Hey I want you to make famous songs with creepy backstories vol 3 because I want you put kings of Leon ‘s pyro and eels ‘s Elizabeth on the floor or last stop this town

Zombie is a great song and that song always came across as a song about social unrest. The fact the children were the only ones to die makes that attack especially evil. Edit: RIP Dolores. 🙏
It's sad that children died, however the British have no right to occupy thr 6 counties. Ulster is Irish and the British need to end their centuries old occupation. If Unionist/Loyalist don't want to live in an Irish Republic they can immigrate to England or Scotland.
I remember the hunger strikes. It made the early 80s feel very bleak with black flags everywhere. I never want to go back to that. Thin Lizzy's Emerald is my song for the area I live.
@@BK-yo5zg It doesn't matter what you think, the people of Northern Ireland will decide whether they want to be part of Ireland and at the moment they don't want to reunite.
Sad fun fact(?): Dolores (Cranberries) was supposed to re-record the vocals for the song zombies with bad wolves and passed away a few days before. The song is amazing if anyone want to check it out.
She passed away the day she was to do the song with bad wolves. Bad wolves went ahead and recorded the song and donated all proceeds from the song to her children
As a Korn fan, I enjoy hearing about the horror stories behind the lyrics. It's pretty interesting. Some of the songs have a pretty messed up meaning so it's definitely not a band for everyone. However, I guess I use Korn as a way of coping, as I have a fair amount of trauma of my own.
Korn isn't really my kind of music, but I'm not knocking it because I know how subjective music is. There's no such thing as "music for everyone". I wonder if "Pretty" was a way for the songwriter to cope with what he had to see.
A friend of mine’s grandma’s first husband was Starkweather’s first victim (the gas station attendant). My dad remembers meeting Starkweather once, before his spree. My dad doesn’t have anything nice to say about the guy.
My grandmother who lived in london and who was Irish said that she was grateful people were not aware she was Irish until she spoke. Thank-you so much for covering these stories so well
My friend was arrested in London during a bombing campaign. He was born in New England in the US and has an Irish surname. He was arrested and beat until his story checked out.
@@indrimza I long and dream of a future that people just grow up from that kind of ignorance, they need to go out of their caves and interact with other kinds of people.
I always thought meaning of the song “Zombie” by The Cranberries, was a metaphorical depiction explaining what it feels like inside the mind of someone battling mental illness. When my depression was at its peak, I felt like everyday was an exhausting battle. Demeaning, crippling thoughts would relentlessly drowned my mind and I would continually have to train and recruit “happy thought soldiers” to battle them out!
That's....an interesting coping mechanism, honestly. I struggle a lot with depression and anxiety too, so maybe I should visualise little soldier dudes chasing my bad thoughts away. Could help.
I think that it's ok to take a song's lyrics for a different meaning than was the original intent. I understand about depression and using music as a coping mechanism. I do that all the time.
I always listened to the lyrics growing up. I remember know EXACTLY what TLC's song was about. They even explain the music in the music video. I'm actually shocked that people didn't know what it's about and thought the song was such a relaxing song. LOL
@AmosAlofSteel and we lived without cell phones. We played outside, rode our bikes, and in my case I was in high school. I'm over here reminiscing of my teen years and you try to ruin it with political nonsense. Life, for me, was happy and free. So much to love.
@@anklemania You always get one, man. I honestly wish I was around in the 80s. You do you and reminisce away. No shame in looking fondly at the past. As long as it makes you feel happy in the present.
I think we all can agree that every decade, every generation has its good points. Things that we can look back on with fondness and point at as something that the newer generation’s are lacking. The flip side to this coin is that everything has its negative points as well. Its like that with everything really. I grew up in the 80s myself and i look back at it as a great time too. I also have some degree of envy for the more present day gens. They have some much more access to information than we had, as pointed out better communication. Today we are so much more health conscious. We take the good with the bad i suppose, because like many things when we were born is not a choice. Therefore its not really something we can hold against one another. Im not saying anyone here is doing that, im only saying its ok to be kind to each other, especially online where we have some anonymity and can more easily choose rudeness over kindness. The world needs more kindness.
I literally had no idea that’s what zombie was about , gave me chills … I have such a higher respect for Dolores and her music now . I mean I already loved her ! But this is just some kinda depth she conjured that’s truly haunting and beautiful .
I think a lot of people just mindlessly listen to songs if it's of the pop music variety. A lot of the general public just assume the feel of certain songs based on their archetypes, like heavy metal is supposed to be 'dark and scary' and pop, RnB, all that stuff is supposed to be chill and upbeat. So they just tune out and listen to the music while the lyrics are just white noise. It's sort of the reason why songs like Pumped Up Kicks get played a lot despite the obviously dark lyrics, and in fact the band made the music purposefully upbeat to kinda troll the hipsters at the time. (or something like that. I can't find the proper quote)
I started listening to your narrations when I was around 17 or so when my mental health was at a low and I would spend hours in my room. I’d lay in bed and just hit play. Then it was creepy pastas, and even though I’ve heard the stories many times, the way you told them was like no one else. So soothing. I’m 23 now, it’s my day off, and mornings are usually the toughest time. I’m about to do some yoga to ease my mind and I know these narrations will definitely help!!🤎🤎 Sending you blessings brother!
I LOVE these types of Lets Read videos!! Please, please do more! When “The Way” first came out, my momma was obsessed with that song. (“Zombie” too, of course). We actually had the cassette tape and would play it every day. I NEVER knew the backstory behind that song… both are very interesting. I’ll have to share these her ❤️
whenever i listed to ‘zombie’, i always interpreted the line “what’s in your head?” as a polite way of saying “what’s wrong with you?” since most of the hatred and upset and violence stemmed from people blindly believing what they saw or told
I’m from Warrington in the uk, that bombing was the most horrible thing to happen to this town but it was the main thing that brought us all together❤️
Thanks for the upload. Was hoping for a volume 2 of this subject. You definitely said it best about Manson and The Beach Boys being intertwined. Once I jumped into the true crime community I could never shake these 2 apart
Video didn't even start yet, loved part 1 so much and wanted a part 2 so bad that I liked immediately! Longtime fan and love love love everything you upload! Thanks for the hours of content to listen to at work, in the car, and to fall asleep to! Also, I'm a huge fan of these types of stories and I'd love to hear more. Ghost stories, cryptid stories, Cemetery/Graveyard stories (been a while since we heard some of those) and Alien/UFO stories
It's 3:45 in the morning, I just finished listening to this. And now I need to throw on The Golden Girls to get rid of this lingering sad, scared feeling that I have. This was one of your best narrations.
Right on this just makes your narrative cadence and content creation jump miles ahead of the rest in the whole creepy stories genre. I may not care for most of the bands music but hearing you tell their backstory is way better. Great job.
Just to clarify, Zombie was released on the album No Need to Argue, which had several darker songs on it. The Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? album has Linger and Dreams on it.
Ah, the Temptations! One of my dad's favorite bands. I appreciate you telling us stories from decades long past. Great video! ETA I did have to exit out of the Korn story and skip to the next one. I cant handle anything regarding child abuse. I cannot imagine the level of PTSD Jonathan Davis must still have to this day from seeing such atrocities.
I like these!! Puts various songs we may have heard many times into a different light and introduce us to songs we may not have heard. I like the regular "creepy stories" but these are a nice change and I hope to hear more.
I was part of the Children of the Korn. I saw them in 95 at a small venue in Costa Mesa, CA (The Empire Ballroom). Some guy was climbing the speakers off the side of the stage (we were right up front) and the speaker stack kept swaying and I kept thinking that better not fall on me. Great show. Seen them many times since. IMO, nothing they’ve done since has topped their first three albums
Knocked it out of the park as usual. The first volume of songs with creepy backstories is my favourite video of yours, and this one might be even better!
When I was pregnant I would listen to these everyday. This is the first time listening since he was born 5 months ago since he was napping and he woke up from his nap heard your voice and started smiling so big 😂. Definitely recognized your voice. Gotta put my headphones in now that he's awake haha.
Actually, Joel, the Beach Boys released 2 follow ups to 1966's, Pet Sounds, before their 1969 album, 20/20, and those were Wild Honey, released in 1967 which sold poorly, and Friends, released in 1968 which was a moderate success... Brian Wilson really went through a lot of sh*t during this time, which included his health, the musical sturggle against the Beatles, and the Beach Boys record label as well as Brian's father putting presure on him, and it sadly took its toll on him...
I’ve actually heard about the inspirations for several of these songs beforehand, but it’s nice to see you making them available to a wider audience given how interesting they are. If you plan on doing a Part 3, I’d highly suggest Plush by the Stone Temple Pilots since if I recall correctly, the singer at the time was inspired to make this song after reading a newspaper article about a missing girl who later turned up deceased out in the Canadian wilderness. Truly makes the song take on a darker aspect alongside the music video when you learn about that, methinks.
Jimmy Eat World's "Hear You Me" and Weezer's "Mykel and Carli" were about two sisters who ran Weezer's fan club that died in a car accident in 1997. "Hear You Me" was kind of their catchphrase.
As a musician songwriter sound engineer and upcoming producer that loves horror this couldn't be a better combo !! Well done let's read made my night ,. big fan love yer videos . Keeping it real yo 💯!!
So sad but so intriguing. The first story's song I love despite the backstory. I originally thought it was about some war or battle based on the lyrics. Bad Wolf did a great remake of it in honor of Dolores' death (I think). Amazing work though Let's Read! keep up the amazing work!
What the record label did to Doug Hopkins was criminal and they have his death on their hands. Firing him is one thing, but withholding his earnings and essentially coercing him into signing away with his publishing rights for $15,000 is tantamount to extortion. His family should have sued the hell out of them.
I love the song zombie and had already knew it’s back story sad finding also sad the singer passed away long time ago but grateful for her work and brilliant voice ❤️
It’s interesting you brought up “The Way.” I remember a good few years back seeing the song on some kind of countdown on TV. In the show they talked about the backstory of the song and how it was based on a newspaper article about a missing elderly couple. Then sometime later they were found dead. Still love the song, but its history and the subsequent death of the couple just made it a bit creepy. This song actually came to mind when I watched the last video. Glad you included it in this one 😊
I've been hoping for a part 2 to the first Famous Songs With Creepy Backstories video, ever since you posted it, so I was really happy to see this! ^.^ By the way, the distorted sounding versions of the songs creep me out so bad. xD Not the best thing to listen to when I'm the only one awake in my house around 1:30 in the morning.
Hi. I just want to say that even though I am 42, surely your oldest listener, I still get genuinely scared whilst hearing your narrations. And I love it, thanks for being so spooky!
Manson terrorized The Wilson Brothers. He crashed 2 of their expensive cars, stole from them and was a leech from what they said. My mom's family was living in California during the Manson family murders and they didn't live far from the Tate house, from what my grandma said. She remembers being scared with two babies ( a two year old my mom and a new born- my uncle)and my grandpa was deployed (Navy). They didn't know the Manson family was just killing wealthy people, so they were scared. She and my grandpa also loved the Beach Boys, so I knew that one in particular.
I worked at the Boots branch in Arndale in Manchester. I loved it. Scary thought though with regards to the bombs. So sad for all affected back then ♥️
There is one song called sunflower by city and colour that clearly talks about someone dying. I'm trying to find what these lyrics are truly about. Take a listen to it and I want to know what you guys think. When they found your body Giant Xs on your eyes With your half of the ransom You bought some sweet, sweet, sweet Sweet sunflowers And gave them To the night Underneath the Star of David A hundred years behind my eyes With my half of the ransom I bought some sweet, sweet, sweet Sweet sunflowers And gave them To the night Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet sunflowers Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet sunflowers Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet sunflowers Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet sunflowers And gave them To the night
When I first moved to AZ, I caught Doug Hopkins and the Chimeras at a local Tempe joint. He was pretty hammered during the show, but he was also funny and talented. Sadly, I heard about his suicide that following winter. RIP
Wow! Thanks ! I am new on this channel. I’m a french canadian girl who starting to learn english and you are wonderfull. You have a tone of voice who is easy to understand and your subjects are so interresting. Thank you to help me to learn more easily! Hello from Montreal ✨
IIRC: the house on Cielo Drive where the Manson family members killed Sharon Tate, Abigail Folger, Jay Sebring, Wojciech Frykowski, and Stephen Parent was the former residence of Terry Melcher - a music producer who worked with The Beach Boys during the 1960s. He met Manson thru Dennis Wilson and auditioned him for some type of music contract, but he decided to pass on Manson for whatever reason. Melcher shared the home on Cielo Dr. with his girlfriend Candice Bergen until early 1969 when they broke up and moved out. The new tenants were Polanski & Tate. I believe Manson said that he knew Melcher had moved out of the home by the night of the murders, but Susan Atkins testified at her trial something to the effect that the Cielo Dr. home was chosen as the murder site to scare Melcher because he had made promises to the group and he didn’t follow through with them. So this has led to some speculation that the Tate murders were the result of Manson wanting revenge on Melcher for rejecting him/his music but failing to realize Melcher no longer lived at the residence.
Thank you for this video. I didn't know nothing about Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska. That's really sick. I enjoyed the video and I like to see Part 3. Great work.
Zombie is a reference to men. Prior to our ongoing cold wars, men were demanded to fight in war. If a man didn't want to go, he was called a zombie. A person dead to the US who didn't mean anything. He was then thrown into war. In fact, most men were thrown into war without consent. It's something just not talked about. That and men with horrible, life crippling PTSD from killing people and the other traumas of war were considered deserters and stripped of all honor and titles and left to die in hospitals.
Well done . Cranberries were amazing. They were banned on a lot of radio. Lots going with Mason. From what I've read, beach boys stole that song I think another, or lyrics maybe. They were supposed to sign him, didn't. So he stole and trashed his place and squatted. That inspired the crimes. GNR remade one of his. The songs are actually pretty good. Great video
Metallica-Fixxer and Dio-Give Her The Gun have similar meanings to Pretty I believe. Same with Korn-Daddy. Slipknot's Purity was about a girl being buried underground alive but it was faked
Korn's song Daddy is about Johnathan Davis's molestation from an adult figure from when he was a child. He will not talk about that song. Has never played it live. He will not play it. That crying at the end is his real pain. Just wanted to point out that it was different than Pretty. I used to be huge into Korn and that's a fact I know.
What the record label did to Doug Hopkins was criminal and they have his death on their hands. Firing him is one thing, but withholding his earnings and essentially coercing him into signing away with his publishing rights for $15,000 is tantamount to extortion. It's 3:45 in the morning, I just finished listening to this. And now I need to throw on The Golden Girls to get rid of this lingering sad, scared feeling that I have.
This was one of your best narrations.
I just did the exact same thing!
Also, Smashmouth's "Walking on the Sun", "Hemorrhage" by Fuel, and "No More Tears" by Ozzy would be great on your next list.
“No More Tears” is pretty horrifying when you take the time to listen to it.
I remember one was about drug use, what was the backstory to Hemorrage - Fuel?
@Jennifer Williams iirc, it's about one of the band members' wife having a miscarriage.
Runway train, I just found out the meaning of that one a few years ago
Walking on the sun is about global warming (climate change now)
Does anyone else go onto let's read playlist and listen to the stories during the week until a new video is uploaded
Of course!! 😁
yes!
All the time!
My husband is a vet. Zombie makes me want to cry when I hear it.acts of war are horrible.
It's good to see that others can learn about these back stories. It's not always rainbows and butterflies.
Agreed
I think the couple in "The Way" was their way out. They pulled a Thelma and Louise when they realized they were going to lose each other.
On my way to Warrington right now, it’s 6:30am and I’m a passenger in a van, love the stories 😎
TY JOEL. I liked this so fast
Actually, Joel, the Beach Boys released 2 follow ups to 1966's, Pet Sounds, before their 1969 album, 20/20, and those were Wild Honey, released in 1967 which sold poorly, and Friends, released in 1968 which was a moderate success... Brian Wilson really went through a lot of sh*t during this time, which included his health, the musical sturggle against the Beatles, and the Beach Boys record label as well as Brian's father putting presure on him, and it sadly took its toll on him...
bless this channel for the content it uploads.
It's always nice to find fellow STP fans. I'm a huge Stan for Scott, lmao
Yay! STP fans! I like the suggestion btw.
Jimmy Eat World's "Hear You Me" and Weezer's "Mykel and Carli" were about two sisters who ran Weezer's fan club that died in a car accident in 1997. "Hear You Me" was kind of their catchphrase.
I know it’s been done a bunch of times but I love Pearl Jam so I’m going to suggest their song Jeremy.
I am an STP fan as well 😊
RIP Scott 💐
I LOVE these episodes about dark back stories for songs. I know a lot of them, but there a couple I wasn’t aware of.
Great content!! Keep it up!!! 😄🤘
Joel learning the meaning behind songs is a hobby of mine. Please do more volumes of this.
As a musician songwriter sound engineer and upcoming producer that loves horror this couldn't be a better combo !! Well done let's read made my night ,. big fan love yer videos . Keeping it real yo 💯!!
The Way’s story gave me goosebumps
YES! For music history AND the fun "guess the song" intro for each segment.
Love these types of video. Appreciate the hard work. 😊
Really excellent eerie fade effect with the song distortion between segments (and superb narration, as well)
YESS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
So sad but so intriguing. The first story's song I love despite the backstory. I originally thought it was about some war or battle based on the lyrics. Bad Wolf did a great remake of it in honor of Dolores' death (I think). Amazing work though Let's Read! keep up the amazing work!
Top shelf post. You know how I love these backstories. What a great guy you are buddy.
Thx for posting MORE podcasts, LR. Looking forward to this video coming to a podcast near me SOON!
Gin Blossoms is one of my favorites, such a shame with how it all ended :(
Their next album was "Congratulations I'm Sorry" because their next album was so successful but they had lost their friend.
Fun fact: during the music video of tlc waterfalls the part with the mother and son part of the son dies via getting shot during a drug trade
I've been hoping for a part 2 to the first Famous Songs With Creepy Backstories video, ever since you posted it, so I was really happy to see this! ^.^
By the way, the distorted sounding versions of the songs creep me out so bad. xD Not the best thing to listen to when I'm the only one awake in my house around 1:30 in the morning.
Johnathan Davis wanted to be a coroner, but guess he became a.......Kornorer
The Korn story, wow. just...wow...
YESSSSS! My favorite part of Monday!!!
My two favorite things, horror and music, you’ve done it again
Hi. I just want to say that even though I am 42, surely your oldest listener, I still get genuinely scared whilst hearing your narrations. And I love it, thanks for being so spooky!
Same age here!
@@ashextraordinaire this makes me feel better!
I’m 57 😊
@@Jessica-fq5wy Our high school years had the best music!
My uncle listens, he's 64😏
Loved part 1, I'm so excited to listen to this!
I love the special intro music for this one, it was fitting for the video.
I didn’t see part 1 so idk if this is in there, but I think “in the pines” belongs in this list.
The annual anniversary of the Tate-LaBianca murders is my birthday...😮
Weird that this is the topic tonight. Just last night I was reading about the stories behind the song 'Jeremy ' by Pearl Jam, sad.
I worked at the Boots branch in Arndale in Manchester. I loved it. Scary thought though with regards to the bombs. So sad for all affected back then ♥️
Awesome! Thanks for uploading Joel 😍
I totally got Waterfalls because of the music video.
This also made me think of some new order songs that were written in tribute to ian curtis
There is one song called sunflower by city and colour that clearly talks about someone dying. I'm trying to find what these lyrics are truly about. Take a listen to it and I want to know what you guys think.
When they found your body
Giant Xs on your eyes
With your half of the ransom
You bought some sweet, sweet, sweet
Sweet sunflowers
And gave them
To the night
Underneath the Star of David
A hundred years behind my eyes
With my half of the ransom
I bought some sweet, sweet, sweet
Sweet sunflowers
And gave them
To the night
Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet sunflowers
Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet sunflowers
Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet sunflowers
Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet sunflowers
And gave them
To the night
When I first moved to AZ, I caught Doug Hopkins and the Chimeras at a local Tempe joint. He was pretty hammered during the show, but he was also funny and talented. Sadly, I heard about his suicide that following winter. RIP
Wow! Thanks ! I am new on this channel. I’m a french canadian girl who starting to learn english and you are wonderfull. You have a tone of voice who is easy to understand and your subjects are so interresting. Thank you to help me to learn more easily! Hello from Montreal ✨
Rip Dolores! Zombie is still by far, one of my favorite songs and one of my favorite songs to karaoke.
What a crazy story! this channel has inspired to make creepy videos Love your work
IIRC: the house on Cielo Drive where the Manson family members killed Sharon Tate, Abigail Folger, Jay Sebring, Wojciech Frykowski, and Stephen Parent was the former residence of Terry Melcher - a music producer who worked with The Beach Boys during the 1960s.
Great work.
This was a good one. Thank you, and can't wait until Vol. 3!
This is FRICKEN AWESOME!!!!! ❤️ Love this dark lyrics stuff. More more more!!!!!!
Loved the different approach to sum scary story’s🙏🏽loved this channel for years
you should have done one about: no excuses - alice in chains, Jeremy - Pearl Jam, and Polly - Nirvana they have some scary lyrics
Awesome suggestions! You must be from my generation!
Polly was in the other video
@@ForgottenDaydreamer oh ok
Zombie is a reference to men. Prior to our ongoing cold wars, men were demanded to fight in war. If a man didn't want to go, he was called a zombie. A person dead to the US who didn't mean anything. He was then thrown into war.
In fact, most men were thrown into war without consent. It's something just not talked about. That and men with horrible, life crippling PTSD from killing people and the other traumas of war were considered deserters and stripped of all honor and titles and left to die in hospitals.
I thought the song was about the British & IRA fighting ? Uhm it sits right as I live in Northern Ireland but perhaps am wrong.
@@demonicenemy9265 it was a well known hate word for men world wide. It's that word. Not the entire song, that hate word.
@@hospitalcakewalk ah right I get you now (:
Yesss! Here early finally! I can't wait for this one!
The best of the best right here. Thanks Lets Read!
@@AlwaysKDawg I know, both are kind of about abuse as a child though
@@AlwaysKDawg I think he played it live once or twice
Great topic, excellent research and narrated as always.
Honourable mention for me would be suffer little children by The Smiths or Polly by Nirvana.
He covered Polly in the first video in this series.
Great video. I appreciated hearing the stories behind the songs.
The next album Gin Blossoms released was called "Congratulations! I'm Sorry" and it's impossible not to think it had something to do with this...
What the record label did to Doug Hopkins was criminal and they have his death on their hands. How come you don't have more subscribers??
This channel is fascinating!!
Wow I'm a massive fan of the cranberries and also irish but never knew this song was about the bombings. I just found this channel as a suggestion yesterday and I'm binging on the playlists there brilliant so well researched and narrarted too. Great channel I'm addicted well done to all🇮🇪
