Saudi Arabia's Double-Edged Sword: Wealth, Reform, and Oppression

  • We travel across Saudi Arabia and follow the reforms from within for a year. The country wants to diversify its economy by opening its borders to tourism.
In Jeddah, many young people hope for change, demanding greater equality between men and women, but the conservative opposition is enormous. One wrong word and they can be arrested. How far do they go in the fight for freedom?
Saudi Arabia is well known across the world for its wealth, strict faith and oppression, but while Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has decreed that it wants to reform, the world is startled by the murder of journalist Khashoggi and other human rights violations.
We follow the developments from the inside, through the eyes of the inhabitants themselves. Are they just empty promises or is Saudi Arabia actually able to change?

I lived and worked in Saudi Arabia almost 30 years. I have great respect for the country that allowed me to Provide for my family. I raised my family there also. My wife is a nurse and I am an engineer that works in construction. Saudi Arabia has been good to us but... there is a big but.... if you can live with all the restrictions and doesnt have a choice to go somewhere that has freedom. Then it is ok. But if you value your freedom more than anything else... then Saudi is not the place for you.

Definitely just a figure of speech also you make no sense even if it wasn’t . How would a man walking behind a woman ensure her safety? Had to be one of the dumbest comments in awhile. For starters I’d he is in front of her he will be the first to receive the danger . Wether it be something small like something she may trip and fall on if he is walking ahead of her then he can clear the path for her. If there is something dangerous approaching a wild animal or someone with a gun he needs to b in FRONT of her to protect her . Even with all that said alot of these things get exaggerated for the sake of a video

Clearly she is proud of Saudia Arabia and wants to share her country's rich history and heritage with the vistors - they are all hoping will come. I’m so thankful that I was born in a country (Ireland) that doesn’t oppress women and that men have no problem being equal to us.
That girl Farah is so beautiful, intelligent and full of life but is held back by men who feel threatened by her. Not only that but her life is in danger constantly. Tourists should stop going to this country. I would never go anywhere where men in the guise of protecting women, suffocate them instead. Do not let the comment below fool you, saudi is a great place to visit with a rich culture that westerners must visit if they want to truely understand it.
I will admit, I was scared to death when i landed in dammam on the first day on Ramadan, within 6 hours all of my fears and propaganda based concerns were 100% alleviated.
Ksa has problems, but show me one nation who does not have despicable practices. We only learn to tolerate these practices because it is around us every day.
