I have visited China twice and on both occasions was well received, well treated and thoroughly enjoyed their high speed rail system. Every accommodation I stayed at was very clean and modern.
The one thing that shocked me when I first visited China was how quickly the food arrives after you place your order even at a very busy restaurant. I don’t recall waiting for more than 5 mins for the first dish to arrive. Amazing speed.
When I first went to their parks it was so amazing to see many doing different activities. it was so fun to see people dancing, playing musical instruments, taichi, playing ribbons, kicking shuttle cocks. it was so different from the parks in my country.
It's all to do with health. A wide variety of food help balance the body rather than too much of the same thing. Hot water helps digestion, core body temperature stable, soothe the throat. That means you can ask personal questions too and be blunt, freedom of speech. More hygienic to squat and easy on the bowels. Similar to giving birth, more natural. Sharing food helps with social life. I love your videos.
When I first went to China more than 15 years ago, I too was bemused when I saw people just drinking hot water in summertime. However, the local were utterly confounded when they saw me walking around drinking cold beer in the middle of winter or when I went into a shop and asked for a bottle of cold beer and it was-15C outside! They thought I was crazy, lol! Loved the food, the people, the culture, the city bustle and my time living in Beijing and I hope to return soon.

I love the way you presented your view and impressions of China from a non bias foreigners point of view. As for the sharing of food from a common plate, the proper way is to have a pair of common chopsticks for taking the food from the common plate to your private dish. Then use your private pair to bring the food to your mouth. That is the way we were brought up. We only share food without the common and private chopsticks separation with our immediate family. Actually most restaurants adopt this practice. I am surprised to see that in your video that was not the case.
It means that you never visited a chinese house or friends. Practically sharing food in their house or at a chinese restuarant is atandard for chinese all over the world!
On grass: I think the restrictions are mainly in northern China, as dry weather or lack of good grass supplies make grass maintenance quite difficult. In southern China such as Guangdong, you can definitely sit and play on the grass!
What you explained is not true at all - in south China, the grass is wet and muddy , there is no way you can sit on grass in south China...BTW, watch out the insects and mosquito in grass...
In some areas of southern China (such as Shenzhen), you can sit on the grass and play at any time. Perhaps because of the climate, it's suitable for the grass and other plants to grow.
Lol.. it is common in asia. Folks will argue/ fight to pay the bills ( if the amount is small).... If the amount is big, folks will suddenly be quiet ... 🤣🤣
Interesting observations 👍😁Chinese are direct people, they comment things in a direct manner. In the west, you may say she is not exactly ugly to compliment a pretty girl, but in China, you would just say she's pretty. Same goes to other obvious physical features like fat, four eyes (people wearing glasses) short etc where in the west, it will be regarded as very rude, but in China, it is said among intimate friends and is OK. In the west, when you compliment someone's child is very cute, you would say thank you, but in China, you would respond, nah he/she is not really, he/she is a monkey.
I'm 71 and helping a 23 year old girl in Shenzhen with her English via WeChat. She occasionally tells me that she's menstruating. Too much information for a reserved Englishman! 😂 Often been asked my age when in China.
The direct questions are fascinating in a way, especially when you know that often (on the work floor for example) people aren't that direct and will go around in circles to ask you something. And yes, there are lots of comments about people's physical appearance too.
Woman from Netherlands posts video in English about living in China. Most of the US speak only English and don't understand the hard work and perseverance it takes to become bi, or multi lingual.
Happy to hear that you are beginning to appreciate many aspects of chinese culture. When you start to appreciate and accept that not every culture need to be similar, you then become a more civil person. Every culture have its pluses and minuses, there is no such thing as wrong or right in any culture because the way of life, the history and tradition of each culture will always be different. Of course culture is not static, it change with the times and new influences.
Besides the benefit of getting fresh food, wet markets are much more environmentally friendly than modern supermarkets... Eliminating all that plastic packaging is a blessing to Mother Earth.

The other thing about drinking hot or warm water is that it's easier for digestion. Drinking cold water, your body needs to raise that water's temperature before it can be properly absorbed.
For the 6th one, from my perspective, it's totally opposite. I am Chinese and now living in Canada, and I was shocked people would still drink ice water/tea in winter. Oh boy, it's -20℃ outside...!😱 Now I am not shocked anymore, but still prefer to drink warm or room-temperature water in winter.😂

Met my wife in China, discovered most of the same things you did. What you quickly realize is that there is more than one way to do many things, not better, not worse, just different. Embrace the adventure.
Wet market definitely gives you much more fresher stuffs and varieties. Western countries are so used to chill and frozen stuffs. I would prefer fresh stuffs any day. Foods even taste and smell better.
@@GoYvon When fresh stuffs are so easily available one doesn't buy so much things for cooking and to keep. Usually people there buy foods for cooking for the whole day only. Thats why usually every morning Chinese house keepers go shopping in the wet market. Its a completely different lifestyle.

I'm interested to know, what's your motivation for doing these videos? Is it to move out of teaching? I also lived in China (in Wuhan) but not as long as you. Most of the foreigners I met in Wuhan were English teachers like yourself, or university lecturers. I was a little different, I had a startup there. One question I'd love to hear your views on is how secure you feel in your life there? I mean with visas, policy changes, etc. A lot of long timers left in recent years, has that impacted you much?

But the heat in Strong Yang in Chinese medicine so hot warm water is a balanced yin yang drink Btw : if u go to Canton or Guong Zhou and Hong Kong u can order a beverage called Yin Yang made from half coffee and half tea...!!!
Long long ago, Chinese used to eat with individual plate. However, sharing = caring. If one worry about hygiene, then there is a special chopsticks known as 公筷, which mean chopsticks for not personal use.
Thank you for an objective & informative video that doesn’t carry customary cliches or China bashing. Extraordinarily beautiful woman weighing traditional Chinese medicine herbs. Doesn’t look to me like an oppressed population longing for liberation by the US or the U.K. presumably, many scenes were shot in the summer of 2020. I note hardly any one was wearing a mask whilst we in HK are mostly incarcerated and required by law to wear mask in communal areas. Sadly Mainland China will not allow us to visit to bring in our COVID.
I find the part on fighting to pay the bill super amusing, where 2 men fighting outside, on the road side. How nice it is after a heavy hearty meal, and people pay the bill for you....
Obviously you have adapted to Chinese culture and the local environment perfectly well, and I am pretty sure you will experience a reverse cultural shock if you go back to your home country for a visit.

don't sit on grass: i think this apply in northern china more. in south, plenty water and sunshine make the grass growing faster, u may enter grass land sometimes.
When I went to US for the first time 22 years ago, I was surprised seeing people walking on the grasslands. Later on I realized the reason of China’s no-step-on-grass rule, too many people.
The thing with the grass is not everywhere. Maybe just in parks who reach a certain level of crowd/density. I have Songshan Lake park in Dongguan, near me, where lots of people sit, eat, play, raise tents on the grass. Also, public toilets have improved recently. Me, in the last 8 years in Shenzhen and Dongguan i never stumble on toilets without doors. With all the others, i had exactly same feelings!

Squatting toilet is actually much more healthy than sitting toilet. We actually delivered MORE, or I should say we actually empty more stock by squats. Anyone who done Yoga should agree with me that squatting is a habit.

I normally don’t take cold water or cold drinks because I feel better and more healthy with hot water especially early morning before start my work or start my day.It cleared my lungs and it make me feel more better and keep my body warm
The only thing I would suggest is to have public spoons or chopsticks for each dish for people to get their food to their own plate or bowl and use their own chopsticks to enjoy the food. It won't transmit disease and more hygenic.

Doesn’t look to me like an oppressed population longing for liberation by the US or the U.K. presumably, many scenes were shot in the summer of 2020. I note hardly any one was wearing a mask whilst we in HK are mostly incarcerated and required by law to wear mask in communal areas. Sadly Mainland China will not allow us to visit to bring in our COVID.

Obviously you have adapted to Chinese culture and the local environment perfectly well, and I am pretty sure you will experience a reverse cultural shock if you go back to your home country for a visit.
Thank you for posting this video about things in China that shock foreigners. Very informative video. I think you just reversed Yin and Yang when you talking about the cold water and hot water. I think hot water represents Yang and cold water represents Yin.

don't sit on grass: i think this apply in northern china more.
in south, plenty water and sunshine make the grass growing faster, u may enter grass land sometimes.

When I went to US for the first time 22 years ago, I was surprised seeing people walking on the grasslands. Later on I realized the reason of China’s no-step-on-grass rule, too many people.
Hope we can still see food that serve to Emperors in ancient times. You will be shock again and again.

The thing with the grass is not everywhere. Maybe just in parks who reach a certain level of crowd/density. I have Songshan Lake park in Dongguan, near me, where lots of people sit, eat, play, raise tents on the grass. Also, public toilets have improved recently. Me, in the last 8 years in Shenzhen and Dongguan i never stumble on toilets without doors. With all the others, i had exactly same feelings!

I was shocked in certain area too when I first went to China, even I'm a oversea Chinese.
Squatting toilet is actually much more healthy than sitting toilet. We actually delivered MORE, or I should say we actually empty more stock by squats.
Anyone who done Yoga should agree with me that squatting is a habit.

I normally don’t take cold water or cold drinks because I feel better and more healthy with hot water especially early morning before start my work or start my day.It cleared my lungs and it make me feel more better and keep my body warm
The only thing I would suggest is to have public spoons or chopsticks for each dish for people to get their food to their own plate or bowl and use their own chopsticks to enjoy the food. It won't transmit disease and more hygenic.
