I always take some fries and a burger to cinema with me - but the movie eventually reaches a point that is like "nu uh no eating from this scene onwards"
The scenes where they were violent towards each other shook me to my core. Nowhere in cinema have I ever seen such a raw, visceral and literal portrayal of self hatred. Watching this film after decades of struggling with body dysmorphia and a deficit in self compassion, those scenes felt so sobering. The violence towards your own body, the anger at the displays of human existence within the self, the sorrow and regret when faced with the irreversible damage you have done to your body in pursuit of a standard you were never meant to achieve - it was a heartbreaking prompt to question the value we put on our image both personally and as a society. I expected this film to tiptoe on the line between powerful imagery and triggering imagery but it completely went beyond my expectations. After watching many films about self image, I always felt these films couldn’t be done without feeding into/inspiring self destruction. The Substance only made me think of self compassion and how often it’s actually practiced/encouraged in life. It made me feel so much compassion for myself after violently hating and hurting myself in the pursuit of “beauty”. This film definitely didn’t heal me but it completely reinforced all the reasons why I want to.

One of the greatest body-horrors ever made. Especially by someone whose last name isn't Cronenberg. Coralie Fargeat has placed herself firmly on equal footing with both Cronenbergs: Elder, _and_ Younger. I don't think I need to say that this isn't an easy task, and it's one many other directors have attempted (with varying success) but she actually did it! A lot of directors, who attempt Cronenbergian body horror, fail to realize that what makes this sort of film work isn't the gross-out, or the gore, but the human element. _The Fly_ worked because it wasn't about a guy turning into a fly, but about a couple dealing with a terminal illness that will make its victim violent before it eventually kills him. _The Substance_ gets right at the heart of several deeply human themes, not the least of which are ageing, self-image, the cruelty of showbusiness, and loving who you are. I think it's important to say that the film also touches on themes of losing what you are by chasing what you're not. In a direct sense that a greedy youth will lead to a bitter aging, and the metaphorical sense that being anyone but yourself steals a part of yourself that can't be returned. It will make you an enemy of yourself, despite that fact that you are one.
Demi's last statement really nails it and highlights how difficult it is for most people. and, for people with the means and money , it is even harder since they can pursue the most expensive procedures to NOT accept their face and body as it is.

And we shouldn’t throw away all we have to meet some non-existent external standard, or trying to be a version of ourselves that we once were. For someone who spent thousands upon thousands of dollars years ago on full body surgical procedures to appear younger and has had more recent enhancements (e.g. lip fillers) it is not only insulting to our intelligence that she promotes acceptance of ourselves as we are, it is ludicrously hypocritical. My cat was on my lap watching the screen during that part, and when her eyes split and the brown eyes rolled back into her head, my cat absolutely freaked out lol. It scared tf out of my poor little guy! He jumped and scrambled up into my arms, clawing the whole way and hid his face in my hair 🥺🥹😅 it was so cute and sad!
The substance is a beast of a movie. My best friend and I watched it, and went into it completely blind. Hadn’t heard anything about the film. And we were absolutely obsessed! Horrified and disgusted in the best way possible. Every single thing in the movie serves a purpose, sent a an emotional message, or contributed to the overall theme. There are soooo many layers to the movie. So many intersecting concepts. I was completely speechless seeing Demi Moore play this role (not the actress I’d expect in a film with abstract execution) and she bodieeeedddd it ❤❤see it if you haven’t! It’s unlike anything you’ve EVER seen.
I think this movie was explicitly made for people who don’t get it. The message was obvious and the vision of the industry is quite overly simplistic (definitely true, but there’s more than old white men and a narcissistic white male boss). I loved the acting and the visuals. The message is pure and well-intended too. My only criticism is that I’m expecting more from writers these days but also I get that the ideator had these raw feelings that wanted to express without filtering and giving it too much thought.
It expresses the raw feelings very well and it is layered well. I think the psychological trauma it leaves upon its watchers is more than enough 😅 dont u think
Movie was incredible and the acting was phenomenal ! The message, the meaning , really does have you thinking about how unappreciative we are of what we have
One of THE BEST FILMS ever made. The way they take the theme of accepting yourself as you are and the battle with self to do that and visualize that through this story is utter genius. Props to everyone involved in creating this film. Complete brilliance and what film was made for.
Great movie with a great message for young and old alike! Thanks Demi and Margaret, fabulous work! Loved it, at age 76, still "Young at heart"~ Awards to those makeup and special effects people as well!
Великолепная игра актеров, бесподобная Деми, которая действительно обнажила свою душу! Посыл фильма правильный, глубокий и оставляющий послевкусие. Визуал такой, что глаз не оторвать.. я надеюсь, что они получат много наград за эту картину.
I thought the movie had taken a metaphysical twist at the end where she got stuck in a weird inbetween space and had to live as a monster (inside and out) while the outside world validated it. Imagine how impossible real growth would be if the outside world always lied to you.
Full disclosure, I’m a straight 53 year old man, and I thought this was an excellent movie. Demi is so amazing, and so brave and bold to allow herself to be photographed like this. She shows every real part of her. And it’s wonderful. This movie made me really appreciate what I’ve got, instead of always feeling bad about myself and comparing myself to coworkers half my age. I still haven’t seen the ending but so far, the movie is amazing. What an important subject.
@@becky1993x don’t like the way you look as you age? Use serums, see a dermatologist, exercise. Don’t bash someone’s head on screen for 10 mins as an outlet
One of the key takeaways from the movie is the importance of accepting yourself as you are, without waiting for others' approval or love. The expectations we place on ourselves, often influenced by what others want us to be, can prevent us from seeing how amazing we truly are. Even actresses, who are often admired for their beauty, have their own flaws and challenges. The message I got from the film is that self-love and self-acceptance are far more important than seeking validation from others. Instead of waiting for someone else to love you, it's crucial to first love and appreciate yourself.
To me Demi is aging so well. Despite the beauty, I'm always touched by woman who embraces aging with confidence and charm. We cant scape that anyway right? Your souls remains young.
Thats why she was part of this movie. It is a subject that is close to her and she clearly has had experience with it. Maybe now she is trying to accept herself more regardless of what is expected of her?
Completamente!!!
It was a very thought provoking movie, especially for women. As I was watching it, obviously I don't know how female celebrities feel, but I kept wondering why she would do this and that. From the very beginning already, why did she just leave her body on the floor? And later on, she made a room to hide her. It's from there that I thought of how differently I would have acted towards my "other" self. I immediately thought that I would lay my body on a comfy bed, and at the end of each week I would write to myself with positive affirmations. It's an interesting perspective and definitely lets you question yourself.
Lol 😂😂😂😂 Lets Be REAL...Demi Moore has had ALOT of Plastic surgery on her Body and Face for the past 20 plus yrs. Now after her last face life shes telling US to accept ourselves the way we are? GIVE ME A BREAK
Maybe because she's speaking as someone with experience in not accepting herself. Nobody is perfect 100% of the time, and having previous work done doesn't mean she doesn't have a different perspective now. You should see the movie if you haven't already.
Just the last 6 I. I don't know if she had anything before around 55. It's kind of insulting to 50 year olds to have a 61 year old pay one. Maybe if they had an actual 50 year old play her, it would have thrown it into the face of Hollywood that women age out at 50. There are many beautiful 50 year old women in Hollywood - Angelina Jolie, for one.
Plastic surgeries are also to improve or enhance some part of your body. Not necessarily because you hate your body, it means improving but without taking it to excess
This movie leaves lasting impressions in your mind that can be so abrasive and absurdly intrusive but at the same time curiosity invoking! It's like that thing you don't ever want to see, but can't look away! If you're very visually sensitive I won't recommend this movie. BUT if you're intrigued by topics of gross beauty standards then go for it!
The fact that Demi is shown so exposed and beautiful and the character can’t see it is what makes it so heartbreaking. Fantastic film.

I’m sure this film is way too dark for an Oscar, but I am blown away from both of their performances. Demi was heartbreaking in this film.
That scene with Margaret standing in the doorway when her neighbor first meets her, is genuinely one of the most jaw dropping moments in a movie I’ve ever seen. She’s stunning
The best film I've seen in a long time. Spot on
Well acted that shi was terrifying 🥶 crazy transformation
Demi was so incredible in this
Demi Moore has another role of her life. 🎉 She aged gorgeous
They’re both such cuties
The puppy shes holding is soooo cute!!!!
I guesss they portrayed it that way because it’s what outsiders usually think of when the industry is mentioned.
Movie was incredible and the acting was phenomenal ! The message, the meaning , really does have you thinking about how unappreciative we are of what we have
True! And taking care of yourself!!!! Wisely. You’ll never be as younger as you are today.
One of THE BEST FILMS ever made. The way they take the theme of accepting yourself as you are and the battle with self to do that and visualize that through this story is utter genius. Props to everyone involved in creating this film. Complete brilliance and what film was made for.
Wow Margaret's voice in real life is so different to her character's 😱😱
I got the impression she was speaking in a kind of baby voice to make herself younger and extra “feminine”
@@allisonchainz82her pitch definitely changed depending on whom she was speaking to throughout the film.
Casting Demi Moore in this role was genius
Demi moore is literally a goddess, this movie was really eye opening
Great movie with a great message for young and old alike! Thanks Demi and Margaret, fabulous work! Loved it, at age 76, still "Young at heart"~ Awards to those makeup and special effects people as well!
What a crazy ride this movie is!! Woooo these women where up and beyond amazing! Brava!
Film of the year. What a masterpiece. Also best actor for Demi Moore confirmed.
Too bad gory horror movies are never considered for actor nominations. If anything it will get visual fx noms.
Ugh demi is soooo mesmerizing
This was a really fantastic movie and Demi especially was so powerful in her performance
Amazing movie. One of the best in the last decade
Seeing this movie tonight...cant wait. I hear it is THE film of Demi Moore's career. ♡
Великолепная игра актеров, бесподобная Деми, которая действительно обнажила свою душу! Посыл фильма правильный, глубокий и оставляющий послевкусие. Визуал такой, что глаз не оторвать.. я надеюсь, что они получат много наград за эту картину.
This was by far the most captivating film for this year
the substance is about the friends we made along the way 🎀
🥰
Does anybody notice the cute sleeping dog ?😂
Thanks for pointing out the little gremlin sleeping. So cute!
She is Pilaf, démission darling dog
demi moore is such an icon its so amazing seeing her career grow since the 80s
This film is such a narrative of all of our lives women or men. ❤
How so?
@@miakolos8186 because we all grow old lol
@@becky1993x yes. And?
@@miakolos8186 so that is why this film is relatable to us, aging and growing old and not liking the way we look
Demi has had so many procedures, who is she trying to kid. Having said that she was freakingly brilliant in this movie.
That might also make her perfect the role. Sometimes people teach or talk about the things they themselves need to learn the most.
They are both just ✨✨✨✨
When her character brings back her giant photo, I felt that
Saw it yesterday, the whole rest of the world melted away while I was watching this!
Im just realizing that this ISN'T Monica from Friends.
Wow!! Such an original and brave message!! 😮
I can't believe Demi Moore is 61 years old.
To me Demi is aging so well. Despite the beauty, I'm always touched by woman who embraces aging with confidence and charm. We cant scape that anyway right? Your souls remains young.
The substance movie is different… honestly disturbing… must watch(careful, trailer won’t tell much)
The trailer tells you nothing 😂
@@anthonyrobertson6398 yeah but that's what a teaser do
Reminded me of Requiem of a dream, dont really know if they're related but wow they did an amazing job at showing what addiction and standards can do.
D.M. Pure class
Yesssss loved this movie . Beautiful message
What's sad is that Demi has clearly succumbed to the demand for youthful beauty
My thoughts exactly
Thats why she was part of this movie. It is a subject that is close to her and she clearly has had experience with it. Maybe now she is trying to accept herself more regardless of what is expected of her?
it looks like she took the fillers out
Absolutely amazing horror//satire//social commentary. Definitely best horror of the year, could possible be the best since 2020
This horror movie not just a bout horror and gore. Is about the ugliest humanity behavior.we also betrayed ourselves
Completamente!!!
Fantastic movie.
And it is a 💯 about accepting yourself 😮💨 what a movie 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
It actually inspired me to take advantage of my youth/beauty while im still youngish..and live life to the fullest 😂
demi is naturally beautiful... please no plastic surgery...
Yeah this topic hasn’t really been governed in an impactful way I feel like , just the crazy relationship with beauty and image sooo many people have
It was a very thought provoking movie, especially for women.
I thought Demi looked incredible in the film.
