Your right guid. Liked your vid class
My favourite setting is NOT there and that is why on my Strat since 1979 I put THREE individual pickup on/off switches (Fender Jazzmaster switches) so I have NINE combinations. Neck and Bridge setting together are my favourite. Then ALL three pickups on together give you just about an exact mark Knoffler sound. Always amazed me why on very old strats only 3 positions were available plus 'in betweens'. Didn't make sense to me even as a 16yr old kid!
nice spring reverb in that amp
That pau ferro fret board is so gorgeous

Great video, thank you. The tones were wonderful. I am wondering how much was from the great amp. Thanks again......Sal : )
*Awesome video, dude! I've worked out now that my favourite position on a Strat is the middle position, because it's neither too dark, nor too bright. It's just bloody right! Hey, that rhymed! 😂 It's just right 4 me anyways. So when I get my Strat soon, I think I'll remove both the neck and bridge pickups and the pickup switch, so it's just the middle one left!! 😂 Or maybe I'll keep the neck pickup and switch as well, so I can use the 4th and 5th positions, too! 😆*

That spring reverb really complements the Strat tone - gorgeous.
Is that just the reverb in the amp?
what a killer player
Not sure, the ceramic pick up sound alot warmer. But im stiol getting use to the mim.
2,5 and 4 for me. I don't have my bridge hooked up to a tone so its a bit too harsh for my taste.
Very nice video. By the way what speaker does this HRD has? Mine does not sound so good as this one.
You should fit the ten position Freeway 5B5-01 (for SSS) or Freeway 5B5-02 (for HSS / HSH) to one of your Strats, and then shoot a new expanded video!
This dude and his cool ass playing.
sounds divine the Vodoo Queen ( the stratocaster)
What year is that guitar? That is the perfect color combo, for a Stratocaster.
What settings is best to get the way huge Jimi SRV tones?
Holey shit man! This dude can friggin play!
Why would anybody give this a thumbs down? ludicrous
Pretty new to the guitar playing world so forgive me but what kind of picking style is he using? Sounds great. Especially when he incorporates his other fingers.
I’m fairly new to strats and understand the basic concept of lowering and raising pole pieces. However, I am curious why your b string pole piece in both the neck and middle pickups is so low. Is this normal? I have a Performer and the poles are all the same height so I’m curious. Thanks!
Please keep the whole neck in frame the next time :D I need to copy this guys riffs
What are your amp settings at 1:49?
What pickups are on this strat. I have an elite with noiseless and the s1 switch thickens the sound up.
Tim Shaw Hot '65 pickups !
How does he get it to sound relaxing, what distortion pedals
great playing. what model of guitar pickups are they? hot? vintage? texas?
Tim Shaw hot 55
What about the cricules tones?
Hi Copper, are you related to the great session guitarist Kenny Greenberg?
What scale was he playing at the conclusion? The fast picking one
I've got a Mexican-made Player Plus Strat. It's got a pull up tone knob, which activates the neck pickup in positions 1 and 2. So I actually have 7 tones! In position 1 with the knob pulled up, it sounds almost exactly like a Tele. And in position 2, it has an almost comically funky tone. Almost like a digital fake guitar lol. It's just an odd sound because all 3 pickups are on at once. I love it.
I actually just added a hot rail humbucker to the bridge position and it's perfect now. Best guitar ever.
Nice! I just got that exact same guitar and love it more every day. My only struggle so far is to get that "fuller" or "bigger" sound for rhythms and it sounds like you might have found it. Could you link to the humbucker you added? And is it difficult to do? I feel like that's the only missing link to making this the most versatile guitar ever.
@@flyingonward1 yea no prob. I'll leave the link at the bottom of this comment. But make sure you look up some videos about this pickup because it is extremely hot (makes some clean channels sound like overdrive sometimes but is great for distorted tones). I personally like it a lot, but I just want to be sure you know how hot it is. Seymour Duncan makes a good amount of single coil-sized humbuckers, like the Little '59 for instance (sounds more like a Les Paul - but not exactly the same because strats have a different scale length than a LP). But yea, just watch some videos and make sure it's the right pickup for you. They make a lot of these small Humbuckers specifically for Strats, so it's a great pickup brand for your situation.
I didn't install it myself because the Player Plus isn't a good guitar to do your first soldering job on, in my opinion. I bought a cheap Glary so I can practice, but I actually bought the pickup and brought it to a guitar tech at a guitar store and paid him to install it for me. The player plus's selector switch isn't a normal 5 way switch due to the push/pull knob. The connections are a bit different and there's a lot more, so I'd strongly suggest bringing it to a guitar store if you've never soldered anything before. Especially if you want it to work right. But you should do what I did and get a really cheap, shitty guitar to practice soldering. That's a good way to learn.
Anyways, here's the link (I bought the cream colored hot rail because it matches the pickups in my Olympic pearl player plus perfectly. But they make them in black, parchment, and white as well, I'm pretty sure)
If you want to check out other brands, search "single coil sized humbucker for strat" on RUclips and Google. Good luck!!!
www.seymourduncan.com/single-product/hot-rails-strat
tbh i never use the 2nd position (bridge and middle), i just use the 5th position (neck only) the 3rd (middle only) and the 1st (bridge only) and i barely find myself using the 4th position as well ( neck and middle), i dont know why but they have never suited up my style
I just got a2019 strat ultra. Does anyone know what pushing the Volume does?
How do I get the strat sound on something I want to play they are very unique but I hate playing them they feel like jelly

What does the push-pull knob do on the bridge pickup? I know that it sounds different, but what is actually happening?
How did you eliminate buzz?
What is the S1 switching he mentions a couple of times that he says that guitar has that most don’t?
It basically gives you more tonal control while keeping the same look of the strat. If you want to read more check out this link! www.fender.com/articles/tech-talk/how-the-s-1-switch-gives-you-more-tonal-options/

Hi, I found your video very interesting. Would you please listen to Bert Weedon's FBI, on RUclips. The last but one verse at 1 minute 19 seconds is played on the high strings, at frets 12; 13 and 14. It consists of the notes E; C and A. When I play that verse on my acoustic guitar, it all sounds very thin and frail. Bert plays an electric guitar with a plectrum. Any ideas how he might be achieving such a rich, powerful quality? I am not sure, but I think the big chord which starts each phrase is an A Minor(?) Would you agree?
Nothing beats a Strat.
