  • Larry Nassar's apology was less than convincing. Cenk Uygur, Brett Erlich, and Aida Rodriguez, hosts of The Young Turks, discuss. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

    "Larry Nassar, who sexually abused more than 100 young athletes in his role as a team doctor for USA Gymnastics and as a sports medicine physician at Michigan State University, got his sentence today. He received 40 to 175 years in Michigan state prison for criminal sexual abuse, in addition to the 60 years he received on federal child pornography charges in July.
    Before sentencing him, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina told Nassar, “It is my honor and privilege to sentence you. Because, sir, you do not deserve to walk outside of a prison ever again.”
    ...
    The sentencing was the end of seven days of victims’ impact statements from 163 people, including Olympic gold medalists Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber. The statements also featured parents of victims, including Donna Markham, whose daughter, Chelsea, was abused by Nassar when she was 10. Chelsea committed suicide in 2009 at the age of 23. Donna told the Lansing State Journal, “I wanted [Nassar] to hear what happened to my daughter ... the fact that he started the process of her self-destruction.”
    Now, the attention turns to authorities at USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University. Michigan State University was made aware of accusations against Nassar as early as 1997 and did nothing. The NCAA has opened an investigation into MSU’s handling of the case.”*

    It isn't just Nassar that should be doing time. It's all the folks that the girls told and who didn't do anything to help them. Nassar had a huge support network to keep him going. Name them, and ask them why they allowed Nassar to keep his job.

      It's the same in the UK. Whenever a prolific abuser like Jimmy Saville is unmasked it is revealed that lots of people (in his case BBC management) knew but kept quiet. They hardly ever receive the punishment they deserve as accessories to the crimes.

Death and it's done or rotting away for the rest of your days locked in a small cage like the animal you are. In PC your locked up in a small closet sized cell for 23 hrs a day. You get 1 hour a day out of your cell in a small exercise yard and being a child molester he would be isolated from even the other PC prisoners. My greatest education on people and why the world is the way it is was a lesson in psychopathy. When it was finally understood that this is a real pathology present in approximately one percent of the word-wide population, then a person like Nassar comes into focus. Fortunately, the vast majority of us experience emotions like sympathy, guilt, shame, remorse. A psychopath does not experience emotions in the way most people do. They are incapable of reflecting and empathizing with anothers' suffering and thus feels no responsibility or accountability for anothers' pain that they in fact have caused. Its nearly impossible for most people to imagine a consciousness such as this because our humanity is so deeply defined by our capacity to understand and even feel another's pain. The psychopath is simply not burdened by this, only by the consequences of getting caught and having to endure the punishment. One might look to the work of Dr. Robert Hare and his long and comprehensive work in studying this phenomenon in people. He gives an overwhelming case that there is an irreducible percent of the human race that appear to just pop up that harbor a consciousness that is primarily predatorial. He even coined this section of our population as "intra-species predators". The results of his research appears to show that these kind of people are born this way regardless of culture, history, race or environment, and that the behavioral symptoms of this pathology can be detected at a very young age. Should this assessment end up being the case, it would be a disastrous waste of energy hoping or waiting for any kind of apology or amend. Anything that looked to be one would strictly be a manipulation to try and get off the hook or make things easier for themselves. You will rarely hear a true psychopath apologize for what they've done. That just doesn't exist within their constitution.

      Probably a lot. Picture this: the engineers from Prometheus but 5'4" with no muscles. So he comes in for his first day as a temp already angry, not wanting to look at anybody. Of course, everybody wants to know what's going on so he tells us that he's only there because he lost his last job dues to being in jail for a few days. He won't tell us why. We don't worry too much because this is a plastic factory. The only people working there are young people just starting off and a variety of felons.
      People kept asking so eventually he admits that he had naked pictures of a 14 year old on his phone. He could have said he was remorseful, or he was intoxicated, or anything to show that he knew what he did was wrong. He didn't do any of that. All he could talk about was how much of an inconvenience it was to get caught. His wife is leaving him, he shouldn't be punished because he didn't touch the girl and so on. He would try to point out that everybody is attracted to 14 year olds. I had to inform him that that's not the case. (I'll admit I've seen some developed 16-17 year olds but that's still not an excuse to go after them in that way.)
      I think he did a lot more than have naked pictures. 1) He doesn't understand or care about how others feel about his actions. [Psychopath] 2) At 30-some years old, he's still attracted to 14 year olds. [Pedophile] This guy had to have done more than pictures.

    This monster, control freak, criminal and psychopath is abusing the court system and his victims (now survivors) for one last time trying to portray himself as victim.
    There is no way that crime of this magnitude could have gone uncovered and unpunished by “assistance” by those who covered up for him. This case calls for some sort of further investigation to identify other individuals and institutions responsible for this damage done to so many innocent young girls, families and communities.

    I watched all 7 days of victim impact statements, it was rough and powerful. What you imparted as a synapses of an overwhelming pain pales in comparison of what actually was said. Let me add the list of people culpable for the damage done to these young girls and women . First of all the University of Michigan, who had programs for children without oversight and ignored complaints and one case paid off the victim with a settlement . Others were told they would not be listen to, so just "shut up." The camps in Michigan and Texas who would not allow parental supervision nor contact , no cell phones allowed and withheld food and punished the girls physically , mentally , emotionally to make them complacent and subservient to the coaches wims. the camps are now closed and being investigated Federally. The American Gymnastics Association, who fostered these horrible conditions and hid violations from universities and camps . And then there's the United States Olympic Committee who promoted violence and possibly protected Nassar from being caught . These women repeated the names of these organizations from statement to statement asking for accountability, asking where is it where things went wrong, and asking what are they going to do now . I believe the board of the American gymnastics Association has been dissolved as of today. All members taking accountability in their ejection from the board. the American Olympic committee too has put in calls for resignation , not clear as to who accepted . But it is university was doubled down and said they do no wrong and that the vice chair of the University stated two days ago during the last days of statements that all these women are up for money . Other than the first two days of testimony no one from University was present . They were out at a Nike event, too busy to be present . they except no culpability though at least three members of the university staff +2 psychiatrists on staff and other athletic trainers all neglected to follow the law . They are required to report it as part of their job but instead they did nothing or told somebody who then punish the girls . They are in violation of both state and federal statutes . These women and I and others are waiting to see if they will be prosecuted for state and federal violations . Another note you didn't mention was why Nassar got the original 60 years by the feds . He had over 30,000 child pornography images on personal electronic devices . That was the first trial there was to be a second one, but that did not happen because Nassar took a plea deal based on the seven victims originally brought fourth. Impact statements allowed those who feared , those who froze and those too far away to make their pain and suffering known. That is why they're over 160 victims as of the 7th day of statements when they originally thought there would be no more than 70. The last of the impact statements was Ms. Denhollender, one of the strongest presenters and one of the seven . She could've sunk her words deeper into Mr. Nasser, but she chose to wield a wider blade in an attempt to sever the tentacles of misconduct , violence , and cover up that exist as SOP in the world of competitive American gymnastics. The women all requested that those who helped Mr. Nasser and promoted such a cruel and dangerous environment be held accountable , across the board . Now you should be asking and looking and in the end telling us what happens next .

The callousness necessary for this criminal history is appalling and one of the hardest things to change is when a person cares so little for others and/or is so blind to their interests.

    I'd like to pose a question to anyone who'd like to share their views.
    Do you think a minimum sentence of 100 years is justified?
    Personally I do not believe a sentence to death to be justified. I think that anyone, absolutely regardless of what crimes they commited should receive a second chance or more. Don't interpret this to mean that I don't see him as a heinous criminal, he absolutely is, and should be in prison for a long time. But I don't think that we can claim the moral highground of humanity after sentencing someone to death in prison.
    In my opinion, fifty years should be the maximum sentence anyone can receive for their crimes. During this time everything should be done to help the prisoner understand their own crimes, and help them to take responsibility for those crimes not because of a sentence, but because they were rehabilitated.
    I know many will find this to be insane, I just wanted to put my opinion out there, and would love to listen to yours.
    Oh and please everyone be respectful to each other.

    THINGS like Nassar get away with acts like this because IT has support, belonging and even a following. The vulnerable are not being given easy access to express their experience of abuse. That thing Nassar, has support, a stage and the following (community) to practice or carry out what IT feels is normal. Unfortunately. far too many of us stand idly by, sensing something is wrong and allow it to continue. It is time we stood up and voice our suspicions no matter what the position of IT in society. We help to create our community by accepting the society or environment we live in. We cater to IT, we give trust to IT, we pay homage to IT no matter what ITs act in the hope that, if we look away or divert our gaze, IT might share with us some of the spoils or fruit of our hard work or like a bully just live us alone and abuse someone else. Time to take a stand by taking a stand.

    This may sound a bit offhanded. I apologize for this in advance.
    But I always wondered about the design & purchasers of the uniforms.... Like, why does a female need to wear a uniform that exposes much of the legs, & part of the bum, while the guys keep most of their bods covered? Who makes the uniforms? Who designed them?? Who buys them for the team members?? Who consents to it?? Just curious....
    I don't wish to sound crass, but thinking about this, how it could contribute a factor in the sport being in sexual abuse scandals :(

    • @jprevatt
      @jprevatt 6 лет назад +4

      This has been a similar design concept for the last few decades....very high cut leg openings, but 3/4 to full length sleeves for the girls.
      Tank top style one piece jumpsuit for the guys

    • @aerialkate
      @aerialkate 6 лет назад +12

      J Prevatt It's not a crass question and I don't know if there's some technical, anatomically-driven reason for it. I don't know if it makes the disciplines any easier. I really hope the costumes weren't designed by perverts just so that fellow perverts can get an eyeful. I suppose it was all designed many decades ago now. I remember the uniforms for the girls being very similar in the 1970s when I was a kid. "Who agreed to it?" like I said, I think most parents would simply think, "these are what the girls wear in gymnastics" (if they think anything at all.)
      I don't like the idea that such uniforms would "provoke" sexual assaults from pervs like this fella anyway - though I'm not suggesting that's what you meant. I mean most men wouldn't do what he did when presented with a child in a leotard. That's insulting to men in general. Still..you do wonder why the marked difference in the costumes between the males and females came about in the first place.
