Once upon a time I invited Dr. Beer to grab a cold one, and he came by with two mostly identical metal shears in pretty bad condition. He asked me to do a competition and who am I to say 'no'?
So I took this metal shear apart, cleaned off the dirt from the past 300 years and gave it a good clean. Some of the old grease just came off by scraping. After that i put every part in my sandblasting cabinet and did a lot of metal works afterwards: filing, shaping, sanding, and so on. When the metal work was done, I painted the parts in "RAL 5007 Brilliantblau". The three base parts werent shown in the video, I didnt want the video to be too long.
The blades were reshaped with a belt grinder, i didnt focus on a perfect look, but on a good cutting edge. While sanding, I cooled down the blades in oil to keep the hardness.
I replaced every screw with a new one, every new screw was cut in length to fit perfectly. The big screw was deepcleaned with sandblasting and wire brushing.
The final test shows, that this shear works perfectly again.
I hope you have fun with the video! If you have any questions on the used tools, materials or the processes, write it in the comment section - i´ll try to answer as soon as possible!

I love it. Such a nice label you added. It was great fun to do this. Thank you my friend and see you only in a few weeks
It was a great idea, and thats what you known for...iam taking my hats off, youre my winner :-D
You guys are my favorite kind of friends ❤ even in competition you still are so supportive for each other ❤
Mister P! You let yourself down and you let me down. You need to go away and have a long hard think! I mean, leaving the horrible letters on the cheap new bolts! Shame! However Dr. B, whilst it blew Mr P. out of the water, that pinstriping was shockingly shoddy. Conclusion: Room for improvement but Dr B slam dunks it. Rematch. Best of three! 🧡

@@restorerestoration4705 100 of what? 🧡
Great job. After watching both videos, I can confidently say that the clear winner is, us, the audience. I hope to see a sequel battle at some point in the future.
Dude seriously it was a battle, grow a pair and pick a winner. They are grown men; I'm sure you won't hurt their feelings by picking one over the other.
@@theodorerobert6579 You must be American. It's OK, friend.
@@petewest3122 What the hell does my nationality have to do with the price of tea in China? 🤦
@@theodorerobert6579 Like I said, it's OK.
@bothofyou - Iam pretty sure everyone won. You as the audience, Dr Beer and me won a lot of experience. Why? Because a lot of people did a clear, constructive voting and picked a winner, and some people just enjoyed without choosing.
Stay respectful to each other, thats the main point.
Thank you this challenge was very entertaining. I am glad you have such a good friend!
Plugging the holes with foam earplugs is brilliant! Who needs tape??? 😂
I like the healthy competition! We tend to care about what we do, when we compete, and make improvements, that we might otherwise overlook.
Blue is for beautiful. Excellent restoration.
Thanks! 🙂
Greetings from Petersburg!
And there was a battle! And the compressors of the sandblasting chambers howled, and the oil flowed, and the chips fell. And it stank of paint.
At first I wanted to vote for Mr. Patina (I watch him longer) BUT ... I decided to evaluate honestly, I watched both videos and ... Guys, 1: 1, a draw. It's an honest assessment, really. 🤼♂ FIGHT !!!
Thank you Aleksander. What more could I hope for. I think we both love a draw
xaxa, priviet aleks! This was a draw, in a few weeks we do the beer competition. Iam pretty sure he´ll win this! :-D
@@misterpatina Nein, nein, Männer. Bier ist nicht Option. Es war nur ein Aufwärmen.
You both are winners.
Thanks :-)
I really appreciate how you and Dr. Beer use filing, filler, and countersinks to make items better than they were when they were first made. And as a person with a name that starts with K, thank you for all the effort you put into keeping that K!
Both restorations were well done. You both put your own finer details on the pieces. The viewers won for sure.
I can hardly believe I'm watching both these videos twice! Fabulous work!
Haha, thanks Dave!
Mechanisch gesehen der klare Sieger. Richtig gefeilt, überall Senkungen angebracht und mit Distanzscheiben optimal die Funktion eingestellt.
Optischer Sieger NTR. Schöneres Finish, galvanisierte Schrauben, Pulverbeschichtung, Holzarbeiten etc.
Genau so sehe ich es auch! :-)
I love your work. It’s a close call but I love the word work from Dr. Beer.
I say it’s a tie.
Thanks :-)
I liked this. Future restorations need to be on identical pieces so we can provide fair critiques.
So close. But, I liked the wood work Dr. Beer did.
Super gemacht, das Label am ende setzt dem ganzen die Krone auf. Tolle Leistung
Danke Tony, bis später! :-)
You are not mister, you are MASTER of restorations, superb workmanship
Haha, thanks a lot! :-)
Take a page from the car guys. Sand AND polish undercoat, then polish the coat, then put the clear coat and polish that too!! You'll be able to bounce your Lazer Cutter off of it then. Great work, I loved it.
You kinda went all in on this challenge video which was very nice and satisfying to watch. Hope to see more works like this in the future videos.
Perfect way to start the weekend: a new video from Mr. Patina! 😂
Haha, first one!
I’m definitely team Patina, but your competition got my vote. He had the more complex shear in my opinion, and the original label was a nice touch. Great results on both and loved the competition!
Thanks JG!
Nothing quite as soothing as a sharp file
I am late to the contest but watched them both a few times thru and have to disagree with the majority and give you the nod...mainly on the overall finished product. I liked the finish of yours better...simple and elegant to me and very clean looking. What really made the difference to me though when you compare the finished products, was the yellow line he painted on and the wooden base. Neither of those worked for me. The base was a work of art to be sure, but did not belong on a metal shearing tool IMO and the yellow line not being straight and clean really thru things off. Anyway, well done sir. You are both amazing craftsmen and I enjoy your channels immensely.
Mr. P, your finished product was very pretty and you obviously have great talent. But since you asking I have to give my vote to Mr. B. He pushed all of my buttons....powder coating, zinc plating, cold bluing, woodworking and pin-striping with logo restoration. I love your show, watch it daily! This contest was fun, thanks!😮

Just wanted to send a little love for your efforts for us! Thank you!
Hey, man! Thank you SO much! I really appreciate 🙂❤️
What a fantastic idea!! A Restoration Competition!! You guys are both creating great content.
Thanks man, iam glad you enjoyed!
Wow! I had to watch both videos twice and I still couldn't pick a winner. I think that your cinematography and editing are both equal. Dr. Beer had the more elaborate restoration, with multiple finish techniques (hammered powder coat, cold bluing and zinc plating). But you did more surface preparation, and since the blades on your shear were in much worse shape to start with, I was impressed that you could compensate with shims. The final touch, which I really liked, was that the first job your shear did was to cut the metal for its own nameplate. 😊 Hooray for both of you!
LOOKIN' GREAT, GOOD WORK
thanks Bob!
@@misterpatina YOU ARE BOTH WINNERS...
Awesome, mbe it's a keenkutter, (they made everything!) (Including ice skates)
Bravo Mr. Patina!!!
“spritz spackle” so concise!! i love it
Very nice job. A couple of things I would have loved to see: 1. Blackened bolts (hot method/oil quenched); 2. Shoulder bolts at all rotating assemblies (rather than threads eating into the various plates); 3. (Most work and really a nice to have more than a must) brass bushings for all the holes on movable parts. Great work though!
Hey Wendelin, nice ideas! Ill keep them in mind and try to do stuff like that with the next projects :-)
I can see where some of the bolts had additional length added to the shoulders upon replacement but you make a very good point. I would have to agree.
Very nice Restore let a lone saving it from the scrap yard that would never been seen again or used again 👍🏆
Perfect finish, I love the plate you made! ✌🏻
Nicely done! I think his powder coated finish will be more durable, and I liked that he restored the hardware. Your finish is very smooth though, and I much prefer watching restoration videos without sped up footage or silly sound effects.
Now face off against My Mechanics.
A very Beautyfull Work Love it da ich beide mag gibt es für mich kein gewinner einfach nur mega top Arbeit ❤️👍❤️
Dank dir vielmals Pascal! :-)
It's a tough one. Dr Beer had a better outcome to me, but I think he gave himself the better condition of the two. Yours is more utilitarian while his is more decorative, so that's a point for you. But I think where he edges you out is the wooden handle and base.
Maybe you should have reviewed a beer. 😂
Hey man, iam glad you recognized! His shear wasnt worn! :-D
But hey, hats off, he did a fenomenal job!
In my oppinion you won! Great work from both of you though 👏❤️ Greetings from Stockholm Sweden
Thanks! Greetings from Germany!
Looks new again and you did an amazing job restoring it!! Now time to watch the other video
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
What a sweet job!👍👏👍👏👍👏👍👏👍👏
Thanks Patron!
Good work. I enjoyed watching both restorations.
Iam glad you enjoyed :-)
I can't split you boys. I said it before the challenge videos were released. But I've at last had the chance to watch both and I've cast my votes. May the best man win ⚔🛠
Haha, thanks my friend! But I guess the Dr. did better, the result speaks for itself. On the other hand, my shear was in a lot worse condition, so i focused on the function :-)
I cannot choose a clear winner, so in my opinion, this contest is a draw. You did a wonderful job and I hope there will be more competitions in the future! ❤
Thanks a lot :-)
Perfection!
Also, loved your custom plaque at the end.
Perfect, Mr P nice one !!!.😀😀
Thanks! :-)

Haha!
I love when every cast lines are removed! Awesome video!
The real winner is the viewer.
Thanks! :-)
you both did superb work. Very close however, Dr. Beer had a slight advantage with the beautiful woodwork that he did. Not Terrible Restoration wins Buy a small margin… I would like to see more of these challenges… you two are the best. 👍⚒️🔨🔩🔧🪛🛠️
I took my hats off for him and agree :-)
Thanks for watching, we´re glad you had fun :-)
Both are great, some imperfections in final result of Dr Beer (rust in some holes for example) make the difference, I prefer the powder painting but not the handle he makes.
Hard to choose a winner but in final I do prefer your restoration.
nice video , great job !
Thanks Rico! :-)
Hard choice between the two, they’re equally as beautiful

Одно удовольствие на это смотреть☺️
1) I love that you both did this. It's neat. 2) fabulous job Mr. P. 3) your filming and editing are superb. This was a nice restoration buoyed by the fact you two were 'competing'. Thanks for sharing.
Hmmm... Schwierig...
Wegen dem Griff und Platte sag ich Dr. Beer.
Sonst einstand. Müsst ihr wiederholen 😊

I remove the toughest dirt easily with a wire brush and only then I take it for sandblasting and if I don't take it of with a brash sandblasting takes to long!!! Greetings from Serbia 🇷🇸🇷🇸
Another nice job Kai.
Do we really need to see what the bearded wonder did? 😂
Haha, thanks Eddie! YES, he really took it to another level :-D
Beautiful restoration job on the metal cutting shears. It looks much better and works like a charm too. Excellent work.
Великолепно!😊👍🫶
Très belle restauration, plus proche de la réalité de l'outil que celle de "not terrible restorations". Votre travail respecte mieux l'esprit
Wundervolle Arbeit. Die Qualität der Restauration UND der Videoqualität ist dermaßen überragend. Ganz starker Job Junge! 😄

I’m amazed. Not only the restoration, but the cinematography is great as well.

This is a really hard choice. Both of you are true masters with a lot of love for detail and a great craftsmanship. Thank you for your videos.
Youre definitely the winner of Usernames...:-D

Vielen Dank und Grüße aus Darmstadt 😄
I came to here via the link from Dr Beer's site. Great job by both of you! Now subscribed to you as well.
Thanks and welcome to the channel :-)
This is a great concept because no matter which way you both go, you'll both hopefully learn from each other. As for us, we're lucky to have a double video! Will watch his right after, I hope you send him some local beer to try out 👍🍺
Yes, and I guess the clear winner is the audience ;-)
Oh, we´re so close to each other, he´ll come over to a good beer comparison :-D
Class job buddyyy amazing👌👌maybe use a impact driver for the rusted bolts and nuts it might be easier
That blue finish is outstanding.
Ahhhh...die guten Bilsom Stöpsel...ich hoffe das waren gebrauchte😂
Wie immer sehr geile Arbeit. Da macht zuschauen Spass😉👍
Freut mich dass es dir gefallen hat :-)

Excellent!!! A thorough and meticulous restoration 👏👏👏, with an awesome result. And also, a little bit of learning along the way. Always appreciated 👉👉👉. Thanks Mr. Patina 🙏. Don't leave it too long for another one 😉. 😎
Hey John, thank you so much! Iam glad you could learn smth!
I have no words, really what is beauty is beauty, there are no two opinions, this man is abs. a perfect, meticulous and very precise craftsman, here you have to express admiration or be silent, great respect from me and old BG. p.s. I have a similar guillotine and I will make it, like him!
SUPER Perfect 👏👏👏👏
Thanks! :-)
Nobody can beat you in RESTORATION.
you are a genius.
Thanks :-)
What about "My Mechanics"?
Good job both of you. I am abstaining from voting because you both did an excellent job.
I saw this video first and thought wow but sadly your opponent somehow out did you. Thank thank thank you both
Great restoration. Is difficult to say who won. Dr. Beer started from better quality item and seems to have better equiped workshop.
Beautiful restoration 🎉🎉
Thanks!
Wow! Both you you did an amazing job. I really like the color you chose. Both were very crusty, which made both a very enjoyable watch. But, it appears your cutter was more worn than Dr. Beer’s cutter , evident with the play/ slob between the blades, the blades were heavily scratched and the screws were pretty worn. I’m curious if Dr. Beer’s 5 degree bevel blades are better? It appeared you had 90 degree blades. Anyways, both were very impressive to watch!
Thanks for your constructive feedback! Oh no, I did the 5° degree as well, I just didnt show :-)
@@misterpatina I was not trying to criticize. It was only meant to ask. I am in no position to criticize. Great video though, sir.
Ooof, so smooof!
I’m happy for you, bro. You are a talent!
Que hermoso quedó
Very very good and nice
It’s quite interesting to see the different ways you’ve both approached the restoration. I like the colour you chose. Beautiful work as always.
While the two shears were similar they were not identical. I feel you got the easier shear to do. You both did good jobs on the restoration but Dr. Beer made two mountings (one wood, one for fastening to a work table) and a wooden handle. So sorry, Mr. Patina, but I'm voting for Dr. Beer.
Thanks! Thats what a competition is :-)
On the other hand both mountings were gimmicks that actually can't be part of the challenge. And also these screws were totally gone, so no way to restore them - what makes it more different for Mister Patina to score points here. All in all to me this was the more difficult shear to show what he's actually able to do. As a result, this shear is a perfect workpiece, while Dr. Beer's shear is more of a showpiece for the gallery.
Thank you, finally someone who understands that this was a battle and a winner should be chosen!
I’ve been waiting for this since the announcement. I love your videos and have watched almost every single one.
You guys are fun to watch. 👌🤓
Thanks!
You guys are both awsome!
Thanks :-)
Great work!
So nice.

Both were metal shearers, but two very different restorations! So I have to go with the one that was a more beautiful blue! You get my vote Mr Patina! 💙😉
Thanks Linda..! :-)
I thought about you while doing the current project - youll see the bluest blue ever...:-D
Mr Patina has a very particular set of skills, he will look for you.......he will find you.......and he WILL restore you.....
