During Shawn Kemp’s rookie season Bird went up to him and told him “hey rook, you’re the one who broke all my high school records and you bullied my little brother on the court, so I got something for your ass” and Larry ended up scoring 40 and got a triple double in that game. Larry was cold blooded
Mr. Payton was right about Larry Bird being somewhat underrated by lots of people who discount his speed, jumping ability, and basic athleticism, in spite of the numerous awards and championships he's accumulated. Mr. Payton also pointed out that Bird was smart, very smart in fact. He might be the most basketball savvy player I have ever seen in my 75 years on this planet. In addition to the highly developed basketball intellect that he possessed, his tenacity and focus on the job at hand was almost unparalleled also.
It's true....white guys in the 80s 90s had 2 purposes the rough stuff and shooting...now just shoot....Stockton and bird might be the only 2 who were different
Bird always had crazy stats but stats don't tell the whole truth. Bird could control the entire game without even scoring himself. He was a basketball savant with a killer instinct who made his teammates Hall of Famers when they likely wouldn't be that without him. He was that guy and a killer on the court.
Wouldn't shake a players hand? Sounds like an azzhole to me but I get the Romanticism with Larry by black players. It's similar to the Romanticism of Eminem by black rappers.
Dominique Wilkins was one highlight real after another . Also you never heard him whine like some of these players of today. True gent on and off the court
80's basketball was something else. Robert Parish lost it, for good reason, and floored Bill Laimbeer with punches and refs didn't even call a foul. That was the true golden age of NBA basketball not because of that but because players had to be ready to go to war to win.
Bird was a venomous trash talker and killer competitor, even if he looks the opposite of that, but he still respected folks, even rookies, who didn't back down and went toe to toe with him like Wilkins said because other greats who were rookies say the same thing.
JJ Redick trying to say Larry Bird, isn’t one of the greatest three-pointers all time! Lol pleeaaaasssse! Larry legend had that mamba mentality before Jordan and Kobe.
Dominique one of my all time favorites grew up in the Boston area I remember 1 game where these 2 went back and forth and literally didn't miss a shot until later in game GREAT STUFF
Wilkins and Bird had a lot of notable wars in the 80's. Folks talk about the 60 point game the most but Wilkins and the rest of the Hawks against the Celtics were as great as basketball can be.
I heard a story about Larry Bird being in the 3 point contest one time and, Larry goes in the Locker Room and tells everyone he’s coming in 1st place and he asked who’s coming in 2nd like bro he does that.😂😂😂😂😂😂
Dom Wilkins was in two wrong eras. He was a rookie in 82 when LA and Boston(Phili once) dominated the NBA. Then the Bag Boy😂 Pistons won 2 rings. Then the Jordan/Pippen curse came on when Chicago won 6 rings, Houston won two with Jordan's absence from the league. I felt that the Hawks could have put at least one team together to win Wilkins a ring. But that's just how competitive that the NBA was in the 80s and 90s with the Larry n Magic show, and the Bulls era.
I watched all of these guys during this era. There's no such thing as a GOAT, But Larry is one of them. There was no one better than Larry, Kareem, Wilt, Magic, Bill Russell, Jordan, Magic, LeBron, Steph Curry, Kobe, Durant, and there may be a couple that I am leaving out. But there is no way that anyone could not say that any of these guys aren't the GOAT.
Love Larry, but also love Nique, such a great person and athlete! And cannot but also love Gary P. apart from the great sh!t-Talking and competitor, he's such an honest story-telling character!
You're tripping. Payton was one of the best defenders and one of the biggest trash talkers of all time. If he's saying Bird was that guy, it's more than relevant.
@@citypopFM Payton came into the league in 1990, when Bird's career was winding down. Not only did he not play against Bird very much, they wouldn't have guarded each other because they played different positions. Nique came into the NBA in 1982. So Payton wasn't a part of the 80's era, that's what I'm saying.

For some reason I read that in Sean Penn’s voice. Maybe cause it reminded me of his character Pac Man from Colors
