Hey! Now you can download some of the sounds I selected and messed around with in this video. Continue here: drive.google.com/file/d/1SgGOJX9is75cv9BJFhzDAbmOHFpCF3bg/view?usp=sharing
@@SilasJohnEgan Hey, not sure about MidiOx and handling sysex with the synth I am afraid. With the patchbase, it worked in a peculiar way too. I pretty much had to sacrifice one of the patches every time (lets say 01) and that worked as a slot for the sound to be sent to. That means one patch at the time, if I liked it, I then could save it somewhere else. Then another would go to the 01 and so on. That is of course bit of a hassle, but since I had all of the sounds on my iPad, I rarely would save it directly in the synth itself. Maybe there is a more convinient way
sorta. they both sound good honestly. M6 has a lot of tonal dead spots in my experience. all the patches in this video sound superb, but he’s using quite a lot of processing to sweeten the tone and it shows. either way it’s a super good example of how nice a matrix 6 CAN sound in the right hands.
Really incredible synth. It can do it all and more. But to me? A synth isn't great unless it can do that great classic "synth" sound....Like a Les Paul through a Marshall. And the Matrix 6 can NAIL that classic sound...AWESOME filters too! The M6 is kind of the "If I could only have one" synth choice.
Man, you're a genius. This is my favourite synthesizer and I search for inspirations like this from time to time. The more I play with it the more it feels like I've only scratched the surface. I would never have thought of using the headphone output as a second output for wet/dry goodness. I recently did a similiar thing by splitting the signal with a stereo loop pedal, and recording both the dry and the flanged/delayed/overdriven signal. Analog effects and a bit of saturation can really enhance its character. This way seems lots more convenient. Did you know that you could play it in mono mode by using an external keyboard and selecting MIDI mode ON in the master edit section? I got some really juicy lead sounds as well out of it (not so much on the unison mode which I'm not quite fond of), which I sometimes prefer over an actual mono synth I own, the Behringer Pro-1. There's something about the creamy filter and the oscillators that I can't quite match.
Thanks for the kind words! There is really nothing too genius about it hah. I've got the pedal some time ago as the EHX valve line is possibly the only reasonably priced, since all the pedals are real, full voltage valve designs and not the starved gimmicky type ones. I just wanted a poor man's Culture Vulture really. I went through some different tubes and found the one combination I like the most. It sounded good just like that but sometimes, I wanted the original character of the synth to be present too, because this pedal has kind of a tone/eq mixer and works best with the highs completely cut, saturating the low-mid only, so I thought hey, I might as well use it with headphone output and get the best of both worlds! It sort of cancels out if you don't treat one of the signals a bit, as those are technically identical, albeit the pedal processing. So I just fooled around with effects and found out that the Microshift is perfect for that. Currently, I am also trying to get my hands on some of the Boss BX line mixers. Definitely check them out too, they have some juicy character when overdriven. Apparently, those were iconic in the early 90s. This way I could have the pedal as a send, adjusting the saturation with a dry-wet knob instead of this whole route of two outputs + the extra character of the mixer itself. Sometimes it is a bit annoying as I have to mix the inputs manually on the interface or inside the DAW. Regarding the Obie, oh yes. I love it. It has this almost instant, nostalgic character I have never managed to get from anything else. I dig it, especially in the lower regions. But boy it is complex. Could not imagine programming stuff like the ramp/tracking generators or the matrix slots from the hood like that. The Patchbase app is a godsend for this. I actually found about the mono MIDI trick you mentioned not long time ago and even managed to get some unison sounds that I like a lot, the Patchbase has unison detune, so it is not this weird sterile lump of voices. We can share some patches or something if you want, I managed to build some very cool sounds but also loads of demented noises :D I think this synth is a life-long exploration.
@@UnikatesProduction Unison detune?? Really? I wish I had an iPad... I didn't know you could detune the voices in unison mode with an external controller, that's a game changer! Yes it's complex but I like using the matrix mod, mostly for special expressiveness, like assigning weird stuff to the levers the pedals and aftertouch. But it doesn't need all that to sound great. In fact your sounds are pretty good! Yeah I'd like to share patches, unfortunately I recently lost all of mine except a few ones I dumped on my computer... Oh I almost forgot, how does your keyboard respond to velocity? I think mine is somewhat broken, it doesn't go past 100 velocity. But if I use and external keyboard, I get up to 127. I don't know if it's a firmware problem or if it's supposed to be like this.
@@FabioCuccuMusic Mine really responds nicely I would say. I only used Keystep as the external controller in the past and I can't really tell the difference, the keystep keybed is quite meh. It might be also related to the way the synth is set up, I really did not mess with it since I got it last year and it was already set up by the previous owner, who also took it to refurbishing before. Needles to say, the whole way the synth works regarding to the input amounts is rather strange, like the effect curve is quite skewed and non-linear for example in the matrix, it wont really show a difference until you are somewhere around 50 of 63, lets say in the cutoff. But that is just a quirk of the whole thing. Yeah the detune is nice, I belive it can be achieved in some desktop apps too, never really bothered with those tho, I had the ipad before the Matrix, it was one of the reasons I got it. I also replaced the firmware eprom for the 2.15 from the untergeek.de website. This might be related, the guy tweaked the code alot to make the synth be better usable with MIDI and stuff. I can upload a small bunch (got like 1000+ presets, I downloaded all availible matrix 1000/6 off the net and tweaked loads of them) and include some of the unison patches I like and you can have some fun with those
Hey, I guess that could be done. I have this selection of patches that I narrowed from many other banks, edited, and sorted in category folders on my IPad. So I have Brass, Bass, Pads folders, etc. Most of the sounds in this vid are in the selection. In the patch base, you can just load single sounds like that. Therefore I am not sure if I will be able to send it as a single bank, but I can upload it anyways, and maybe you will manage somehow to convert it into a single file
Just picked up one of these for cheap to repair. Any advice for implementing software for this unit? Are you able to control parameters via iPad? Or is that just for banks etc?
If there was a tactile UI, true stereo output and better parameter scaling, then quite possibly yes. It has a very very unique sound that I did not find in anything else since.
Hi the synth needs to be connected to audio interface with midi i/o in some way (cables, bluetooth). You also need software for wireless midi protocol. I use rtpMIDI on Windows, utilizing my home network. You set up a session and connect to it with the iPad. It pretty much pops in automatically in the visible devices list as long as you are on the same WIFI and you are running an app that utilizes MIDI on the iPad, just like Patchbase in this video

i just got one, thx for sharing the patches!
Thank you so much for sharing.
Hey this is awesome! I'm using MidiOX to load to my matrix 6 but the patches don't change when I send the sysex file. Any recommendations?

@@UnikatesProduction Thanks! Yeah I actually just figured it out. Just wasn't behaving as expected. I appreciate you getting back so quick.
That tame Impala "Nangs" inspired patch at 1:15 is incredible!! nice work
Lol I found out about this synth because of Tame Impala
@Frigus Oh is it? thanks for the info but I meant to say is that Kevin uses this synthesizer in his songs :D
Thanks. I did not notice the similarity until now but you are right! I believe they use the M1000
I had a Matrix 6 back in the 90's. I loved it.
What happened to your M6, it broke?
Everybody chases those dull sounding Juno's 106/60/6 while the M6/1000 sounds way fatter. LOL

Dirty sounds man I like it
That's amazing demo 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
New sub here. SynthPunk sent me. Great video.. Looking forward to more content.
huge underdog goes out to the EHX.. makes the M6 sound so good!
Beautiful

Superb programming. Matrix 6 rules! Have you tried putting synth in midi mono mode? Sounds huge as a mono synth too. Works better than unison mode.
