Emma, coat it with warercolour ground and then you can paint on anything. The seal it with Dorland's wax. Looks great!
What kind of watercolor ground? What's the name brand? I've heard of what you're talking about before!
@@lmlafromboys I use the white Qor watercolour ground and have even painted on plastic and on my otter box for an old I phone. I think Daniel Smith has a some good ones too, ranging from clear and a bunch of colours.
@@lmlafromboys there's also Daniel Smith watercolor ground...
Yes but then it's also just like why did they bother making it fabric then, you can use watercolor grounds on every sketchbook cover etc.
I would love a peek inside your sketchbook :). Thanks for jumping in and showing us the easy and the scary in painting. I tell myself all the time "it is just paint and paper". Love ya!!
“It’s just a sketchbook cover” 😄 I LOVE how you kept saying “it’s okay”. You’re the one who inspired me to push boundaries and when things become a mess (which is like almost always for me) i now say “it’s okay” and move on but I don’t get frustrated or stop trying. All thanks to you.
Yes! She's always so positive, even when (you can tell) she doesn't want to be. LOL
Some of the best work comes from when you keep going.... and some of it ends up in the garbage haha. Just keep trying!
Why do some people do a thumbs down? What's not to like? I'd like to see reasons from said people.
Absolutely, I can't imagine WHY ? What is their mindset? Maybe jealousy? If you're watching something & it's "not your cup of tea", just go on to the next. There will always be the odd idiot out there. I think Emma is brilliant, she teaches well & explains things well. Love her colour mixing & shading techniques. 💛🎨💐
Dear Emma, dont worry about the construction sound, its really not a problem. We can all hear you well and enjoy your work and painting. And thats awesome! Thank you so much for your videos!
My word of the year is -courage- and you inspire me. You seem to combine courage and adventure and fun. Yes, thanks for this.
I'd love to see the cosmic theme in acrylics on the back. Great job!
I love that you continued it on thru bc I've thrown away some of my stuff that started out the same way! Now I know I should go ahead and continue to work it until I feel better about the way the colors are blending!
Emma, watercolor can be painted on any surface if you first paint the surface with a product called Ground. Ground is available from Daniel Smith watercolor paints. It works beautifully! Love your videos!!
It looks way better than you think. I love it.
I found that Daniel Smiths Watercolour ground on canvas gives a very exciting surface to work on but you have to work fast and loose.
Omg YES! Do a Bob Ross landscape please!
Good job, Emma! When you first started, I did not think it would end up this well LOL!
Wow! I admire your spirit to try out anything, so inspiring!
A tip that would help with this. QoR watercolor ground cold press is really cool and would let you paint on surfaces that are not meant for watercolor like wood metal glass and even this book. Works awesome I love it. Highly recommend it
It looks beautiful, no risk no reward
I like it ... a lot! Yes to the Bob Ross landscape!
I feel braver after watching you.
She makes us all braver I think 😬 💜
What if you did a layer of watercolor ground on top of the gessoed layer?
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe this would work well? I'd love to see it tried :)
Anything Bob Ross is a yes!!
Emma, I just recently started watching your videos and I just love your work. You are such a good teacher. I am just starting to do watercolor painting, so watching this video was exciting for me. I was thinking that maybe when doing watercolor on the Etchr covers, perhaps letting each color dry first before going over it may help in keeping it from becoming muddy on the first attempt.
The water looks so realistic!! You are better at ut than you think!!
It is really very pretty! I think you are a good artist. A really good one,
I love what you did here. I actually love this more than the the floral cover just bec I love sunsets. I’m gonna try this too on my Etchr lab journal or maybe try using gouache. Thank u Emma! I love your channel and I love your sweaters 😅. More videos pls on painting covers💕💕💕
Absolutely Beautiful!!🖌🎨🌅
Can you do one of these live?? You keep asking questions out loud lol and I want to answer....YES! DO IT!!!! 🤣
I definitely would like to see the Bob Ross landscape!
Emma, this turned out to be gorgeous. I will be so excited to begin the trees at the end.I loved the idea of you blending acrylic black painting with the watercolor..Thanking you ever so much. Have a great day.
It still came out pretty. I’m glad you have more covers to play with... I use fabric medium and watercolor ground when working on fabric, so I think you would enjoy it more with those to help you in your process. (Ground with hard items like sketchbook covers, and specific fabric medium when I paint on dresses.) Also the colors will stay vibrant with the use of ground because you won’t have that continual seeping happening - the water and pigments continued to drop past your canvas layer, into the board backing as it dried.
Can’t wait to see what else you create!
Love watching your videos.!!! I wish I would try more but instead I watch more 😂
I think it came out pretty damn neat!!
Invest in some Daniel Smith’s watercolour ground - you can put it on anything then paint watercolour on top.
Yes. Do Bob Ross. That would be fun. I wonder if you could put down some kind of sizing on the cover first before watercolor. Hmmm… great video though!
I bet you could make the patterns of light on the bottom of the ocean with interesting effect on this material.
You’re not in love with it, but I am!! I think it looks amazing!!!
I think it’s beautiful!
I think it turned out great.
It turned out gorgeous, I love it and I enjoyed seeing the mixed media approach from you.
For what it's worth, I've been loving all the new types of videos you've been putting out lately!
I think this one turned out beautiful! I actually like it better than the floral one (love that one too though). This landscape just looks really dreamy and magical, I love it.
Hey Emma, this was so great to watch! I was excited too to see how it will react with the surface and how the paint is going to blend... and it turned out amazing 😍😁 love the sky and how the sun turned out :) I tried watercolors on my art journal cover but I painted on decoupage surface - also didn't knew what will happen but I had so much fun! lol 😀😀 this looks amazing and I'm looking forward to your next sketchbook cover! 😀👏❤️
Love love it Emma 🥰🎨🖌️.
Btw, have you tried Derwent Inktense Watercolor? They come in Watercolor Dry Pans n Tubes, Watercolor Pencil, and Watercolor Blocks (like pastel). They do not "bleed" and spread (they spread a tad) much as Winson & Newton, but they Permanent n Light-fast, and are very bright. I use it for cloth canvas and silk. I used Derwent on my Jane Davenport Hardbound Watercolor Journal Book Cover with canvas; it doesn't need sealing since once dried, it's permanent n won't fade. Though since it's a cover, added Acrylic Medium wouldn't hurt for added protection.
I think it’s looking good.
You did a great job with this, Emma! I would have given up a lot sooner when the watercolor reacted differently from the watercolor paper. I'm glad you stuck with it. It's pretty!
If u rlly want a watercolor cover, you could always paint on a piece of watercolor paper and glue it to the cover of ur sketchbook, right?
Thank you for following my suggestion!!’ I loved it!! I’ll try on my sketchbook too
This is beautiful.
Thank you for once again bravely diving in and letting us watch your experience. Your honesty and reactions are so refreshing! I ordered a trio of these watercolor sketchbooks after one of your reviews. I also immediately tried to put watercolor on my etchr cover. Like you I immediately noticed how it spreads and gets absorbed on the thirsty canvas. I did some abstract until I felt comfortable then added some florals and fun, whimsical mica and colorshift watercolor too. Some parts I love some parts ...not as much but I learned a lot and after all, isn’t that what our sketchbooks are for? To practice on and learn on? To be brave and bold and just go for it? Thank you for creating content that is interesting, relatable, sometimes funny and also intriguing.....wondering where your journey will lead you. Love your channel Emma!
That looks amazing. Well done!
I love that you try these things and let us see it develop from nothing to something special. How about the Bob Ross one in acrylics and then doing another one in watercolour but using watercolour ground to prepare the surface first? I think that it would be great to see how different the process is? Love all your content x
I love the reflections in the water. I really like it but not sure I’d have the patience to do it. I wonder if gouache would look the same.
It came out gorgeous! Are you going to seal it? If so, what do you use?
I haven’t sealed it with anything. I have e a spray varnish I may try
I appreciate knowing you are not any more confident all the time than me. I appreciate you sounding just like me when I am trying to learn art.
I think it’s beautiful
It turned out great. I would have gessoed half way thru. 😃
I love it! The process with you talking your way through it was helpful. I like that you just went for it.
Hi Emma, Daniel Smith has watercolor ground, it’s a kind of gesso especially for watercolors. You can use it to protect absorbing backgrounds and prepare them for using water. You can get them in white black transparent and even some metallic colors. I am trying to pimp my agenda cover with watercolors and alcohol drops and it seems to work.
Superb scene. Enjoyed watching the process. Thanks.
Yes! Yes! Yes!
You did a great job. I kept yelling at my tablet you can do it.
That turned out great, after all your struggles! Yes, do a Bob Ross tutorial on one of your sketchbooks. 😀
Watercolor ground would really do you good for this project
Its just perfect!! Love it!
Nailed it! Didn't doubt you would fail it. 🥰
Adding in a few seagulls would be nice.
You could try going over the cover with watercolor ground?
Looks great!
I'm surprised you struggled with the watercolor on the cover however since you lean sooo much towards only florals, I could see how it'd be hard to do it on something not typical watercolor paper that your used to. But the key is, from what I can tel is either fairly detailed illustrative type watercolor is best on these fabric covers or the other end of spectrum very very "abstract" loose colors etc. Detailed work you just barely use water and it should stay in place atleast for the most part also you need very sharp point brushes and very very pure and pigmented colors etc. And if you want something soft and light and whatnot you need tons and tons of water and HUGE brushes lol. Probably using squirrel or better yet the silver brush sets. Large large would be ideal for this type. And detailed I'd reccomend waterproof pens, and possibly watercolor markers if your uncomfortable doing super fine thick watercolor paint brush strokes etc.
Hi that is really beautiful now
Wonderful tutorial l will love to try it but on watercolor paper just so I am sacred .
It looks great! I love it!!
That turned out great!
Hi Emma ... you are one brave artist! This turned out fabulous. When you first started painting, my hope was that you were going to paint a misty forest and incorporate that little etched llama into the forest ... just a thought! 👏😊
Beautiful
I did my Etchr Cover landscape using inktense blocks like watercolor. No ground or gesso. So long ago.
I bet if you had used Watercolor Ground you would have had a much happier journey. I still love it though
You should try Daniel Smith's watercolor grounds. Its like gesso but for use with watercolors.
Video coming out next week on watercolour ground!
Try using Golden Absorbent Ground first next time before using watercolor 😃
I think it turned out very pretty. Doing a Bob Ross would be fun!
Don’t worry about the construction noises Emma, they can’t be heard down here in Australia (ha ha) . Well truly it’s hard to hear them over your voice, it’s all good. More interested in what you are painting anyway. Looks good so far.
Emma you can also watercolor over gesso. A lot of mixed media artists do it especially Marta from Maremi's Small Art. It has a beautiful effect.....note I'm still watching your video and only 2/3 thru. I have no clue how it ends up. Lol. Knowing you it will be stunning and amazing like everything you paint.
Edit....yep turned out fabulous! I love how the water turned out.
Muy bonito Emma!!!
wow
OK, I learned I will leave my sketchbook white, when I get it! LOL It will be for my watercolor painting, so I don't want to use acrylics on it and clearly the water colors are not meant to use on the cover. Thank you, oh brave one... I did think your final result was pretty.
I really like it!! You say that you have problems with clouds but actually I think they look fab!!! It's not always easy stepping out of the box ..... with most things ... and I say kudos to you!!! 😊
Love this 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I love it! Can’t wait to see you paint more sketchbook covers.
Very cool
It looks great. At the beginning I tought you will give up. I would have :-) you are amazing. Where do you buy the sketchbooks?
I wonder if you had sprayed the cover with water first and then attacked it with a stiffer brush? Lol I dunno. Watching you that's what I would want to try. Im sure it's going to look beautiful. I can see it blending now.
I don’t know, but I think you should prepare the surface with some gesso maybe…
great tutorial ! thank you so much ! I wonder what would happen if you start by wetting (even soaking) the canvas ..
Can you do more mixing colour videos please? I love those !!!
Learning so much from you. Love to see another sketchbook cover video 😍
Have you tried a watercolor ground? It I
Video on it next week!
Have your tried using watercolor ground first?
I think you need to seal it on your sketch book so the watercolor don’t bleed off the page or blend together. So you save your art
It’s cool how if you use scrubbing on the part when she does the water (around 19 min) you can see the whole rest of the pic warping!
Emily Olson painted on a canvas bag, but she put down a coat of something first before the watercolor. I forgot what it was called.
i have recently purchased my first etcher sketchbook and thinking about
painting something on the cover. would gouache work better than watercolor?
