The important part of Doom 3 in my opinion is that it touched upon alot more on man-made horror and it was one of the few things I noticed about Doom 2016. Doom 2016 literally leans too much on demon gore and violence and doesn't touch enough upon the suffering and massacre that was done on humans. You literally hear tons of screams in Doom 3, human bodies strapped on the hell sections, etc., yet in Doom 2016, it's almost only just demons.
I still remember my shock by seeing Betruger's head cone out from the Madelic's mouth. Was so cool and creepy. I'm glad we get to take both out in Resurrection of Evil.
@@donaldduckdumbI always saw it as a punishment for his failure in the main game, considering he's screaming in pain as though he's being consumed. It's likely that the human part is dead by Resurrection of Evil and it is the demon itself that speaks using his head as its voice.

Doom 3’s flashlight mechanic is severely underrated. It really tied the game up as a horror game. I loved every second playing through this game. So much fun.
@@Eluderatnight it was a good game but that one issue made it hit or miss on how long pll played. Remember I fun fact from the time. The coding used for just one the door displays that were interactive w passes. Used the roughly same amount or storage bits an bytes as the entire original doom game combined. Appreciate that alone.
Its cause it was essentially just a showcase for (at the time) bleeding edge lighting technology so they designed the entire game around the lighting which nade it more horror action rather than doom-y quick shooter
Dr. Betruger is definitely not only my favorite Doom villain but my favorite video game villain. He’s basically demonic Emperor Palpatine. He doesn’t have some sympathetic backstory or any complex motivation, he’s just evil and revels in being evil. And he’s enough of a threat and has enough of a presence to still be intimidating as much as he’s entertaining.
I guess, but the thing is he is not _interesting._ He has no charisma, he doesn’t make sense. He sticks out like a sore thumb in the super gritty, grounded Doom 3.
@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged Doom 3 isn't super gritty, though, it's an old school B horror movie. It's that magical middle ground where the creators aren't taking it too seriously but the in-universe characters are. So Dr. Betruger being an over the top Paplaptine-esque ham is awesome. And his lack of any sympathetic backstory or motivation is also part of that same charm. He's just evil because he wants to be.
its all a matter of taste, but seriously? your favorite video game villain? dude is a cartoon character, with the depth of a puddle. he isnt even unique! being just another generic evil scientist who does evil and gets turned into a monster in the end. dude doesnt even have a satisfying death. like i said, its a preference thing, but i cant help but wholeheartly disagree.
The weird thing about the main villains of Doom 3 and 4 is that they should have been swapped. Betruger's cartoonish propensity for maniacal laughter and grandiose taunts fit the campy nature of the Doomslayer games, while Olivia Pierce's reserved demeanor and tragic nature as a manipulated pawn would gave fit 3's serious horror focus.
I actually agree. Betruger becoming the maledict as the final boss against the doomslayer would have been awesome and a better enemy to dish out with doomslayer’s arsenal. Olivia becoming the spider mastermind in doom 3 would have been right up in scale in the Maledict’s place.
Doom 2016 is, in many ways, a retelling of Doom 3. Evil scientist, preventing some facility from blowing up, being sucked int oa Hell portal, looking for an artifact weapon in Hell, fighting a reimagined Classic Doom boss, etc. etc. Many of the plot points are the same.
The Rip and Tear was still there, you just had to be a beast about it and it came suddenly. Even thought it was slower paced you still had to tear the room apart pretty regularly. A thing I always say when people talk about how dark the game was is "the plasma gun lit up the room just fine".
I don't think so. Doom 3 and even RoE were survival horrors. Game was dark as shit so I know you weren't running everywhere. Doom 3: The Lost Mission though? That was rip n tear.
Doom3 is one of games that need remaster and it doesn't need much work, just some optimization for modern systems and remake of character models as map design, lighting and story is one of best you can get. Just like Return to Castle Wolfenstain and STALKER, Doom3 is game that you can play every year and still get lots of fun as those games have amazing atmosphere and characters like Dr Betruger

DOOM³ is one of my favourite games, I didn't like it that much when it was released because it was much different than I expected, but I grew really fond of it and now I play through it once a year. Mostly in the christmas holidays.
The main reason I didnt like it when it released was because I couldnt see anything lol A few years later when I discovered a mod that put a flashlight onto every weapon, I started actually playing Doom3. And began liking it more and more after that.
My story is very similar. Having grown up with the Classic Dooms, I was skeptical of Doom 3 at first... but the game really grew on me later on. It earned my respect and today I consider it a misunderstood masterpiece.
There is a fan theory that the ancient Martians in Doom 3 were possibly an offworld branch of the Sentinels from Doom 2016, aka the Bethian tribe of Hebeth or another tribe like them. That among the worlds the Sentinels colonized in the early days included the universe of Doom 3 Mars, since their slipstream tech seems similar to teleportation. So based on teleportation allowing travel between dimensions in the Doom games, the ancient Martians of Doom 3 were from Argent D'Nur. It would even make sense that Doomguy used the Soul Cube when he was still a Sentinel. But he didn't die, but was trapped in Hell. But the Agrent D'Nur Martian survivors didn't know this so they created a tomb to honor him, even if it was empty before they escape to Doom 3 Earth and possibly other planets, dimensions or back to Argent D'Nur.
Minor error, but you said they became our decadents, when I'm pretty sure you meant to say ancestors or that WE became their decedents. Loved the video! Cant get enough of this channel
Picked this up when it came out and loved it. The story was pretty interestering, i liked the emails and datapads the told mini stories about the personell living at the station. Actually got quite a bit of replayability out of it, the co-op being one of the main reasons. Wasnt too big on the multiplayer though. When the scientist comes flailing out of the portal with the hellknight following close was such a cool scene.
Resurrection of Evil was lots of fun. Slightly less focused on horror and more on action. The abilities of the artifact were a fun mechanic and the new demons were nice additions, especially those fast imps that throw green fireballs and arrived in green flames instead of the orange ones; it always made me wonder if they came from a different part of hell.
I enjoy doom 3 alongside the other doom games. Turning ripping and tearing to survival horror and a different, human protagonist instead of doom guy, really made you feel the weight and atmosphere dealing with hell. It’s a lot more serious and terrifying. However, when you mentioned the game is more like resident evil, I do somewhat agree with you on the more survival horror aspect of Doom 3 being similar, but this game feels like if the movie “Event Horizon” was made into a game and the story had actual demons instead of tormented souls hallucinating.
Wow it's cool to see a summary of Doom like this. The incredibly fun shooting of Doom 1 + 2 translated into Doom 3 as a story. You made this very beautiful.
Also he probably has the best demon design out of the doom franchise Don't know why they seemingly didn't reuse the Maledict demon design in any other game
I love Doom 3. I know it wasn't like the other games but I loved the creepy atmosphere and the slow pace of it, it felt like a horror movie. It's easily one of my favorite all time games.
Holy shit I never thought Doom 3 would have such interesting lore. This adds so much to the atmosphere and how I think of the game. I might end up playing these again, just because of this video. Thank you.
So Betruger was so concerned with a lack of ethics of his employer that he made a pact with demons, killed his entire colony, then went to live in hell. He seems a bit confused lol.
honestly, i think DOOM 3 is better than the new DOOM. it was spooky af. new DOOM got boring quick. just non stop enemies in a room, clear the room, move on to other room with a butt ton of enemies. do that until end of game

No bro its not, design of marine in RoE is just ugly. Moveset of fight is low in that times you got painkiller the real classic doomstyle game. Doom 2016 is a lot better game gameplay allways is something more important then story.
Two things you didn't bring up: 1) Betruger (or rather Betrüger) is literally German for 'Deceiver'. 2) Malcolm Betruger and Ian McCormick - you didn't notice the reference to Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park? Also, I have *no idea* how you got the idea Doom 3 has the gameplay of Resident Evil - yes, it's more horror-focused than prior installments of the franchise, but the gameplay really doesn't bear any semblance to RE. No puzzle items, no backtracking and constant revisiting of places you've been, no resource management and definitely no ammo shortages - literally every single defining element of RE is missing in Doom 3.

I don't know about this... when it came out, it was id Software's best-selling game and it was pretty well-received as a whole. It brought a much-needed revival to the Doom community, which was showing signs of stagnation. The whole negativity towards this game only started later, around 2012/2013 or so. I suspect Brutal Doom and its fans had something to do with it. However, the game's fans endured and Doom 3 still has its place in 2023.
I remember seeing the BFG Edition in a game store and got it as my first ever Doom game as it also came with Doom 1 and Doom 2, without it I likely wouldn't have ever played Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal. So Doom 3 holds a special place in my life, regardless of it being different from the other Doom games.
I really liked this Doom despite the criticism. It’s the Doom where your Doomed where in the most recent Doom is like their Doomed. And lighting was great nightmare fuel.

I want a remake of doom 3. To me, it is the best doom out there. It not only had good graphics back in the day, but also the atmosphere was amazing, the story was a good one and it even gave the player a lot of interactivity with the computer screens (which the later dooms took away from the player). A shame, that we now have more of a "mario in Bowsers castle" -doom.
Wasn’t Dr. Ian Malcolm Jeff Goldblum’s character from Jurassic Park franchise? It’s been so long since I seen Jurassic Park & Jurassic World: Dominion that I forgot if that was the case or not. Great eye tho by the way! 🎯😉👍🏻💯
To answer the question if Bertruger was the villain or victim, there has to be option C: neither as he committed acts of evil believing he was doing the most good. He’s a cautionary tale of the ends justifying the means and not stopping to think about what you’re doing and question it. The worst evil is that which believes genuinely that it’s doing the most good.
Nah he's 100% the villain here even though the uac is just as much to blame, many of the actions of making a deal with the devil to getting his coworkers killed of or converted into hell units are 100% his fault and so he shares even more accountability for all those deaths since he was the one who unleashed the demons and actually got everyone killed in the first place.
@hardstyle905 he was probably a narcissist that was only using "for the greater good" as an excuse to seize power for him self, and probably didn't care about his other workers at all.
I started my umpteenth Doom 3 playthrough with the D3HDP mod. The vanilla version of the mod is the best Doom 3 campaign I've ever played. It took me back to the fun I had with the original game.
Doom 3 & it's DLC was actually the 1st Doom game, that I ever beat. I still have fond memories of it. It wow'd me, when your character The Marine is sucked into hell for the 1st time. I thought the Soul Cube was a great addition. And I liked how you didn't play the same Marine in the DLC.
Doom 3 is a DOOM game. The 1st 1/3 of the game focuses on survival horror like game play. With lots of zombie enemies, limited to no music, just the sounds of the facility in the background. Letting you know you are all alone. The silence also emphasize the loud screeching of an Imp from the shadows. Of which there are a lot. It is also the part of the game with the most supernatural phenomenons, horror themes and jump scare moments. The 2/3 is more like a military shooter. This is where you'll mostly be fighting the various possessed marine types, along with mid level demons guarding important area. There will always be the odd Imp type that crawls along the ground hiding under something or in a dark corner and occasional jump scare. Just to keep you on your toes. But Imp encounters will usually be groups of 3 - 7+ teleporting in from multiple points behind, near and ahead of you. They'll also start spawning in to support the possessed Marines and mid level demons. The last 3/3 you're Chasing Betruger to the the portal. You'll notice the horror is all but gone and the marines and their hitscan weapons are being replace by demons _(because you've pretty much killed them all)._ There are less jump scare Imps. But you should be accustom to them by now, making them more of a nuisance than anything. Then you enter Hell. And from this point on it's a DOOM game. You are given unlimited stamina. No weapons, but soon recover all of them with more than enough ammo and get the berzerk power up. The levels are more arena like. So keep moving, keep shooting, keep dodging projectiles from all the demon types and prioritize targets. I got Doom 3 three months after it came out for my new PC. Playing it at max graphics. The survival horror initially turned my off. So I played Half-life 2, Call of Duty and Dawn of War instead. As well as Halo 2 on Xbox. Then I got FEAR and Call of Duty 2. So I didn't properly play through and finish Doom 3 until 2006 and all I can say is. I wish I'd done it sooner. Great game.
At first you are not alone, you can even hear radio transmissions with gunfire, battle commands, etc. and then that's it, silence. You are last one alive at that moment.
Actually, there is no "survival horror" gameplay in Doom 3 at all. Survival horror means avoiding combat, relying on stealth and hiding from enemies. There is no part of this game where you have to avoid combat. Quite the contrary - you can exterminate every demon that attacks you.
@@AlexeiVoronin "survival horror like" _"survival horror_ *like"* In the very early game you only have the pistol with limited ammo and torch as a weapon. Which depending on your skill, the difficulty, how immersed you get into games and if it's your first time playing. After wasting bullets on jump scares. And barely *surviving,* yet another hit from a Zombie or Imp standing in silent in a dark. It'll have you on edge trying to survive the horror. Also I have only played the original PC release. Where you couldn't use the flashlight and gun at the same time. So a lot of the time when you switched back to your pistol, you'd be be firing into total darkness or a partial silhouette if you're lucky
@@ItsDeebs - Hmmm, this still doesn't count as "survival horror", I think. As a sub-genre, it is strongly focused on combat avoidance, being helpless and puzzle-oriented gameplay. This simply isn't the case with Doom 3. Besides, truly dark rooms aren't nearly as common as people believe - you really, really have to use the flashlight in only a few specific rooms in the game. And even they can be beaten without it, if you feel like challenging yourself...
I still think the crippled Doctor woman from Doom 2016 was the worst villain in the Doom series. Her entire reason for damning the Mars base was a mixture of pure selfishness and "the demons told me to do it"
One thing I always liked was that how in this game hell actually keeps their word for once. Betruger received all the power he desired and actually became the leader of the demonic forces; even commanding demons as powerful as the Archviles, Hellknights and Cyberdemon.
Your content is great and I would definitely watch more Doom 3 videos should you make them. I really enjoy Doom 3, I remember a degree of hate for the shift in tone when it first came out but I liked it then too. I am also a Resident Evil fan, monster horror in general really, but I'm don't think the two compare well. Although I could see a comparison between with RE5 and Village, Resident Evil 4 was the main RE game when Doom 3 was released and RE4 was shifting in the other direction with increasing action and comedy. While both Doom 3 and the RE games contain a horror element, the idea that Doom 3 made Doom more Resident Evil doesn't ring accurate to me, I don't really associate the word stealth with Doom 3 or the RE games of the period either. These are just my thoughts, not meant in hate or as a demand to change. Just sharing my thoughts and commenting in general to help the fight against the algorithm.
Personally, I think Half-life would be a more apt comparison to Doom3, and not just because it's also about teleportation gone wrong. It's the larger focus on exploration, puzzle solving, and environmental story-telling. Doom3 is still very much action-oriented unlike Resdient Evil's focus on survival, stealth, and completely different sense of progression. I think the reason Doom3 was such a departure is because the first Doom games had such a simple formula that adding even a little would drastically change it, so by the time Doom3 had to come out, the FPS genre had evolved to the point that the developers were stuck with the choice of either making something too similar or too different. It wasn't until Doom 2016 that they had finally figured out how to take the original formula work again.
Doom 3's narrative structure is also strikingly similar to Half Life. Both start off with you as a new employee who spends some time exploring the facility while things are still safe, both involve you exploring increasingly classified areas, and lead to you exploring the source of the extra dimensional invasion. One difference is that HL1 ended with you defeating the final boss in the alien dimension while Doom 3 has you return back to the facility so you can track down the second portal; not unlike Opposing Force, as a matter of fact
Doom 3 had gaming brilliance mixing paranormal with story, the scenes of psychopaths laughter and a skeleton spontaneously moves in the air duct as you traverse it. Awesome game and by far best of the franchise.... "Use us"
That was some really good storytelling about Bertruge Skyrionn. Great job! 👍 While i wasn't a big fan of the dark stealthy horror gameplay style (and the handheld flashlight🤬 ) I enjoyed having a more detailed story to coincide with the game.
something I really like and prefer over Olivia Pearce is how Betruger always remains in control, he's not reactive, but instead always in charge, he knows arcane arts and actually commands the hordes of demons throughout invasion on Mars, and even speaks for Hell itself as though he has full control over it. In the end, he does not come to regret making a bargain with Hell, which is a very important part of his characterization as a villain to me. He's not tricked by the demons, he gains power he always wanted and fully embraces his transformation, something that I also respected in dr Challus Mercer from Dead Space, and something that was lost in the remake of that game, sadly
I was around 11 or 12 when I played Doom 3 (my first Doom) and I loved it. Was also my first shooter. Scared me so much it took me about a year to beat the game, haha. Betruger's demonic laugh was horrifying.
Great video, it got me hooked and I watched till the very end🙂. Betrugar was a villain imo as per the script since human lives should matter more to you if you are sane than your research about something unworldly.
Doom Eternal is awesome and metal as F 🤟 but they made DoomSlayer so OP that I don't see any threat or danger to him(lore wise). Also OP in a weird way because he uses mortal human guns to kill demons, which means even humans and robots could kill demons the same way. But apparently his power is godly stamina and endurance, super speed and agility, strength to carry heavy armor and equipment. I mean, how efficient could DoomSlayer be using melee only weapons or enchantment weapons? Like Dante? Like Kratos? But instead he uses human weapons 🫤 weird isn't it? PS: Unless he passes his energy into guns and ammo and that's why guns are so deadly with demons ONLY when he uses them, not human soldiers.
So I’m not sure if any of the games ever explain it. In DOOM 2016 and Eternal they make mention of the Seraphim augmenting DOOMSLAYER. In the original set of games he was an ordinary soldier who could sprint at about 60 mph and could fist fight demons into a red paste if necessary. He was extremely proficient in firearms and melee with fists or a chainsaw. Now this is going to be a joke on my behalf here, but perhaps it was a burning retribution for the murder of our pet rabbit that gives us the strength to splatter demons since you learn from several manuals in DOOM 1 that the squad you were forced to join gets obliterated almost immediately upon entering the UAC facility on Phobos.
In my opinion, there isn't a bad Doom game out there (with the exception of Doom RPG which I have not played and have no opinion on). Doom 3 was done a bit differently, sure, but the basic premise is there. Hell invades, protagonist proceeds to kick hell's ass. The game even had a creepy atmosphere. The random whispers and chanting was just icing on the cake. I remember the first time playing it, when the invasion first starts and you can hear all the gunfire and screaming over the comms periodically and then eventually it all just quiets down, incredible. I DO enjoy the new Doom series better and kind of wish they could have incorporated Doom 3's lore into it better but Doom 3 isn't a bad game by all means and I still highly recommend playing it, especially if you can get the BFG edition on sale.
Every Doom game was a product of its time. In 2004, this sort of slower-paced, story-driven FPS games were in fashion, so Doom 3 fit in pretty well. Another circumstance to consider is that Classic Doom was often criticised for being a "mindless shooter with no story" (which isn't true, of course), so Doom 3 was a response to this, in some ways. The newer Dooms come at a time when the 90's shooter style is experiencing a revival, though Eternal seems to overcompensate, and thus "jumped the shark" with its over-the-top combat mechanics. I agree - there are no "bad" Doom games, only different ones.
According to some emails in game, Betruger was visited in his dreams by demons and offered a deal. Even before everything went to shit, medical personnel of Mars base reported significant increase in mental issues, as well as growing number of disappearance cases, where people would literally stop showing up to work and not respond in their quarters.
its my favorite Doom. Ive played it once a year since 2003. first game with real time shadows. pushed the industry to another level. its also well put together and at the time was id softwares most involved and well thought out game with a developed story line. You literally hear tons of screams in Doom 3, human bodies strapped on the hell sections, etc., yet in Doom 2016, it's almost only just demons.
like 2016 feels outclassed at what it tries by Doom Eternal honestly
But Doom 3 is different enough for me to feel worth playing
I still remember my shock by seeing Betruger's head cone out from the Madelic's mouth. Was so cool and creepy. I'm glad we get to take both out in Resurrection of Evil.
It was nasty.
🤢🤢🤢
I laughed uncontrollably when I saw that. Why would he want that to happen?
@@donaldduckdumbI always saw it as a punishment for his failure in the main game, considering he's screaming in pain as though he's being consumed. It's likely that the human part is dead by Resurrection of Evil and it is the demon itself that speaks using his head as its voice.

@@mattmedrala1947 when you're descending down the caverns in the very last level of Doom 3, you hear this very gruesome voice say "so you've made it this far...." in a voice other than that of Betruger...
Doom 3 has the best story out of all the Doom games. Truly underrated gem. I wish they would make a proper sequel set in the Doom 3 universe.
Doom 3’s flashlight mechanic is severely underrated. It really tied the game up as a horror game. I loved every second playing through this game. So much fun.
Dude your the guy who liked it huh! 😂 freaking hated it😂

@@Will-dn9dq well i liked it, every single bits of it
Its cause it was essentially just a showcase for (at the time) bleeding edge lighting technology so they designed the entire game around the lighting which nade it more horror action rather than doom-y quick shooter
@@marcosdheleno That’s what makes him a fun character, the fact that he’s just evil with nothing else.
Nice take.
@@AlexeiVoroninThey main difference is the overall tone of the story which really shows how much of an impact it can have.
That's very true. It's because of this idea I thought Sam Hayden was gonna be the main antagonist

Wait a second… doom 3 (stylized as doom cubed lol)… Doom cubed…. SOUL CUBE!?

Doom 3 was amazing. I rember finding a Coop mod back in the day that let you play it with up to 3 other people. Was so ground breaking at the time.

The design of Doom 3 is simply timeless.
No bro its not, design of marine in RoE is just ugly. Moveset of fight is low in that times you got painkiller the real classic doomstyle game. Doom 2016 is a lot better game gameplay allways is something more important then story.

Doom 3 is pretty underrated.
Sells good but it was mediocare game.

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
He made a deal with Hell for supreme power. I dunno about any good intentions.
@hardstyle905 he was probably a narcissist that was only using "for the greater good" as an excuse to seize power for him self, and probably didn't care about his other workers at all.

Please, don't call it "DLC". It was released on CD back in the day :P
@@AlexeiVoronin "survival horror like"
_"survival horror_ *like"*
In the very early game you only have the pistol with limited ammo and torch as a weapon.
@@AlexeiVoronin It does, if you play on Nightmare - your health constantly drains down to 25 hp, which is basically oneshot for most enemies.
This Doom game always put me in the mind of Event Horizon

Anthony Hopkins would have played an amazing Betruger 👍
I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Dead space lore would be a good service to cover
Thanks for watching. I understand your comment too. Looking back, I think maybe the stealth part was my playstyle.
I'd still like another horror Doom game
Doom 3's narrative structure is also strikingly similar to Half Life. Both start off with you as a new employee who spends some time exploring the facility while things are still safe, both involve you exploring increasingly classified areas, and lead to you exploring the source of the extra dimensional invasion. One difference is that HL1 ended with you defeating the final boss in the alien dimension while Doom 3 has you return back to the facility so you can track down the second portal; not unlike Opposing Force, as a matter of fact
I would love to see more doom 3 on your channel

Doom 3 lore? This is going to be interesting

something I really like and prefer over Olivia Pearce is how Betruger always remains in control, he's not reactive, but instead always in charge, he knows arcane arts and actually commands the hordes of demons throughout invasion on Mars, and even speaks for Hell itself as though he has full control over it.
Doom 3 happens in a different part of Mars in Mars city in 2145 and Doom 4 takes place in a different region of Mars and 2149, which is years later.
I replayed Doom 3 (including its expansions) and I forgot how dark and unnerving the whole atmosphere and premise was
Great video, it got me hooked and I watched till the very end🙂. Betrugar was a villain imo as per the script since human lives should matter more to you if you are sane than your research about something unworldly.
"Amazin things will happen here soon" sounds more like "Prepare for unforseen consequences".

Great video!
I'm not sure betruger was fully in control of his actions. Like at some point he actually became possessed by the demon he became
Really enjoyed the story being told through PDA audio diaries, emails and all the TV's around the UAC facilities.
I love DooM 3 and this was an amazing story! Thank you!
I remember when Doom 3 came out, most of the NEWEST computers had issues running it cause ID software was a bit ahead of their time with this game.
Its system requirements were monstrous by 2004 standards. And today even cheaper PC's can run it on the Ultra setting... it feels weird.
I’m playing this now on the switch and it’s super freaky and very immersive.
I hope this game somehow ties in with the rest of the lore and that we get a continuation of this. The enemies were something else.
I can't wait for the videos about maykr spiecies and spider mastermind
