I'm honest with both my kids. Ones does well. One flounders and says I'm mean and she hates me for not telling her how fabulous she is. I don't say she sucks. I say she needs more practice to get to the level she's aiming for. Nature is a beast to try to out nurture
I’m 26 and successful & my sister is 24 & refuses to work . She had a degree but she wants to make it big online versus going into the real world. She spent money she had to pay off her student loans to get a nose job. I make 130K+ and she makes some money online but refuses to apply to any jobs. She will apply when recruiters reach out and convince her that she wants that job but then I find jobs that are good for her entry level + entry level pay and she says she doesn’t want to commute or get paid a low salary. I get it but I didn’t cross six figures until I was in the work force for over 6 years and got a degree and professional licenses. It’s super frustrating. I’m debt free, paid off car, paid for my own college.
I have often wondered is this is a parental issues?....Spoiling....allowing the adult child live at home, not working, not participating in the household maintenance and chores. When I raised my son's I sold items I pickup up on the sidewalk during city pickup days at the local flea market several times a summer, My son's went with me and sold things. Then I had an annual garage sale and my son's sold their outgrown items and pocketed the money. They participated in the sale, learned customer service, making change stc. Then they graduated to paper routes at age 12. This taught then responsibility, how to work, the value of work and pocket money as well as saving for college. Then they has summer jobs in high school and saved for college. I taught them money management from a very yearly age. I coached them along in a way that was appropriate for their age. When my youngest son was age 21 and wanted his first starter home he has ZERO debts and money in the bank. The mortgage lender look at his stats and said he would have no trouble getting a mortgage. It starts young and this consistency over a lifetime teaches life-skills and success.
Nothing at all wrong with adult children at home. This is traditional in Eastern cultures. The reason is because it is cost effective, and it forces kids to want to get married, start their own family (if they want out of the house). But here in America, there has always been a stigma vs. adults living at home. Why? Because we've been spoiled, where everyone with a modicum of ability, can effectively move out on their own. But reality is now hitting America in the face.
I remember my mom telling me I had a great singing voice. I DO NOT! I always wondered why she said that. I knew I couldn't sing, and I am 99% sure she knew too, lol. I had self-awareness, at least about that. I am not sure where self-awareness comes from, but I think most people honestly do have self-awareness. They just have no shame and don't care about other people. We need some humility back in this world!
The real problem are the soft enabling gen X parents. The parents incapable of saying no or having their kids work before they graduate college. The parents that buy their kids a new phone every year and everyday is a Christmas shopping holiday.
You said it. It is ironic, because Gen X will tell you about their own trials and tribulations that defined them as kids. Then in the next breath, they'll tell you that the current generation is soft... MFr, you raised them!
Gen x here. Neither myself nor all but one of my friends have been easy on the kids. We all raised them to pitch in, have responsibilities, pay your way etc. I have two kids. One is very hard working and responsible and one is a flake. Both are autistic. Nature is stronger than nurture
@@laundrygoddess4 You're super rare. The Gen X parents I know revolve everything around what kids want to do and never say no to them. One of them I know cuts french toast for 18 year old and has never had a job. It's beyond ridiculous.
@@cur244 I'm not super rare. Where I come from, it was the young boomer parents that spoiled and enabled their kids. Us mid to late xers are not into enabling. But the school system is. We want our kids to fail, but the schools don't let them fail because of a few noisy parents in the minority. The majority of us are sick of the system but they don't let us change it.
I've worked with and I've raised Gen Z individuals, as well! They are exactly what you say and some! They are also soft, emotional, lack old-school work ethics and entitled!
I am Gen X and have to say my siblings who had children spoiled the heck out of them. Toy rooms instead of toy boxes. They went to school to argue with teachers if their kids got an F (which in some cases they deserved). They had them in every extra curricular activity, football, baseball, dance, yoga, scouts you name it. Some of them were barely able to tie there shoes by the age of 13 because of the hovering parents. Don't complain when the kids expect everything for nothing.
The thing about the grades is spot-on. As Coleman said, lack of good feedback. Why? Because the previous generation (Gen-X) had elevated self-esteem because that was when we (as a generation) felt more entitled. If you go back to previous older generations before Gen-X, NO ONE expected anything. Everyone put their head down, didn't ever look for attention, etc. Now, imagine these generations, now and in the future. On another note, I've fallen into a cop body cam watching rabbit hole, and I'm amazed at the lack of self-awareness in these law breakers. And I think it is bad... and shameful. But it's only going to get worse.
Our civilisation progresses - it is a fact. If you look at the numbers - We are getting smarter, stronger, faster, more productive. Which means every next generation in average is “better” than previous. So if someone from previous generation thinks different - it is usually either unmanaged expectations or lack of understanding where the progress is moving.
We are also getting fatter, sicker, more isolated, and absolutely mentally unhinged. These are also facts. The greatest generation walked on the moon. Millennials have left two astronauts stuck in space.
This concept is true when you think about it. Compare sports in history to current day to see this play out. (e.g. Jesse Owens wood be a 🐌snail if he ran in these Olympics) In the case of general civilization, are we smarter? I'd guess stats say yes. But if we accept that as truth, the thing that stunts that progress is that it is crippled by other factors (that have also grown in the same way) like health (obesity), mental health (sense of entitlement, bloated self-esteem).
I’m 24 and been working 2 jobs for years even after HS but I was already working at 15. Most of the advice the older generation gives is not good advice for today’s society especially when many older folk still have a lot of debt.

Because many of them spent their extra money on their entertainment lazy privileged children. 😂
