@NeonG24as someone who watched and liked LOGH I don’t understand this praise. From the first point it completely fails in its overall direction the characters usually look emotionless and lifeless it is completely unable to show don’t tell with any of its plot points so much so that if you don’t speak japanese it is pretty much like reading a book. And if you compare it to something like game of thrones, house of cards and other political shows which do a lot of its own aspects far better. If anything there are RUclipsrs who have visualised and presented the ideas presented in LOGH in a far better and more succinct way. I just don’t think it’s the pinnacle of anything and is very much carried by the fact that most anime made these days does not want to have stories like that
"The Legend of the Galactic Heroes" is about this question: Is it better to have an inefficient democracy or a benevolent autocrat? Because Reinhardt is a good and just leader. He truly wants to create a better world, and he actually makes his corner of the world a better place. But Yang argues that he still prefers democracy, with all of its flaws and problems, because it is a system in which people can actually be equals, and that's the only way people can truly be friends
The question is always: what if the good dictator dies? That's why i prefer democracy. It's flawed, slow but incremental and you can plan for the future even when a shit hits the fan. In a dictatirship you can't, on a surface level it is stable, but really it takes the smallest shit to hit the fan to broke everything
@@seileen1234but what if your democracy gets hijacked by special interests who pump so much money into lobbying that the average citizen’s vote has zero effect on government behavior?
The problem with Legend of the Galactic Heroes is that this dichotomy is just completely utterly unrealistic. If you look at history, the likelihood of having a benevolent autocrat is just absurdly small. Most autocrats cannot come into or stay in power if they are benevolent - they have to cater to their selectorate who help them stay in power, which breeds corruption, otherwise they will be replaced sooner or later by someone who is more ruthless. Dictatorial power reinforces corruption and malevolent behavior by rulers. Legend of the Galactic Heroes of course is far from alone in this portrayal, it has been commonplace in traditional political philosophy, with Aristoteles, Plato or Hobbes arguing slightly different versions of it. And of course in most classical fantasy series, the benevolent king is a commonplace figure. But these are mostly fairy tales. In reality, you generally either have the choice of having an autocracy - and overwhelming odds lean towards a ruthless, corrupt leader - or a democracy, which may be flawed in many ways, but at least there are ways to hold the leaders accountable. This naive portrayal of autocratic politics is something that really frustrated me with this show.
@@JJE92a the problem with “democracy” is that we don’t have direct democracy. We have “representative” democracy. We mostly vote for people, not for policies. This makes it easy for rich people, corporations, and even FOREIGN interests to figure out who to lobby. The US government enacts the policies that the lobbyists desire, not what the people desire. All other “democratic” governments enact policies in line with the U.S. lobbyists, not what their people desire. And it’s all held together by the fact that the people who can afford lobbyists can also afford to buy out the media. In the world we live in, the “checks and balances” built into the U.S. constitution are completely blind to the power of lobbyists.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is by far and wide the best anime ever made and one of the best pieces of media ever made. There is just no competition. Nothing even comes close to how well thought out the politics and world building were and how fleshed out the characters were in this show. It is utterly excellent.
Before anything else, the only reason LoGH is not on the top 10 on MAL is because different Gintama seasons are taking up three spots. If Gintama was counted as a single show LoGH would be ranked 8th
For anyone wondering how to watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes: My Conquest is a Sea of Stars > Overture to a New War > Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Ep 3) I don't recommend the new anime unless you really can't stomach older anime at all
Great recommendation. This is how I was told to watch it and it became my favorite show. Gineipaedia is a great reference for looking up more information about LOGH.
@@V---L"My Conquest" is basically a battle that happens before the series. It was a pilot episode. The main battle in it is amazing with its use of the OST. Overture to a New War is a superior version of the first two episodes with fantastic directing and cinematography put into a 1 hour 40 min movie You're not really missing much since the main series has all the meat and potatoes, I just think it's a better way to jump into the series. There's a prequel series with out of order mini arcs which is nice if you want 50 episodes of new content
Im a new anime fan, but i dont like to disregard an anime just because its old. Infact it intrigues me how anime this old is still talked about. Thank you for making it easier for me to watch now.
I prefer the original, the remake is actually more faithful to the books than the OG but the added scenes and changes in my opinion made it a lot better. Though by no means is the new one bad, I just don't think its as good, and it does have a better start.
@@HD-mp6yy I would have to disagree, the two prequel movies are an excellent primer for the series. DNT (the "remake" in this context to the new people reading in) has some upsides and doesn't have character frontloading like the original, but OVA has a particular pacing and tone that isn't comparable to DNT. Like each episode starring one side then the other is not a bad way to go about it, but it DNT likes to make the battle more of an action piece than the OVA, (for an example, there was the omission of the tank beds line, which OVA uses to suggest the battle taking a long enough time for there to be fatigue) And out of my personal bias, the no-dialogue scene Lap's proposal in the Overture movie is one of my favorite scenes in all of anime-dom.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes isn’t merely just a great anime, but a wonderful piece of sci-fi as a whole. I have yet to read the original novels, but I do recommend both the original and remake for their own distinguishing reasons. In the original anime, the presentation of computer graphics and technology may be outdated, but I feel the original has a superior Japanese voice cast and soundtrack.
I only read the first novel, but I don't recommend it. Tanaka's writing is not fit for novels - it is very, very straightforward, with no poetic language at all. The 1988-1997 anime fits the events together better (the narrative is more linear, whereas the novel will just have the narrator spoil that something will happen later for no real dramatic reason), and the "men sitting in rooms talking with each other" works better with talented actors, in my opinion.

Finally, the day is here when TT talks about Legend of the Galactic Heroes! To the newcomers of the franchise, welcome. The community might be elitist and the debate between the newer show vs the original OVA will never end, but that's just how things are. If you are wondering how to start watching the OVA, there are two movies (My Conquest is the Sea of Stars, Overture to a New War) and then you can go ahead to episode 3 of the OVA onwards to finish (Overture is the remake of Ep. 1 and 2). Afterwards, there are gaiden prequel series but I would recommend taking a break first before starting that. As for DNT (the re-adaptation that people tend to call the remake), you can just start on the first episode onwards. It's not done though.
@@zainm5919 The OVA doesn't have a dub version outside of fandubs and a proof of concept official dubbing of like two episodes that got nowhere. As for DNT, I can't speak of it personally since I haven't seen it in dub but from what I gather it's mostly inoffensive.
so glad to see more and more people talking about LotGH, it got me into proper literature and reading Thucydides, Tolstoy etc. Just a god-tier show all around
In my honest opinion, Legend of the Galactic heroes is the peak anime has to offer. It's definately in the top 10 if not top 5 of all time. Such depth in characters and story, even if the pace can be hard at times, it always pays off with incredible results.
@@mamspugeti6931 Imo, all things considered, it is #1 , but I was speaking more generally. Although we may all admit it is peak, we all have our personal preferances and inclinations towards other anime as well that may suit our personality and tastes better.
I binged LOTGH back in the summer of 2014 during a particularly bad time, and then re-watched it the following summer in 2015. It remains, to this day, the most ambitious socio-political commentary ever attempted by an animated artwork. Out of the 90+ episodes of LOTGH, not a single one of them feels like filler, not even the episodes clearly designed to be such (the history documentaries, slice of life episodes of Reinhardt and his mistress, "I wish Kircheis was still here" episodes, etc..) all forwarded the plot in some way or provided the viewer with additional background to specific character motivations. One of the largest and impressive casts, in a time where budget constraints were VERY real, each character had defining traits and a singular unique flair to them which makes them recognizable in re-watches. Game of Thrones is the only popular westernized television series I can think of which has the same amount (initially) of ambition and trust in its audience to follow along, and that's just War of the Roses with Dragons. LOTGH is something far more ambitious, and it really, really nails the ending.
Yeah, one of the greatest achievements is how it simply doesn't fumble its plot. Keeping a long, dense plot held together like that is a massive feat and really makes it feel so satisfying to watch it progress the whole way through. Lots of writers can set up a grand story, very few can follow through properly.
I find it funny that Garnt is praising LotGH so much considering he hasn't even started Season 3. Half of what he's watched is considered the weakest part of the show

This part in the podcast convinced me to watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes and my immediate feelings upon finishing it were how similar it was to my all time favourite novel; Worm. Narrative wise they are very different but they share an overriding element in their storytelling being that characters talking and interacting is almost always more captivating and on many occasions far more tense than any of the action or battle scenes. In Worm I would often skim read the fights so that I could get back to character interactions and had the exact same feeling towards most of LGH.
As someone who watch the remake, it's great as well. I really enjoyed the characters and the space combat is far more enjoyable imo than the original. Don't listen to the hardcire fans, the original is incredible, but so us the remake. Ideally u should watch both of them, but if you don't like the older style, def give the remake a try, jts really good ^^
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is hands down the best anime I have ever seen. It’s a shame that it’s only legally available for streaming with English subs in one website (and in one territory!)

I started LOGH the remake i really loved and decided to watch the orginal and i was mindblown a good it is. It is the best anime ever made. Yang wen-li is the best character love him
Well the reason why adventure/action shows get higher rankings is because anime fans tend to be more interested in genre fiction. If they weren’t, they would probably be watching crime epics or family dramas because there’s a lot of those in live action television and film. I think that many anime fans do like that stuff, but I am guessing that isn’t the majority. Like people won’t care if a show has incredible writing, if it doesn’t have high stakes, it cannot be an all time great. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is an amazing example where I would say a lot of drama films are on the level of that anime, but since it’s science fiction, a lot of people who aren’t exposed to that kind of stuff will be amazed by it. Of course Garnt would prefer the new one, he’s so recency biased. Also I personally haven’t seen either one, but I can tell that the original is better, but that’s probably because I tend to not be biased toward newer stuff and take things on their own merits.
How can you take something that you haven't even experienced on it's own merits? That's just you assigning merit to something because someone told you it had merit. You don't need to have an opinion about everything.
"a lot of drama films are on the same level" If you think any film could possibly be on the same level then you completely missed what makes LotGH good. A film can never reach what LotGH did because the biggest achievement of LotGH is it's massive scale and how it successfully holds its plot together over a very long story without fumbling it at all. A film that's only a couple hours long is a completely different medium. You may as well be comparing a film to a painting.
Only watched the movie prequel and the first episode and it got me really interested in the world. If I wasn't already watching few other shows I would be much ahead.
DNT is, in my opinion as someone who watched the OVA and read the books, far worse that the OVA. It ditches the Theatre/Documentary-style of presentation to some degree, changes some scenes and plotpoints in ways I personally don't like and care for and expands on scenes that I thought were explained well enough and, worse of all, changed the ship design. Seriously, the overdesgined nature of the new ships is criminal. Half the time I don't know what I'm looking at, and I designe spaceships in my free time. I looked at 3d models of the DNT ships, I looked at more pictures than I can count. And I miss the old bricks vs pistols pf the original. And Don't get me started on the fucking gondolas. I'm sorry, but that is something that just pissed me off. So sorry Garnt, but I think you are dead wrong about the remake being better
He did say it was a hot take. I think there's definitely a solid category of people who would enjoy the remake more than the original. I am someone who liked the original more, but the better/worse is not as unequivocal as some hardcore fans make it sound sometimes.
The original is definitely better, but the remake is still very good, in fact, they both do compliment each other in one way or another. There are scenes that were better in the remake and scenes that were better in the original, and watching both makes me appreciate them more overall. As you said, I like how the original presents it as more of a “documentary” but I also do love how the remake makes it “cinematic and grand.”
DNT is absolutely worse in every possible metric basically, I can't even say it has better visuals considering the fucking atrocious character designs. I mean, just compare Yang's DNT version to the original OVA, for a good example, although Reinhard is also a good comparison. I guess the animation is technically more fluid, but that's not something that should matter too much in what is basically a political/pseudo-historical drama.
@@beetheimmortalI wouldn't word it with such hostility, but I do agree that I struggled to tell DNT characters apart from each other, as they tend to have similar faces.
@@supsup335 I consider that a huge step down from the orginal where everyone had unique and recongizable faces. DNT just makes them into modern sameface anime characters. Consider Reinhard and Kircheis for example. In the original, while they shared some similarities, they also had entirely different facial structures and hairstyles, making them easily recongizable. In DMT, they literally took the same design and painted the hair differently. Hell, even Yang Wen-li, who's supposed to be over 10 years older than Reinhard, looks basically the same but with a different hair colour. And don't even get me starded on DNT's story, which cut out so much from the original. Even the OVA is guilty of that and of rushing some parts to some extent, but DNT is on a whole other level, which is somewhat understandable considering the shorter runtime, but it's still a downgrade. I'm not really hostile toward DNT (I really like the song "Binary Star" for example), I just find it very disappointing and I have the same problem with it as other remakes: the existence of a remake implies that the original is outdated and bad, and may make some people just outright ignore the original, which, in my opinion, would be a terrible choice.
I suggest starting it without caring too much about its length It's a pretty dense and convoluted series so between one thing and the other I ended up watching it very slowly, binging 2 episodes at a time It took me one year and a half to finish it, but it was a beautiful experience anyway
okey , we agree to disagree The remake loos bad imo. the characters look like kpop stars , some you cant tell man and woman apart if you dont know. the space ships are so CGI , your eyes start to hurt at one point . @@hunterlake2980

Tbf his job is watching anime, I can understand if he has a hard time watching a long form anime while also having to watch a bunch of trash anime for a job.
Die Neue These is what introduced me to the old OVA so I can't shit on it since if it wasn't good for me then I wouldn't even bother trying the OVA with or without the knowledge that it is a remake.
Litterally just finished binge watching this 2 days ago. I watched the first season when it first came out and didn't even think it was getting more seasons. Glad it did!
I've watched up to ep 30+. For a year now and so far it's decent nothing too crazy happen for now. I don't want to rushed it. Because I know this type of show is a slow burn. So yeah will continue when the right time come.
I'm so glad Garnt finally talked about LOTGH remake. I've been waiting for him to bring it up for so long. It feels so undervalued for a such an amazing anime that's been airing right along our regular seasons. Sadly no one's talking about it aside from a cult following.
LOGH reminds me of Dune, it's very political and a lot of things happened that need a lot of attention to the smallest detail. and I love it because I just love to waste my time to over analyze what happened on a fictional world in a fictional story.
I think I would rank LOTG in my top 5 or around kingdom in my top 10. If some people would say this is their #1 show, I would believe them and not go against them because it argubly could take the #1 spot of any time.
LOGH is something anitube should be talking about more often. It’s truly the high bar of grounded narrative in the medium, which is wild, considering it’s a sci-fi show of a speculative far flung future. Also, the scene mentioned at the end of this clip is the greatest two-character showdown in visual media. No violence. No winner. Only two good men who repeatedly survived impossible odds with different ideas of how to achieve peace, sitting down to respectfully see one another clearly. It’s a masterclass in how to write intelligent fiction without seeming pretentious about how intelligent it is.
I’m really interested in checking this series out! For anyone who’s seen both the og and the remake, does it matter which one to watch? I think the remake is on crunchyroll so I was leaning towards that but I want a second opinion lol
If you just want to experience the story then watch the old version since it's actually finished, if you want to spend a few more years of your life waiting for a more faithful adaptation of the novels then watch and wait for the remake to finish. IMO both have their merits and you really can't go wrong with either
I think for anime fans who aren't used to that older character design, it would be good to watch DNT first as DNT is more "accessible" for modern anime fans who are more used to the sleek animations and modern style (the space battles also look cooler even if they sacrifice some detail and depth for sleekness). But the original story is still the best IMO. So hopefully the new anime can be a gateway to the old anime? If you end up liking the characters and the world, you can always go to the OVA and watch that. If you're fine with the OVA's meh animation and character design then you should go with that. Personally I find the OVA's designs charming, but I know people who only got into anime in the last few years disagree with me lol.
@@talisa222 the OVA designs are more faithful to the military theme that's for sure. the remake makes it painfully clear that it's modern for better or worse and I can definitely agree that the OVA has more charm since I personally prefer the grit of 80's OVA, but as you pointed out the remake is more palatable for modern anime fans and if it can serve as a gateway to the classics it's certainly a good thing
It's up to your personal preference. The way I've seen it described is if the OVA was the historical account of the events, the remake/re-adaptation is a dramatized/action movie adaptation of those events. Like the history of WW2 and WW2 movies.
Kaguya sama love is war is probably my favourite romance show because of the two characters. There is a reason Miyuki and Kaguya work as a couple and season 3 and the movie really establish why. Also the comedy is great. My favourite episode is probably the rap episode.
Why do we regard action-adventure shows above romance? Because STUFF HAPPENS IN THEM. There are a lot of good romance shows, but they legit seem to be much rarer than good action shows. I bet it's because of the demographics of the viewership.
LotGH is an incredible anime, basically a more elevated version of Code Geass. I like it because of the gorgeous 80s anime design, its incredible to watch Reinhard rise of power. That being said, its very long and difficult to finish, and the show kinda stagnates a bit mid way, especially if it enters a story arc you don’t care about. It picks back up towards the end tho. It develops characters well and its not afraid to kill people off, you’ll hate to see them die.
I tried to watch it and is so complicated, I was so lost in episode 12, I was like "who are they?" "are they the good ones?" so is still in my list, the music tho, favorite ever, love the op and ed!
In LOGH i love how this thing is... EPIC. Not in a hype way and more in a "how it big" way. You have a massive sector of our galaxy as a political/battlefield. You can feel the weight of every events and every desidions. You can actually see the references on a F*CKING Homer's Trojan Cycle and some couple of other myths and stories! This anime is incredible
I haven't watch the remake, so can I ask where the last episode of the remake ended in the OVA? Also I would like to ask about the experience of watching both OVA and Remake.
Honestly I agree about just watching the remake. They both have pros and cons, but on the whole, the remake does a much better job with the characters and the cinematography.
The only thing LOGH really needs is to have all the scenes redrawn in the original 80's style, just with higher fidelity and consistent quality. The voice actors were great, so no need to improve there.
It's like 100 episodes of dramatic banters and plot twists. Just when you think the plot could not twist any further, it did, just like a shitty soap opera after evening news. The show almost convinced me to accept dictatorship, until I realized they put the best example of dictatorship against the worst example of democracy. Shit's rigged yo.
I think the newer one is on Crunchy roll and the older one HiDive (last I checked) Newer one is better in the beginning and a bit more modernised but the older one has far more charm and is completed. You just have to bear with terrible animation, especially at the beginning
Watched the series a few years ago. Loved it so much I bought the original books. That was mostly because the OVA on dvd was more expensive than buying all 10 of the books
The remake of Legend of the Galactic Heroes is generally better in my opinion because it is more faithful to the original story. The original version, while definitely a great show, has enough issues with it that I prefer the remake. The most notable issue is the shear amount of filler in it. The only filler that I am willing to accept is in the first half of season 1 because most of the filler primes the audience for the second half. It really makes us root for Reinhard to win out over his enemies in the second half, meanwhile we the audience have some difficult political questions to answer ourselves regarding the Free Planet's Alliance in the second half because we are shown just how corrupt and ineffective the government is in the first half.
LoGH has 4 seasons. The first 3 seasons are some of the best drama I have ever had the joy of experiencing in my whole life. The last season, however, is a noticeable and clear step down, as far as I'm concerned. I just cared less and less about the stakes by the end.

@@seileen1234but what if your democracy gets hijacked by special interests who pump so much money into lobbying that the average citizen’s vote has zero effect on government behavior?
I believe the answer of the question is "Halfway met" or Constitutional monarchy.

My Conquest is a Sea of Stars > Overture to a New War > Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Ep 3)
I don't recommend the new anime unless you really can't stomach older anime at all

Great recommendation. This is how I was told to watch it and it became my favorite show.

@@V---L"My Conquest" is basically a battle that happens before the series. It was a pilot episode. The main battle in it is amazing with its use of the OST.
Overture to a New War is a superior version of the first two episodes with fantastic directing and cinematography put into a 1 hour 40 min movie
You're not really missing much since the main series has all the meat and potatoes, I just think it's a better way to jump into the series.
There's a prequel series with out of order mini arcs which is nice if you want 50 episodes of new content

@@Ash_Wen-li Is the prequel worth watching? Because I really liked the series, so I might check it out.
I prefer the original, the remake is actually more faithful to the books than the OG but the added scenes and changes in my opinion made it a lot better. Though by no means is the new one bad, I just don't think its as good, and it does have a better start.
In my opinion watch the first two episodes of the Remake then continue with the Original
@@HD-mp6yy Just watch the prequel movies then. My conquest is the sea of stars and overture to a new battle
@@Yamiya08 Not of you are new to LoGH. The first two episodes of the Neue These are a better introduction to the series
Like each episode starring one side then the other is not a bad way to go about it, but it DNT likes to make the battle more of an action piece than the OVA, (for an example, there was the omission of the tank beds line, which OVA uses to suggest the battle taking a long enough time for there to be fatigue)
And out of my personal bias, the no-dialogue scene Lap's proposal in the Overture movie is one of my favorite scenes in all of anime-dom.

Would you recommend the dubbed versions of any of these (assuming there is one)? Subtitles won't hinder me at all but it would be nice to know.
@@zainm5919 The OVA doesn't have a dub version outside of fandubs and a proof of concept official dubbing of like two episodes that got nowhere. As for DNT, I can't speak of it personally since I haven't seen it in dub but from what I gather it's mostly inoffensive.

The new one is a little better in some places but it misses out a lot on the charm and timeless feeling
How can you take something that you haven't even experienced on it's own merits? That's just you assigning merit to something because someone told you it had merit.
You don't need to have an opinion about everything.
"a lot of drama films are on the same level"
If you think any film could possibly be on the same level then you completely missed what makes LotGH good.
The first two episodes of the OVA is condensed and have additional scenes in the Overture to a New War movie if you are interested.
finally you guys are doing this, i have been waiting for you guys to spread the word of this anime for a long time!
9:30 That's insane, I've always said this about the show as well, I didn't think it was a common opinion. It feels like watching history unfold.
It's pretty clearly written by someone who is a big fan of the narratives of history, the characters themselves read our own history too.

I'm so glad Garnt finally talked about LOTGH remake. I've been waiting for him to bring it up for so long. It feels so undervalued for a such an amazing anime that's been airing right along our regular seasons. Sadly no one's talking about it aside from a cult following.

The only thing LOGH really needs is to have all the scenes redrawn in the original 80's style, just with higher fidelity and consistent quality. The voice actors were great, so no need to improve there.
Grant needs to finish the original LOGH. He stopped watching at the best part.
i wonder why people should watch THE BEST ANIME OF ALL TIME .....
LOTGH also addresses fascists that twist democracy with nationalism and macarthyism. Its more relevant every day
GOAT
Why didnt someone mention japanese cast of Vegeta voices the main character in LOGH?
I get the vibe that this is a Dune type of story and I loved Dune.
Its like True detective S1. We get to act elite after Watching it lol
Where can I watch this show? I can’t find it anywhere. Also should I watch the remake or the original?
I think the newer one is on Crunchy roll and the older one HiDive (last I checked)
Newer one is better in the beginning and a bit more modernised but the older one has far more charm and is completed. You just have to bear with terrible animation, especially at the beginning
Animepahe has all episodes good quality
Legend of the Galactic Hero is basically like Gundam without the Gundams, and your welcome.
Kinda. It’s like Dougram without the mechs, which was definitely inspired by Gundam
@thomasffrench3639 Another honorable mention... Eighty-Six[86] has mech, but no Outer space action. At least we have politics.
well it's called the anime that ends all anime
Watched the series a few years ago. Loved it so much I bought the original books. That was mostly because the OVA on dvd was more expensive than buying all 10 of the books
Anilist > mal
IMDb above all imo
actually watch both, the remake and the OVAs
Arguably the best anime of all time
The remake of Legend of the Galactic Heroes is generally better in my opinion because it is more faithful to the original story.
A show that depicts Democracy at it's worse & Imperial Dictatorship at it's best.
Good story tellers & artists usually make poor managers in real life.
Do not listen to Garnt, watch the OG
LoGH has 4 seasons. The first 3 seasons are some of the best drama I have ever had the joy of experiencing in my whole life. The last season, however, is a noticeable and clear step down, as far as I'm concerned. I just cared less and less about the stakes by the end.
