Honestly mate, I'd been waiting to do this for *years* 😁 so to finally have him in the rig was something special. It doesn't matter how old you get, the feeling of pride you get when you say "Hey Dad, come look at this!" when you're showing off something cool never goes away.
To be honest he was quite nervous about doing the race but I thought he did an amazing job 😁 and yeah on those first few sessions when he was still getting used to it I could see he wanted to go faster but didn't have the muscle memory quite sorted out yet. Once it clicked he could let loose a little more and just take it in, must have been amazing to jump up from a controller like that.
Nice video! I'm 63 and get this totally. What a bonding session. Hey dad remind your son that there is shipping from the land down under to the UK and you would be glad to cover that cost, I mean it's already setup all you would have to do is assemble...LOL However it may be cheaper if he just writes out the check and you can get it all in the UK and the he could make new videos on "Walking my dad through his own sim rig setup from Australia to the UK"! Nice to ride along with you. Early am here in the central US and my coffee cup is now needing a refill. Cheers
Oh trust me, I've offered my old G29 wheel to my Dad _several_ times but unfortunately there's just no room back in the UK. It's not exactly the biggest of houses and he races at the dinner table, packing the computer and monitor down to the floor when not in use. I'd love for him to have some kind of wheel and pedals setup but realistically it's just not an option 🤔 which is why I'm so happy he was able to come over here and at least experience what it's like. That said, he's not exactly a slouch on track using a controller and is right in the middle of the pack battling away for most races!
well as far as i can see here is that your father is absolutely talented in driving the car in a simulation. I know many other "kind of older" guys that didnt have any sense for driving a car in a simulation. Specially in VR, nearly everyone i offered a test session craseh the car in the first tuns
To be fair, he's been racing on a controller for many years prior to trying my rig 😉 so he knows his way around the cars and circuits, especially in RaceRoom. Still, I was still amazed at how quickly he picked it up though and, even though he was only visiting me in Australia for three weeks and we only had a handful of practice sessions, he was good enough to jump into an actual competitive league race and hold his own 😁
It's my Dad's go-to sim for controller racing and, to be fair, it actually handles really well on a controller 👍 so it seemed like the natural choice of sim when getting him up to speed on the rig. Personally though I would say it's up there for me in general even if it is missing a few features which most others have now like day/night and weather. There's a great selection of cars and tracks, not to mention a completely revamped ffb model from last year which feels superb 👍
Awesome to watch you both, Dan and JD! I also noticed a potential third generation Finney racer sneaked her way into the video as well, I am hoping for a 3 stint race in a couple of years. : )
Ha yeah, little mini-Finney was keen to see what the boys were up to! No doubt she'll be on the rig as soon as her legs are long enough 😉 maybe we could do some family enduros together.
He's a natural, right? It does take a little bit of getting used to when you're in front of just a screen and camera, but once chat kicked in and he could see the usual faces in chat on the stream, all of that apprehension disappeared. It was such an amazing experience and it was an absolute pleasure to not only be able to do this together, but make this video too.
I don't think either of us are ever going to forget this for some reason 😉 thanks for making the race possible as well Steve and your very wholesome welcome to my Dad when he was gridding up... Although sorry for doing you dirty by including a clip of your spin in the race 😅
Can't believe I have just seen this. What a beautiful and fun video. I can relate. My dad unknowingly sparked my passion for simracing when I was young when he bought a Microsoft Sidewinder wheel (didn't even have FFB!) To play TOCA 2 and GPL. Sadly he didn't continue with the hobby but thanks to him I can experience my dream of being a racing driver from the comfort of my bedroom. I hope one day to reintroduce him to Simracing through VR, as he has struggled a lot the few times he tried driving sims in my 24 inch monitor.
Thank you for the very kind words 😁 and I'm sure our story of being introduced to sim racing by our fathers is something that many people can relate to. It's a great hobby to have (although it can sometimes be quite expensive...) and is one of the rare aspects of sims that you can really get a feel for what it would be like, using the actual hardware that real racing drivers would be using with fully simulated data from car manufacturers and also laser scanned circuits. It's quite incredible when you think about everything involved really. Having become a father myself this past year it really makes me appreciate what my Dad did for me when I was growing up. My only hope is that the simracing obsession gets passed on to her too and maybe in a few years we can have a three stint race with all three generations 🤩
You're welcome mate 😉 was an absolute pleasure to put this video together, although trying to edit this one took way longer than usual since I was just sat there watching the footage and smiling for most of the time.
I gotta say, I absolutely love this video. As someone who got into racing because of his dad, I can relate a lot. I lost my father to cancer 13 years ago now. And I spend a lot of time wondering how he would of reacted to trying out my sim rig. I imagine I would have a hard time getting him to let me back on. Great video, love it Dan.
Thank you for the kind words mate, it really means a lot! Being able to share this kind of experience with my Dad was something incredible that I'll never forget and I often realise that having the opportunity to not only make a video like this, but also race against/with him most weeks from opposite sides of the world, is not an opportunity that everyone gets to have sadly. I'm sorry to hear about your father mate, cancer's a b*tch, but I've got no doubt he would have absolutely loved it and fought you hard to get out of the seat 😉 the only reason I got my Dad out of mine was with the offer of a cold beer and a kebab ha! All the best mate, here's to our responsibility to pass the sim racing passion onto the next generation 🍻
@@DDFRacer absolutely. I appreciate your time, and your content. I also appreciate the kind words as well. I have a 7 year old son who will hopefully inherit the sim racing bug, and, who knows, maybe turn it into a real life gig. Cheers! Maybe I'll run into you in an iRacing, ACC, or Raceroom lobby one of these days. Happy racing
Had a similar experience with my stepdad. He has never been a gamer in his life. And the first times he was struggling, and had trouble with concentration. While he still needs AT gearbox, racing lines are getting better and he had to pull into the pits for the first time because he had used up a full tank of gas. He had driven for about an hour straight and was ready for more. Great to see you having so much fun at it together. 🤗
There's nothing quite like getting engrossed in a session and realising you're about to run out of fuel 😆 really goes to show he was totally absorbed in the moment and just loving it. Being able to do sim racing is a lot of fun, but introducing someone else to it and seeing the smile on their face is another level of satisfaction. Probably a good thing my Dad's on the other side of the world otherwise I don't think I'd ever be able to get him off my rig to do any videos or streams ha!
What a nice video! Did you get him to try out VR by any chance? My parents were absolutely stunnd by that.... And it's true what you said, the excited feeling of showing your dad something that you are passionate about never goes away. Had the same when I showed him my new guitar and amp sim software that's gotten crazy good sounding!
I sure did get him in VR 😉 I've got the footage here recorded and ready to go, just need to find some time to put the edit together. Might not be this week as I've got the big Thermalito community event happening but hopefully not too long after that the video should be out 👍
Hey there JD, Daniel, it's me Ricky Satria. It's been a great pleasure for me to be part of that race day! Though I'm still embarassed of that whoopsie on 31:59... You even highlighted it XD All good ofc, you made good use of my moments for good content and I can take a few lessons from you, you're damn lucky to have a dad like JD so make the most of it! ^^
Hey Ricky 👋 yeah you gave us a bit of a spook heading into turn one there but it's all good! You managed to recover and re-take that spot round the outside of my Dad later in the race 😉 thoroughly enjoyable racing. I'll cherish these memories forever, this was such a special experience 🧡
Thank you David, it's definitely my Dad who started this passion for me many years ago! One of the main reasons for starting this RUclips channel in the first place was so I could share footage of my AI races in Project Cars with him when I first moved to Australia...and then some other random people (somehow) found the videos and started watching too 😉 so I guess he can take a bit of credit for everything here!
Thank you Bogy 😁 really means a lot mate, for both of us! He honestly did a super job and I'd love to see what he could do if he had full time access to a rig. Unfortunately there's just no room for one back in UK, not even a desk mounted wheel. Trust me, I've offered several times and even tried to sneak my old G29 into their luggage for the return flight!
Oh man, this was something else 😁 you know how long I'd been looking forward to this so to actually be there in the moment was so surreal. I'm not sure whether I enjoyed driving or spectating more!
my first racing game was also GC Formula 1Grand Prix and would play it with a joystick, only to get schooled by my Dad on his first attempt - showed him the sim rig at home some weeks ago and he couldn't believe it. Nice video!
We used a joystick back in the day too! My Dad was big into his flight sims so that doubled up as a combined pedal/steering input and, looking back now, seems like an odd way of doing it although, actually...probably quite a good idea for the whole traction circle theory 🤔
Cheers Norbs, glad you enjoyed it mate! I'd love to see him with some extended seat time in the rig but I guess knowing the ins and outs of sim racing having used a controller for years probably gave him a good headstart 😉 I'm in the middle of editing the footage of him trying VR for the first time which should be out next week hopefully 🤞
I'd been looking forward to this moment for *years* and it honestly lived up to and surpassed any of my expectations! Most definitely 😉 just need to find some time to put the edit together, although this one shouldn't take as long since it was only the one session. Only two hours of footage to chop down instead of over six 😅
