This movie feels like it’s straight out of an Edgar Allen Poe story. Strangely enough, this movie takes inspiration from an unfinished poem written by him under the same name. A popular theme in Poe’s stories is gaslighting, making the reader question which perspective is more reliable. In this scene we ask ourselves, is Wake really trying to set up Howard, or is Howard crazy? Or is it both?

At this point Winslow is completely lost in his mind. I like the idea that the light might’ve been nothing and that everything about the light, the mermaid and Wake was part of his delusion (not that Wake as a person was part of his delusion, but that he had something to do with the light).

I like the three different interpretations that are most popular:
-It was all an abstraction or a dream, either way not reflective of a reality (Like Mulholland Drive). Only some shots or scenes are real (most probably the last one).
-It was all "real", but Winslow is losing his mind and we're seeing it from his POV. The old Lighthouse Keeper is just really fucking weird, but Winslow can't tell the difference between reality and delusion anymore.
-it was ALL real. The Lighthouse is literally cursed. Winslow has just accidentally entered on the realm of a Lovecraftian outer-worldly sort of creature and he happened to be unlucky. Either that or he disrupted some order and is getting punished for it (most likely the killing of the gull).

You ever had a boss that refuses to see that your hard work, the fact that you're honestly trying your best, but the fact you have this one thing that helps pass the monotony of work then you deserved to get dragged.

so masterfully highlighted by the combination of black-n-white colour and the lighting in various scenes, that gave this movie such an
uneasy, suspenseful, almost supernatural theme. On top the dialogue as the icing on the cake produced the movie as the whole great

I feel so bad for Winslow. Especially at the part where he just stands before Wake chewing him out and calling him a dog. Considering Winslow does work hard, is trying to find a living, only to be shunned hard by the boss with such conviction and tone. The shots of Pattinson with tears in his eyes building up each time he showed got to me. It makes me think of people that have gone through that in real life with their bosses, parents, or significant others. What a sharp pain that must be, trying your best and still being put down so ruthlessly. How can that not leave you broken. Hearing it come out the people you want acceptance from. He couldn’t leave the island under the circumstances, it’s all just so unfortunate.

@hegemonious I think the implication is basically we are seeing things from Winslow's perspective so of course he thinks he himself is a hard worker and deserving of praise but the thing this movie does so brilliantly is make you doubt who is right and who is wrong. For example, the scene of Wake chasing Winslow with the axe only for him to spin it on us that it was actually Winslow chasing Wake with the axe. For all we know Winslow could have been a slacker who neglected his duties to beat off to his siren figurine that he had and only deceived himself into think he was a good worker by assuming the personality of the real Winslow and thus making the viewer see this warped version of himself, as is implied in this scene when you get glimpses of the real Winslow and they both have a similar appearance. It plays on the unreliable narrator idea that was used by Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft, some of the films main inspirations. Sorry to hear about what you been through though. You're doing great and even if you can't prove it to others, as long as you can prove it to yourself and become a better person, that's all that matters at the end of the day.

I liked the part when Dafoe called out Winslow on playing a tough guy, pretending there is some mystery to him when in fact there is none.
So many people do this at work, or in life in general - they want to project an image of someone very smart, mysterious or hard to figure out, in control, aware of everything. But ultimately all it takes is life handing us lemonade for one day too long, and we all crack one way or the other.
You can say Wake kinda dragged Winslow down. He got him to drink, he treated him like crap at work and so on and because they were there isolated longer than they were supposed to, it all brought Winslow down eventually, much to Wake's glee and joy. Maybe if Winslow (or Howard) resisted and kept to himself, he would survive it and not lose his sanity.
So the moral is, if you meet someone that's actively trying to bring you down to their level, resist no matter how long it takes and how hard it gets. Otherwise you're going to have your own image of yourself distorted and you will have to live with knowledge you're not the person you thought you were.

This movie depicts two pretentious low lives who are both acting like they have the moral decency over the other. Winslow is a runaway criminal but Wake is just as rotten. Abusing Winslow, making him do all the dirty work then making him drink on duty only to be gaslighted at the end. No wonder his old companion also went mad as he claimed earlier. His treatment surely would drive anyone to the brink of mental breakdown. I remember when Winslow said “You’re not even a human being anymore.” implying he lost his humane side for working in an isolated rock for far too long.

Dafoes acting is amazing in this film proof that he is the best actor of his generation by a long shot.
The part after this where Patterson is burying him and Dafoe keeps talking is brilliant! He's getting mud in his face and mouth but continues speaking like he even spits some mud out and keeps going.
I think Patterson showed Alot of people hes not just a one role actor, this film and that one on Netflix where he has blonde hair and cons and schemes everyone I can't remember the name.

2:15 This is the point of no return.
A disagreement between two men is one thing. But [Dafoe] referenced [Pattinson]'s old life, and having 'weight of evidence' that [Pattinson] is indeed just a squirt of shit.

    • @pinealdreams1064
      @pinealdreams1064 4 года назад +19

@dayum son I actually think it's one of those literal/metaphorical films. He does kill a guy, but the guy represents his shadow-self, or subconscious, trying to guide him towards self-realisation and self-awareness 'I've learned so much from yee', but deems him unworthy yet of seeing the light - 'the truth'. Winslow, when his subconscious tells him the truth about who he is and how in denial he is, instead of accepting it, rejects it, and that's what causes his damnation at the end.
