Thank you! Your explanation of the shifter setup on the whiteboard was something I needed since other videos do not explain why they are doing what they are doing.

I just obliterated the right front fender trying to turn my '04 XT mechanic's special around in my back yard. Cut the wheel hard right, put it in reverse, gave it a little throttle. I was attempting to snake it around a tree and was looking back so as not to bump into my CRX. Lo and behold, it did not go backwards. I was in 4th gear, so it shmooshed the fender into the tree instead of avoiding it. There was a hail storm coming in hot, so I was turning it around to nose the XT into my garage to protect it from hail damage. Later I realized my shifter had gone all "Game of Thrones" on me (floppy wieners). The real kicker is the storm just decided to go around my part of town and the hail never showed up. So now I have to add a new fender, and some shifter bushings to the list of items I need to replace in order to button it up and get it road ready. I will not be deterred, though. This is my first Scoob and I am head over heels for this car. Literally been patient for almost 10 years to find the right configuration at the right price. Thanks for your videos. You've already helped me so much and here we are again!

what a job MOST def not a sti. Down pipe and drive shaft dropped to get to the bolts care full they dont send the wrong part if you have a 6 speed the angle of the connector pin to the shifter shaft is different

Hey Luke. I’m wrapping up my auto to manual swap and am wondering what size screws fastener that metal plate cover to the car? Are their nutplates on the backside of the car? When I removed my auto shifter I had 6 nutplates fall off the backside

Do you ever experience after replacing the shifter assembly, the shifter is no longer centered in the car? Meaning, when I shift into 1st gear, it visually looks like its going into 3rd gear. I can't seem to find the reason why the shifter is off-centered now. Any thoughts?

Aftermarket non genuine shift linkages cause the shifter to be out of center. You must get genuine subaru linkage. Watch out some look genuine but are not

Hmm. No haven’t had this happen for OEM or aftermarket. But have only used good quality aftermarket stuff like Kartboy. There’s a lot of cheaper Chinese stuff out there that’s prob pretty bad. Maybe try to loosen things and realign, if there’s some play in there.

Same thing with me, shifter is offset to the right. I just replaced all bushing and the shifter joint on my fxt 5mt. Is the shifter joint with the roll pin symmetrical? I may have installed backwards. Please help me lol

It is - didn’t want people to miss this info if they weren’t interested in the DM-1 shifter… I think it’s good general knowledge. Thanks for the support too - really appreciate it!!!

Just looked it up - it’s called the “Hammerhead Auto-Hammer”, made by Craftsman. Here’s the official corporate page link:

I have a 1998 subaru legacy 5mt and iv been trying for over a decade to remove that outer roll pin its completely seized into the arm I may buy this tool and try to get it out. The linkage is totally gone no bushings and rattles on the highway.

@@SubaruONLY what can cause a shifter to feel loose after installing whiteline shifter bushings? I got them installed and it felt nice, tight and firm shift feel. Sadly it went from that to sloppy and now it feels metallic and grinding like depending on how I shift. I try to shift with care and understand that forcefulness and aggressive movements aren’t ideal for any car especially Subaru manual transmissions with 5 speeds 😅 ( still got to love a classic 5 speed) what can I do to fix it and make it good as new? I got a new roll pin and I don’t know if it’ll make any difference

Hmmm. Sorry to hear man! Sounds like some mechanical part came loose or something. I’d just pull the whole shifter assembly (as I show in my recent videos), I bet you’ll find something came loose or broke and it’ll be clear at that time. Good luck!!! 👍
