Denim and leather brought us all together
Good old Saxon.
Txtspeak then get a leather jacket my dude
It was you that set the spirit free!
Lol
Fucking Saxon !!!
As a punk I'm happy that you guys recognize the influences that our culture had on yours. I know of a lot of metalheads who try to distance themselves from punk as much as possible and completely ignore the influence it had on metal.
I'm more of the metal guy, but I DO like Post-Hardcore : ) (Underøath f.e.)
toni erspamer I love both genres equally I like alot of diferent types of music
toni erspamer No way dude Punks are the older brother of Metalheads
I got into metal Through Punk and Hardcore punk. It was just a logical next step for me.
toni erspamer Form me its its just rock n roll.
Problem with metal as a whole is that a high number of the fanbase see it as a competition to one up other metalheads. I've said it many times, but metalheads are the nicest people in the world, however, they are the biggest arseholes in the world too.
That’s way too true
To be fair... There are wankers in every subgroup of society, i don't see it as a problem specific to metal, just goes to show that you really gotta pick your humans carefully
100% Facts
The second you said full time whiskey enthusiast I knew you guys were talking about Lemmy!
Lemmy tried to get in my pantz back in 1982 ..... thankfully this punk chickie knows how to fend off a drunk singer..... and..... Philthy Phil Animal Taylor ♥ could see I wasn't havin it and he said to Lemmy...... she don't wanna fuck around with you ...she wants to smoke this with me! And he was right ☺stoners unite!
To me, a battle jacket is like a diary on denim.
I got 2. The first one has seen its first show in 1984. (Metallica)
The second one was baptized with Motörhead in 2009.
I dont know why I laughed so hard at "everyones favorite gay man, Rob Halford"
did you know that the name ROCKER actually came from the name of the engine that was widley fitted in vast majority of the motorbikes at the time.
Andrew666 makes sense
METAL CRUSADER oo
Metal Crusader is right here the term Rocker predates Steppen Wolf, and comes from how riders on 1950's and early 60's pre-unit British bikes had to reset the valve gear every couple of hundred miles and tighten everything back up because the bastards like to vibrate themselves apart, (I'm told the vibrations are fun for the missus- buts thats a different story) which is why all bikers at the time carried a rocker tools (feeler gauges) in their tool bags.
I still do if I'm out on my 1956 BSA A7 Shooting Star.
@@tonybmw5785 girls still like riding for that reason... they probably like my 16000 rpm a little more than the 40 hp you're talking about
I'm doing a pretty interesting project (well I think its interesting at least..) so I'm turning my dads old m60 jacket (the official military uniform jacket in Sweden around the 60´s to 1990..) into a battle jacket! I'm keeping the sleeves on tough cause its still a piece of history...
Take pics pls
Sounds like the m59. It was the universal combat uniform prior to the m90 in all land combat units. There were variations on the m59 - like one version had heavy duty zippers (similar the m90) instead of buttons - is that the one?
Would like to see what you come up with, anyway.
holy shit I love you guys so much
I love you so much
Here in Finland we cut off ears in moshpits and put them on our battle vests. 🔪👂
What a norwegian thing to do.
That's so brütal
Y'all's countries are hot messes lol
@@YearsOVDecay1 no i'm not familiar with that, guess i'm a moron.
How many ears do you own??? And how many are homegrown???
Used to see people in battle jackets and punk styled everything in Malaysia, I was 5 years old back then until 2 years later, the style just went away in a blink of an eye. Wish I could see that style back again though so I wouldn't feel alone as a Malaysian metalhead
My battle vest is over thirty years old. I still love it and wear it on occasion. It's the reason I learned to sew.
Glad to see you brought Zakk Wlyde to the show.
Literallyy
Awesome video guys, nice to see my picture of my cat in his battle vest :D
+Baza seriously?! That's your cat??
Yes it is, I uploaded it to tumblr (@bazaton) Frank is a badass cat!
I love that photo of your cat wearing his battle vest.
Lemmy is the godfather of all good musical genres
Percy Barbarossa sabbath
Brilliant video, guys. As a teen I had a flimsy fake leather jacket with all my favourite punk and metal bands on it. Got pretty beat up. Found my patches recently, so I'm starting my patch collection up again.
Going with the sleeved denim though - don't feel right wearing vests. I don't see too many people wearing sleeved denim with patches though, probably because it gets so hot at gigs, but - more room for patches ;)
I have 6 unique Battle Jackets. My prototype is a hooded sweater, my denim vest, my military jacket, my sweater vest, my sleeveless suit jacket, and my suit jacket. Soon I’ll be starting number 6 my Mexican poncho. This video was awesome thank you for making it.
Love this video! Short concise and great imagery! I own like 3-5 denim vests and just started working on my first DIY battle vest today. Cut the sleeves off myself and painted my logo on the back! Looking forward to adding studs, spikes, buttons, and patches! Cheers to my fellow punks and metal lovers!
I'm working on a battle jacket right now covered with black metal and crust punk patches. Once my Mayhem patch arrives it will be completely full. \m/
Anarcho Death Ponx nice man! \m/
No piss on it throw it in the mud and wear it
Hey i know you
the way he giggled in the beginning made me curl over laughing
Battle vest is way of life \m/
Lemmy in those fucking cutoff denim shorts. That's what I call heavy mother fucking metal.
Great video! The history is rich in also showing how much the correlation occurred between punk and metal despite some odd rivalries that occurred in history, we still stand strong together!
still got mine 50 years old going strong
And me 52 i am .. lol
50!? That must be some old school tough denim. Mine ripped in the pit. I have a sleeved jacket with patches now.
Oh, wait. You said you're 50. Never mind.
I remember band patches on jackets before 78
Everything metal goes back to Lemmy, it’s insane!! Fuckin legend
First battle vest I ever put together had a Slayer live undead center patch then Metallica upper in blue. Small Venom patch on the right upper pocket and a shit load of pins.
This was 1987. ")
Hail Metal until I die
I found a battle vest around the year 2001 in Rotterdam. It says it belongs to Fritz. So Fritz if you l read this I still have you denim metal jacked with all the patches on em.
I have my battle jacket for when it’s chilly and then my battle fest when it’s hot
if I see someone with a Death patch they are instantly my friend
You'll like me, my vest and this video then: ruclips.net/video/bop9RIKlnD8/видео.html :)

great video guys
I'm literally the only metalhead in my school and I'll wear my battle jacket full of patches with pentagrams and slayer and murder and I get there strangest looks 😂😂 hmmm wonder why?
Josh skates You really shouldn't wear a battlevest anywhere
@MorbidAiden i feel ya man xD
@@lhsailo get a Marduk "fuck me jesus" patch and watch their heads explode. 😄
@MorbidAiden my parents are starting to not care about me listening but if i get a single shirt with a skull, i'll be more dead than the skull
Metal_Reks_You why
Yall need to collaborate with killbot and gore gore
😂 you mean gore boar?
What about Millbot? and Bart McCreul.
So I couldn't have a battle jacket at school but I customized my backpack. I decorated it with spikes and things from my belt. I also put a old nes controller on it. I stood out but people were scared to talk to me.
Why couldn't you have a battle jacket at school? I would honestly like to know to see if you could bring it to the school board and get it changed
One more thing we owe to Lemmy.
In H.S my "battle vest" had the cover of Bonded By Blood painted on the back...I couldn't walk around in peace...now this is in The Bronx, NYC in the mid-late 80's so you can imagine...and I'm African American so that made it triple👀...in 97' when Exodus played in NYC at CBGB's I got them to sign it Paul was back by then..
Nice! You still have the vest? i'm sure that would be something cherished by Exodus fans, especially since Baloff passed. For me it was the early 90s but i was an African kid in NYC with the battle jacket in high school too! There were some fun times at CBs, L'amour(s), The Ritz, Wetlands, Continental, etc.
Holy sh*t! At 0:46 the guy in the middle of the bottom row has The Dull Tool on the back of his bomber jacket. My grandfather John Bianco was the tailgunner on that plane. It was was a B-17. The Army Aircore made them change the name from the Dull Tool, because they said the name was a sexual refferance. Maybe thats why he's the only one with the Dull Tool on his back and all the others said the Disciples, he just hadnt updated his jacket yet. Wow, my heart dropped when I saw that photo. Cheers, and where the hell did you guys get that photo from? I had the only photo of my grandpop Bianco standing next to the Dull Tool, but have since lost that photo.
I'd love to be able to tell you where we found that photo but we made this video probably like 2 years ago now and I honestly can't remember, would likely have been a Google image search at the time
First i've heard of it being called a battle vest...
was gonna ask if its a European thing...
I've called mine a battle vest a few times. My circle usually refers to it as 'armor' though.
What name you normally call it?
@@PoraoDoBrazilian cut off and was traditionally worn over the leather bike jacket.
I sense an atmosphere that says...."You're not welcome here".
Although I'm guilty of my vest being bought (awhile ago) as a band specific vest with pre-sewed back patch & small front patch, I recently got my final patch delivered, and plan on sewing all the patches I bought myself onto it (a VERY good starting point imo). I got a variety of metal bands (Ex: Godflesh, Gojira, Fear Factory, etc.), but I also included a couple rock bands. \m/
My first Metal vest btw
I'm getting my patches sewn on by a professional. I've picked them out and carefully placed them with safety pins. If I could find a vest with a backpatch and small front patch of a band I like, that would save some money and effort for starting one.
Can't wait to make mine and wear it as part of a suit so I can confuse everyone
Did you?
Greetings fans from Kulai Johor Malaysia.
I want a battle jacket now
I need to make one
Love punk and metal.
Found my friend at 4:08 😂
Greatest picture of Lemmy (the first one)😂
You should do a cookery show.
44 years old now. Been listening metal since I was 13. I honestly can say that I have never been attracted to the vest. Its just not my thing. It kind of looks dorky. Sorry, that's my opinion.
Haha yeah I’m 33 listening since 13 too. Always looked cheesy in my opinion. I got no problem with it but it always looked funny.
My battle vest consists of metal thrash black and death and punk my back patch is caustic Christ
denim and leather is all we need
Great video guys!
Summed up in one word
LEMMY!
Yup
Don't forget the 80's & 90's man! Without death metal and black metal taking shape, we wouldn't have brutal battle jackets!
I ain't a metalhead anymore but I have a black denim vest and I'm considering putting a backpatch with "the dark side of the moon"
Hopefully the elitists won't eat my flesh or smth
Did you put the backpatch on your jacket? Don't worry about the elitists, your jacket is about you and what you love. As long as you are authentic and true to yourself that is all that matters.
Rip lemmy
I always thought they were heavy metal denim jackets that had the sleeves cut off. I remember in the 80's and 90s seeing them pretty much studded out, spiked out, patches and had the big patch of your fav bank in the middle of the back. There ads in the mags back then that sold that patch that would fit exactly in there.
Full time whisky enthusiast and part time bassist...Lemmy BWAHAHAAA
i lost my shit on that, bloody hilarious. I've subscribed on that lie alone :'D
The patched up embroidered cut off denim or leather was around in the late 70's and early 80's, because I had one, admittedly mine was more influenced by 'biker' culture rather than metal but I was a baby biker with a moped (and later real bikes) at the time, who was in to heavy rock and metal, rather than a metal head/rocker who got into bikes. So as well as band patches (I still have a Rush and Maiden in England patches on my current leather cut off) mine in 1979/80 also included Motorcycle Action Group, rally & TT races badges and bike manufacturer patches.
Sick video guys and what do u think of the mods
Metal Heads they have a fetish on mirrors
I rode a modern Vespa S-150, I had it decked out with RAF roundels. I also rocked a M-65 parka with a wolf-fur trim hood from a M-51 with mod RAF roundel and Vespa patch. Mostly I wore a denim vest with a large Vespa logo patch on the back, and I found a matching colored one for the front pocket. I broke too many bones and had to quit. Never got into Northern Soul much, just listened to Quadrophrenia.
I need me a good battle jacket
Who would win in a fight Lemmy or God?
Trick question lemmy is god
Lemmy can't win against himself
Lemmy is god
FUCK YEAH LENNIE! FUCKNG \M/

Not sure if you got the joke but LeMMY sure was a hell of a musician
TheRubenator FUCK YEAH LENNIE!!!!
+Grand Mapussydestoryer666 Yeah - Love Lennie's singing in Ace of Clubs
I wore one when I met James hetfield years ago n he liked it
2:58 Check out that pose bottom right. LOL
Awesome video! I love the History Lesson!
I believe at least from both Halfords & K.K Drownings books it was K.K who brought the leather & studs to Judas priest and this till Heavy metal and Extreme music at large.
When I wore mine as a 13 year old kid back in the early 80's I got abuse from strangers regularly. I didn't give a monkey's fart.
You mentioned the WW2 Pilots ...... I just feel the need to mention The Hells Angels were established in 1948 in Fontana California by Otto Freidli however it still stays a mystery of the actual story of how the club came about. Motorcycles at the time were cheap after the war as surplus and as more and more veterans returned they were recruited by promises of a becoming part of a group of drinking and cursing bikers. the rest as they say is history, Rgds "H"
I am getting my first Vest to make my first battle vest
Good video. Punk here. Thanks!
I miss mine it had pins and patches. It was well lived in.
What happened to it?
That thumbnail brought me here XD
3:44 Also Lemmy invented Thrash...
3:19 is False imo. Rob simply jumped on the Coattails of KISSs idea from their earlier years. KISS brought the Black n Leather with big studs & spikes the the mainstream gloabally, Not Halford Or Priest. In 1974 KISS were known for their leatehrs & studs, Look at Hotter than Hell album Cover 1974 , same with 1975, same with 1976 ... and in 1976 Preist just packed way their flashy phychodelic hippy garb in exchange for a more aggressive harder look. Kiss put Preist on the map bringing them out on their first Tour in the US ... Lota people Hated Kiss, while many more liked them .... regardless lets not ignore the facts of just how influential they were & how big of an Impact they had on the tons of bands in the 80s to come around, from WASP to Maiden to Lizzy Borden to Slayer to Metallica to Overkill & Anthrax & Pantera etc etc etc ....just tons more. imo
@Corey Stokely apperently you have it backwards. 1974 KISS was black & leather & studs. Hotter than hell album cover.Look at Alive ,Massive selling album from 1975 ,huuge album, theres the proof, what did Preist have..... a soda bottle cover & They wear almost hippy style clothes chifon with a Hat & long flowing tiedie ,.. 76 KISS Destroyer all in leather & studs ,another Massive selling album What did Priest have ...... a concrete building? They Tour with KISS from Feb 79 thru most of the year giving them some Big exposure. Then around 1979 at some point Preist gets a beefier more leathered up look. So I think this flips it back over to you cuz I made mt point.
@@97warlock it all looks a bit spandexy to me.
@@martinmcfred6758 KISS used real leather back in the day, but i think around 76ish used more lblack latex-ish ,lighter material under the costume pieces i think. so yeh I believe by the late 70s early 80s nobody was foolish enough to play metal wearing heavy leather
A nice educational vid for newcomers
Just found your channel! Very impressed! 👍❤
Battle vest? - BOLLOCKS - it was never EVER called that until recently. They were just called cut offs.
Welcome to the age of metal
@@Cretaal No welcome required since I have been listening to metal since 1980.
Let me rephrase: get with the times. Unless you have an apple shaped butt and long blond hair, nobody wants to imagine you in cut offs. I'm laughing when I imagine the audience that these metal heads would bring in talking about the history of cut-offs.
Battle Vest is a significant upgrade that refers to the cultural history of the style, cut off is just a lazy placeholder that shouldn't have been expected to stick. I can apply the term to booty shorts with the pocket hanging out or to shirts and coats cut off below the sleeves, or really anything I cut short. There's no reason to attach yourself to such a half assed term aside from being a hipster who got themselves stuck in the past. There's definitely no reason to get that heated over the term changing after so long. It's not a vague bit of underground wear anymore, you're going to have to deal with that.
It's a new age of new metal heads and we're not pinning Amon Amarth patches on our daisy dukes, so we call it a Battle Vest to give the item a bit more dignity and cultural weight and significance since it has been evolving longer than the 80's you seem to be stuck in.
A cutt, not cut off.
@@janetgreenslade6478 'Cut off' if you are UK Northern.
Cool bit-o-Info, thanks for the upload!
Lemmy is GOD!
Praise Lemmy.
Only a man like Lemmy could get away with wearing Daisy Dukes.
RIP Lenny
I like to add that you, if you take your rockerdom seriously, are only supposed add pins and patches of bikes you have actually ridden and places you have actually been to (on your bike of course). Only those who cracked the ton (100mph) on a motorbike are entitled to wear the white silk scarf.
iv seen that passed out guy at the end of the video at bloodstock a few times aha :L
I will never forget my battle trouser... RIP...

Hell's angels wore denim jackets with patches in the sixties.
All motorcycle clubs wear patches displaying their colours. And its disrespectful to name drop a club like that
@@janetgreenslade6478 disrespectful to who?

@@ElectronicYouth its disrespectful to the mc to name drop them publicly.
@@janetgreenslade6478 lol are you fucking kidding me? I don't know if you know this but Hell's Angels were a cultural icon in the sixties and seventies. There were countless movies, articles and books made about them back then. Hell, Hunter S Thompson wrote a book about them. Those guys were security at the Woodstock. They also refused to wear leather cuts, instead they wore denim jackets with patches and pins all over. Considering their wild popularity in the 60s and 70s I would say they are more than anyone responsible for the creation of the battle vest.
It became a must-wear attire with the rise of NWOBHM. Every metal head was wearing one
