    I love this sonata, full of rhythm and wonderfully interpreted by this gifted cellist. Gastinel is a personal favourite and so is Shostakovich.

    i thought music was enjoytable... that's why i took on the viola in 6th grade, and being in 8th grade and watching the hard face of that woman... SMILE! Even though my teacher says not to while playing i still do! this piece was remarkable!

    If you are talking about passion in facial expressions, or extraneous movement, than I disagree. She has a beautiful clean, and crisp technique with a very powerful sound. This sonata doesn't give much liberty to be passionate.

    That was intense! I don't have nearly enough Shostakovich in my collection. I do have the Cello concerto No. 1, op. 107 with Rostropovich. I find it a joyous bewildering whirlwind of complexity. This piece is in a similar vein,

  • @3Glimpse3
    @3Glimpse3 12 лет назад

    Not only Yo Yo Ma, but also Rostropovich, Pau Casals, of course the gorgeous Jacqueline du Pre and so on. The thing about cello is that you supposedly learn it by sensations, because it does not have frets like a guitar, also because you are sitting there almost behind it, holding the instrument, like if you were literally embracing the melody.
    I don't think she is playing like a robot, she just expresses her emotions in a different way :)

    she's amazing but what really makes me want to burst out laughing (in both delight and amazement) is her very good (but very robotical) form when playing. Don't get me wrong, she's brilliant, but it would be nice maybe to see more movement? lol it's like the only emotion she is capable of showing is her face at 1:23 :P
    haha she's definitely more of a success than me though. Well done with the harmonics!!!!!! All the best!!! KEEP IT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

    @redhotchiliangel i do not agree on the robot part you mentioned....i think it s a matter of character, others seem to be more passionate on their face and others don't but doesn't mean that they don't feel the piece......as it comes to the first two words of your comment(clean,beauty) i totally agree! :)

    @LifeOfLiterature2 Si! Es un sobrenombre que le inventaron por ahí, me pareció muy cómico, como que le da un toque más bien tierno... Y Shostakovich es todo menos tierno, a mi parecer.

    Beautiful. The cello player was fantastic, so much concentration. However, more dynamics should be used and a slight less distortion from the cello in a few places.

  • @anneholtz
    @anneholtz 14 лет назад

    The cello sounds amazing, I love the melody. The performance is a little bit too impersonal. But I guess that's just the way the cellist enjoys the music, because, obviously, judging from the powerful yet melodic sound of the cello, she IS enjoying her performance. Quit calling her a robot!!

  • @davehshs651
    @davehshs651 15 лет назад

    Like much of Shostakovich's music, this would make a great soundtrack for "Invasion of the Killer Zombies." Picture hundreds of soulless zombies marching into town, their limbs moving spastically with the music, as citizens flee.

    "Shosta", as you call him, would certainly be delighted with the pianist performance. The cellist does, indeed, rape the musical idea here.

  • @Kwert

    Anyone who thinks this is "robotic", clearly isn't actually listening to what's going on. Try putting on the video and just listening to the music without watching how she performs.

    I like the performance a lot. But and keep in mind this is just my opinion, that it's played too severely. I've heard recordings of the piece that make it very playful and spontaneous, which I like. But this was beautiful and I would definitely listen to this recording again.

  • @Celloman4044

    To say that she doesn't have passion is a very foolish thing-- considering the amount of time it takes to get this extreme skill and discipline that she displays here. I don't think work that hard for something they don't feel for. I think the word you were looking for instead of passion isis something more along the lines of "Make'more'faces'so'I'can'pretend'you're'Yo-YoMa"

  • @Cellolife97
    @Cellolife97 13 лет назад

    @idkwhourandidc so just because she doesn't show many emotions in her facial expressions means that she doesn't enjoy playing?? Do you think you could play this piece and focus on doing anything to portray emotion while still playing well? Besides looking at her and seeing her emotions isn't what this is about. that's why I can't watch Yo-Yo Ma, yeah its great that he gets so in the music but sometimes he's just too passionate and it distracts me when I just want to listen to the music.
