    Thank you Bernie for acknowledging both aspects of the situation: 1) Ukraine's sovereignty must be respected. 2) Putin is a corrupt power-hungry dictator, but Russia does have legitimate cause for concern if Ukraine joins NATO (very apt comparison to the Cuban missile crisis). We must be hopeful that there is a diplomatic solution to this, but politicians and media who recklessly beat the war drum and say there is 0% truth to the Russian narrative are exacerbating the tensions.

    • @imme12
      @imme12 2 года назад +38

      For people to understand why all this is happening they need to know few facts, purposely omitted by the West, US and the mass media:
      1) Ukraine was created as a country during the establishment of USSR and it was Lenin’s idea in the 20s of the last century, to add Donbass (historically very Russian territory) to the Soviet Republic of Ukraine;
      2) Crimea was “gifted” to the Soviet Republic of Ukraine in 1954 by the communist leader Hrustchov and cut from the Soviet Republic of Russia. Back then this really didn’t matter so much as it was all one big country - USSR;
      3) After the collapse of USSR many things were not thought trough by the new leaders and this included the status of Crimea which has always been a special status within Ukraine;
      4) The coup in Kiev in 2014 was supported by US. The US Administration representatives, the US Embassy actively participated in the protests, giving speeches to the protesters and cookies :-);
      5) The president than Yanukovich signed agreement with the opposition, predominantly represented by the ultra right neo Nazis. US was there as monitor :) Yanukovich agreed to step down and have new elections. The bloody protests started a day after this.
      6) Yanukovich is portrayed in the West as pro-Russian or Russian installed puppet. He was actually very pro-EU and the West but wanted to keep good relations with Russia too. The whole issue started when he put on hold negotiations with IMF and European countries. IMF was insisting on terms and conditions that will economically hurt the ordinary people in Ukraine and make lots of prices skyrocketing. IMF was insisting Ukraine raises the price of the gas received from Russia to add to other thing - the list is not short;
      6) The self proclaimed new government who staged the armed coup started tough measures against all Russian speaking citizens in Ukraine and staged massive anti-Russian policy;
      7) In Odessa 40 Russian speaking Ukrainians were burnt by the ultra right fans by locking them in the Trade Building and setting fire with Molotov cocktails and shooting at them when they were trying to escape from the building. There is no real justice till date and the killers are enjoying their freedom;
      8) People of Crimea knew they are next and held a referendum to get out of Ukraine;
      9) Many people in Donbas were protesting peacefully against the self-proclaimed government of the ultra right neo Nazis and these people wanted new elections, saying they didn’t vote for this government. That was all they were asking for - new elections.
      10)The new Kiev regime sent the military to Donbas and that’s how the situation escalated. Lugansk and Donetsk announced their independence as they don’t want to be part of a country that sends its military against its own people.
      10)Till date the Ukrainian army has not really complied with the cease fire agreed with the Minsk agreement and for 7-8 years Kiev continued to shell Donbas region;
      11)The Kiev regime put an economic blockade on Donbas in terms of supplies, pensions and salaries not paid to people, constant stoping of water and electricity as punishment… It was only Russia that sent humanitarian aid to Donbas. Nobody else cared about the millions of people there;
      12)All the West has been telling people is that Russia must comply with the Minsk agreement BUT they didn’t really explain what the agreement is about. Russia’s part is the very last step once all other steps are achieved and complied with by Kiev. Only than Russia is required to close the boarder and give the Ukrainian government full control of that border.
      13)Kiev did nothing. They did not engage in negotiations with Donbas as agreed in Minsk. Zelensky got elected promising peace in Donbas and deescalation of the conflict and did exactly the opposite. Nobody in the West has shown the people of Donbas. We see only the Ukrainians on the other side of the line and the so called separatists are shown as the aggressors!
      14)Kiev regime did nothing to deescalate the situation. Few days ago they started shelling Donbas again and basically created what is happening now so they can blame Russia for intervening and breaching Ukraine’s sovereignty;
      15) Last but not least, majority of the people in the West watch and listen to information pushed by the MSM which is part of the Trusted News Initiative of BBC to fight “propaganda”, meaning they show their “news” freely and block all alternative opinions through the censorship they impose. They were so afraid of the Russian “propaganda” being more convincing in competition to their lies and pseudo facts that they had to come up with the TNI pact. The people in the West and US were hugely misled and never given unbiased view and the full facts.
      Yes, Russia as a big power has its regional geopolitical interests. Same as US, UK and the big countries in EU. However, let’s just recall who staged all major wars in the last decades: Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria… US and NATO!!! The aggressors who call Russia the aggressor!
      The West knew what Russia will do if Kiev’s regime don’t comply with the Minsk agreement and they purposely supported Zelensky in pushing the agenda of conflict escalation, though in interviews they all talked empty talks about deescalation.

Hitler/Putin are already in power and are initiating wars. In 1938 the West thought that by giving Hitler parts of Czechoslovakia (which he, like Putin, claimed basically belonged to Germany) it can prevent war. Instead, it only instilled in Hitler the notion that he can do whatever he wants to smaller/weaker nations and no one would bother stopping him.

    As a U.S. Army Veteran, I say bravo to Senator Sanders for sounding the alarm regarding how fragile this situation is politically and militarily without abandoning the people of Ukraine, or defending Vladimir Putin's aggression towards Ukraine. Yes, hit Putin and his cronies with the toughest possible sanctions if Putin enters Ukraine, do not punish the Russian, Ukrainian and European populations for a situation not in their control, or start another world war.
