I fell in love with Christian art and have many books with pages of beautiful Christian paintings. I have looked at the history, and signs and symbols in the art, and how we've lost so many traditions that would have been all around us in previous times. I have been working on Christian quilting, beading and embroidering for several years now, and struggling with getting it right for the Lord. I do love it though, and it helps me feel closer to Him.💖

Liturgical images help to awaken and nourish the faith of the believers. The image of Jesus Christ is the liturgical icon par excellence. Other images, representations of Our Lady, Angels, and of the Saints, signify Christ who is glorified in them. Through liturgical art let us proclaim the same Gospel message that the Sacred Scripture communicates by the word.
Such a lovely talk .. i have images pf Our Lady of Fatima. And my crucifix in my bedroom to remind me of you my Lord and my Saviour. Thank you Father. You are such a gift to us. God bless ❤
we built a new church and our parish priest emphasized that he wanted Jesus on the cross , also a statue of Mary and finally two years ago we also purchased the statue of Joseph holding his beloved son Jesus, when walking into church you see these beautiful images and it just draws you in , aware that you entered a Holy place . Mary is surrounded by votive candles and the children love to go light these candles, it is so beautiful to see the children / adults come before Mary , kneel and pray and then light the candle ,
I love Catholic crosses and artwork. At Christmas I have 9 beautiful Nativity sets on my bookshelves. My grandson said my home is like walking into a church. There’s no room in my house for Santa or the Bunny anymore.
Hi 👋 Happy day 158! The true, the good, & the beautiful lifts our hearts & our minds. It’s too bad that some of the more modern art in the Church is so UGLY! I’m sorry that sculpture in the JP II hall at the Vatican is just ugly…As are most of the logos & art for special celebrations, posters, brochures, & such. Don’t get me started on churches built over the last 40 years. SMH 🤦♀️ lol
I think we should always go all out for God, the most uplifting hymns, singing, choirs, instrumentals, the most striking art/ images, an array of floral arrangements, stained glass, wall hangings, mosaic, candles, incense. My local parish puts huge effort in to create such a deeply spiritual and prayerful experience to worship God firstly but it also allows us or leads all to enter into deep prayer together. It involves most of the human senses.
@@MorreHope I love flowers too but I have a red thumb. That means that I have a hard time growing and keeping alive flowers and plants. @@dianefrank3688 My choir director speaks French; and I mixed up what she said. I think. I went to the next church; in the next town over. I spoke with the priest. He is a very normal priest; he gave a very normal mass. I spoke with him; and he is the priest for two churches; which he is the one and only priest for my church. I asked him about the other person; and he said; there was no such a person. He is French Canadian. I can rest assure he is not going to do Flamenco foot work for mass. Ha. Our feathers were ruffled a bit. Today, I was out all day with my fun friends from church; - as mentioned before. We go visit the nun; and bring her communion. We sing a song or two; and the presence of the Lord comes down; and my eyes get watery.

On a second note, I ask for the prayers from the entire CIY Community & from you, Fr. Mike, as well, as there was another tragic death in my family in the early hours of the morning. One of my greatgrandson's let his demons take ahold of him & he died of a drug overdose. The attendees tried to resuscitate him but to no avail. He was 35 yo & left behind a very loving & vulnerable 9 yo son, who unfortunately, due to his mentally unstable mother, has been awarded custody to live p/t with my niece & her husband & her 2 adult working f/t sons & his mother's parents who live locally & both sets of families, by the grace of God, get along well with each other. His son Carter is a bright, lovable, intelligent boy who absolutely loves his Dad..he's like his shadow when they're together! He will need most of your prayers.. he will be so devastated! Dear God in heaven above, please have mercy on your child. He tried to overcome his demons, but he was Baptized in the Name of the Lord, he was welcomed into your Kingdom as a babe..please take his hand..hear him out..I'm sure he wants to come back to You, O Heavenly Lord, in Your Precious Son's Name, Jesus Christ. Amen! 🖤💔❤️🩹❤️🔥📿🙇♀️😓
Oh, I’m so sorry for your loss 😔😢 I will pray the Divine Mercy for your grandson who lost his battle with drugs. I sincerely believe that at the hour of death, if we pray for them, God clears the minds of those caught in an addiction & offers His Divine Mercy to them. My mother was an alcoholic who died from that addiction. I pray the Divine Mercy chaplet for her & all of my deceased family, as I’m the only Catholic in the family. I’ll also pray for his son.🙏❤️ I’m reading St. Faustina’s Diary & following its reading online. It would bring you a lot of comfort, I think, to hear what Christ told St. Faustina about sinners & His Divine Mercy. I really recommend her diary.

It's so true that one can be inspired by art. I used to attend a church that has very few statues or paintings that the priest there once commented that it looks more like a Protestant church. The music was towards pop and folk. Sometimes I found myself suffering through the singing. I returned to my ancient church which had completed its renovation. Ancient sculptures and the beautiful stained glass all cleaned and in tact with a the traditional choirs chanting in Latin. I feel like I'm back at Mass. Thanks be to God for this beautiful church🙏🏻✝️🙏🏻
I've never contemplated at much length the existence or reasoning behind spiritual or religious art because the expression of art to make invisible realities ingestible by the material senses is so natural. And at least in the US making art and drawings and pictures os one of the very first thing a child does that is a pure, natural, and innocent expression. I've never met a a Christian in person who opposed religious artwork, though I have met a Muslim who said Catholics worship statues etc. Today's reading gives food for thought, thank you! Holy Mother beseech your Son to bless me, my family, and all participating in CIAY with good health and healed realtionships and security in our lives that we may give You praise and undistracted focus on seeking You, help us to organize the things that don't matter so we can fully and gratefully embrace the things that do. Please close every wrong door for us and five us the grace of humility and courage to walk through the right doora that lead to everlasting life. Amen.❤❤❤
We just visited a beautiful church in Greensboro NC. Our Lady Of Grace Catholic Church. Beautiful!! The way a Catholic church should look also in Erie PA there is a very old Catholic church that rivals almost anything I saw in Europe. A shame though depressed inner city nothing but a few old people going there. Heartbreaking the young are missing out on beauty that is right in front of them. We have raised a culture to seek the lowest they can be as a human. It's evidenced by the broken lives of so many at such a young age. I don't know how they can ever be reinculturated to what is right and just good and beautiful the way our nation is today
Years back in Chicago I did a tour of the churches. There are the most beautiful churches there. Now I hear many of them have been closed and sold off. I do not know where the young people are. The Latin mass had so many young people and families coming back to the church and now they took that mass away from them, so I guess they don't want families. My sister went to a Latin mass and it was full with young families with beautiful music and now they have been thrown out of the church. Latin was the universal language of the Roman Catholic Church and now you are a Sinner if you want to go to a Latin mass. I can see why that Latin congregation is confused and dishearten.😢🙏
Thank God for icons and images. I recently bought a beautiful painting "Madona and Child" . I'm thankful to God that I can afford it since it's a good size. I work at home and seen it helps me to disconect when stress comes along. ❤ thank you father Mike for the explanation and examples on today's reafing. God bless you.

Father in Heaven we thank You for the Gift of Heaven, where You, our True Father, await us with open arms in our House, for no house is more complete, more solid, more inviting than Heaven. Father we thank You for the Eternal Gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior who showed us the Way, the Truth and the Light. Father He Chose the Nails, He endured ALL forms of unspeakable torture for us, for me, and He made it possible for us, for me, to enter the Eternal Beauty of Heaven. Father we thank You for the Gift of Your Holy Spirit, Your Active Presence here, on earth, Eternal Love who makes It Happen, He Guides and Strengthens us, me, for through God All Things are Possible. The Lord is near. 6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.

8:25 The role of art is meant to point to something greater than itself. There are the 3 Transcendentals: the true, the good, and the beautiful. Words are meant to reveal the truth, draw us closer to the good, unveil beauty. And so similarly, art is meant to do this as well. Liturgical art is meant to lift the mind and the heart to the Lord, and does this in a way that sometimes words can't do.
So that explains Modern Art & its lack of true & good beauty. The 1st time I ever went to a real museum of great art was at the National Gallery of Art in DC as an adult. It had samples of great art through the ages & could have spent hours & hours just lost in the beauty. Next we went over to the National Modern Art Museum & the contrast was so jarring. I expected to be transported with beauty again. What a let down! Some of the art was interesting, some just stupid (a canvas painted white!), & a lot that was downright grotesque. What conclusion should one draw regarding art that elicits those responses & enshrined in our nation’s capitol?
@@TrixRN Perhaps the conclusion is to keep listening to Fr. Mike because our nation needs prayers. And to be grateful for people like you reminding us of the beauty and to stay strong upholding the standard not getting demoralized. Thank you for sharing, Theresa! Hope you have a light-filled peaceful Sunday.
@@JohnHenrysaysHi I pray fervently for our country, especially for a spirit of repentance to sweep through the nation. We must, as a nation, repent of the evil we are spreading throughout the world, withholding economic aid unless poor countries adopt abortion “rights” or transgender & homosexual ideologies. God will judge this nation if we don’t repent. It breaks my heart to see what we’ve become.💔😢 But I’m old now. Sometimes I feel there’s nothing I can do, but I know I can pray. So I do a whole lot of praying.😊🙏❤️
I also want to say that as a Protestant I used to criticize the use of statues and images in the Church as a blatant violation of Commands 1 and 2. But it was aptly pointed out to me that God himself commanded the use of images in certain situations, despite the first two of The Ten Commandments. Examples would be the carvings of the cherubim in the Temple, the cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant, and Moses' use of the snake on the staff in the desert when the Israelites were plagued with venomous snakes one time during their 40 Years of wandering. There ARE uses for images!
Day 158 takeaways: A picture is worth a thousand words. Christians use images to help them pray. In the Old Testament, one of God’s commandments is that we shall not make graven images. With art work, it is not the image we honor but rather the person or event it represents. Additionally, this art work represents historical realities that are not myths or fables. The role of art is to unveil and point to something greater than itself. The invisibility of truth, goodness and beauty are revealed in words and art. The art work and statues in Churches make those who enter realize they are stepping into another world. They move one to contemplation and can set our minds and hearts on fire with the love of God.
The Father, just love live love your introductory prayer. It's so simple and so relevante to the chapters of the day. May God bless you and strengthen you with His Holy Spirit that you can continue to norish us with His word. Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, save us and the whole world
It was nice hearing about St John Damascene and the Council of Nicea about holy images. I've also looked into other Saints who defend icons and St Theodora also is one! Praying for all!! 🙏💓💞

Just a thought, a lot of people throughout history were illiterate. Painting and other forms of art may have been used as a substitute, in many cases, for the written word.

When the church says economy, a modern American English translation would be system. Logical rules are systemic. And a change in system is a paradigm shift.
My house is filled with artwork of portraits and beautiful statues of Jesus, the Blessed Mother, St Joseph, St Michael the Arch Angel, etc.. On my front porch I have a beautiful statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus and an Angel. A protestant friend tells me that I am worshipping icons and that I should have a plain cross because my crucifix indicates that Jesus never rose from the dead. I've tried to explain that my art work and crucifix is a reminder of the love I have for Jesus, Mary and the Saints and the cruxifix reminds me of what Jesus did for me and how much he loves me. I tried to explain that if he has photographs in his house of people he loves, it's the same thing, but he keeps going on and on. Any suggestions?
All the acts of God are eternal, so Jesus is eternally offering Himself to the Father for our salvation, and we enter His Sacrifice by offering ourselves in union with Him at every holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The Crucifix is a reminder of these realities. The Resurrected Jesus still shows His wounds to His Father in Heaven.
I am very moved by Liturgical artwork & objects & have some statues & prints in my home. Are rosaries included as religious objects in this lesson? I am a collector of rosaries & I carry them in my pockets, they are at each place where I sit at home & in my car & for certain wrapped around my right hand & fingers at night when I pray while I practice for death, lying there in peaceful silence...no more music. 🙏🏻❤️ God bless you, as well @Strawberrysmile
Hello everyone & Happy Day 158!🙏
Hello all and happy 158❤
Hi 👋 Happy day 158! The true, the good, & the beautiful lifts our hearts & our minds.
It’s too bad that some of the more modern art in the Church is so UGLY! I’m sorry that sculpture in the JP II hall at the Vatican is just ugly…As are most of the logos & art for special celebrations, posters, brochures, & such. Don’t get me started on churches built over the last 40 years. SMH 🤦♀️ lol
@@TrixRN The church of my childhood had such beautiful images. You felt the holiness as soon as you walked in. ❤
🙋😊Day 158.
God bless you for that explanation Fr. Mike. Thank you.
That is how most of the churches were until many of them were stripped in an effort to make them more modern. 😥
I am a fanatic of flowers
@@MorreHope I love flowers too but I have a red thumb. That means that I have a hard time growing and keeping alive flowers and plants. My mother had and my son has a green thumb they could and can grow anything. I now have my computer back after three days. I hope to catch up and be on track by day 163.🥰
@@dianefrank3688 My choir director speaks French; and I mixed up what she said.
@@MorreHope I am so happy that you took the time to investigate the whole situation. I have been praying for you. I am so glad that all this turned out good and that you and your friends had a good day. 🥰🙏

Amen!

I’ll also pray for his son.🙏❤️
I’m reading St. Faustina’s Diary & following its reading online. It would bring you a lot of comfort, I think, to hear what Christ told St. Faustina about sinners & His Divine Mercy. I really recommend her diary.

All Catholics living in the US or visiting the US should make a special effort to visit the Basilica of the immaculate conception in Washington d.c. to see a stellar example of a church filled with beautiful art and inspiring icons.
I have never been there in person but have seen the masses from there broadcasted on EWTN and I saw a documentary on it. It is so beautiful, I would love to see it in person.❤🙏
@@dianefrank3688 It is breathtakingly beautiful! I was privileged to worship there on Jan 1, Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, this year when I visited my son in DC. It was after I got there & saw the gorgeous mosaic of Christ that I realized that I used to see it on EWTN.

8:06 Words are symbols that represent a deeper reality. Artwork is a symbol that represents a deeper reality.
The fact that a word is a symbol, thus in itself not different from art or an icon as a symbol is a really good point! Thank you Fr. Mike.

My favorite Bible verses:
Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your gentleness be known to everyone.

@@TrixRN Your prayers are very helpful! Happy Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ!

The risen Christ picture is Beautiful to look at after the bread and wine!
I have several favorite pieces that I love and that always lift me up. Thank you. God Bless.

Just a thought, a lot of people throughout history were illiterate. Painting and other forms of art may have been used as a substitute, in many cases, for the written word.
I believe there were even saints who were illiterate.

When the church says economy, a modern American English translation would be system. Logical rules are systemic.
And a change in system is a paradigm shift.
I have a picture of the Pieta. That really moves me
My house is filled with artwork of portraits and beautiful statues of Jesus, the Blessed Mother, St Joseph, St Michael the Arch Angel, etc..
Peace & prayers to all!
