Went to get my first guitar capped my budget at around 250 - 300, played most of the guitars in that price range and picked the one that felt the best too me, ended up with a Jackson JS22 and I absolutely love it and have been playing it almost every day since I got it
an *advice for buyer* (not first time buyer) If your local shop doesn't have a particular instrument, then just ask if they can order one to test. It's much less trouble, if something goes wrong with shipping (like i had). After shipping disaster, i asked guys in the local store to order one and if i like it and there are no issues, then i will buy it. Next week it arrived, i went to the store, played it and everything was as expected. Deal !
I really enjoy the Marty and Phillip videos. You guys are making cool content together, hope to see more gear stuff and videos like this where you take into consideration what the average beginner guitarist may be looking for.
Phil is the reason i bought my tele through Sweetwater and Marty you are the reason im still learning new guitar stuff...i can die now, so thank you sirs
In that price range, I would go used. I like the PRS SE from about fifteen years ago. The one with the hard tail. Sounds remarkably like a strat, and the Korean shop that makes them is a world class instrument maker themselves. Everything from the bridge to the nickel frets to the 100% nylon nut is specced by PRS, then they ship from Korea straight to the US factory, where they are set up by american luthiers. Paul Reed Smith claims that all of his guitars from World Music, Korea are studio-worthy instruments.
That really annoyed me. I watched this video as someone who hasn't touched a guitar in ten years and never really learned to play then, and I wanted to know how to test a guitar when you can't play. I didn't really learn anything of value from this video because they played things that I couldn't play as a beginner and didn't give examples or explain what to do when you can't play yet.
Man, you should make more collab videos! You two complete each other. It's very instructive. BTW, I own a Tagima Brazil Series (top of the line ones). It's a really great guitar.
The hum didn’t go away on old Strats when you were able to find what would, eventually become positions 2 and 4. The Hum cancelling bit didn’t happen until RWRP middle pickups came along much later.
Thanks Marty & Phil too bad this video wasn't around in the 80's when I was looking for my first guitar. In the 80's $100 to $200 dollars got you a guitar that was HORRIBLE. My only advice to anyone getting a guitar for the first time is feel is what matters the most. Try out 20 or so guitars then come back a couple of days later with someone who can play the ones that you liked. A high price tag doesn't always equal a better guitar.
Marty, I lived there and helped build a new power plant. I had new strings put on at that store. Carlsbad is a dream. The beach has a hill, great village booths on Wednesday.... Go to Carlsbad!
I didn't know who you were till after I bought my guitar. Guitar center had stacks of starter kits. Squire and Epiphone. I went with the Epiphone Les Paul special 2. $269 for the kit. The guitar looks and sounds great. The gig bag is paper thin and the amp is tiny. I replaced the amp with a fender mustang lt 25. My son picked a Mitchell $140 guitar and a $100 Orange amp. I am brand new to this. I can't put the guitar down, I totally suck but it's fun learning. 1 month in and I bought another guitar and lots of accessories. I also collect guns, another fun and expensive hobby. At least I don't have to pay range fees or drive out to the country to enjoy the guitar!
Ive had bad experiences with guitar shops on entry level guitars. If id do it again id buy a used guitar thats made in japan or indonesia for like 150-300€
I just bought my first guitar, bought a $2500 Breedlove Tigers Eye. Went in to get a Taylor 214 and left with much much more. I've used other people's guitars for a while now, I finally got my own. The Breedlove was soooo beautiful that I fell in love. It was a big pill to swallow, but couldn't be happier! It blows the Taylor 214ce out of the water on sound too. The bass and clarity just comes through so nicely. It just booms.
My first big guitar is a Fender Redondo. I put some elixer strings on it and my god it’s the best guitar I’ve played. I’ve played many different guitars around different stores and I love it. It’s the right guitar for me
I'd say, from a beginner's perspective, ease of playing is REALLY important. If the guitar isn't set up right, which may be true of most low budget guitars, playing it for an extended time will really be painful for your newbie finger tips. Also, as a beginner, their preferences is likely towards guitars that are similar to what someone else they know of and admire plays. At the beginner stage, how it sounds or how to get certain sounds is less important than how it feels and plays. There, that's my 2 cents worth :)
Epic concept for the video along with flawless execution. This video is funny in the way it makes fun of other TV shows yet informative. Keep up the great work, Marty. I also enjoy watching Phil in your videos. He is a cool dude. Cheers, guys!!
I just bought my first electric today. The first thing I said to the guy when one caught my eye was ”let me see how that feels on me”. Glad I wasn’t going on the wrong direction.
That’s a nice format, I like the concept of “Guitars Hunters”. Keep it going :) PS: Just one tiny little detail, maybe think about adding a mic on the cab to hear the amp better. (And if you want to keep the “room tone”, you can always mix the SM57 with your lapel mic(s))
I avoided Tele's for 50 years because I thought they were boring to look at. This year, I bought a Tele and it turns out... I love it! I love the feel and the tones... go figure!
And thank you for this video Marty because I recently started song writing and have been saving up my money for a while so this has been really helpful for getting me my first guitar

Bought a B-Stock Harley Benton SC Style in this Silver-Burst finish (i call it the Ghost Burst lol). I‘ve got a Fender MIM Strat, a few DIY Builds and a Squire Offset Tele... but this LP can clearly compete with my modded Fender Strat Soundwise! It‘s beautiful!
First guitar offbrand strat for 100$ tiny 5w amp for 100$ action on guitar was insanely high I just now lowered it and it plays pretty well. The nut is broken the pickups have rust on em and the machineheads and tuning pegs have some rust. I now have a boss katana 100. Also got a epiphone sg for 200$
When I got started learning in Guitar a few years ago I started with a Squier Affinity never really enjoyed the feeling of it just felt cheap, but latter on I picked up a Ibanez RGA42 FM night and day, it just felt right, and it's a guitar you do not want to put down, thus it inspires you to learn, and I believe that's what you want, that is also why I rather purchase my guitar at a store then online, I need to feel the instrument
@@guitarjay741 Nah I am not fan of Chinese made guitars, if I was offered a Indo Made one, cheap maybe I would purchase it and just swap out the electronics, and hardware,
Love this segment. Two recommendations -- amps (I like Yamaha THR10 -not a gig but great practice amp) and acoustic guitar (I have multiple but think lower cost Yamaha are amazing sound and quality)
So guessssss what? To start my guitar journey, I first picked up a used Squire Strat early 7/2022. Later that same month, I rolled into another guitar shop and was intro’d to the Tagima Tele. After heading out and watching just 2 RUclips reviews, I lost sleep that night, crawled back to the shop and picked up that Tagima. I’m making strides as a new player everyday, and will probably get a “mid-range/semi-pro” Strat next year. In the meantime, I’m keeping my inspiration fueled by investing in a real Ferrari… a Balaguire Diablo made in my home state of Pennsylvania.
I got myself a Epiphone Les Paul classic 2021. With a boss katana 50 as my first guitar so far love it now leaning to play is going to take time but it stays good i. Tune. But had it professional set-up.
My first guitar other than a cheap Alvarez acoustic from a pawn shop was a Mexican fender Strat. Probably paid to much accord to advice on this video but I loved it.
That was exactly my reasoning when I bought my first guitar, a mexican-made Strat. Richie Sambora inspired me to learn and that's how the natural choice for me was the Strat. After a while I had to get rid of it because its neck radius was too thick for my hand and it was impossibly uncomfortable for me to play for more than an hour. It also went out of tune constantly. Now I know what to look for in a guitar. It was a beautiful feeling to learn with a Strat but time for me to go into something more adequate for me.
My first electric was an 80 quid starter kit with an amp. My second (first proper one) was an epiphone les paul standard from 2017 or 2018 (I think) that was used for 250 quid.
I had a feeling of what I wanted and got a Squier Stratocaster HHS. Yah, its cheap. But I don't know what I'm doing. A few months in and now that I can hear the difference between guitars I would also suggest looking at your Amp, Speakers, and cords (strap included). That way I might consider your full starting budget as high as 350. Fun sound with a Line 6 Spyder II Amp. Love playing with my strats cheapness, only to still get some good sound. The Line 6 can really help with overdrive, and effects to get more variety of tones.
😊i have a squire fender telecaster it sounds great i been playing guitar over 50 years i chipped a little against something i covered it over with three band aids it blended in cause of the color my favorite guitar i bought four months ago is a gretsch streamliner guitar left handed all my guitars are left handed i been singing and playing guitar over 50 years
The first electric guitar I ever got was for my birthday, which I still have. It's a Kay that's styled very much like a Les Paul. It isn't bad for what it is. I now have an Elevation which is pretty much an exact copy of a Strat. (Not Strat quality, unfortunately.) I prefer the Elevation because it's easier to play and it far lighter. The Kay model weighs a ton. 😁
Good video Marty. Touched on important points. My 2 cents: Bring a guitarist with you when you shop. Not for influence, but rather to look at things that you, as a new player, wouldn't necessarily think about(cheap machineheads, nut space, action, etc). 2ndly, don't be afraid to go used. I have found $150 guitars like an Epi SG and a 1989 MIK Squire II that plays like a dream. Just another Avenue for the new guitarist. Thanks for all u do.
Great job guys, great video. I think content like this is very important so that more people who want to get into playing guitar can learn what fits them when it comes to buying a guitar.
I was in a guitar store the other day and i looked at a mexican made fender strat and an indonesian squire tele. The 1000 dollar fender fret ends were sharp and the 450 squire tele were rounded and smooth
Hello - Thank you for all the informational videos on guitar selection - they are very helpful - Could you also post a video on "What is the best guitar for Percussive playing?"
So by me buying a new 2022 Squire 70’s Vibe Left Handed Stratocaster HSS and a Fender Mustang GTX 100w amp wasn’t the right thing to do? Squire not a good brand in the Fender Family?
Shout out to Glarry guitars! I just bought my first guitar through them for $72 DELIVERED!! It's a Fender Strat clone bundle, including a 20w amp, and afew other freebies. Sounds and looks great! Went to get my first guitar capped my budget at around 250 - 300, played most of the guitars in that price range and picked the one that felt the best too me, ended up with a Jackson JS22 and I absolutely love it and have been playing it almost every day since I got it
It's great to see you guys collaborating - hope it happens some more
an *advice for buyer* (not first time buyer)
If your local shop doesn't have a particular instrument, then just ask if they can order one to test.
I got my Tele through Sweetwater last year also. Great company to deal with!
Marty: picks up beginner guitar and “shreds” to try it out.
Beginner: picks up Beginner guitar and makes no recognizable tune to “try it out”.
He also has Billy Corgan to help him and you don't 😂
I have to say, that reality show intro with the narration was brilliantly done and hilarious!
I started with a fender Strat cause my dad had one and it motivated me to actually deserve the guitar. So yeah, that was it, hope you enjoyed😂
My first big guitar is a Fender Redondo. I put some elixer strings on it and my god it’s the best guitar I’ve played. I’ve played many different guitars around different stores and I love it. It’s the right guitar for me
Less than a minute in and video is great. Love the guitar hunters. We got a sniffer and a pointer here. Great pair.
I just bought my first guitar (I'm 68). I bought a Gretsch G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody in Aspen Green
Epic concept for the video along with flawless execution. This video is funny in the way it makes fun of other TV shows yet informative. Keep up the great work, Marty. I also enjoy watching Phil in your videos. He is a cool dude. Cheers, guys!!
OMG I love this. Please do more! Maybe different budgets, different music styles etc.!!!
Two of my favorite guitar RUclips stars! Thanks guys!
How does this only have 500k views! One of the more fun guitar videos I’ve ever seen on RUclips!
And if you’re a lefty, it’s just, “sorry, you’ll have to find one online.”
Fuuuuuuck
Tell them to order one for ya
change the strings
I love Phillip and his knowledge is always impressive.
Thanks Marty and Phil. Great video. Shared it with my brother who is just starting to play.
But what if I want the one slash plays :(
Bryson Webster then buy it 🤟
TROSP lol
Start saving...a LOT of money! lol :)
@@mmccartney6579 epiphone make an entry level slash signature model lp
@@bombercountyblues Yes they do. You get what you pay for.
I just bought my first electric today. The first thing I said to the guy when one caught my eye was ”let me see how that feels on me”. Glad I wasn’t going on the wrong direction.
I'm sometimes unsure whether or not to trust these types of videos, but I feel very safe in the arms of a professional guitar sniffer
This is great collab work. Keep the videos coming!
That’s a nice format, I like the concept of “Guitars Hunters”. Keep it going :)
PS: Just one tiny little detail, maybe think about adding a mic on the cab to hear the amp better.
Great public service segment. Every kid who wants a first guitar for the holidays should see this!
Love you guys doing vids together Marty on the music side & Phil's gear mastery is a nice collaboration! Female voice over work is pleasant too
Loved the video. Two of my favorite youtubers! Look forward to seeing the next installment.
I just got my very first electronic guitar 2 months ago... for $70 🤣 I didn't know any better 🤷🏿♂️ i plan on getting something better after I learn how to play
Carlsbad?! My home town!
Perfect timing, thanks Marty and Phillip! This is a local store for me too 🤟
it is awesome that you guys are working together, I can't wait for more content, I'm very happy two of my top music gurus are working together, BAM!!!!! super deadly, love you guys, keep it up!!!
That's not true in all cases. My friend has a 20th anniversary affinity and it sounds and feels fantastic
@@guitarjay741 Nah I am not fan of Chinese made guitars, if I was offered a Indo Made one, cheap maybe I would purchase it and just swap out the electronics, and hardware,
My first electric guitar was a Squier Contemporary Telecaster RH. I got it this Christmas.
When your buying a guitar TOMORROW and trying to find advice but your getting an acoustic: *panik*
Same
@@keertanamurali1042 same lol
lmao it’s a year later, did it work out?
@@forgetful_hq yeah I got a cool acoustic black guitar with a port to be plugged in to speakers
I have a 50 style epiphone Les Paul 14 years still sounds great
Love this segment.
Love these videos with Phil! Great content.
I got myself a Epiphone Les Paul classic 2021. With a boss katana 50 as my first guitar so far love it now leaning to play is going to take time but it stays good i. Tune. But had it professional set-up.
I just bought a seafoam green Squier classic vibe Jaguar and so far no issues!
I LOVED this video, I enjoyed it very much. Can you do please do a similar vid for guitars just under 1000 or that price range
Great video you 2! Like to see more of you two again
Sniffer and Pointer are my favourite guitar hounds.
My first electric was an 80 quid starter kit with an amp. My second (first proper one) was an epiphone les paul standard from 2017 or 2018 (I think) that was used for 250 quid.
A better crossover than Endgame by far
Tagima was my first bass brand, it was great!!! If you’re a beginner, get a tagima, it’s worth it if you’re a beginner
its a brazilian brand, i was actually thinking about selling my Dolphin and getting a tagima
This was fun - love the collaborations between my two favorite guitar channels! Looking forward to more of these. Great work as always, guys!
Love the technical info
Always here to support Marty ! 💯
So by me buying a new 2022 Squire 70’s Vibe Left Handed Stratocaster HSS and a Fender Mustang GTX 100w amp wasn’t the right thing to do? Squire not a good brand in the Fender Family?
You did fine, all the guitars these days are solid
Wow you live in Carlsbad. I love the music museum down there. Forget Memphis.
Shout out to Glarry guitars! I just bought my first guitar through them for $72 DELIVERED!! It's a Fender Strat clone bundle, including a 20w amp, and afew other freebies. Sounds and looks great! I had an acoustic that a friend gave me, but I just really stepped my game up! Thanks for all the AWESOME lessons Marty!💖✌😀
