- Over the course of it’s 184 episode long run spanning 9 seasons, The Flash has had 19 total main villains, 4 total more than Arrow had which included all the flashback main villain as while the first 4 seasons had just one main villain each, season 5 had multiple and season 6 and onwards was split up into arcs with each arc having a different main villain and sometimes more than one. Because of this most of the main villains come from the later seasons which is a bad thing because arguably almost all of the good ones come from the earlier seasons. In this video I’ll be looking at all 19 main villains and rank them from worst to best for one final time.

Matt definitely rules this role, sucks he didn’t get much screentime in the actual show.

zoom was perfect, one of, if not, my favorite villain overall. And season 2 being fantastic as well.
It was criminal that he wasn't brought back before season 9. They could've done smth with the time wraith pulling him out of the timeline back in the 100th episode and have him return the next season or smth

Zoom is my favourite Speedster villain till date. Thawne is just the nemesis. He is the dark opposite.
Mirror Monarch was very attractive. The mirror gimmick was cool and not a bad B grade villain because of her sympathetic back story

I miss old speedster villians. How Zoom could kill everyone on the room with superspeed. Did we saw scenes like this? Godspeed since his appearence in s6 killed only 1 people(Nora's best friend). In past, you knew that evil speedster could have kill everyone on the room. And everyone had his special thing. Thawne with his vibrations. Zoom with time remnants. Savitar with blades. Now, everyone just throw lightning at each other. Everyone gets plot armor, even NPCs.

Zoom is easily the best villain in my opinion. He had all the mystery of the Reverse Flash along with the Menace that came from being highly intelligent but he was far more ruthless and brutal, having zero problem murdering anyone whenever he felt like it.
Plus the black eyes, the demonic suit, Tony Todd's voice really made you believe he was something inhuman.
Facts. Zoom was the best thing they did in the show. Was legitimately terrifying and brutal. Shame he never got another arc. They could’ve done something with the black flash thing and had him regain his consciousness in the time wraith form

bloodwork was probably the only he got to think out very well before the constraints of being a showrunner were upon him (doesn't excuse his future failings).
The actor was definitely a factor, and a amazing choice. Most people remember him as Mohinder from Heroes, and he blossomed in that rule too
I think people forget but the actors and their ability to preform in the role matters a lot. I think thr actor for god speed was terrible even without the writing.
Cobalt Blue had potential in my opinion. The rivalry he has with Barry was practically there, since of course he is Eddie, and the concept of the NSF choosing him makes perfect sense.

Well yes he had so much potential. People have been wanting him to show up as Eddie for years. But the fact that they had a shorter season and STILL decided to do two arcs and like 4 episodes of filler really ruined what the character could have been. I would have loved if we had an episode to focus on each speedster villain he brought back instead of them being effortlessly defeated by all of the side characters, while Barry gets his ass kicked by an inexperienced speedster.
If NSF can return people from death, it doesn't make sense. Then, Zoom or Savitar would be perfect choice. Since, they would gladly accept power and gets revenge on Barry, without turning them to bad guys.

Like how was it created, how did the NSF place itself in it, and why bother using if it literally struck Eddie with red lightning in the first episode of the arc. It was clearly talking to Eddie without the Crystal

I feel maybe if The Flash had been given its usual 20 episode run they could have really fleshed out Cobalt blue and he could have been a really good villain. As they had to try and cram it into a 4 episode arc they really didnt do the character justice
The first 4 seasons were so good. It's a true shame it ended like this.

Personally I’m a Godspeed fan but he was in the show for way to little. Like only 5 episodes and the finale… which… ugh
for me he wasn’t the only good villain, i also liked despero and deathstorm
Although Bloodwork didn’t have as much screentime as most of the other villains before him, I think he was executed very well. Honestly I don’t know how else they could have expanded his arc.
I was more than satisfied with what they did with Bloodwork. He was a proper antagonist for his arc. He appeared in Evas arc one time to show how cool and dangerous he is.
Best of all, he appeared as the main villain of the last Arrowverse crossover with Oliver Queen.
He had great plans, motivations, powers and all. And he was defeated properly as well. Im glad they put him in 3.

I’m glad you mentioned how Grant should have appeared more often as Savitar in Season 3. On its own, the fact that Savitar IS Barry is why I believe, if Grant had been given more of chance, Savitar could have surpassed Thawne and Zoom for the title of best villain. He had the potential!
I think the reason why Cicadas name is different is because Nora altered the timeline at the end of season 4 and someone else became Cicada

Glad to see Devoe getting the respect he deserves, season 4 is easily my favorite season, it was the first time Barry was up against someone who could think faster then he could run and devoe really had a plan for all of Barry’s plans.. really wish they didn’t go down the body swop route as well though. Also something about savitar had me shook, bro was WAY faster then zoom and the way they showed iris “dying”? Nah

Man we took those first 4 seasons for granted, all those villains despite being a slow burn, we’re all built up to well, made very intimidating, and badass and I feel like the flash just never caught that same magic after season 4

It's weird that Matt letscher eobard only got a full season villain story in legends and not in flash is crazy to think about. Grant and Matt work so well together with the little we have seen from them.
Blame Eric Wallace
Blood work is actually my 2nd fav villain behind og thawne. I just love how blood work would tempt Barry in “the last temptation of Barry Allen part 1” he was so menacing and felt like a actual threat
Also it gave us one of the best laugh out loud moments in the entire show with the dinner table scene where everyone has the black shit in their mouth lol
I feel like not having the rogues led by captain cold as the main villains of season was a missed opportunity, the rivalry between cold and flash would've been so cool to develop over an entire season
They should've made them the villains of Season 1 and Wells the Villain of Season 2.
I just wish they had brought miller back the final season

Season 6 episode 18 is the best godspeed adaptation we’ve gotten imo
I preferred Godspeed that Nora defeated. Atleast he was a proper villain, who was a great threat as Nora’s first enemy.
Karan Oberoi’s Godspeed was an amnesiac wimp who let his clones wreck havoc only to get his memory and powers from the heroes, cringe for a while, do a Star Wars fight and get stabbed by Thawne.

I really feel Savitar was wasted towards the ending of S3 which is pretty reasonable why he would have been placed in number 4.
Ahh thank youuu!! The Thinker when played by Neol Sandilands was so gooooood, such underrated actor and character!! It was so refreshing seeing a non speedster villain as the msin one, his origin was so good, and the actor absolutely embodied him perfectly, the soomthing yet disturbing way he talked, his emotions, Just perfect. And Bloodwork is so underrated, I loved his role in season in as well, he outshined the other villains.
I recently watched the first 2 seasons and Zoom is just so much more interesting than I even remember. I'd completely forgotten how much he parallels Barry and how much he pushes Barry's development over the course of the season. Season 1 Thawne was the best villain, but as an antagonistic force I think Zoom is unrivalled, the way he makes Barry suffer and grow over the course of the season, and even by the end he's broken enough to create Flashpoint. But what's even more interesting is the subtle things, like the difference between Hunter and Zoom. Zoom is a monster, he's not a man, he's an unstoppable force, but Hunter is very much a man, and I love how quickly you see his insanity when he takes off the mask. As soon as he starts talking you're like "oh wow this guy is just a maniac", but he's stuck as that little boy that watched his dad murder his mom, that's why he needs to be the monster. He's just like Barry, except different circumstances in Barry's life saved him from becoming Hunter, instead Barry is stuck as that little boy who's mother was murdered, and thats why he needs to be the hero. All of this culminating in Barry using Zoom's signature move, the ability he used to "play hero", and being an actual hero, sacrificing himself to save the multiverse.

Tony Todd as Zoom and Tobin Bell as Savitar is what made those two villains two of my favorites. I’m a big horror movie fan and Tony Todd in Candyman and Tobin Bell in Saw are amazing
I'd say that out of all of them, Zoom is my favourite villain. I don't know how to word it but RF to me is more like an "antagonist" and not a villain, like he doesn't compare to Zoom's ruthlessness/brutality when I look back at Seasons 1 & 2.
Sure RF was definitely a 'bad guy' but he had clear motives for why he ended up doing what he does, Zoom on the other hand was (as described in S9) a junkie who didn't care who got in his way to get the speed he so desperately wanted. RF was more meticulous and cunning in comparison.
What about season 3 that was good too.

Factssss, Zoom was scary and fucking brutal asf. Remember he came back in season 5 and scared the shit out of Barry and Nora 😂 that's how much of an impact he had on Barry
It really speaks to how overused Thawn was that they didn’t bring him back again to be the final villain of the series.
14:42 Eobard mentioned how he put on the Wells face to mess with Barry because he has more of an emotional connection to that face then Matt's Thawne + in the words of Thawne "Hansome"
I like Matt’s version more then Tom’s because that psychotic side of RF is true to who Eobard is in the comics. Now he is cold and calculating but he goes out of his way to let Barry know he’s tryna destroy his life by acting crazy. And BL what you said about Wellsobard being overused and written poorly in later seasons, I completely agree with that.
Reverse has fluctuated so vastly and there’s also different versions and actors playing him; you can’t just do one single ranking for him, I agree it has to be by era or season/arc. At this point, with the finale, even Savitar and Zoom get a second version (which are terrible).

Wish we saw more of Matt’s reverse flash. Don’t get me wrong I love Tom when he’s reverse flash . But man Just Matt’s energy is so good especially when him and Grant are acting on screen together.
Tom is great but, the real eobard isn’t Tom, they kept using his face just because eobard took over Harrison wells body, but so many eobards have died that the real one has always felt dead, no reverse flash has felt menacing Spence season 1
Agreed Cobalt Blue could’ve been better if he just had more episodes to develop. Aldo fans wanted Cobalt Blue because they wanted him, Eddie to be Barry’s long lost twin brother like in the comics
10:43 They explained in this season that his name changed because of changes in the timeline (Nora stopping the enlightenment, changing the present events causing Cicada to come earlier than when his suppose too) so the original cicada doesn't become Cicada. I would direct swap number 11 and 13, as the younger Cicada did more in few episodes than mirror princess did in 2 seasons.
I think Cicada was one of the most wasted potential for a villain since he started off REALLY strong and intimidating with just murdering people. And his ability to cancel powers wouldve been really interesting as Barry had grown reliant on his powers. But they just completely threw it away by having Caitlyn be immune and just make him useless so Barry could beat him up.
If they had it so Barry had to be smart, use planning, and maybe take fighting lessons from Oliver, it couldve been amazing, but they didnt.
Also shouldve let my guy murder more people that was fun to watch

@@apoorvanand9627 i like his direction, the backstory scene of Gracie getting hit was heart breaking, so why not just combine the two, start a cult of people that are tired of living in fear of metas and want them gone. Have Barry have to deal with his own city turning against him and having to potentially fight just regular people
Facts and when the guy making this vid said changing his name made no sense made me angry , since the reason why Cicada was Orlin Dwyer was because Nora punched the satellite with Barry .
I would say the opposite. The character had no potential, due to the nature of his powers. In any conflict, there's only two reasonable options:
1. Cicada takes everyone's powers and murders them all. (Way too overpowered)
2. Cicada looses his dagger and cannot possibly win against team flash without it. (Way too underpowered)
Either of those wouldn't make for a full season villain, so instead every conflict was just interrupted by the winning side making some stupid mistake and letting the loser get away. There was no good way they could have written this. All of the previous villains were powerful, but had actual reasons for not just killing Barry.
Grace as Cicada 2 would have been a much better season villain, as she didn't need to rely on a ridiculously overpowered dagger to pose a threat. Her motivation for being a killer also works better than Orlin. He's just upset and wants to lash out, but she is a child growing up her whole life believing metas are evil, and even kills her father for accepting them!

Also no way does Grace have a better motivation than Orlin, Orlin lost everything to meta humans, and then lost Grace, but for Grace's timeline she was just salty and angry, yes she lost her parents but she still had Orlin
i have to say that i think matt worked best on legends of tomorrow he is such a menace there lord. kills people and is actually kinda scary but also have some good moments of humanity such as when he talks with ray in the space pod. i think it was pretty stupid to keep tom as reverse flash after season 1 tbh i makes zero sense execept when barry time travels back.

The zoom plot twist was perfect because comic book shows are usually limited by the fact that they usually follow the source material so making a twist that was completely new while still following the main comic source material

They did explain why orlin is cicada. Thawne had nora help barry with the satellite because he somehow knew it would make a new cicada so they could beat him. David hersch is cicada in every other universe as sherlouque says.

Season 1 was the greatest season and one of the best in all TV Shows I have ever watched. Season 1 Thawne was def the best villain on the show for me

Man, the amount of rose color glasses with savitar is insane. At the time I remember people calling it was an alternate barry really early on, the reveal dragged on too much and nobody liked it because of how obvious it was while feeling it was smart. But hey, later flash seasons do that to you I guess
Arrowverse Zoom is insanely awesome and underrated, and I genuinely think that should be the go to version of the character from here on out. Comics and otherwise.
Hot take but Matt Letscher is a better reverse flash than Tom not just because Tom was overused but because the rivalry between Barry and him is truly felt anytime he’s on screen and also the way he portrays thawne feels more natural than anything Tom did after S1
Finding out just now Tony Todd was zooms voice blew me away. I swear I normally pay attention to credits but my gosh did he kills it as always.
I think that the show should've ended at season 8, with the final battle between Flash and Reverse-Flash, which would also be the final battle between the positive and negative Speed Forces. It was a great climactic moment that would've bookended the show with Thawne being the villain of the first and last seasons. But instead we got Cobalt Blue.
Yeah, season 9 seams smaller compared to season 8.
What makes season 1 reverse flash so good, is the fact that no matter what Barry does, he loses. It makes you kinda feel bad for him, and helps him develop as a character.
Cicada, is by far, the worst. A guy who can literally be shot with a normal gun(no healing, super durability or superspeed) poses a threat for the whole season. All they needed to do is Barry bringing Joe to Cicada, Joe shooting him - bam. And him being able to fly wouldn't help - bullets are faster.

Yeah the potential was there, it was just the filler, motivation, and the season as a whole that was off. If anyone else directed CW they could've made it work.
I personally disliked Mirror Monarch and her whole arc as a whole, like with the speed forces as villains.
She had no rivalry with flash

Good points, but not every villain needs to have beef with Barry. The secondary characters also exist in the show and a villain focused on them can work.
Genuinely every time Tom Cavanagh appeared as Reverse Flash after season 1 (except the flashback episodes) it made me so mad, because it made no sense, that and, including Legends of Tomorrow, Eobard Thawne is killed on like 4 separate occasions. Matt proved that he could play Eobard perfectly on multiple occasions and it was so sad to see them not using him so many times.
Zoom is my favourite Villain of the series I liked how creepy and quite scary he was in the show.

The thing that killed it for me atleast is that they milked the show and the showdown of barry and thawne so much to the point where im not even exicted to see how it ends... you almost forget all the pain that thawne inflicted to barry and the team where it doesnt feel as impactful because that was many seasons ago. Its just them holding a grudge on eachother or atleast thats what it feels like

Zoom should have been as much a recurring villain as reverse flash for 2 reasons
1 zoom and reverse flash are technically the same supervillain alias worn by both thawne and zolomon with the same yellow costume.
2 Zolomon also kiilled Barry's Dad which makes his grudge with Barry almost as personal as Thawne killing his mom.
Honestly the structure of series villain could of been a bit stronger cause here’s how I would change a few elements

Really good list man but I will say Tom Cavanagh has always been doing incredible acting in my opinion
Matt Letscher was great as Thawne and could be one of the best main villains on the show, but I disagree with you that he could surpass Tom Cavanagh’s Thawne, because of the mystery behind it all back in S1 was really well executed. "Wells-Thawne" got in a weird way creepier and creepier throughout the season and I don’t think Matt Letscher could ever replace that feeling if mystery and eerieness, and while he Matt was a great Thawne, Tom’s performance in S1 is unmatched.
Something I have learned over the course of the the Eric Wallace era is he goes by this philosophy. "We'll give you what you want.
but we don't have to make it good"

We can all agree with most of if not all of Eric Wallace villains that if they had more then 4 episodes to develop they could've become a lot better.
I've been believing for years that Bloodwork was a leftover idea. I cannot believe that Wallace came up with his storyline.
Cavanagh as Reverse Flash actually makes sense as when Thawne took Wells’ body was proof of his pure evil (and also people wouldn’t know he was Thawne, thus protecting himself)

So here’s the deal 19 villains just seems to much for me so I decided to only put the villains that were established from the beginning to be the big bads and not all the ones who were arguably unnecessary which 3 of them were the Reverse Flash
You can disagree and argue but it won’t change my mind
1-4 are the good villains, 5-8 are the decent villains and 9-15 are the bad villains just for more specificity
Cobalt blue was DEFINITELY better than mirror Monarch. I get that they screwed up by not giving him enough time and I would agree that he would be way higher if they gave him more time.
But mirror monarch also had some weird pacing issues (granted that’s due to COVID)
I would also take cobalt blue over cicada, I mean there wasn’t really anything there for cicada.
I definitely see why you’d put deathstorm over him but I don’t know if I would agree I would say cobalt blue and deathstorm are about equal.

Yeah I haven't seen Batwoman like at all, Legends of tomorrow s5-7, most of Supergirl S5, Black Lightning S4... I don't intend to rank the seasons of the Arrowverse to each other ever again but I will make a video ranking every season of The Flash, in fact it's my next video.

I disagree on Savitar. To me, he's one of the most poorly written villains in the entire Arrowverse. His entire backstory revolves around Team Flash shunning him, which is complete character assassination as I'm sure Team Flash wouldn't shut him out because he's a time remanent of Barry. I found his goals throughout the season to be very inconsistent. There are moments when it seems like he's set sights on killing Barry in the first half of the season, but his grand plan is to make him suffer by killing Iris. Then there's him wanting Tracy Brand dead, but later decides to use her speed force bazooka as the key to his plans. He doesn't seem to make up his mind. Also now that I'm thinking back, Savitar's pretty incompetent as a villain. He sends Frost to do errands against Team Flash when there's no reason he can just get the job done more efficiently himself. This plays in to how HR of all people saved Iris and foiled Savitar's endgame. So it makes Savitar a complete idiot.
So people need to act like robots and can't change their minds now? Be serious
He had to change his plans because of team flash meddling and he sent killer frost because he thought she’d get the job done and meanwhile he was upgrading and fixing his suit and trying to think of new ways to beat team flash

@@sathi9774 I don’t think you get my point. There are moments when Savitar can get something done without even having to deal with team Flash at all. One example is in episode 20, he didn’t need to send Frost to kill Tracy Brand when she was working in her science lab or whatever. He could’ve just located Brand, speed run in and kill her before Barry, Cisco and HR could get there in time. Another example is when HR freed Iris in Savitar s lair, Savitar had the chance to catch them in a second. But he just sends Frost, which wasted valuable time and gave HR the opening to save Iris. Also it’s not properly shown on screen why Savitar can’t run without his suit. You say he needs to upgrade it, but he doesn’t seem to concerned about wearing it whenever the plot allows it.
@@theflashdcuniverse What I mean is his goal is to kill Iris to make Barry suffer, but his actions in the first half of the season contradicts that since he sends the Rival to kill Barry and he tries to kill both Barry and Wally in episode 9. Also if his way to become a god was to use Tracy Brand’s speed bazooka, then that would mean he would’ve doomed his plan if Frost actually did kill Brand earlier. This is what I mean that his plans are so inconsistent.
I think maybe they could have made red death better if he was like bloodwork but Reverse flash before he helped Barry against Godspeed and he was just negative speed force went into bloodwork and he became red death with Reverse flash helping him in his mind so he has all of reverse flash knowledge of how to use the negative speed force kind of like firestorm with Jefferson and Martin but blood work is like Jefferson and reverse flash is like martin
Javicia is great as earth prime Batwoman. I just think Red Death just wasn’t the role for her
Exactly I didn't mind the change but I think they should have gone with Wallis Day as Kate Kane because she can actually pull off an unhinged villain
I’ll give the actor who plays August Heart Godspeed credit. He hams it up with his performance perfectly. Both physically and when he’s doing the filtered voice. It’s like he knows this whole thing is ridiculous, so he might as well have fun with it.
original cicada isnt David but Orlin because of the changes in the timeline when XS helping Barry punch the satellite

Thawne’s always at his best when he’s being absolutely petty.
Also, I think Savitar’s suit looks better when it’s CGI than when it’s practical.
I'm rather pleased with how high you placed Bloodwork. Love him in the comics, loved him in the series. I mean, who can argue against Flash vs zombies?

Neil Sandilands had a really good performance but the body swapping got repetitive overtime

He's pretty underrated, I like the concept of a meta-human Jack the ripper but when he got swapped for another Cicada he was ruined for me

I liked him in season 6 but he had wasted potential in the other seasons

Some parts of her were interesting but she had the worst defeat on the show and it didn't help that her story was dragged out

I like her as a character but the idea of her being a villain felt so over the top like if you went back in time before season 7 and told me that the Speedforce was gonna be a main villain I would say that you know nothing about The Flash, also her dialogue was cringe af

She was the worst villain on the show, her acting was garbage, her motivation barely made any sense and SHE NEVER KILLED ANYBODY, "Cicada killed more people than the Red death" well that aged well...
I don't really consider the negative forces as main villains because they were just filling in why Reverse Flash and Cobalt blue were the main villains of their arcs

@@Eagle-fl4ck Deathstorm's voice was scary and the way he possessed people was scary too, also the fact that he's a demon far from Hell is another thing that makes him scary and interesting, yes Zoom was scary too but I think Deathstorm's existence is more disturbing

@@MaximumPrime tbh I didn't really see flaws with Cobalt blue himself but I can understand some of the criticism, I would think that they're kinda equal but in season 3 Savitar had no flaws and I would've put him higher if he had more screentime in season 9 and wasn't easily defeated

Honestly what gets me when I see the later seasons is that the costumes just get more and more restrictive? Like, you can see in the way the actors move, they don’t have the largest range of motion in those costumes, which makes their movements look so robotic and a little bit like a tokusetsu show, but without the fun. Or the physical acting.
